Trails and Tales with John Soares

By LEE JUILLERAT for the Herald and News July 14, 2018

Some hiking books sit on the bookshelf looking brand new. But the best ones are battered, with some or several pages that are earmarked or are so often referenced that the book automatically opens to those well-used pages.

Lassen Peak is the prime attraction, he also champions Brokeoff Mountain, Kings Creek Falls and Cinder Cone as excellent hikes that offer views with “1 percent of the hikers on Lassen Peak.”

Two of my John Soares’ hiking guides, “75 Hikes in California’s Lassen Park & Mount Shasta Regions,” and “100 Classic Hikes in Northern California,” show the wear and tear of being often read.

He’s also passionate about Mount Eddy and the Deadfall Lakes, a frequent destination for day hikers through the Happy Trails Meet-Up group. Soares touts the diversity, from old growth red fir forests to open hillsides lush with seasonal varieties of wildflowers, excellent swimming and camping at the lakes and its eye-popping views of Mount Shasta.

Soares’ newest guidebook, “Day Hiking: Mount Shasta, Lassen & Trinity Alps Regions,” figures to be well worn in coming months.

When researching for new or updating books — “100 Classic Hikes in Northern California” is in its fourth edition — Soares spends three or four months retracing and exploring new trails. In “Day Hiking,” for example, “Many of the hikes in the book I’ve done time and time again.”

“Day Hiking” features 125 hikes in Northern and far Northern California, including eight in Lava Beds National Monument along with one at the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuges headquarters and another on Sheepy Ridge.

UP CLOSE RESEARCH

Most are intended as day hikes, but Soares also says many can be done as multi-day backpacks, including places like the Marble Mountains, Trinity Alps and Russian wildernesses, all within an easy drive from the Klamath Basin.

To provide a sense of place, he carries a small digital voice recorder. “Whenever I see something I think will be interest, I turn it on,” explaining he records his thoughts and impressions about things like hiking through stands of beautiful Shasta red fir or orange and areas with rust colored metamorphic rocks. John Soares’ hiking guides have a real feel for the hiking experience in Northern California.

Among the three wildernesses, he confesses to preferring the Russian, partly because of its beauty and variety of offerings, and more so because of its relative isolation. “People tend to go the Trinity Alps or the Marble Mountain and the Russian tends to get overlooked,” he says of the 12,000 acre area, which is known for having 17 species of conifers within a square mile, beautiful lakes and a chunk of the Pacific Crest Trail. Soares regards Lassen Volcanic National Park as another too infrequently visited treasure. While the hike up

“I just really pay attention to my surroundings, what I find most attractive. I try to use the five senses” to, for example, savor the sound of tumbling waterfalls or appreciate the scent of wildflowers. His goal is to find “the things that are most likely to be attractive to other people.” Soares has a master’s degree in political science but says his love for hiking and writing led to an early hiking guide, which led to working with The Mountaineers Books on the first edition of “100 Classic Hikes” and following hiking guides. It’s a part-time pursuit. He’s taught part-time at community colleges and, since the 1990s, has been a freelance writer, not only writing books but also annual reports for various businesses and non-profit organizations.

Up To 100% Financing On This Home Built On Your Land!

While he often hikes with others, “I wind up doing most of it alone because I go for three or five or seven days.” Hiking alone also triggers those five senses — taste, smell, touch, sight and hearing. “I’m much more aware of my surroundings.” THE DETAILS ARE IMPORTANT Soares translates those senses, and necessary facts, in his books, which also include detailed topo maps and data on difficulty, distance, elevation and recommended seasons.

And while he’s excited about his new book, “Day Hiking,” Soares is also anticipating another guidebook due out next spring, “Hiking the Parks: Redwood National and State Parks.” Along with 38 hikes, it will offer information on things like kayaking, mountain biking and places with beautiful views. That’s next year. For now Soares’ goal is promoting “Day Hiking: Mount Shasta, Lassen & Trinity Alps Regions.” For readers, it’s making the book well-used and crinkly.

Planning ahead: Kingsley trains with C-130s for earthquake event By STEPHEN FLOYD H&N Staff Reporter July 15, 2018

Airmen at Kingsley Field recently participated in a firstof-its-kind training event to prepare for the potential aftermath of a large-scale earthquake. Held Thursday through Saturday, the exercise tested how quickly crews could load and unload cargo on C-130 transport aircraft, which could be required following a quake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The zone spans from Northern California to British Columbia and contains tectonic plates under immense tension. If the plates move and cause an earthquake, the impact could be devastating to the region with most of the destruction on the coastline. Because Klamath Falls is further inland and less likely to see significant disruption, Kingsley Field is an ideal staging point for relief supplies. Lt. Col. Christopher Wright, plans officer for the 173rd Fighter Wing of the Oregon Air National Guard, said crews already have a protocol for loading and unloading a C-130. However they needed to see if what works on paper could work in real life.

Airmen at Kingsley Field recently participated in a first-of-its-kind training event to prepare for the potential aftermath of a large-scale earthquake.

Kingsley field’s primary mission is to train F-15 pilots, so it is unusual for airmen to handle numerous deliveries from C-130s. Wright said the exercise helps airmen learn the little details they need to account for that could not be predicted in the planning phase.

Because Klamath Falls is further inland and less likely to see significant disruption, Kingsley Field is an ideal staging point for relief supplies. “Since it’s not a normal mission, we need to know what we’re capable of,” Wright said.

Wright said this week’s training was meant as a test run and they plan to build on their experiences for a statewide exercise they can hold regularly. “We’re going to eventually morph this into a big state exercise,” he said, “This is like the fist proof of concept.”

“We’re always looking to incorporate with our county and our state,” she said. “... we’re going to take care of our Oregonians.”

“You don’t want planes to land and stay on the ground and bog up the runway,” he said. “You want to get them in, have them offload, not shut down, and then get out of the way.”

The exercise could also be incorporated into future Cascadia Rising drills, where city and county governments similarly prepare for a large-scale earthquake. Sr. Master Sgt. Jennifer Shirar, spokesperson for the base, said Kingsley seeks out ways to cooperate with the state and other local governments. 1787674

One thing they needed to learn was how fast their airmen could unload a C-130 and get it back in the air for another transport to land. Wright said this will let them know how many transports they can accommodate in a given timeframe.

time of its launch, Swanson described it as a “Craigslist for food.” The very first KFOM pickup had more than $600 in sales from four different farms and reached nearly $2,000 in sales by January, according to previous reports from the Herald & News. Three farms had 15 different products listed as of Friday. Though different in their own way, Swanson said she and others have studied other community food incentives across the country, which are sometimes referred to as larger “food hubs.” The overall goal of food hubs is to increase market access for local farmers and ranchers in an effort to combat distribution challenges, according to a regional food hub resource guide from the USDA.

Signs for the Klamath Farmers Online Marketplace (KFOM) now sit outside along Foothills Boulevard Friday, July 13. KFOM has switched pickup locations from the Klamath Tool Library to the left end of the Herald & News building.

“It’s getting more and more rare to just have a personal connection,” McPherson said. “We’re going to the supermarket and we’re going to fast food restaurants more and more.” McPherson, whose family has farmed in the Klamath Basin for more than 40 years, is one of several new members of the Klamath Online Farmers Marketplace advisory board, which formed recently to help the newer online shop take off. The marketplace is going through several changes as the summer months continue: pick-up locations have moved from the Klamath Tool Library in Downtown Klamath Falls to 2701 Foothills Boulevard; in addition to a new website being developed. Meanwhile, sales continue even as the Klamath Falls Farmers Market season opens. Right now, KFOM takes in about $215 a week in online sales, according to Katie Swanson, organization lead at Blue Zones Project who continues to spearhead the market effort. CREATING NEW OPTIONS

KFOM first started in November 2017 as a means for residents to find local farmer connections during the winter months. At the

Swanson said that there continues to be a trend of more sales in the winter since more people have a chance to reach the farmers market in the summer months, though more producers now have the ability to post more regularly.

“I was actually pretty impressed with the consistency of products we had over the winter,” Swanson said. “There was always meat, always eggs, honey, garlic, micro greens ... that’s pretty good for the middle of winter in the high desert.” FUTURE POSSIBILITIES

Swanson describes the new website in the works as much more user friendly. The previous design allows for registration and order selections based on each weekly listing. The newer website, which would still be KFOM.org, would have new more user-friendly interfaces along with frequently asked questions and producer profiles. “It’ll be set up more similar to something like Amazon,” Swanson said. “This is a website we want people to go to. Swanson said that the addition of an advisory board and website revamps are just the beginning of plans that KFOM could roll out in the future. Eventually, she hopes that they could work out delivery options, which would allow for new opportunities to sell produce for local restaurants, schools and other institutions. As for McPherson, he said that he joined onto the new advisory group because he wanted to help KFOM succeed. “It’s kind of a growing movement,” McPherson said. “I think it’s something our local agriculture can capitalize on.”
