Have you ever had a concussion? Studies show that out of two hundred-two brains ninety percent are diagnosed with CTE. At Boston University they had detected evidence of CTE in one hundred-ten donated brains from former NFL players. Bennet Ifeakandu Omalu is a Nigerian-American physician forensic pathologist and neuropathologist who was the first to discover and publish the finding of a CTE in an American football player. CTE is a Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, but as you might have heard it as a concussion. You can easily get a concussion by just hitting your head on a wall or walking into a door. A CTE can cause memory loss, confusion, impulse control, depression, and many more issues. The past few years the NFL concussion protocol has not been effective. They quickly check the players when in contact with another player and then sends them back into the game. Player Tom Savage is one of many who have returned to the game after a severe head injury. The players must be cleared through the five steps in order to go

back in the game. Concussion protocol must have 24 hours between each step before progressing in to the next step. The first step is rest and recovery, the player must stretch and work on their balance. Second step is light aerobic exercise, with supervision the player starts cardiovascular exercises as in riding the stationary bike or walking on the treadmill. Next they will continue the aerobic exercises and start to introduce strength training. The fourth step is football-specific work, the player adds non-contact football drills as in catching and throwing the football. Last they can do full football activity, which means they are cleared and can go back to practicing with the team. In conclusion NFL concussions are a very big deal, At Boston university they discovered that over 41 football players have died of CTE. We should take more consideration in to making the protocol more effective so we won't have to lose anymore players then what we already have.
