A new way to play

In 2006 Nintendo first launched the original Wii console. Gem’s newest Business Manager talks to Future Neil, you’ve recently joined Gem following a long and successful career with Trust, what do you think so far? I’m really enjoying my time at Gem. The whole team have made me feel extremely welcome and I’m enjoying working with such a wide range of different vendors whereas before I was focused on just one. Heading into peak season has meant that hitting the ground running is essential and everyone around the office has helped so that I’m up to speed as quickly as possible. As a Business Manager you’re the link between sales, purchasing and marketing and responsible for driving the business - what’s your biggest challenge? It is a unique role that many distributors don’t offer and the biggest challenge has to be managing vendors expectations during this busy period. It’s a nice challenge to have though as we are finding so many top games titles and new products being released which are in such high demand. With all the plates we have to spin it’s crucial that none are dropped.

intendo's new console the Wii U goes on sale this month, and is set to change the way we play games.

The centrepiece of Nintendo's next gaming revolution is its innovative new controller, the Wii U Game Pad. Unique among home gaming systems, the new controller skilfully combines the standard functionality of a typical controller, with the modern touch and tilt tactility similar to a tablet device. The result is a unique controller with a built-in 6.2 inch touchscreen that does everything, and allows players to interact with games in entirely new ways.


Other games, like New Super Mario Bros. U and Just Dance 4, allow players to continue playing the game on the Wii U's new controller if, say, someone wants to watch TV. Luigi's Ghost Mansion, for example, showcases the Wii U's unique qualities perfectly. The game pits four players in a maze on the hunt for a ghost - but they can only see it by shining their torches on it. Meanwhile the player using the new controller plays as the ghost, on a mission to creep up behind players and scare them witless.

Technically speaking, the Wii U has a number of things going for it. For a starters, it's the ďŹ rst Nintendo console to embrace high deďŹ nition, meaning that all those iconic brands will be seen in breathtaking, pin-sharp clarity for the ďŹ rst time. Designed for all the family, excitement awaits on every straight, hairpin, jump and loop-the-loop as players collect and deploy power-ups in their quest for the chequered flag.

Developed at Codemasters' Birmingham studio, F1 Racing Stars also includes a ton of multiplayer fun, with not only four-player local split-screen, but 12-player online as well as players compete wheel to wheel for F1 glory.


Promising high-octane kart racing fun for all ages, F1 Racing Stars lets players experience the wheel-spinning thrills of the Championship Career mode, where they can take on all the iconic stars of Formula One, in wacky recreations of all the glamourous circuits across the globe.

Due for release in the weeks leading up to the all-important Christmas selling season, F1 Race Stars looks set to be a contender for one of the family games this year.

We’re really excited to bring the whole cast of Formula One into a fun new world of racing. We’ve really let our Art and Design teams off the leash to bring F1 stars’ personalities alive in a new way and create a game where racing fans of all ages can jump into all-action solo, split-screen and online multiplayer races. It’s the game we’ve wanted to create for a long time and, building on our strong relationship with Formula One Management Limited, we’re now able to bring Codemasters’ long-standing expertise in track design and AI to create a Formula One racing experience quite unlike any other.

Starring cartoon recreations of F1 icons such as Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, this Mario Kart inspired affair is anything but serious. All of F1's famous and familiar tracks are included, and all have been redesigned in a variety of outlandish ways. For example, Spa's Eau Rouge features a loop-the-loop section, while players can leap at high speed across
