At GEOCON, exceptional is the norm. GEOCON is a powerhouse property development, construction and hotel management company focused on residential apartments and hotel development. We are one of the few integrated development and construction companies in Canberra which allows us to increase efficiencies and deliver a higher level of sophistication in the affordable sector. One of the other core functions of our business is our hotels division – Abode Hotels – which currently includes assets in Gungahlin, Woden, Tuggeranong and Narrabundah as well as new hotels in the pipeline for the city and Murrumbateman, NSW. Each hotel offers apartmentstyle rooms with full kitchen and
laundry facilities, as well as hotel conferencing facilities and a fully licenced restaurant in Abode Hotel Woden – No. 10 Restaurant and Bar – which opened in September 2016. GEOCON’s success is underpinned by the experience and expertise of our people in their respective fields. As well as the core development, construction and hotel teams, the group has a competent support team of qualified accountants, human resources, communications and marketing professionals and efficient administrators – each playing an important role in the overall success of the organisation. Our team works together to build the nation’s capital and in return we offer them training and development opportunities that allow them to enhance their skillset and pursue career ambitions. By investing in our employees and providing a supportive team culture, we can ensure our staff are always challenged, engaged and interested – which in turn returns value back into the business. As part of that, a core part of our business is providing career pathways that lead into real job opportunities, such as our cadetships and the Academy Abode vocational training program. Good leadership starts from the top and guiding this team is a highly capable management team that brings extensive hands-on project experience in all facets of property development to the table. Born and raised in Canberra, Nick Georgalis is passionate about creating a progressive and vibrant city, parallel to the fast pace at which Canberra is evolving. Nick is the creator, Managing Director and driving force behind GEOCON and Abode Hotels. He leads the executive management team and provides the strategic direction for the group, with a focus on expanding the company’s interests in hotels, commercial acquisitions and development. After building a successful career in the construction sector in engineering, project management and leadership roles, Nick recognised the need for a player in the residential housing market that would produce an exceptional product, but deliver it to the market at an affordable price. The areas that Nick vowed to focus on to achieve this were price, inclusions, sustainability, customer service, execution, amenities and lifestyle.
Ravi Underwood joined GEOCON as Chief Financial Officer in mid-2016 and is responsible for managing all the financial matters of the business, including cost control measures, cash flow management and forecasting, corporate governance and advising on strategic investment and financing decisions. A Big 4 CA qualified CFO, Ravi has completed an MBA and Masters of Taxation from the University of New South Wales as well as a Bachelor of Economics from Sydney University, complemented by nearly 20 years of experience working mainly with ASX100 listed businesses in Australia. Beginning his career in chartered accounting, Ravi continually progressed to leadership executive roles specialising in strategic management and financial restructures, predominantly within the mining and resources sector. Some of his career achievements include the facilitation of mergers
In 2006 Nick realised his vision by launching his own business and the following year GEOCON was born with just six employees and a turnover of $5 million in its first year. Since then the company has grown to around 180 staff, has an annual turnover of $200-250 million and engages up to 2,000 workers at a time, depending on project phases.
GEOCON might be one of Canberra’s most successful property developers, but Nick doesn’t see that as a time to slow down with new and innovative projects always in the pipeline. “To remain as Canberra’s eminent developer, we need to evolve and challenge ourselves. We have grown from producing single dwellings to high-rise apartments, hotels and now mixed-use precincts. I’m excited to see what we achieve in years to come.”

My role with the business is to implement financing and corporate solutions to help the company deliver on its major projects.”

Peter joined GEOCON in 2013 and manages the performance and successful delivery of GEOCON’s development projects, ensuring that design goals are achieved in the end product delivered to the market. As part of his role, Peter manages key internal and external stakeholders including authorities, consultants, contractors and sub-contractors, marketing and sales teams, and financiers, from the drawing board through the construction process to the end sale. Peter has a wealth of experience in property development having begun his career as a specialist land development analyst, advising on a broad range of matters across the ACT.

As well as managing the corporate team and hotel managers across multiple properties under the Abode Hotels brand, Rien is responsible for the direction and performance of the brand and its delivery to the Canberra market.

The most rewarding is seeing that vision come to life and leading the development team to implement the project and deliver the best possible product to the market. As GEOCON continues to grow, the quality of our work just keeps getting better.”
Over the years Peter has worked his way up to project manager roles in both the private and public sectors where he was responsible for the development of numerous large-scale, multiunit projects in Canberra. Rien joined GEOCON in 2014 as General Manager of Abode Hotels, bringing with him more than 15 years of experience in the hospitality and accommodation industry in Canberra and around Australia.
He also has expertise with developments delivered through public/private joint venture partnerships as well as project feasibility and strategic capabilities, and property market insight.
His knowledge of hotel operations, refurbishments and refits, food and beverage, conferencing and brand delivery and positioning make him the perfect leader for Abode Hotels, not to mention his previous experience working in a range of ownership and management models and with strata and body corporate arrangements. Before starting at GEOCON Rien held senior roles during the opening of several hotels, ensuring
he is well-suited to manage the growing Abode Hotels portfolio. This includes hotels currently operating in Gungahlin, Woden, Tuggeranong and Narrabundah, and the development of new hotels to be built in Murrumbateman and the city. “It’s exciting to be leading a great team in a fast growing hotel brand, providing high quality, service and value experiences to our guests.”
Starting with GEOCON as a project engineer in 2010, Damon worked his way up to Operations Manager and now General Manager – Construction, where he is responsible for overseeing the successful delivery of more than $200 million in construction works across multiple sites. Damon has extensive experience in major residential and commercial developments, which gives him the experience required to successfully manage GEOCON’s larger-scale projects. Since working for the company, Damon has managed a number of projects across Canberra including Observatory Living at Wright, Zest, Chelsea Village, Centro Apartments, Juliana House refurbishment (Abode Woden), Fringe at Epicentre, Cavan at Wright, Gungahlin Childcare Centre, Newtown and Home at Crace, and Vue Apartments.

SOUTHPORT Southport offers the amenities of a six-star resort, with magnificent mountain and lake views. Set to become Tuggeranong’s tallest residential apartment building at 12 storeys high, Southport will be Canberra’s largest single staged multi-unit development. REPUBLIC This is Republic, where Canberra’s first glass towers and tallest building are just two of the striking features. Designed by Fender Katsalidis Architects and Oculus Urban Design, the award-winning team behind the iconic NewActon precinct, Republic will become Canberra’s newest destination. Aligning with GEOCON’s vision to build thriving town centres, this development is well-positioned to become the new heart of Belconnen with restaurants, bars and shopping facilities located right nearby.
The site is also close to other commercial and office areas in Belconnen, UC Senior Secondary College, Canberra International Sports and Aquatic Centre (CISAC), Westfield Shopping Centre and the University of Canberra.
Once complete, Republic will become a proud symbol of a growing, aspiring and dynamic capital city and will showcase Canberra’s next tallest tower. Designed to be a space for the community as much as for residents, the precinct’s buildings are arranged around a large public square – the ‘heart’ of the development – complemented by activated internal laneways, ‘green’ stairs, retail and commercial spaces, restaurants and cafes, planters with wide footpaths, street trees, and bicycle parking.
Located on a 1.6 hectare block opposite the Lake Ginninderra waterfront – the precinct is well connected to surrounding open space and amenities with easy links to the lake’s edge, cycle and walking paths and public transport.
MIDNIGHT As Midnight strikes, tomorrow beckons. GEOCON has set its sights on transforming the Northbourne Avenue corridor with its latest development, Midnight. Adjacent to the Elouera Street light rail stop, Midnight will be a new mixed-use precinct for Braddon, incorporating residential apartments, a 160-room hotel under the Abode Hotels chain, 2500m2 of ground floor retail and commercial and a basement car park with 200 dedicated public parking spaces.

GEOCON has again teamed up with world-renowned designers Fender Katsalidis Architects and OCULUS – specialists in urban planning and design – to deliver Midnight. The vision ensures the project interacts with the light rail to enhance pedestrian connectivity between Northbourne Avenue and Mort Street. Midnight is inspired by its surroundings and has been designed to play on the duality and unique characteristics of Northbourne Avenue and Mort Street.
NEW HOTELS Abode Hotels is expanding into regional NSW for the first time with plans to build a 52-room hotel in Murrumbateman. The new hotel will be located at the Fairley development near the village centre, incorporating a commercial and tourist precinct, boutique brewery, café, bakery, visitors centre, childcare centre, children’s park, medical services and a post office.
It will help boost tourism in the area and support local businesses by creating more accommodation options close to the region’s vineyards, which will allow them to stay longer and better savour the experience.
The hotel will feature a large, flexible foyer space and public area that can be used for a range of activities. There will also be some suites to accommodate larger groups, including wedding parties.

Abode’s first venture outside the ACT is set to fill a major gap in the accommodation market as there are currently no hotels between Gungahlin and Yass.
Leveraging off the growth of the Kingston district, Abode Hotels has completed a purchase of a 900mÂ˛ block of land at the old Kingston shops. Located at the corner of Eyre and Kennedy streets, the new hotel is adjacent to popular restaurants, shopping and other facilities, as well as being just a short drive from the Kingston foreshore and Manuka village.
Kingston will be Abodeâ€™s closest hotel to the city until the anticipated opening of Braddon in 2019.

WAYFARER This is quite literally the pinnacle of Canberra inner-city living. Wayfarer is an 88m high, 27 storey residential development located in the Belconnen Town Centre. Becoming Canberra’s tallest residential tower, this high-profile project includes 331 residential apartments and a provision for commercial space at ground level.

Burgmann College Our association with Burgmann College supports current and potential residents who are in need of financial support through the College’s Bursary and Scholarships Program. Along with fundraising activities, GEOCON will be spending time with residents in round table discussions and mentoring sessions, offering business experience to Burgmann’s future leaders. Canberra Hospital Foundation GEOCON is especially proud of our unique affiliation with the Canberra Hospital Foundation. In conjunction with our Abode Apartment Hotels, a twobedroom family apartment has been donated at Abode Woden. The room accommodates up to four people for extended stays at no cost, providing some comfort and relief for guests who find themselves in a time of need. Abode’s General Manager of Hotels Rien Donkin said “We understand that a family member being hospitalised for any condition is an extremely difficult time, both emotionally and financially. By providing accommodation close to the hospital we hope the burden is eased in at least a small way.”

Menslink GEOCON is aware and concerned of the prevalence of men’s health issues in the construction industry, including mental health, with research showing that construction workers are at a high risk of experiencing some form of mental illness. Canberra Raiders Recognising how a strong sporting culture can have a positive impact on the community, GEOCON and Abode Hotels have been proud to partner with the Canberra Raiders National Rugby League team. To help the Diamantina Cub Scout group celebrate their 100th anniversary, GEOCON hoisted the Centenary flag above its Wayfarer and Southport buildings by crane, where it was displayed for two weeks as part of global celebrations. The Scout group wanted to fly the flag as high as possible with Wayfarer – the highest residential building in Canberra – providing the ideal platform.
Aspen Island Theatre Co. We were delighted to be involved with the local theatre scene by supporting The Slip Lane, a production from contemporary Canberra playmakers, the Aspen Island Theatre Company. This original play was a humorous relationship drama and political satire that offers a critique of modern Australia through the eyes of characters living in Canberra’s most northern urban precinct, Gungahlin. GEOCON General Manager of Development Peter Micalos said “Hearing that the play was set in Gungahlin and focused on communities, we saw a natural fit with our goals of building local town centres that provide public spaces for residents to socialise – with family, friends and each other.”
