The Arguineguin Parade satisfying to see the great number of tourist and foreign visitors attending this very special fiesta. Boats from all southern ports gathered at the mouth, anxiously awaiting the virgin, which included big fishing boats, sail boats of all sizes, small motor launches and even jet skis; most of these with their music systems turned on to help create a party mood and packed to capacity with a great number of guests ready for the big day!
Once again the time came around for all sailors to worship and pay tribute to their saint, La Virgen del Carmen, who it is said watches over them throughout the year ensuring their safe return home. The legend says it was sailors who found her image at sea and since then she became their protector on the long voyages in search of fish, and every year fishing villages around Spain pay tribute to her with a huge boat parade, and so this year I went to the Arguineguin one to live the experience like one more. And so at ten o’clock in the morning on 18th of July, I found myself in Arguineguin which was packed with people from all over the island; again it was extremely

At 10.30 the virgin image of El Carmen was loaded onto the chosen boat for this year and who had the honour of carrying her. This privilege is only reserved for the professional fishing boats of the harbour of Arguineguin and which change every year. The image is carried by the fishermen themselves, followed closely by a massive crowed of devotees who always congregate to see her leave, and a priest is also present in order to perform a small mass before her voyage to the port of Mogán. Once everyone is aboard the boat they all set off; obviously the vessel carrying her leads the procession followed closely by the other fishing boats and then by the rest of the recreational vessels. The police are there to ensure that this order is kept at all times and of
course to ensure the security of the parade as many try to get close to the virgin sometimes creating dangerous situations. Upon arrival at the port of Mogán the virgin is unloaded and presented to the image located there, then in a small ceremony the two images kiss each other in a symbol of respect, and is followed once more by a small religious mass. After this both “cofradias”, fishing cooperatives, offerl the visitors paella and grilled sardines as well as soft drinks. The party then begins in earnest as the boats all look for a space to drop anchor in front of beaches and coves located between the two villages and then they spend the day drinking, eating and dancing until the sun goes down. In some cases the boats party until the early hours of the morning as some are just not willing to call it a day! As far as fiestas go, El Carmen is definitely one of my favourites, the atmosphere is incredible and the devotion these fishermen and sailors have for their virgin is compared to no other. It is a party which everyone can enjoy, from the younger ones of the family to the oldest, and above all it makes a fantastic day out. By Tito Cabral
