RELEASE (EUROPE & UK): JANUARY 2025

RELEASE (INTERNATIONAL): FEBRUARY 2025

It is often said that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. In The Touch, Kinfolk and Norm Architects present an alternative: that good design is not only visually appealing—it engages all of the human senses.

The Touch, the first collaboration between Nathan Williams of Kinfolk and Jonas BjerrePoulsen of Norm Architects, welcomes readers into over 25 inspiring spaces where interior design is not only visually appealing but engages all of the human senses.

Through beautiful homes, hotels, museums, and retail stores—from contemporary designs by Ilse Crawford and Bijoy Jain to classic cases by Arne Jacobsen—readers are invited to explore how experiencing elements such as light, nature, materiality, color, and community can deliberately bring us back to our senses and imbue every day with a richer quality.

In addition to stunning photography and interviews with design industry leaders as John Pawson and David Thulstrup, the book also details philosophical and art history references that reflect the tradition of design and color theory. For a deeper understanding of the concepts explored, The Touch includes an appendix which profiles architects such as Lina Bo Bardi and Richard Neutra. Heritage design pieces that helped influence this movement are also listed in the book.

NATHAN WILLIAMS is the co-founder of Kinfolk magazine—a leading design authority sold in over 100 countries.

JONAS BJERRE-POULSEN is an architect and founding partner at Norm Architects. He has over a decade of experience as an architect, designer, art director, and photographer.

“This book transcends the visual.” ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST

LINA BO BARDI

Guided by the purpose of wellbeing, the essence of Norm Architects’ style is balance: richness focused by restraint, simplicity imbued with warmth, complexity heightened by order. Be it architecture, interiors, or furniture, Norm’s unique brand of soft minimalism speaks to the mind as much as the body, creating and curating spaces for all.

The first self-curated monograph by Norm Architects, Soft Minimal showcases a range of works which facilitated their establishment as key figures within Nordic design. Presenting residential and commercial projects throughout Scandinavia, Italy and Japan, Norm reflects on Nordic traditions, modernist principles, and the importance of natural materials. Exploring a creative process that makes the visual speak to all senses, the book becomes insightful, inspirational, and deeply poetic.

Situated in one of Copenhagen’s oldest streets, NORM ARCHITECTS are deeply embedded in their context and apply their principles in projects worldwide. Their expertise lies in finding that sweet spot between having nothing left to add, or to take away.

“This book looks at a slew of the studio’s projects across the globe and identifies ways in which the built space, if designed well, can be a sanctuary through the senses.” THE TIMES

STILLNESS

An Exploration of Japanese Aesthetics in Architecture and Design

9 783967 041583

After over a decade of travel, study and creative collaboration with Japan, Norm Architects’ shares their uniquely Scandinavian view of Japanese aesthetics.

Stillness invites readers to ponder the aesthetic links between two disparate cultures: one in Scandinavia, the other in Japan. Copenhagen-based Norm Architects shares observations collected from numerous visits to Japan: from ancient temples and gardens to modern cities—all documented through sublime photography.

A series of essays provides enriching insights from experts in architecture, design, and craft, whose comments further illuminate the deeply rooted aesthetic kinship between Scandinavia and Japan, while emphasizing the mutual respect and shared philosophies of design and craft.

Stillness is an ode to Japan, a personal travelogue, and an aesthetic manifesto that allows readers to experience Norm Architects’ decade-long inquiry, as they’ve sought to better understand one of the world’s most revered creative cultures.

NORM ARCHITECTS is a Copenhagen-based practice founded in 2008 working within architecture, interiors, design, and photography. Norm’s sensory yet simple work aims to balance richness with restraint and order with complexity. Building on centuries of cultural exchange between Japan and Scandinavia, Norm Architects’ years of close collaboration with Japanese designers has shaped their design philosophy.

“A journey into Japanese aesthetics through the Scandinavian gaze and vision of Norm Architects.” ELLE DECOR (translated from Italian)

When Virgil Abloh debuted this collaboration with the LVMH-owned luggage brand during his tenure with Louis Vuitton, it signified a new way of working within a luxury house, a freedom of movement between labels for creative heads and other artistic minds that promotes a new kind of brand synergy. An exploration into how basketball redefines creativity,

shaping the art, fashion, and design of contemporary

subcultures.

From its earliest days on urban streets and playgrounds, basketball has transcended sport to become a powerful cultural force. The rhythm of a bouncing ball, the artistry of a perfect shot, and the communal energy of the court have shaped our understanding of creativity in the modern world.

Through an in-depth look at iconic courts, players, and artists, the book reveals how basketball adapts to and reshapes the cultures in which it thrives.

How Takashi Murakami Subverted the Japanese Art World to Become

One of Street Culture’s Most Prolific Fine Artists

The Japanese fine artist is known for his “superflat” theory, combining motifs from Japanese anime and manga with a high-low sensibility that speaks to fans of streetwear and high fashion. It makes him the perfect collaborator for fellow creatives like Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, and Virgil Abloh.

had hints of punk style, like tartan trousers that could easily be seen on a golf course as well as a hardcore show. It spoke to the undefinable nature of Tyler’s fashion sense, and his desire to be as loud as possible in all his creative projects.

Things came full circle when Golf Wang opened its own store on Fairfax Avenue in 2011, and then progressed to the label’s first fashion show, presented in Los Angeles in 2016, which was even covered by Vogue Although the first Golf Wang shop shuttered in 2014 after a landlord dispute, in 2017, Tyler reopened a new “Golf” flagship store, which features an indoor bowl for skaters. At six foot two, Tyler, the Creator cuts a long shadow, and years of skating have also given him a surprisingly muscular physique, one that is often on display in the wild nature of his shows or in the short-lived Loiter Squad television series. Produced by Jeff Tremaine (one of the producers behind MTV’s Jackass), the show premiered in 2011 and carried the run-and-gun aspect of the bloxhead YouTube channel, involving pranks, stunts, and tons of horseplay, but mixed that with asinine vignettes that made it perfect for the late-night programming block on Adult Swim. It brought things full circle by featuring some of the skaters and pranksters from Jackass like Bam Margera and Chris Pontius, but even got appearances from the likes of rapper Juicy J and actor Seth Rogen. One of Tyler’s other style staples, Vans sneakers, led to a string of collaborations with the California shoe company. The first debuted in 2013 under Vans’ Syndicate label, meant for hardcore skaters known for putting their shoes through the wringer. His first shoe was a reinterpretation of the classic Vans Old Skool low-top, done up with a suede upper in black, tan, blue, and red colorways, with “Golf Wang” embroidered on the backs of the shoes. But that partnership came to an end in 2015, when Tyler ended up leaving Vans to work with its biggest rival, Converse.

“Vans just wouldn’t let me grow,” says Tyler in an interview with The FADER. “It was a ceiling and I was like, ‘Fuck this.’ Converse is allowing me to bloom, no pun intended, and it’s great.”

Under Converse, Tyler released several versions of the iconic One Star shoe, beginning with a vivid bright blue suede colorway in 2017, and then following it up with his own Converse line, called GOLF Le FLEUR*. True to Tyler’s style, the shoes contain a side logo reminiscent of a

Kindness and Resilience on the Road through the Balkans and the Middle East

Discovering the hidden treasures of the Balkans in wintertime, plus majestic and dreamlike landscapes in Turkey and Iran

In the frosty December of 2016, Leander, Maria, and their four-year-old son Lennox set out on a journey into the unknown. As night fell in their Austrian hometown, the family’s converted truck, Akela, roared to life, and they began their first of many night shifts on the road. While Lennox was lulled to sleep by the gentle rocking of the truck, Leander and Maria drove until the early hours of the morning, passing through both Austria and Slovenia.

With the first light of morning, they reached the port city of Zadar in Croatia. The Adriatic Coast, bustling with life in the summer months, now presented itself as quiet and deserted in the winter cool. The gentle sound of the waves accompanied the trio on a stroll along the harbor, the dark-blue sea shimmering all around them. At that moment, time seemed to stand still, and they savored the silence. They had previously only known the Dalmatian Coast during those busy summer months, where they had been forced to share its many idyllic spots with other tourists. Now they drove leisurely along the palm-lined coastal road, passing closed hotels and restaurants, rarely encountering other people. They parked easily at picturesque coves, took long walks on the deserted beaches, and let themselves be soothed to sleep at night by the sounds of the sea.

The journey led them swiftly through Montenegro, Albania, and North Macedonia. The Balkan Mountains shape the landscape of these countries impressively. Steep peaks rise above deep valleys, where dark lakes rest and rivers rush. Winter painted the land in a stark but fascinating light. Even the trees defied the cold season, cloaked in their evergreen garments.

The physical traces of the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s were unmistakable. The dissolution of former Yugoslavia has left Montenegro, Albania, and North Macedonia indelibly marked by the consequences of the conflict. Destroyed houses and abandoned military facilities— including guard towers and ruined barracks—stand as reminders of the not-so-distant past. The rural populations of these states often lead simple and austere lives,

while young people migrate to cities in search of work.

Despite these cultural differences, people greeted Leander, Maria, and Lennox with extraordinary kindness and helpfulness.

In North Macedonia, the travelers were unexpectedly met by a blanket of snow, and Akela needed some help to get used to the cold temperatures. From there, they continued to Greece, specifically to the city of Kalabaka, then further to the Peloponnese region. There they found the mystical monasteries of Meteora, perched high on distinctive rock pillars. These centuries-old buildings dominated the landscape with their majestic presence, giving a sense of both architecture and spirituality enduring across time and space.

Near the city of Lamia, the history of Thermopylae, too, started to feel alive. Here one finds not only natural hot springs with healing sulfur baths, but also the site of the legendary battle in 480 BCE between the Spartan leader Leonidas I’s Greek alliance and the vastly larger army of the First Persian Empire, led by Xerxes. Although the Greeks lost this unequal battle (the Spartans famously numbered only 300), Leonidas remains a hero—not just in the popular imagination, but also for Lennox, who showed great interest in Greek history and mythology.

From Athens, the family crossed over to Crete, where they were greeted by radiant sunshine and endless beaches. Along the island’s northern coast, they drove through gentle grasslands, which, as they ventured south, transformed into high mountain peaks and foothills where goatherds grazed their flocks. Back on the Greek mainland, they headed north to Mount Parnassus, the seat of the ancient Muses, the goddesses of the arts and sciences. This mountain range is not only significant in Greek mythology but also home to an excellent ski resort, and, as enthusiastic skiers, the trio naturally came prepared with the necessary gear. Lennox was excited; he had never been on skis before.

Leaving Greece, the journey took them onwards to the Bosphorus Bridge, which, in addition to connecting different districts in Istanbul, also links Continental

Discover the captivating stories and timeless allure of American car culture, honoring the legacy of legendary models and the spirit of the open road.

The automobile has been the backbone of American society over the last 100 years. The likes of Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors defined a new era for the USA, from transcontinental travel and suburban transportation to the great American road trip.

But these cars were never just practical machines; they were part of the great American experiment and their citizens’ pursuit of happiness. They represented a way of life, an expression of personality, and a means of making a living.

Each era of American car culture spawned models that were perfect statements of their time. The Art-Deco-inspired airstream designs of the 1920 s and ’30 s preceded the postwar optimism of road cruisers, while muscle cars of the 1960 s characterized U. S. power on the world stage.

The Americans celebrates the likes of the Mustang, Gran Torino, Corvette, and many other classic models that put American cars firmly into the zeitgeist. From the Model T all the way to the electric age of the Tesla, automobiles have remained icons of American culture.

Surf Shacks Vol. 2 takes us inside the eclectic homes of surfers around

the world.

Surfing is a way of life, one that defines not only where we live, but how we live. Surf Shacks Vol. 2 picks up where the first volume left off: exploring homes of surfers from coast to coast. The homes of surfers are as varied as they come, from from improvised cabins by the beach to penthouse apartments in major cities. In this followup, we meet a fascinating cast of characters from the shores of southern California through to the wild waters of Sri Lanka, Japan and Australia.

MATT TITONE is a graphic designer from Delaware. Following a stint as an art director in New York City, he moved to Los Angeles in 2006 where he co-founded Indoek, an online platform rooted in surf culture and the creative community around it. Indoek’s first Surf Shacks book was published by gestalten in 2017.

Kryddigt

Jambalaya

4–6 portioner

300 g kycklinglårfilé, i bitar

1 gul lök, finhackad

1 grön paprika, fintärnad

2 stjälkselleri, strimlade

½ tsk cayennepeppar

1 tsk paprikapulver

1 burk körsbärstomater (400 g)

2 tsk worcestershiresås

1 tsk nymald svartpeppar

1 tsk torkad timjan

1 tsk torkad oregano

ev 1 dl färsk eller fryst okra

300 g skalade råa vannameiräkor

2 msk hackad persilja eller selleriblad

olivolja salt

6. Salta och bryn kycklingen lite gyllenbrun och lägg åt sidan.

8. Tillsätt tomater, worcestershiresås, peppar, timjan och oregano. Låt småputtra 3 minuter.

9. Lägg i korv, kyckling och okra. Låt småputtra 5 minuter under omrörning.

Låt sjuda under lock cirka 20 minuter.

FISH BAKED IN A SALT AND HERB MANTLE

Salt- or dough-wrapped fish retains its juices and preserves its flavors particularly well. This dish was inspired by ta’ashima, a recipe from Jaffa, thought to work as a charm against unfulfilled desires that are so unbearable, they become physical ailments. This version may not grant all your wishes, but it will certainly make for a satisfying meal. INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

Combine

Preheat

Place a fish in the center of each disc. Cut along the abdomen of the fish with a sharp knife to open it up. Arrange lemon inside the cavity of each fish and season with black pepper. Wrap fish entirely with the dough and pinch the edges to seal.

Place both fish “packages” on a baking pan and bake for 30 minutes. Cut each fish “package” open slightly to reveal the fish inside, making it easier to eat, then serve.

The argument started with an eggplant. Roasted whole over a charcoal grill. Peeled carefully. Drizzled with olive oil. Served with tahini. So simple, and so delicious. But an eggplant is never just an eggplant not in Israel, where even the simplest dish can stir up a heated debate.

Newspaper headlines relayed the play-by-play as leading chefs, both Jews and Arabs, traded barbs over who had invented the recipe. It seemed like everyone loved it but who could rightfully lay claim to it? That simple dish had somehow become symbolic of the battle over new Israeli cuisine.

Just as everyone can lay claim to this region, with its countless cultural shifts, border drawings and redrawings, destruction, rebirth, and growth over the last century, everyone can lay claim to its food. A simple meal can represent a wide spectrum of personal histories, stem from a number of sources, and carry a considerable amount of cultural, historical, and political weight in every bite. So it is with staples like hummus and falafel, and so it was with this simple, baladi ( local variety ) eggplant.

The story of the great eggplant debate illustrates some of what makes the cuisine of this region so special. Just consider: The inspiration for the dish comes from baba ghanoush, a Middle Eastern dish of roasted eggplant flesh mixed with tahini. But where did baba ghanoush come from, and who was responsible for adding it to the modern Israeli menu? Baba ghanoush is an inseparable part of the mezze spread of what was once called Greater Syria ( modern-day Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and the Palestinian Territories. )

It appears frequently on the traditional menu of Palestinian Arabs living in Israel, as well as that of Jews who immigrated to Israel from Arab countries.

Some claim its roots lie in Turkish cuisine. For four centuries, Greater Syria and the Land of Israel within it was part of the Ottoman Empire. Jews from Turkey and the Balkans brought similar dishes with them to Israel; and long before that, Jews expelled from Spain in 1492 found a new home in the Ottoman Empire, perhaps bringing their love for the eggplant along with them. If we are going to bother to go that far back, though, we might as well acknowledge the eggplant’s origins in India. The tahini on top is made from African-grown sesame these days, since Israel is no longer the center of sesame farming and processing it once was. Greater Syria, Turkey, India, Africa can this dish really be labeled “local” anymore?

But the point, of course, was not where the ingredients were sourced, but where the true spirit of the dish lay. By claiming it as their own, Israeli chefs were attempting to add a layer of their own mythology to the dish’s creation story. Meanwhile, Palestinian chefs were simply trying to take back what they saw as rightfully theirs. For each side, claiming the dish would mean grasping something central and critical to the understanding of Israel, somehow crystallizing its own creation myth and clarifying the various transformations it had undergone to arrive at the modern table. All this in a bite of something delicious that hundreds and perhaps thousands of people enjoy in Israel every day. A bite that all those people shared, regardless of their
