A Letter from the Directors Dear Camp Fam ily,

We hope this edition of the GG Breeze finds you in high spirits, relishing the joys of fall. After our remarkable summer and a bustling September, which included the Meadow Time Soirée and the honoring of Ken Atkinson’s Gifts, we often find ourselves fielding the question from camper parents and alumni: “How was the summer?”

There’s a lot to unpack in answering that question! To begin with, it was the same cherished haven of summers past, complete with horseback riding, archery, swimming, and singing at Council Fires.

Laughter and jubilant sounds filled the air, old friendships were rekindled, and new bonds were forged. We shared scrumptious meals, once again embracing communal dining as an entire camp.

Our traditional events, such as the Dirty Derby, Rendezvous, Merlin’s Masque, Pageant, and Chautauqua, were celebrated with great enthusiasm.

Beyond these “normal” experiences, a great deal more transpired. Camp became a sanctuary for those campers who had endured personal tragedies throughout the year, offering them a place to rediscover a semblance of happiness, love, and healing. Those grappling with the pressures of “fitting in” found a community that embraced them with support and patience, enabling them to cast aside social expectations and revel in the joy of silliness with friends. Tears were shed, both from sorrow and loss, as well as from the sheer elation of shared moments. Some campers conquered their homesickness, emerging with newfound self-confidence and independence. Vulnerability was celebrated, as campers and staff openly shared their imperfections, fears, and hopes. Camp was a realm of messiness, not just in the “Dirty Derby” sense, but also in the emotional challenges it presented. Campers learned that imperfections did not diminish their worthiness; rather, they enriched it.

Through these diverse experiences, our campers discovered the enduring values of Geneva Glen: genuine connections, kindness, empathy, acceptance, personal growth, and the encouragement to confront challenges.

Above all, it remained a place where they could truly belong, within an extraordinary, non-judgmental, and loving community unlike any other.

In response to the question, “How was the summer?” we can simply echo the wisdom that Ken Atkinson imparted to our staff each summer: “It was EVERYTHING.” We are immensely proud of our campers and staff for ushering in the next 100 years of Geneva Glen during this past summer. They continue to demonstrate how GG transcends the ordinary, nurtures the best in one another, and empowers our community to find strength, hope, and the capacity to change lives.

Celebrating Summer

High ligh ts from th e Season

After commemorating 100 years of camp history, we couldn’t resist looking to the future. The summer of 2023 marked an exceptional beginning to Geneva Glen’s next century. Our chosen theme for the season was “The Next 100 Years.”

first session, “Seedlings & Stardust,” was an enchanting experience! We Seedlings & Stardust The introduced our youngest campers to the essence of GG and a glimpse into “The Magic

of the Glen.” The highlight of Seedlings was acquainting the campers with the myriad of mystical creatures residing at GG. Notably, we had special appearances from magical characters, including Gnessa and Gnorbit, our esteemed head Gnomes, Ezekiel Magic, Tommy Two-Foot the Hobbit, Lemon Grass the Dragon, Jack E. Lope the Dragonologist, and Sparkles the Unicorn! On the last evening, we showcased the exceptional talents of our campers and staff under the Geneva Glen Big Top Circus and concluded the session with an exhilarating carnival.

Our Myths campers arrived brimming with curiosity, eager for their Geneva Glen adventure. The week started with an enchanting Council Fire featuring uproarious skits and songs that had everyone in stitches. Following this, we held our “Advengures Dinner,” during which each cabin and dorm played a pivotal role in helping an Advengures character regain their lost magic. Special recognition goes to our exceptionally creative staff and Special Programs Director, Ainsley Dodson, for masterminding this thrilling escapade. As always, the campers enjoyed a night under the stars after embarking on a mystical Treasure Hunt in pursuit of the elusive golden S’mores. The session peaked with the exhilarating Dirty Derby! Not even a little rain and cold could deter our campers from gleefully diving into the mud, sliding through Jell-O, and giving their counselors a colorful makeover. We crowned Colten Swanson as the Mud Pie King and Annie Baxter as the Mud Pie Queen, Mud Pie Monarchs celebrating this summer’s muddiest champions!

Myths & Magic

Heritage campers were warmly greeted with a spirited performance of Am erican Heritage American “Rawhide” by the GG staff, setting the stage for two weeks of Old West-inspired fun. The

session’s concluding days featured The Wild West Show and a festive Rendezvous where each Family Group contributed dances, games, and treats. The evening closed in the Council Ring with recognition for award recipients and campers who completed their American Heritage tracks: Headliner Level 1: Anya Mangle, Bird Cassidy, Emma Elkjer, Flora Tversky, Kyra Amass, Levi Matley, Logan Ambroggio, Mia Kurtz, Olivia Brown, and Tye Manheim. Trail Blazer Level 1: Campbell Osher, Gus O’Reilly, Jillian Hills, Parker Shepard, and Savannah Wright. Naturalist Level 1: Lauren Baak, Logan Ambroggio, and Soren Forschner. Buckskinner Level 1: Charlie Deasy. Buck Skinner Level 2: Peter Solan. Range Rider Level 2: Dillon Jones.

The final act of the evening presented “The Spirit of American Heritage Award,” which honors exceptional campers and staff for their outstanding leadership, dedication, appreciation for diverse cultures, and enthusiasm for sharing cherished traditions. Each Family Group nominated one camper for this award: Colin Baak of the Tommy Knockers, Michela McGibbon of the Buckaroos, Luana Morerira of the Prospectors, Livia Gombeski of the Plains Tribes, Liam OBrian of the Pioneers, Lauren Baak of the Scouts, Peter Solan of the Mountaineers, Alex Vasquez of the Revolutionaries, and Eliza Lennox of the Mountain Tribes. In addition, our phenomenal staff had seven nominees: Avery Lankford, Chewy LeBlanc, Matt Peters, Meg Mcferson, Michael Tidd, Rob Jacoby, and Seamus Cassidy. The remarkable Caroline Keefe and Ainsley Dodson were the camper and staff recipients, respectively.

The Jolly Band heralded the Orders of the Glen, marking the start of another glorious summer of Knighthood. Our dedicated staff set the stage with tales of Merlin, Arthur, and the Knights of Camelot, while Award Winning Smiles! songs like “Witchcraft,” “Rose,” and “Follow the Gleam” once more infused the Council Ring with a magical spirit. For Sunday Vespers services, we were privileged to have John Vogt and Tim Hogan return as special guest speakers. John delved deep into the story of Calderic and the significance of heroes, while Tim explored the theme of loyalty within Knighthood through the legend of Percival and his quest for the Grail. Merlin’s Masque showcased dramatic talent, including Cleo Cotgageorge as Merlin the Child, Trey Harris as Merlin the Boy, and Logan Ambroggio as

the fittingly named Merlin Ambrosius. The dancers dazzled, culminating in a beautiful performance of the classic Lady of the Lake dance by Emma Elkjer. The Pulling of the Sword was as enchanting as ever. Logan Ambroggio drew the sword from the stone, and Queen’s Rose grew for Mia Fitzpatrick, who became Geneva Glen’s 85th King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. Their court included Jake Ammann, Chuck Bedard, Bird Cassidy, Hayes Dwyer, Sachin Hansen, Harper Hodgson, Ginna Jacoby, Sophia Johnson, Mia Kurtz, Owen Lichtenfels, Harper Luthy, Anya Mangle, Bo Ooms, Aiden Pass, Tatiana Robinson, Ben Silver, Katie Smits, Luca Spurlin, Adele Swanson, and Kit Witwer. Both sessions concluded with numerous camper and staffacolades in the realm of Knighthood. Will Austad, Josh Bertoli, Matt Burkhart, Emilio Canete Hand, Grant Cramer, Hayes Dwyer, All Hail the King & Queen!

Sachin Hansen, Trey Harris, Owen Licktenfels, Alex Long, Lucah Meyer, Niall McDermott, Camden Reeves, Colby Sarsfield, Bear (Reed) Smith, and Nate Wood attained the rank of Sir Knight as campers.

Atlas Estes, Logan Genova, Logan Henry, Meyer Jackson, Rowan Neilio, Cas Robison, Reid Stevens, Tripp Thompson, John Sullivan, and Guy de Verges were our staff who attained the rank of Sir Knight. The Bronze Horseshoe was presented to Logan Ambroggio.

Drew Birdsong, Miles Dwyer, Rob Jacoby, Tag Lees, Orson Lankford, Luca Maffoni, Cas Robison, Weston Schwartz, and Michael Tidd were awarded Silver Spurs. Jules Archuleta, Cassie Dugdale, Ainsley Dodson, Emory Gerlach, Molly Grylicki, Avery Hudson, Ella Jiron, and Avery Lankford received Roses. Seamus Cassidy, Noah “Chewy” LeBlanc, Ryan Porter, Noah Schwalger, Zach Triplett, and Colin Yakely were recognized as Gold Stars, and Mackenzie DeMoor, Lucy Grylicki, Zoe Halax, and Sally Johnson joined the ranks of the Ladies of the Bracelet.

and dorm representing a country and competing for medals and points. Campers and counselors of all ages participated in the classic Musical Revue, a fantastic evening filled with GG’s take on songs and dances from various musicals. The production, led

by Ella Jiron and Abby Romero, was a resounding success, featuring a crowd-pleasing performance by the North Hill staff of “Ken” from the Barbie movie.

As World Friendship drew to a close, the final day celebrated Chautauqua, complete with food, songs, and captivating performances. The evening culminated with the presentation of awards. Sam Canzoneri, Quinny Peikin, and Ella Terch received Geneva Glen’s Sportsmanship Award. The 2023 Peace Prize was rightfully awarded to Sachin Hansen and Avery Lent, recognizing their outstanding contributions. Peace Prize nominees included exceptional GG campers Logan Ambroggio, Sam Canzoneri, Maggie Clark, Tate Clark, Emma Elkjer, Drew Finley, Ginna Jacoby, Eli Lipsius, and Mitchell Sindler.

We are profoundly grateful to our campers, staff, and the GG Camp Family for making our 101st summer exceptional. The “Magic of the Glen” is flourishing, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in the summer of 2023 for being such a vital part of our journey!

N ews from th e GG Coral

We welcomed two new additions to the G/ herd this year. We’re pleased to introduce Crane & Roman! Those who fondly remember Indigo and Navajo will find Crane’s demeanor familiar and comforting.

She even scratches her belly on shrubs, just like Navajo did. She has a small stature, a soothing presence, and plenty of grit. She’s a little horse that could! She’s excellent on the trail and resembles the horse version of everyone’s favorite kindergarten teacher. You can find her next to Roman, our other new G/ addition, when she’s not on a trail ride. Roman is the latest G/ Mustang. He is big and strong, yet a gentle giant. Roman spends almost all his time ensuring Crane is safe and comfy. He met Crane for the first time in the trailer between Harmony Equine Center and Geneva Glen, and they emerged at the G/ barn as the best of friends. He’s six years old and only started training this year, so he is still a wrangler-only horse, but he learns quickly! You’ll see him on the camper rail in no time.

Happy Trails, Old Friend We lost an exceptional horse friend this year, folks.

It’s with sadness we report that Thunder has gone on to greener pastures. Nicknamed “Cuddlekins,” his giant, loving eyes, fuzzy fur, and warm heart were a constant source of joy and comfort for everyone at GG. He took exceptional care of kids at the barn, even if he was sometimes confused about whether he was one of the humans or the horses. He was a resilient, kind, and dear friend.

We’ll miss him!

Staff Spotlight

Welcom e Em ily!

We are delighted to announce that Emily Jacobs has joined the year-round staff as our Equine Director! Emily grew up as a Geneva Glen camper, crew member, counselor, and wrangler. Emily’s equine science education and professional experience will help continue the GG barn’s goal to provide the Camp Family with a safe and enjoyable relationship with horses. Her caring and creative energy, both in and out of the stables, will inspire our campers and staff!

Woof woof, dear Campers!

Camp dogs Maisie, Gus, and Juniper here, ready to share some updates and discoveries about our GG adventures. We’ve been missing you and reminiscing about all the exciting and fun times we had this past summer. It indeed was the most fantastic summer at Geneva Glen! Our summer started by welcoming back all our wonderful staff friends after their long winter break. The season kicked off with Seedlings & Stardust, introducing many new camper friends to the camp. We adored the extra scratches and secret treats they’d sneak us when Christa and Reid weren’t watching! Maisie spent more time exploring camp, even revisiting the barn to see her old horse pals. Barn is a fantastic place, full of tantalizing scents for us dogs, but nothing beats helping with “Christa Snacks” and watching all the fun activities the campers were up to. For Juniper, everything was a thrilling first-time experience because it was her debut summer! She got to explore all that GG has to offer while riding around in Pete’s buggy, checking out the projects around camp. We all agree that we absolutely LOVED our new culinary companions from Upper Crust. Chefs Les and Heather genuinely know how to make a dog’s life delightful! And we heard that the kids adored everything they served, too. Maisie’s top pick was the gyros meal, a GG specialty. Gus had a soft spot for the breakfast Kolaches. Juniper, the adventurous foodie of our group, couldn’t contain her joy about the Tostadas, all thanks to the genius creations of the Upper Crust Chefs! The uproarious chorus of “We Want a Chef’s Parade!” had us eagerly barking to join in the chant of compliments for the delightful food.

Another highlight for us three furry friends was when the American Camp Association visited GG. We had a blast showing them around and demonstrating just how fantastic our campers and staff are. The ACA Visitors were so impressed; they even complimented how well we handled our paperwork.

Luckily, we dogs don’t have thumbs, or we’d have to help the year-round team meet all those standards, which they aced! Reid & Christa told us they were especially proud of all the Area Heads who helped GG maintain its ACA accreditation.

We want to share a few other standout things from the summer. First, the newly renovated Merlin’s Spring - it’s beautiful! There’s so much more space for us to cool off on a scorching day, and they even put a sword and stone in the pond.

Next, the 4th of July celebration was picture-perfect with dazzling fireworks, heaps of cotton candy, and the infectious laughter of all the campers. We even enjoyed some leftover watermelon from the carnival! And, of course, we can’t forget about the camp Hobbit, Umlaut, and how he created magic and introduced campers to the wonders of “Magicology.” The most unforgettable memory for us was, without a doubt, THE CAMPERS! We waited all year to run around and play with them. We delighted in watching them conquer the Climb Wall, master the Upper Elements, hike to the Shrine, play G-Smash, and have a blast at the new evening play called “Tea Party,” among many other exciting activities.

So, dear campers, that’s a wrap from us. We are the luckiest trio of dogs, living our dream job where we experience everything beyond our wildest doggie imaginations each summer. Here’s to the next 700 dog years of Geneva Glen! Don’t worry; that’s only 100 human years. See you next summer! Woof Woof!

Events at the Glen

concluded our summer season in August with the 2nd Annual Meadow Th e Meadow Tim e Soirée We Time Soirée. Over 200 guests spent the evening at camp reconnecting with

old friends, making new ones, and having lots of fun! This annual fundraiser supports the Fellowship Fund, which helps with camperships, infrastructure, and other high-impact projects.

After the cocktail hour, attendees were seated in the Meadow. Once again, our incredible Master of Ceremonies, Joe Baumgardner, kicked off the evening, welcoming everyone back to camp. Our theme of “Letters from Camp” brought laughter to the crowd as Joe shared several hilarious camper letters. These letters brought back feelings of belonging and experiencing a place like camp. After speeches from Christa & Reid, a fun Heads or Tail game, a live auction, and a speech from our seasonal staff member, Cole Alsup, we saw an outpouring of support from the Camp Family, contributing over $50,000 for the Fellowship Fund during the paddle raise.

While we celebrate Geneva Glen and its incredible history, the future of Geneva Glen will continue to rely on the support of the Camp Family. Geneva Glen’s resilience comes from the countless donors, volunteers, alums, and board members willing to sacrifice their time, treasure, talent, and testimony to ensure we continue fostering the next generation’s sense of belonging at this magical place.

Honoring Ken’s Gifts

On the 9th of September, 2023, Geneva Glen paid a heartfelt tribute to the cherished friend, mentor, and iconic director, Sir Knight Ken Atkinson. The occasion unfolded in the Council Ring, where melodies filled the air, and treasured memories were exchanged. We collectively indulged in a nostalgic journey, reflecting upon the qualities that endeared Ken to us and the remarkable gifts he bestowed upon all those fortunate enough to cross his path. The multigenerational assembly witnessed Ken’s profound impact on countless lives during his time on this earthly plane.

The gathering commenced with a warm welcome from Nancy Atkinson, followed by Brooke Lindquist’s rendition of “Here We Are Together.” Christa Redford masterfully painted a mental portrait of our guiding figure, “Moses.” Reid McKnight channeled Ken’s essence with a splendid rendition of “I Found a Horseshoe.” Fond memories of Ken were shared by Wendi Sue Grover, Jeff & Alana Gowin, Steve Anthony, Jeannie Wert Gomez, Steve Brownson, and Rick Roadruck. The classic “Cremation of Sam McGee” was eloquently recited by John Vogt, paying tribute to Ken’s memory.

We were deeply honored to host members of Kantorei, Ken’s beloved choir, in attendance. Together with several of Geneva Glen’s finest vocalists, they presented soul-stirring performances of “Shenandoah” and “The Road Home.” A recording of “You’d Better Mind How You Talk,” featuring a solo by Ken, resonated once more in the Council Ring, evoking poignant emotions in all who were present. Nancy conducted us in singing “Minstrel,” the lyrics authored by her and Ken, accompanied by laughter as we tackled its intricate 18-part round, a testament to Ken’s sense of humor and love for music. As Reid McKnight recited “Man of Integrity,” we were reminded of how Ken embodied all that is virtuous, just, and kind in our world – a man “always what he appeared to be - full of truth, candor, and humanity.”

To bring the ceremony to a close, Johnny Domenico led us in a heartfelt rendition of “I Would be True,” and the choir graced us with “How Can I Keep from Singing.” In fellowship, we all joined our voices to pay homage to Ken. After the ceremony, guests lingered and mingled, sharing their memories and love. Ken truly did set these hills ringing. He will live on in our hearts forever and be remembered in endless song.

In Lo ving Memory

We were deeply saddened to hear the news of Palmer “PJ” Hoyt’s passing in July. He attended Geneva Glen in the 1990s as a camper and was a Trainee his last camper summer. He was crowned King of the Glen, with Kate Sommers-Dawes crowned his Queen Guinevere in 1998. He became a staff member and eventually a camper parent to his daughter, Bella. He will be missed by many, and camp is fortunate to have lasting markings of his presence, including the chalice painted on the rocks at the Shrine.

Around the Property GGIII mitigation project is progressing Wildfire Mitigation The excellently. We’ve already completed

inspections and received certification for about half of the 50 acres we planned to work on. While an even more substantial portion of the area has seen some initial cutting, the project’s next phase involves masticating the remaining slash completing the forest treatment. The transformation around the Outlook has been quite dramatic, with new vistas of Mount Blue Sky and Denver now visible, and once-hidden rock outcroppings are now accessible for exploration. We’re eagerly anticipating further changes and the discovery of new spots for overnight stays and hiking!

took advantage of the Water & Electrical Upgrades We extended warm weather this

autumn to undertake additional improvements. We replaced the old and severely corroded galvanized distribution lines downstream of the water tank at Hilltop on North (Boys) Hill, enhancing supply capacity to the buildings on the hill and simplifying winter shutdown procedures.

The primary water line down the hill was buried below the winter frost line to ensure continued water supply to the bathroom during winter. New curb-stop shutoffs have been installed in various buildings on the hill, allowing for independent system disconnection. While trenches were open, we also expanded the electrical system, introducing a new 200-amp feed to divide the north and south halves of the hill and prepare for future upgrades. A new shutoff and a larger panel were installed at the Chapel to facilitate these improvements. also undertaken treehouse repairs in preparation for a fresh Treeh ouse & Staining Projects We’ve coat of stain. Some parts of the deteriorating deck were upgraded

to composite material, and we repaired or replaced various structural components. A soffit was installed under the roof, intended to feature some Magicology or astronomy-themed murals. Additionally, we conducted minor deck repairs and applied a fresh coat of stain to the Health Center, Mackenzie, Ashgrove, Silver, Birch, Mountain, and Meadow, giving the entire area a refreshed appearance in the autumn sunlight. a fantastic start to October, GG Camper Ser vice InCamper Corbin Anno orchestrated

a service project to care for the Geneva Glen property. Corbin and approximately 20 volunteers spanning different age groups arrived equipped with shears, loppers, and saws to tackle overgrowth on South (Girls) Hill and around the Council Ring. Their efforts not only enhanced the appearance and accessibility of these areas but also played a crucial role in maintaining the forest’s health and safety.

Volunteer Opportunities The Pendragon Society

The Pendragons are a group of volunteers at GG who assist with stewardship of camp facilities and property. The group provides service in helping to keep camp maintained and is a significant source of labor that would otherwise need to be hired.
