Gratitude from the Directors

Dear Camp Family,

As the snow melts, Geneva Glen awakens with the promise of spring and the anticipation of a vibrant season ahead. We extend our warmest greetings to our beloved Camp Family, eagerly anticipating the opportunity to share our boundless excitement and a list of things we are grateful for the past year and the upcoming summer.

Our hearts overflow with gratitude for the abundance of campers eagerly awaiting their summer adventures. With over 1100 enrolled, our bunks brim with expectation for the joyous laughter and cherished memories that will fill the air. We remain steadfast in our commitment to nurturing the holistic well-being of each camper, providing a safe haven where they can flourish physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.

We are thankful to welcome back familiar veteran faces alongside a fresh wave of enthusiastic new counselors, all dedicated to upholding the traditions that define the Geneva Glen experience. These caring leaders represent the perfect balance of honoring our legacy while embracing the energy and creativity of the next generation.

Gratitude abounds for the array of enhancements awaiting our campers. These include the completion of the North Hill (Boys) bathroom, new decks on several dorms, the revitalization of the Lee House situated behind Vespers Hill, new carpeting in both the Lodge and Health Center, progress on the forestry project at the Outlook, refreshed landscaping at Mackenzie and Silver Birch, renovations to the Tree House, and many other exciting improvements. Furthermore, we are diligently progressing with our large-scale project development, including the Wastewater Treatment Plan and the CRC/ Tumes building.

We greatly value the ongoing progress in enhancing our camp programs. Guided by camper, parent, and counselor feedback, our year-round staff diligently implements various improvements to elevate the summer experience. These “One million, one-dollar solutions” refine our already exceptional programs to ensure every aspect shines brightly, like our new “Little Libraries,” morning yoga, musical jam sessions, and the revival of the “Biffers & Boppers” evening play, to name just a few. Our commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion is evident through initiatives such as providing more tuition assistance than ever in our history, creating a DEI landing page on our website, and improving our seasonal staff recruiting practices.

We sincerely thank those who generously contributed to our success on Colorado Gives Day and other fundraising efforts! Additionally, we are profoundly grateful for the dedication of our volunteers, who selflessly devote their time and expertise to serving on our Board of Directors and Committees and assisting with events like the Meadow Time Soirée and Check-In & Check-Out. Their invaluable contributions exemplify the spirit of community that defines Geneva Glen.

These achievements are only possible with the tireless dedication of our year-round leadership team. We praise Anne Baalman, Grace Campbell, Mackenzie DeMoor, Emily Jacobs, Nick Kolomitz, Pete Mahan, Cas Robison, and Kathy Thornton for their unwavering support, innovation, and loyalty.

As we approach another unforgettable summer, gratitude fills our hearts for the journey ahead. Together, we eagerly await forging new friendships, sharing values, and experiencing the magic that awaits us all.

With boundless excitement and appreciation,

Christa & Reid

On the Dog Beat-Welcome Campers

Pup reporters Gus, Maisie, and Juniper here for some barktastic news from Geneva Glen!

First off, we want to give a friendly, warm welcome to our new campers! There are 275 of you who are coming to camp for the very first time. We are thrilled to have you join us, and you are in for a fantastic experience. Geneva Glen is a place where you can be yourself. You’ll create memories that

will last a lifetime while you try new things, discover new talents, challenge yourself, and make new friends. There’s never a dull moment at GG. You’ll explore the woods looking for magical creatures, swing on Oh Mama (our GIANT swing), ride horses, splash around in the pool, eat candy at our store owned by Umlaut the Hobbit, sing songs in the Council Ring around a campfire, and so much more. We can’t wait to meet you, and we know many of you are excited about camp, too!

With excitement can come nerves, which is totally normal. You aren’t alone! Whether you need a guide to your new surroundings, someone to talk to, or just a high-five to celebrate your achievements, our counselors are here for you. Lots of them were campers just like you, so they know how it feels to go from feeling unsure to having a blast at GG. Plus, you’ll have camp friends in no time! So, get ready for the adventure of a lifetime.

Now, on to the latest news! There are meetings where the year-round staff invite us to nap while they talk about the coolest counselors joining us this year and how to make the camp programs even more pawsome! They also talk about well-being because that’s a top priority, right? Outside time is our jam, so we’ve been hiking like there’s no tomorrow. We made it to the Outlook, where they’re wrapping up some wildfire mitigation stuff. Woof, that’s a big win for safety! And oh, we have a pair of wise ol’ owls that love chitchatting with the trees by the Big Swing. Plus, there’s a new smell in town - fresh paint in the swanky new North Hill bathroom!

Remember those gloopy globules on the yucky carpet in the Lodge? Well, fear not, friends! The Lodge is gleaming like a new bone because we’ve got spanking new carpet. No globules in sight! But oh, the memories of those sweet treats... sigh.

Ah, how could we forget the Winter Workshop session back in December? Those teenagers sure knew how to have a blast! They hung out, frolicked in the snow, exchanged gifts, and spread gratitude like confetti. It was a magical time filled with laughter and joy!

Camp life is calling, pals! So wrap up those school tasks, and let’s send out a howl for summer to hurry up and arrive! Can’t wait to see you all bounding around the Council Ring soon!

Catch you later, alligators!

Around the Property

Wildfire Mitigation

After a meticulous and methodical planning process, we are thrilled to announce the completion of cutting in the GGIII project area, north of the

Outlook and Marshmallow Meadow! Covering 50 acres, the treatment involved over 81 log trucks, removing thousands of trees. As we transition into spring, our next focus will be on masticating slash and small wood that couldn’t be hauled out initially. Additionally, we have slated the area for noxious weed treatment over the next three years. Excitingly, we are applying for grant funding to partake in a program with the Jefferson Conservation District. This initiative aims to implement chemical treatment and mitigation of invasive scrub oak on the property. During the upcoming summer, we will conduct tests on approximately 10 acres. Looking ahead to 2024 and 2025, we have committed to treating 40 acres annually. On an intermediate timeline, we remain dedicated to maintaining the acreage that has undergone treatment. While the GGIV project area has yet to be identified, we have prospective areas in mind. We will collaborate closely with the Conservation District to update our forest management plan and secure new funding before selecting the GGIV project area.

Costume Room Remodel

Winter marked the commencement of plans for renovations and repairs to the CRC/Costume room building post-camp season in August. Recognizing the need for significant structural repairs to the foundation and roof, we seized this opportunity to redesign the interior for enhanced utility now and in the future. The primary focus of the renovation will be to accommodate the personal storage and workspace needs of our summer staff. Simultaneously, the Alchemy area will relocate from the adjacent hut to an improved space within the renovated building.

New Carpet

In a recent endeavor, Dorms C, D, G, B, H, and A received brand-new decks and stairs during the fall season. The project involved the replacement of old, rotten joists, redecking with composite materials, and installing new metal railings and composite top caps. This durable and long-lasting upgrade ensures these facilities will serve us for many years. we are even more excited to embark on a new era of collecting stains (and memories) in the dining hall.

We decided to install new carpet in the Lodge and Health Center. While the fresh carpet is undeniably lovely,

Volunteer Projects

In December, Luke Miller from Troop 633 in Highlands Ranch completed his Eagle Service Project, constructing two new cornhole game sets and a large Plinko game board. These delightful additions will enhance our Meadow Time and special events. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Luke and Troop 633 for their unwavering support of Geneva Glen through service projects!

News from the Barn

Happy Rainbow Trails to three beloved members of the G/ herd: Harlie, Winnie, and Digger. Harlie, with her cleverness, athleticism, and bravery, was a true jack-of-all-trades. From leading countless trail rides to carrying jousting knights in our imaginative adventures, she proved herself time and time again as a reliable and spirited companion. Harlie’s independent spirit kept her riders honest and engaged, while her soulful nature endeared her to all who knew her.

Winnie, with her strength and elegance, exemplified unwavering loyalty to her horse family. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of her companions, Kizzi, Roxi, and Karma, who are leaning on each other for support. We will miss Winnie’s mischievous ways, especially as she blossomed into a steadfast camper horse.

Digger, one of GG’s cherished babies, held a special place in the hearts of campers and staff alike. His endearing name originated from his playful antics as a foal, relentlessly attempting to dig his way out of fences. Despite his mischievous beginnings, Digger transformed into a gentle and trustworthy companion, his presence in the barn becoming a constant source of joy and comfort. We take solace that he may now be reunited with his beloved sister, Flossie, galloping freely in greener pastures beyond the horizon.

Alumni Spotlight

We proudly announce that the American Camp Association has recognized esteemed GG alum Johnny Domenico, with the National Service Award, given to recognize continued and increasing service to ACA beyond the local level. Johnny began his career as an 11-year-old camper at Geneva Glen Camp in Colorado. He spent his next 14 summers at Geneva Glen before moving on to a full-time position at Sanborn Western Camps and volunteering for the ACA Rocky Mountain Fall Conference. Johnny returned to Geneva Glen in 2011 and became an ACA standards visitor while also beginning to volunteer alongside the ACA National Conference planning teams. Since 2020, Johnny has been serving as a full member of the Conference Planning Team and bringing school-based, camp-style programming to Rocky Mountain Kids’ mountain region after-school programs and day camps. We take immense pride in Johnny's accomplishments and express our gratitude for his invaluable contributions to Geneva Glen and his exemplary leadership in the camp industry. Congratulations, Johnny!

Ozzie Baron is using his foundational experiences as a camper and counselor at Geneva Glen to help support children and families who have been impacted by disasters. As the Deputy Director and CoFounder of the nonprofit organization Project:Camp, he’s spent the past five years building out a program to pop up trauma-informed day camps in communities hit by wildfires, hurricanes, tornados, and other emergency situations. Project:Camp has deployed across the U.S., most recently setting up camps in response to the Maui wildfires that swept through the community of Lahaina last summer. Ozzie’s unwavering dedication to supporting children and families impacted by disasters is truly commendable, serving as a shining example of how the values instilled at Geneva Glen can extend beyond its grounds and positively influence the wider community.

If you’d like to learn more about the Project:Camp mission to provide care for children, relief for families and resilience for communities, you can check out their website at projectcamp.co or reach out to Ozzie at ozzie@projectcamp.co. They are always on the lookout for volunteer counselors to help staff camps, and are generally friendly people who love to talk about what they do and how it helps kids recover more effectively from disasters!

In Loving Memory - Remembering Mary Ariki

For over seven decades, Geneva Glen has been blessed with the beneficence, kindness, and undying devotion of Mary Ariki. Mary, like a Japanese Chrysanthemum, expressed beautiful, humble service and unselfish love towards everything about the Spirit of the Glen. When she married Sammy, her admiration for the Gilmores and the atmosphere they created at camp became a paramount value in her life. Mary endeavored to know that “love keeps no records of wrongs.” Her incarceration at Manzanar (US War Relocation Center) in Death Valley was referred to rarely. Mary Ariki could be likened to an aroma of Spirit. In the Language of Flowers, she is the Bluebell for constancy, Black Poplar for courage, Chrysanthemum for truth, Clove for dignity, and Oakleafed Geranium for true friendship. Mary’s name is already engraved on our memory wall near the Chapel. When her dear Sammy passed, she wanted her name to always be with his. Their names are together, and in love, they remain together in our memories. How grateful we are that the Glen found her.
