Chiloquin restoring iconic mural By STEPHEN FLOYD H&N Staff Reporter July 1, 2018

CHILOQUIN — Restoration of a community mural in Chiloquin has been under way in recent weeks, with a grand opening scheduled for July 14. The restoration is being led by Judy Pate, of Two Rivers Art Gallery, who gathered community donations and volunteers for the project. Pate said she wanted to restore the 16-year-old mural before too much time passed and the mural was beyond repair.

project. The community also raised nearly $800 during a Valentines Day dinner fundraiser, while Chiloquin Fire & Rescue helped prepare for restoration by spraying the wall clean. Pate said the project would not have been possible without volunteers, both those who helped paint and those who operated the gallery while restoration was under way.

“Before the mural was un-fixable, the gallery took on the project,” she said.

“If it wasn’t for these volunteers, who helped keeping the gallery open every day, we couldn’t have accomplished this large task,” she said.

The mural was completed in 2002 on the side of the old Community Center on South First Avenue as part of a countywide art initiative. Dubbed “Mazama to the Millennium,” the mural depicts the cultural and historical heritage of Klamath County including the Klamath Tribes, local ranchers and Upper Klamath Lake.

The grand opening will celebrate restoration of the mural as well as installation of signs on Highway 97 directing tourists to amenities available in Chiloquin. City Hall confirmed Friday materials for the signs were being picked up that day and the fixtures should be installed sometime next week.

Local students helped design and paint the mural with guidance from artist Leonard Wilder. Community support included paint and supplies donated by Kircher’s Hardware.

Pate said the sign will promote the Chiloquin Rodeo and Event Park, recreational opportunities and businesses in town. She said many groups contributed to the signs including the Chiloquin City Council, Kircher’s, volunteers and artists from the gallery, Discover Klamath and Discover Southern Oregon.

Kircher’s stepped up again for restoration and sold paint at wholesale prices for the

7 Important Benefits of Sealcoating & Crack Sealing 1. Saves money - sealcoating can double, or even triple, the life of your asphalt. 2. Provides a barrier from ultraviolet rays & helps the pavement hold onto its oils & aggregate. 3. Is waterproof - minimizes crack growth! Seals out moisture that can erode and weaken the base beneath the asphalt. 4. Improves crack resistance - keeps asphalt flexible so it doesn’t crack or break. 5. Handsome, black finish increases property value. 6. Cures quickly for less interruption of traffic or business flow. 7. Faster cleanup - well-maintained pavement is easier to keep clean.

Volunteers give Mills youth center, Exodus House makeover

By SEAN BASSINGER H&N Staff Reporter July 1, 2018

Two different church youth groups visited Klamath Falls last week with a single goal: help give back to other local youth facilities in need. The Integral Youth Services (IYS) center in the Mills neighborhoods and Exodus House near Downtown Klamath Falls each received some sprucing up Thursday. Youth volunteers helped paint and restore certain parts of each building, inside and out. One group came from Lake Oswego United Methodist Church. The volunteers have also stopped in San Francisco and even Missoula, Mont. On Thursday, they could be seen painting the front balcony of Exodus House red, white and blue. They also helped paint a mural in the cafeteria, serve lunches to children and raised $253 with a car wash, according to Robyn Pierson, development director at IYS.

Chad Murchison, one of the adult group leaders, likened their visit to Klamath Falls as being “right in our backyard.” Meanwhile, the Mills youth center had help from volunteers at Valley Evangelical Free Church based out of Hemet, Calif. Justin Brown, youth ministries pastor said they drove for 17 hours for the opportunity to lend a hand. Brown said that they’ve been all over, often staying along the West Coast so they’re able to drive place to place. Other cities they’ve visited include Tuscon, Ariz., Turlock Calif. and many others. Thanks to their help, the Mills IYS center now has a much more colorful interior, which includes tree-shaped wooden sculptures for each pillar. “The inside here was just more to give the kids that fun, exciting feeling of something new,” Brown said.

From right: Karlee Zurcher and Myles Willis, volunteers from Lake Oswego United Methodist Church, help paint the front balcony of Exodus House in Klamath Falls Thursday, June 28.

The group also helped plant new flower beds along the outside and completely paint a fence in the back. Carmen Pena, director of the IYS center, said she appreciated the help from volunteers. IYS relies heavily on volunteer services and donations to keep their centers going. “We’ve always wanted some curb appeal to make the youth center more attractive in the neighborhood,” she said. “For them to do this for us, we really appreciate it.” Larry Zeilstra, interim executive director of IYS dropped by to thank Brown and his crew for their help.

“I’m liking it,” he said. “It looks a lot better. That fence really needed it.” Back at Exodus House, Murchison said he was also well aware of other continued efforts that continue to take place in Mills, saying that he thought it “speaks volumes” on how supportive the community can be. “I easily see Klamath Falls as being a community we’ll return to,” Murchison said. In January, IYS started a campaign to help save the Mills youth center and keep its programs going. As of Thursday, IYS was at $100,000 of their $120,000 goal to keep the centers open longer.

By HOLLY DILLEMUTH H&N Staff Reporter July 1, 2018 Iron Gate Dam, located in Siskiyou County in California, is one of four dams slated for removal from the Klamath River, pending approval by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Klamath Dams: A river — unlike any other — runs through it Ebert, along with Bob Gravely, spokesperson for PacifiCorp, Laura Williams, of the Bureau of Reclamation’s Klamath Basin Area Office, and an H&N staffer recently toured the dams slated for removal along the Klamath River — J.C. Boyle, Copco 1 and 2, and Iron Gate.

Ebert explained that PacifiCorp — current owners of the hydroelectric facilities — has an operations agreement with the Klamath River Renewal Corporation (KRRC) that allows the power company to operate the facilities until KRRC gets a surrender order from FERC, making way for decommissioning. “Decommission to us means actually stopping generation, at which point we salvage what we need and what we can use elsewhere, and we’re done,” Ebert said.

The tour drove to the four scenic dams along rocky, switchback roads. The daylong trip took officials from Klamath to Jackson and into Siskiyou counties, showcasing the widespread impact of the planned removal.

“It’s definitely unusual, with a natural lake like this at the upper end,” Ebert said.

“We call it backwards in that water quality actually improves in the Klamath

Ebert said water flows are flushed with cleaner, cooler water from tributary flows feeding into the river. The closer water gets to the Pacific Ocean, the cleaner it becomes.

PacifiCorp plans to salvage materials including some of the transformers inside powerhouses and useable computer systems. “Most of the big stuff like the turbines — Most of those are designed specifically for a facility and you can’t really pick up a turbine from Boyle and put it in at the Lewis River,” Ebert said. “But you can take the new primary logic controllers, these computers, and control all the operations.” In anticipation of the removal of the dams, Ebert also said PacifiCorp has enhanced its security measures such as an outside audit of the dam’s security and a special training for operators. “It’s all gated, fenced, there’s security cameras at most of these facilities,” Ebert said. Check back with the H&N for much more detailed coverage of the process leading up to the proposed removal of dams along the Klamath River at www.heraldandnews.com.

PacifiCorp’s environmental scientist Demien Ebert stood on the banks of Upper Klamath Lake — the headwaters of the Klamath River — across from the Pelican Marina on a cool, Friday morning in June, admiring the wildlife and talking about the unique qualities of the body of water that flows down to the four dams along the Klamath River.
