Exposé : Refiguring the Spiritual : MARK TAYLOR

AGENTS IV

BEAU DAVIS, s3365858

“ . . . a sense of standing on the planet . . . where you could feel geologic time. “

These concepts employed by Taylor speak of mutual ownership, accessibility and territory of a space unlimited and often forgotten. It is the idea of altering the perception of space through creatively exposing the hidden lies of our distorted comprehension techniques. The space actually remains unchanged and physically void of differentiation apart from one moment of Exposé - where a lie is revealed and a truth realised.

“ . . . more that 10, 000 gather in Times Square to receive updates of the boxing match between Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier . . . “

In comparison to its current state of embellishment, Times Square resembles a scene from a post-apocalyptic motion picture. That is, if it weren’t for the 10000 anonymous locals lining the streets. Adorned in strictly architectural detailing, the urban forms would have appeared typical if viewed of this era, though with only contemporary understandings of the space, it appears completely alternative and behavioural norms begin to shift.

Trompe-l’œil : French for : decieve the eye This image captured of The Sydney Harbour Bridge replaces its over-typified and usual context of the body of water it crosses with a foregrounding neighbourhood scene. In this way, it becomes confronting due to it’s apparent juxtaposition and surprising due to exposing it’s true relationship with the context of Sydney.

Traces: Light + Movement : Ghosting of movement patterns and the remnants of what was - film captures the space-time relationship of water vessels. Film becomes a demarcation of light and form, the interactions of these two counterparts and where their relationship begins to dissolve. Light registers existence and the posibility for a universe - without it we would be confined to abstractions of our mental capacity. We would not exist within anything collectively defined, more so a body within a void of seemingly incoherent space and matter.

Point of View : Akin to the relationship of a “town centre” and it’s adjacent arterial road, this image displays the transient markings left in space by motorists all travelling to different locations - yet confined to common routes and paths of access. This 30 second exposure also identifies a 2 dimensional representation of the backdrop to this scene - a composition which is unique to the specific vantage point of the camera. Similar to our understanding of the universe being relatively confined to a single point in space.
