2010 Bringing Experience Corps to Greater Boston

annual report

Getting Things Done Dear Friends, Coaxed…Imagine coming across this word as a nine year old boy who struggles with reading and whose native language is not English. Coaxed is not an easy word. Paulo was stuck on it. “How to Eat Fried Worms” (T. Rockwell) was one of the few books that Paulo’s tutor, Ms. Edna, could convince him to read. She saw it at a yard sale and thought the title would interest him. So she brought the book to the Emerson School, where she serves as an Experience Corps member. “Afterwards, he coaxed the dogs into the house,” the book read. Paulo came to the word and stopped. He could not pronounce it and he had no idea what it meant. Ms. Edna said the word out loud, defined it, pronounced it again, and asked him to repeat it. Then she asked him to start at the beginning of the sentence. He began reading aloud, following the words with his finger. Again, he slowed at “coaxed,” struggling with it. “Remember, it’s only one syllable,’’ gently reminded Ms. Edna, as she repeated the word for him, with great emphasis on the word’s ending. He was successful this time. What a smile on his face when Ms. Edna gave him a high-five! When the reading session ended, Ms. Edna asked Paulo to use the word in another sentence, one of his own making. After a few seconds he looked up to her with a grin, “You coaxed me to read this book!” Later, we asked Ms. Edna, a retired insurance worker, why she serves as an Experience Corps member for eight hours each week. “This is the most meaningful work I have ever done,” she replied. At that moment, she was writing proudly in Paulo’s folder that he had mastered the word “coaxed”. We have thousands of stories like this. The individual attention that kids need and crave can be the most important literacy tool available. Our Experience Corps members are making important contributions to schools and afterschool programs throughout Boston and Revere. Day after day, one child at a time. We would like to thank all of our donors, volunteers, supporters, and partners who believe in us and make our work possible.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express a sincere note of gratitude and appreciation for the fine work of the Experience Corps volunteers. They provide quality reading and literacy intervention for many of our at-risk students and also represent a very nice opportunity for our younger students to connect with members of the ‘greatest generation!’ I do hope that this program continues next year and well beyond.” Mr. Salvatore Cammarata, Principal Garfield Community Magnet School

A Year of Service in Honor of Ted Kennedy Nearly a year ago, we watched with thousands of others as the funeral procession for Senator Ted Kennedy passed in front of the State House. The sense of loss and sadness was palpable. The Kennedy family’s commitment to service over the past 50 years is a legacy unmatched by anyone. Ted was a huge proponent of national service, and one of his final acts was to author a bill that will greatly increase the size of the AmeriCorps Program, a bill that carries his name, and was signed by the President in April 2009. Like his brothers before him, Ted believed in the idealism of America. And when he died we decided to dedicate this year of service to him. Over 300 Experience Corps members along with 25 AmeriCorps members completed 102,371 hours of service, working with hundreds of children who need help with reading, writing and other literacy skills. The impact has been huge. We will be forever grateful for Ted Kennedy and his influence on national service.

2010 Honors & Highlights: • 51% more progress made by participating students than their peers. • Piloted a healthy aging initiative for our Experience Corps Members. • Named 2010 Social Innovator in Healthy Aging (Root Cause and the Social Innovation Forum).

In 2010 we were honored several times for our innovative approach to addressing the needs of older adults and school children. The Social Innovation Forum (a program of Root Cause) and TEDxBoston recognized our Experience Corps Program as innovative and highly effective. Our inspiration is pulled from the past. Until 100 years ago, intergenerational living was part of our culture. Grandparents lived in the same house or across the street from their children and grandchildren. These two generations fed each other’s needs and contributed to each other’s well being. But the arrival of automobiles and airplanes, changes in workplace culture, and the establishment of elder care facilities changed everything. It’s time to reintegrate older adults into the fabric of our community. By 2030, one in three persons in America will be over the age of 55. It’s an unprecedented time. We have a huge population of seniors and it will present some challenges because of its size. But we are also the best educated generation that has ever lived. We are healthier and will live longer than our predecessors. Retirement could be a 30 year passage. At the same time, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, 67% of America’s fourth grade students are reading below grade level. These reading scores, if not improved, will have a direct link to school failure and high school drop out. This is not only a huge moral issue, it will affect national defense, our place in competitive world markets, and the socio-economic make-up of our communities. Generations Incorporated is changing this by training older adults as literacy tutors in a proven program that gets results. Reading scores are improving and older adults are healthier because of their involvement. Meaningful relationships are being fostered between old and young and our community is becoming intergenerational once again. Just like the old days! Innovative? Indeed.

2009-2010 AmeriCorps State & *VISTA Members We would like to thank the AmeriCorps State & *VISTA Members who completed a year of service with Generations Incorporated.
