Leash Training for Adult Dogs

I'm sure some of you have tried training your own adult dog to follow you on the leash and not them pulling you, I'm guilty of this, to be honest. Whether we were just too busy to train them when they were pups, or we just thought we wouln't need it, and yet here we are.

Training an adult dog certainly isn't like training those cute little pups, they've grown bigger and stronger and they have a mindset that they can “outpull you, that they are the alpha male.

But with a leash, some doggy treats, and a whole lot of patience, you can train your dog slowly to wait for you pace.

This training would require you to train the dog on a long leash, and get shorter as time passes by as it is recommended to walk with a short leash on dogs.

When you go out with your dog, he would most likely pull the first chance he gets, when he does, do either one of the things; stop or take a few steps backwards.

Now comes the waiting game, at first he would likely not heel to your command, so you have to wait until he does stop and turns to you, and when he does, give him a treat and tell him “Good boy/girl!

Dogs are smart, soon, he will be able to associate the pulling with bad behavior, and stopping, going along with you with rewards.

Now you have to slowly shorten the leash and continue training him up to a length where he is just a few feet away from you or just beside you.

This method works because like I said, dogs will associate such behavior with rewards and thus comply, but I must warn you, this will really take a lot of patience from you, especially on the first day. You cannot expect results right away, it may take weeks or months, but afterwards you'll be greatly satisfied with your work not to mention the bond it creates between you and your dog during the training.
