Statewide Elementary

Honor Chorus

Craig Hurley is the conductor of the Spivey Hall Young Artists, the preparatory choir of the nationally renowned Spivey Hall Childrens Choir. Under Mr. Hurley’s direction, the Spivey Hall Young Artists were honored to perform at the 2018 GMEA In-Service Conference. Mr. Hurley has also served as a guest clinician for several honor choirs throughout the state including the 2011 GMEA Statewide Elementary Honor Choir, the 2015 Georgia ACDA Children’s Honor Choir and the 2019 Spivey Hall Elementary Honor Choir. Mr. Hurley is also the music specialist at Ford Elementary School in Cobb County, Georgia. Under his direction, the Ford Elementary Chorus has performed with the Atlanta Women’s Chorus, the Kennesaw State University Women’s Choir and the 2015 GMEA In-Service Conference. He has presented interest sessions at the Music Educators Association in-service conferences for Georgia, Florida, and Alabama as well as for other various teacher organizations. Mr. Hurley was honored as Teacher of the Year in 2002 and 2016. Mr. Hurley holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Shorter College and a Master of Early Childhood Education from Berry College and is a music education doctoral student at the University of Georgia (GO DAWGS!). Mr. Hurley lives in Marietta with his wife Katie (also a music teacher) and their three children.

Craig Hurley Melissa Keylock is the Music Director of the Pennsylvania Girlchoir, and serves as the Assistant Director of the Commonwealth Youth Choirs. She is in her eleventh year as Associate Director of the Princeton Girl- choir, conducting the Semi-Tones and Grace Notes choirs. She is the Founder of the Children Making a Difference benefit concert, which in nine years has raised over $30,000 for non-profit organizations. Since 2014, she has served as as Adjunct Professor at Rider University, super- vising graduate music education student teachers. She previously worked as Director of Admissions and Recruitment at the American Boychoir School, where she conducted the community after-school boy- choir program. Prior to that, she worked at the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, and taught public and private school, including K-12 vocal music and AP Music Theory. Melissa has spent her career in volunteer leader- ship in the American Choral Directors Association, where she currently serves as Eastern Division Repertoire and Resources Chair for Youth Choirs. Melissa Keylock holds an undergraduate degree in music education from Wheaton College and a master of music in conducting from Butler Uni- versity, where she directed the collegiate Women’s Glee Club. Melissa completed her Kodály studies at Capital University, Orff Level One at Kansas State University. She is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Emerging Leaders, and Who’s Who in American Women. She enjoys traveling as a guest clinician and presenter at choral conferences and festivals. Engagements include Music in the Parks, the Pied- mont Invitational Choral Festival (NC), BCMEA MS Honor Choir (PA), Let Freedom Sing! National Girlchoir Festival in Philadelphia, Fellow- ship of American Baptist Musicians (WI), Kentucky Music Educator’s Conference Children’s Choir, North Carolina Sings! Women’s Choir, First Coast Honor Choir in Florida, Bucks County Music Educators As- sociation MS , New Jersey Children’s Honor Choir, Appleton (WI) Boy- choir, Pennsylvania Elementary Song Fest, Philadelphia Festival of Young Musicians, New Jersey Intermediate Chorus, seven Circle the State With Song festivals in Indiana, and serving as Artist in Residence at the Peck School. She regularly leads teacher workshops, including the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools, New Jersey Music Ed- ucators Association, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, and New Jersey chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, and the New School for Music Study. She is a Yoga Alliance certified yoga instructor, who infuses yoga breathing, strength, balance, and posture into her choral rehearsals. She teaches at several local yoga studios. Melissa Keylock was honored to conduct the National Girlchoir singing our National Anthem and an a cappella song prior to Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen at the final Hilary Clinton rally in Philadelphia, live in front of 40,000 attendees. Ms. Keylock and co-writer Jill Friedersdorf have published over twenty songs, and are published with Colla Voce, Choris- ter’s Guild, Galaxy, and Hal Leonard Publishing.

Sixth Grade Statewide

Honor Chorus

Mrs. Connelly has lived in Orlando for twenty years and has worked as a teacher in Orange County since moving to Central Florida. She is a graduate of Florida State University with a Bachelor and Masters degree in Music Education and completed her National Board Certification in 2004. She has worked at the middle and high school level as a chorus and piano teacher at Apopka Middle School and at Boone High School. She is an active choral clinician, adjudicator, and has served as guest conductor of Honor Choruses throughout the state of Florida. Memberships include Florida Vocal Association, Music Educators National Conference, Florida Music Educators Association and American Choral Directors Association. She believes strongly in the mission statement of OCPS, that the Arts are a Universal language and that they are a fundamental form of communication for every human being. She is committed to building a strong choral and piano program at Lake Nona that includes all students who have a desire to create and express themselves through music!

Courtney Connelly

Margaret Heron

Margaret Heron is the Choral Director and AP Music Theory Instructor at Mortimer Jordan High School and Choral Director at North Jefferson Middle School in the Jefferson County School System. For her first seven years, Mrs. Heron also taught Jr. and Sr. High Band. She graduated cum laude from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Arts in Instrumental Music Education and is a summa cum laude graduate of University of Alabama at Birmingham with a Master of Arts in Choral Music Education. She received National Board Certification in Choral Music in 2008. Under her direction, her choirs have consistently received Superior ratings at District, State, national and international festivals and have been invited to perform at several AMEA, AVA, and ACDA conferences. Her choirs have performed in New York, Orlando, Williamsburg, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Asheville, and Toronto, Canada. Mrs. Heron served on staff with the Birmingham Children’s Choir as the Concert Choir Director from 2002 – 2005. She has been the Choral Clinician for various honor choirs and camps throughout the state of Alabama. She has served as the High School R&S Chair for the Alabama Choral Directors Association and the State Board of Alabama Vocal Association District III Chair. She was selected two years ago to be an AP Reader of Music Theory, for which she travels to Cincinnati every summer to score AP Tests from around the world. Mrs. Heron has developed and recently presented at several workshops her It’ll Work In Theory, a sequential and comprehensive approach to teaching music theory in the classroom. She is in the process of getting this manual published and available to music educators nationwide.
