Installation Note: When calculating the floor area (in square metres), it is important to allow for waste, depending on the size and structure of the room and the amount of cutting required.

Preparation There are several important steps that must be taken prior to installation of Fethers timber floors: 1. It is important that the concrete slab or intended flat surface where the timber is to be installed (‘sub-floor’) is level and smooth. The maximum tolerance acceptable is 2.5 mm over 3 m straight edge. 2. In the event that the sub-floor levels are not acceptable, it is recommended that the surface be ground/sanded or filled with a reputable leveling agent as per manufacturer’s instructions, so as to achieve a flat level surface. 3. Programming for the installation of Fethers wood flooring should be when the construction or renovation is at completion, and with no other trades people on site.

Pre-Installation Process 1. Care must be taken to ensure all detailing, undercutting and skirting detail is well thought-out so as to ensure a perfect edge detail. 2. All timber floors need some expansion space and this should be allowed for at planning stage.

Installation – Floating

Installation – Direct Stick

Installation of the timber floor should only begin after preparation and pre-installation are complete.

1.

The floorboards are laid in a randomly staggered configuration, which will result in a superior natural appearance. To achieve the random appearance, it is important that each starter board of each row be not less than 600 mm longer or shorter than the previous starter board. To determine the direction, there are generally two factors to consider:

a.

b. Ensure any natural light source falls along the length of the boards.

Locate the longest wall and lay parallel to that wall

1. Start by measuring the width of the floor (wall to wall measurements at right angles to the run of the boards). 2. Black builders polythene sheeting with a thickness of 0.2 mm should be laid to act as a moisture barrier. The sheeting must have 10–40 cm taped overlap and continue up all walls at least 5 cm. All seams must be secured with a plastic tape. 3. The flooring underlay is unrolled so that all ends and sides fit neatly against walls. It is important to ensure that seams between lengths butt together to avoid any overlap. Tape should be used to secure all sides and seams. (Note: some underlays incorporate rubber foam and moisture barrier in the same roll.) 4. Lay the first board with the tongue facing the wall. Continue with the second board, ensuring that the end joins are firmly glued or locked. Cut the last board to length if necessary. A gap of 8 mm must be left around the perimeter of all walls. 5. Start the second row using the off-cut from the previous row and continue this method throughout the remainder of the installation. Ensure that all butt joins are offset by at least 300 mm. The boards in the final row will often need to be cut lengthwise. To mark the width of this cut, place the final board to be laid precisely on top of the last board. Using a floorboard off-cut, slide the off-cut along the wall and scribe the board using a pencil placed against the off-cut. Cut the board along the line.

Ensure that all pre-installation steps are taken.

2. Always ensure a moisture barrier is painted on new and ground floor slabs. Fethers recommends moisture barriers for all projects. Moisture barriers must be from a reputable manufacturer and installed in accordance with all instructions. 3. Glue used in adhering floor to sub-floor must be manufactured for that purpose and from a reputable manufacturer. Again, all installation instructions must be strictly adhered to. Fethers strongly recommends the use of professional and accredited installation teams.
