Fitness freak or exercise rookie? Apparently there’s room for everyone in the new dance workout craze that’s spinning it’s way into our keep fit routines. A Zumba virgin, I thought I’d give it a go.

Arriving late is definitely not a good idea. The class is in full swing and looks a little like a silent disco put to blaring clashing ethnic music that no one can hear. No one is in time to the rhythm, no one is doing quite what the instructor is doing and despite their best intentions in their exercise gear and trainers no one looks like they’re sweating an awful lot. I slip in at the back and try to keep up with whatever the hell it is that everyone is doing,

The instructor is wearing neon pink trousers and a bum bag. A little off putting, her head set that I assume she is speaking encouragement and instructions into appears to be off and the room is so full of people bouncing about I can only see her every now and again. The music we dance to changes constantly, each ‘routine’ lasting about three minutes and including a variety of moves, hip wiggling, kicking and full on bouncing into the air arms flailing. I don’t think anything I did once matched up to our eccentric instructors eager jiggles. As we got into it, as much as possible, the dancing got more elaborate. A few people seemed to have picked up a beat and the room began to resemble a formal class when apparently our instructor decided to shake things up, leaping into the crowd swinging her arms like a cowboy. Everyone parted, confused and half joining in. From my safe distance fannying about at the back the scene was absolutely hilarious and from this point on the evening took a different spin. If you are after some serious, hard burning teeth gritted exercise than I would suggest something with

boot camp in the name because Zumba is no boot camp. Had I come alone, this would have been an absolute bust and waste of money, but, with friends it was an amazing experience. Seeing every type of woman in every type of exercise gear throwing themselves around to the instructions of a neon clad lunatic is something everyone should do at least once. Perhaps not a weekly routine, I would go to Zumba for a laugh with friends when the mood strikes, I probably burnt more calories laughing than I would have done doing sit ups at home.

My second ever exercise class; I am told Zumba is a brave choice but that as long as I am willing I will have a great time and feel slightly less guilty about that pizza last night.
