The Glen Breeze

Fall 2022 & 100th Anniversary Celebration

Dear Camp Family,

With high anticipation, we bring you the Fall Breeze and summarize a truly remarkable year for Geneva Glen! We knew that our centennial summer would be significant, that there would be joys and triumphs, revelry and reunion; still, we could not have fully understood the sheer volume of the magic we would experience with the Camp Family.

The 2022 Summer and the appropriate theme, "Celebration," can be recapitulated by an overflowing enrollment of exemplary campers and an exceptional, selfless seasonal staff. Camp returned to normal in most ways; we reunited at Check ins, gathered as a whole in the Council Ring, sang, and cherished our old traditions in innovative ways. We found inspiration in the kiddos' joyful exuberance as they delved into every activity with trust and silliness. We were bustin' at the seams with creative programming! With examples like talent shows, Shark Tank, Gold Rush, Capture the Flag, the Bob Ross Painting Clinic, Jurassic Park, and "Sustainability Smackdown" (see the Property update) we saw our campers develop their unique "Magic of the Glen" experience. As a camp, we persevered through challenges like Covid, applauded successes and shined a light on each other's accomplishments, and made real the notion of imagining an unforgettable summer.

Following the summer and a thorough camp cleaning by our amazing post camp crew, we rolled into the collection of 100th Anniversary celebration events. Our 100th Anniversary is best described through the sounds of laughter, songs, stories, enthusiastic shouts, and tears of joy. We draw particular attention to our Sunday Vespers Service during Family Camp, where we revisited our themes of Connection, Legacy, Preservation, and Inclusion. There were beautiful stories, singing, poems, and quotes, including Lisa Dontzin's poignant account of her experience in New York on September 11th, 2001, and visualizing herself at Geneva Glen while getting herself to safety. Then we recounted Iris Gilmore's words following the Lodge Fire in 1973, "the good that this camp has done through the years was the pride, character, goodness, and the fellowship that passed through those doors... that cannot be destroyed." Whether the Golf Tournament, Decade Reunions, Family Camp, the 100th BBQ, or the Meadow Time Soiree, one thing was apparent... As described by Lady Iris, Geneva Glen is made up of extraordinary people. This is the reason that Geneva Glen is 100 years old, why we are fully enrolled year after year, and why we are such a strong organization. We frequently receive the question, "who owns the camp?" Our 100th Anniversary reminded us of the answer: we ALL have a piece of "ownership." It's ours, it's yours, and it's our children's. Our Centennial celebration was magnificent; however, it's not all about the past. Now we set our eyes on the future. There are another 100 years to plan for and another 100 years of memories to make. Our vision moving forward is simple: ensure that the Magic of the Glen perseveres for the next 100 years for our campers. We must continue cultivating our leaders, volunteers, and donors willing to sacrifice to create the magic. We need new and upgraded facilities to meet our future and existing needs. We must protect our land, forests, trails, and campsites. We must continue recruiting high caliber staff and counselors from diverse backgrounds trained in 21st Century youth development skills. Finally, we must maintain and grow our campership and tuition assistance program to reduce barriers so that more and more people can experience the Magic of the Glen and make their own memories here. Everyone needs an opportunity to experience this place! Ultimately, our future will reflect our past: it will be a place where kids and young adults have the emotional safety and support to be their best selves.

As we proudly and gratefully assume the Director role, we are brimming with hope for the future of Geneva Glen and our campers. Our conviction is resolute that camp is more important than ever, and we remain dedicated to preserving the ideal that "Geneva, our lives have been bettered by you."

With Strength to Lead and Faith to Follow, Christa & Reid

Good to see ya, Campers! Camp Dogs, Gus and Maisie here, ready to update you on the sights and smells around GG. We're missing you and all the exciting and fun things we did together this past summer. We had what the humans call a "normal" year up here at Geneva Glen! It started by welcoming all our staff friends back to camp after a long winter away. Speaking of winter, we even got one last snowfall on June 1st during Orientation, believe it or not! The Staff was quite cold, but we loved playing in the extra snow before the campers arrived.

The summer kicked off with our second ever Seedlings and Stardust, bringing many new camper friends to play with. We loved all the scratches and extra food they would sneak us when Christa and Reid weren't looking! Maisie spent more time at the barn as the summer moved on and learned to love those silly horses. Like many campers, she found out they are lots of fun and not as big and scary as they seem. Gus was excited that she finally found out what all the hype was about!

The barn is neat and smells terrific to us dogs, but nothing will beat helping with “Christa Snacks” and seeing all the fun activities the campers were doing. Some of the favorites were making it to the top of the Climb Wall, yelling "Oh Mama!" on the giant swing, getting to climb Upper Elements, Zip Lining, going on trail rides, hiking to the Shrine, playing G Smash, and going to Rifles and BB's. Of course, we can't forget about the camp Hobbit, Umlaut, and how he created lots of magic and helped the campers experience magicology! We were SO excited to finally play Capture the Flag

On-The-Dog-Beat Trainee Program

and Jurassic Park again after a few years on hiatus! Running around with the campers and helping them find the flag was the best. One of our favorite parts about this summer having everyone back singing together in the Council Ring. Gus would curiously run through when Reid was leading an old favorite like “I Found a Horseshoe.” Another highlight was the 4th of July celebration when the Indian Hills parade came through camp. We got to chase the fire trucks and steal the candy they were throwing out to the campers!

Speaking of celebrations… can you believe that Geneva Glen has been around for 100 years? That's 700 in dog years! We are so lucky to be at a place that has been here for so long, and we loved reconnecting and celebrating with old friends at Family Camp and the Anniversary BBQ... the food was scrumptious that day!

We've also got lots of big news this Fall! First, we heard from the Staff that the terrible smells of the old Boys Hill Cinderblock will be going away this winter to make room for brand new bathrooms! We also heard them talking about improving the food next summer... Gus isn't picky and eats about anything, but it sounds like there will be some new delicious grub when you return. Next, we're happy to share that we'll be the K9 reporters for a while because our humans, Christa and Reid, will be the permanent Directors at GG! We're happy for them and know that they'll do their best to keep camp safe and fun for you all. Finally, our favorite news is that "Noisy" Pete, the Property Manager, brought us a new puppy pal, Juniper! We're excited to play with her and have another camp dog joining our pack. We can't wait for you campers to meet her next summer!

Well, campers, I think that’s all from us... it was the best summer two dogs can have! Thanks for being our friends, and we can't wait to see you all again soon!

Table scraps and belly rubs, Gus & Maisie

A Trainee is a camper selected for a leadership role all summer. We generally choose between 8 10 campers to participate in this program. They are able to enjoy the fun of being a camper with some of the responsibilities of being a staff member at GG. There is a high expectation of the camper's leadership abilities and loyalties to the values they've learned through our teen programs. At Geneva Glen, a camper who will be 16 and entering 11th grade in the summer may apply for Trainee. Keep in mind that it is a full summer commitment which will be June 11 through August 12, 2023. Applications and program information will be available online by November 1. Applications are due by January 1, 2023.

NOTE: Please remember you should apply, not your parent!

2022 Summer Recap

Our 2022 Summer theme was "Celebration," for a good reason! Finally, we could return to regular camp activities, assembling together as a whole camp and seeing our camper families in the Meadow for Check in and Check out, to name a few. It felt wonderful to find ourselves in our old habits of going to the Council Ring to sing after lunch, playing Jurassic Park, gathering in the Chapel for Camp Family Fellowship, and having all camp dances together. We celebrated Geneva Glen's hills being filled with laughter once again and were immensely grateful for our Camp Family helping us celebrate our 100 years of camping excellence!

Seedlings & Stardust

The summer kicked off with the second ever Seedlings and Stardust. It was magical to show our youngest campers all that GG is about and give them a small taste of camp! Our favorite part of Seedlings was introducing the campers to the many magical creatures, like gnomes and fairies, that live at Geneva Glen and building unique homes for them that the campers would take home. We had magical staff characters, including Gnessa and Gnorbit, our head Gnomes, the Wizard King, Queen of the Elves, the Caveman, Zienna, our Fairy Queen, Sparkles the Unicorn, and so many more! Next, we delivered the signature GG Circus with acts from our talented campers and staff and ended the session with a rip roarin' carnival. Our Seedlings campers proved that even just 3 days is enough to experience the Magic of the Glen!

Myths & Magic

Our Myths campers arrived curious and ready to experience GG! We started our week with an enchanted Council Fire and some knee slappin' hilarious skits and songs. Next, we had our very first "Advengures" Dinner (Adventure + Avengers), where campers partnered with an Avengers character and had to complete a task to be able to win our tournament. Thanks go to our incredibly creative seasonal staff for designing this new adventure! We also had our traditional overnight under the stars in the Meadow following Long John Silver's treasure hunt. The session culminated with the epic Dirty Derby, with the campers rolling through the mud and sand, sliding through Jell O, and painting their counselors. Mud Pie King Gael Suarez and Mud Pie Queen Quinley Onsager were crowned this summer's dirtiest.

American Heritage

Our American Heritage campers were welcomed by a rowdy rendition of "Rawhide" sung by the GG staff as we were all transported back to the Old West! Once again, the cabins and

dorms were organized into "Family Groups" (from youngest to oldest): Tommy Knockers, Buckaroos, Prospectors, Plains Tribes, Pioneers, Scouts, Mountaineers, Revolutionaries, and Mountain Tribes. The final two days of the session were celebrated with The Wild West Show and Rendezvous. Each Family Group brought something to be shared with the camp, including dances, games, and snacks. The Rendezvous closed in the Council Ring as we recognized the American Heritage award winners and the following campers who completed their American Heritage tracks: Headliner Level 1: Kate Todd, Leah Rudmann, Abby Sampson, Josie Storfa, Alex Vasquez, and Sydney Hook. Headliner Level 2: Morgan Estes and Adele Tversky. Headliner Level 3: Greer Ransweiler. Buck Skinner Level 1: Peter Solan and Guy De Verges. Naturalist Level 1: Morgan Estes. Trail Blazer Level 1: Khloè Kustok and Leah Rudmann. Trail Blazer Level 3: Ashley Acton. Range Rider Level 1: Morgan Estes, Logan Genova, Dillon Jones, Gabby Butera, Ella Julian, Teagan Kessler, and Chris Mackintosh. Range Rider Level 2: Teddy Rauchway Range Rider Level 3: Eliza Lennox

The Spirit of American Heritage award was presented as the final act of the evening. Each Family Group nominated one camper to be considered for this award: Daphne Duncan of the Tommy Knockers, Gareth Dodson of the Buckaroos, Lara Black of the Prospectors, Caroline Keefe of the Plains Tribes, Khloè Kustok of the Pioneers, Peter Solan of the Scouts, Niall McDermott of the Mountaineers, and Ezry Bonomo of the Revolutionaries, and Morgan Estes of Mountain Tribes. In addition, our phenomenal staff had six nominees: Cole Alsup, Samantha Bryson, Aubrey Crawford, Sophia Mix, Phoebe Fanganello, and Colin Yakely. Morgan Estes was selected as the camper recipient, and Head Wrangler Samantha Bryson was selected for staff.

Knighthood

The Jolly Band brought forth the Orders of the Glen as we kicked off another fantastic summer of Knighthood! Nancy returned with Ken to set the stage, retelling "Sir Roland and the Knights of the Silver Shield" to a packed Council Ring. The stories of Merlin, Arthur, and their counterparts continued throughout Knighthood, told by our

staff. It felt right at home to have all our campers back singing "Witchcraft," "Rose," and "Follow the Gleam," filling the camp with song and spirit. Alums John Vogt and Tim Hogan reprised their roles as special guest speakers for our Sunday Vespers services. John dug deep into Knighthood stories from The Mabinogion (say that ten times fast!), exploring facets of fidelity and loyalty. Tim inspired the camp with the Grail story and Camelot's quest for self betterment. Merlin's Masque was highlighted with performances by Nora Fink Johnson (Merlin, the Child), Madi Easdon (Merlin, the Boy), and Nora Rowe (Merlin, the Enchanter). The dancers showed off their grace and strength, capped off by a stunning performance of the classic Lady of the Lake by Tatiana Robinson Pulling of the Sword was as enchanting as ever, with Brannum Cyphers raising the sword from the stone and handing the rose to Ava Gonzalez as they became Geneva Glen's 83rd King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. Their court included Cadence Gamba, Emily O'Donnell, Mia Lanpher, Lauryn Long, Parker Lucas, Leah Rudmann, Abby Sampson, Louise Stewart, Kate Todd, Hattie Westnedge, Logan Ambroggio, Hayes Dodson, Hayes Dwyer, Logan Genova, Ozzy Held, Will Kiley, Carson Lerner, Jacob McKinney, Tristan Robinson, and Fyn Walker. There was much to celebrate at the end of both sessions as Sam Allison, Logan Ambroggio, Jake Ammann, Andrew Atkinson, Tate De Roos, Hayes Dodson, Miles Hanzel, Oscar Held, Lucien Muck, Bo Ooms, Jackson Rork, Ben Silver, and Luke Taylor attained the rank of Sir Knight as campers. Noah Coronado, Hudson Elkjer, Matt Elliott, Davis Hummel, Rob Jacoby, Cooper Lees, Quinn Sweeney, Michael Tidd, Reed McElhinney, Sam Wenig, and Matthew Werner attained the rank of Sir Knight as staff. Seamus Cassidy, Caden Cramer, Luc Filion, Ben Fitzpatrick, Noah "Chewy" LeBlanc, Gabe Markwiese, Ryan Porter, Connor Triplett, and Colin Yakely were awarded Silver Spurs. Izzi Bryson, Aubrey Crawford, Phoebe Fanganello,

Nelle Kanewske, Amanda Lisle, Aspen Reeves, Grace Romero, and Natalie Wadhwa received Roses. Cole Alsup, Ozzie Froelich, Ryan Kauffman, and Tanner Thomas were recognized as Gold Stars. Samantha Bryson, Mckenna Nading, and Annie Rudnick joined the venerable ranks of the Ladies of the Bracelet. The coveted Lady Iris award went to Kate Todd. The abundance of recognition was a true mark of the quality of the 2022 staff and campers!

World Friendship

Our staff sang "Joy to the World" to kick off our final session of the 2022 season! The Olympic Theme was prominent from the start, as each cabin and dorm "country" competed for medals and points throughout the session. Campers and counselors of all ages took part in the classic Musical Revue for the penultimate evening, a GG version of songs and dances from various musicals! It was a superb production led by Grace Romero, Nelle Kanewske, and Alex Lewis As World Friendship ended, we spent our final day celebrating Chautauqua, back to normal, with eclectic food, songs, and performances! It was phenomenally led by Aubrey Crawford, our Special Programs Director! Daphne Mentor and Drew Finley were recognized with Geneva Glen's Sportsmanship Award. Peace Prize nominees included elite GG Campers: Cara Babbs, Gabi Bustamante, Macie Haas, Eli Lipsius, Rowan Neilio, Damion Powell, Tristan Robinson, Nora Rowe, and Avery Siegler. The Peace Prize went to John Bird and Sydney Tatar.

We were thankful for all our returning campers and counselors and even more grateful to welcome in all the new members of the GG Camp Family in our 100th exceptionally memorable summer! The Spirt of the Glen is thriving and seeded into the future, to be celebrated for the next 100 years.

Thank you to our Midnight Blue Bracelets!

The Midnight Blue Bracelets (Knighthood campers for 8+ years). Worked with Amanda Lisle, Head of Bracelets, to create a project that will be a part of our ceremony for years to come. We are grateful for their commitment, leadership, and love for our program. Thank you to all these dedicated Midnight Blue campers: Nora Rowe, Ava Gonzalez, Emma Kaplan, Katie Smits, Josie Pass, Charlotte Johnson, Leah Rudmann, Reese Steinberg, Sophia Johnson, Harper Hodgson, Grace Thamert, Abby Sampson, Kate Todd, Lauryn Long, Mia Lanpher, Anya Mangle, Addison Chandler, Bird Cassidy, Emily O'Donnell, Emma Middleton, Hattie Westnedge, and Reese Dugdale.

2022 Summer Recap

Geneva Glen’s 100th Anniversary

What a magnificent event! As November rolls in, we are still in awe and smiling at the memories from our 100th Anniversary. After seven different events and more than 700 attendees, our historic celebration proved that Geneva Glen is a place like none other. Words cannot express the sentiment and affectionate camaraderie of our gatherings. Whether sheer joy, tears, laughter, or singing, our hearts and spirit were lifted by the Spirit of the Glen. That spirit always has been and will continue to be our people. So enjoy the photos and the celebration of our cherished camp. GG welcomed over 160 guests for a beautiful evening, catered dinner, and fundraiser supporting the Fellowship Fund, which helps with camperships, infrastructure, and other high impact projects. Board President Ford Allison kicked the evening off, introducing our phenomenal master of ceremonies, Joe Baumgardner. After speeches from Christa & Reid, games, a live auction, and Joe's heart tugging GG story, we saw an outpouring of support from the Camp Family, contributing $39,450 during the paddle raiser.

The support of our Camp Family will continue to prepare an increasingly diverse group of today's youth to become tomorrow's leaders through a positive and transformative camp experience as we cherish the past, nurture the present, and seed the future. 2022 Staff College Graduates!

 Zach Triplett (Head of Shields) graduated with a BS in Accounting from the University of Colorado, Denver.

Stu Cornell: Ken & Nancy left their thoughts about the passing of this very unique leader, Stu Cornell. “We hold to the Robert Louis Stevenson advice: ‘like birds signing in the rain let grateful memories survive in times of sorrow.’ Stewart enriched everyone and things he touched at the Glen from Stu’s Corner that because Bear’s Corner, to the Council Ring bridge, to the first Quest for senior boys decades ago. Thank you Stu how could you ever be forgotten.”

Gordon Schadt We are sad to hear of the passing of Gordon Schadt. One our legendary Head Wranglers, he also was a Head of Pool and caretaker for a couple of years at Geneva Glen. It was said his biggest achievement was raising his beloved family (seen here with son Kevin, daughter in law Amy, and granddaughters Sutton and Emma). "Those who knew Gordon will remember his kindness, his unwavering support and gentle demeanor. His undeniable presence drew people in and he maintained relationships with all of those people." You'll be missed.

Around the Property

The Crew worked hard this summer to improve defensible space conditions around our buildings in central camp. We’ve been focusing on removing ladder fuels, clearing bushes and thinning the understory, replacing mulch beds with rock, and clearing the space around buildings. This summer, we had several fire mitigation event days for campers and completed some thinning at the Shrine campsite and along the access road. In February 2022, approximately 50 trees were removed around buildings and along roadways to help meet the goals of the upcoming Indian Hills Community Wildfire Protection Plan. We plan to remove another 50 trees this winter and continue defensible space and mitigation efforts during the 2023 season.

The Boys Hill bathroom project is moving forward. Plans are complete, and we’re finalizing site plans, permitting, and securing bids.

Chapel entryway renovations have continued, and the lower stair case received a new railing. Cabins 9, 11, and the CTU received siding and trim upgrades and a fresh coat of paint. Following the latest roofing installation on the Boys Hill dorms, the gutters were equipped with new gutter guards to help with maintenance and be more fire resistant. The Girls Hill / Sawmill road received some drainage upgrades and resurfacing to help address runoff & erosion issues.

2022 saw the development of new sustainability programming, initiated by goals from the Stewardship Committee’s 10 year Sustainability Plan. With help from sustainability intern Ryan “Caveman” Kauffmann, camp educated campers about noxious weed species prevalent at Geneva Glen. Campers participated in a weed pulling competition (the Sustainability Smackdown) to help reduce the weed population at camp. We estimate campers and staff pulled over 10,000 weeds throughout the summer. Thanks to all who participated in helping to care for our forests! In 2022, despite cost increases and labor issues, we continued treatment of the area around Marshmallow Meadow. This year 55 acres of standard weed treatment and 11.2 acres of cheatgrass treatment were targeted.

After delays during 2020 and a lack of contractor availability this summer, the GG3 project is still in the works. Working to keep costs down while still achieving the scope of work we initially planned has proved challenging. We are in the process of applying for an additional grant to help reduce the cost. Some recent estimates we have collected have come up significantly to $4,000 5,000/acre. As GG3 planning progresses, we are also starting conversations about future project areas to ensure more sustained progress in these efforts. Coordinating with local fire, land management agencies and considering the upcoming Indian Hills Community Wildfire Protection Plan has been a priority in the planning and development process. We are pleased with the regrowth in the previously treated areas and how the forest responded. (Below GG1 Treatment area Pre treatment, post treatment, 3 years regrowth)

Give a hearty welcome to this adorable Haflinger pony that joined the herd this past summer. Soleil was originally owned by the family of Head Wrangler Sam Bryson before going to a new family. After years and years, Soleil found his way back into the Camp Family!

If you know of any horses that would be good for camp, please contact reid@genevaglen.org!

Welcome to the Herd; Soleil
