Philosophy.

METALOG®training tools...

• ... stimulate learning processes for ALL of the SENSES. In this way, you experience with hand and heart not only the theory of the psychology of communication but also management techniques and team concepts. • ... act as LEARNING AMPLIFIERS. Dry and “top-heavy” theories are made visible and tangible, and illustrated in an unprecedented memorable way, increasing the long-term retention of what is experienced.

4

• ... gets you working with METAPHORS. A second ‘reality’, parallel to the apparent group reality, becomes established, containing aspects of fun and the joy of experimentation. But beyond this, however, the surroundings allow the delegates to bring their own authentic behaviour into the open, a behaviour that they show in their daily life in “their” social system. • ... are tools for REAL WORLD TRANSFER. Experiences are made during the learning projects that delegates can easily transfer to their everyday life.

Metalog® training tools OHG, Sägmühlstr. 25a, 82140 Olching, Tel.: +49 (0)8142 418 37 10, Fax +49 (0)8142 418 37 11, e-mail: trainingtools@metalog.de, web: www.metalog.de

• ... means SYSTEMIC INTERVENTION. You implicitly and consistently work with aspects of multiperspectivity, feedback loops, contextuality of meaning as well as self-organisation. • ...create POSITIVE STATES. Along with activating the delegates, they support the group leader, trainer or coach in activating resources, fostering feedback and creating a positive learning environment.

• ... can be used in a wide variety of contexts and with diverse target groups. STAGING of the learning project plays a central role here. Embed your learning projects in such a way that your group can easily visualise the ideas you wish to convey. • ... allow you to exactly match the METALOG® training tool of your choice to your target group: you define rules that for you make sense and set focused appraisal criteria that BRING your delegates FORWARDS.

WortSpiel.

More than just dialogue.

W E N

The Project. “Make as many of the facets of communication tangible!“ That was the goal of our designers when developing this learning scenario. Listening, moderating, adapting to others, developing a common vocabulary, whilst having fun. How It’s Done. The delegates are handed pieces of an octagonal shape. The outer edges of these pieces have a printed symbol on them. Each symbol has a matching counterpart on the outer edge of another piece, all together making up the complete shape. The goal is to put this eight-sided shape together and put it all down at once on the table with the printed side underneath. However, the symbols on each person’s pieces must be kept hidden. The key to solving this task is successful, targeted communication, describing the symbols with the appropriate words so that

6

the matching counterpart can be found. But how exactly can the team describe their own take on reality, their own perspective? In this exciting phase, good self-organisation and moderation are particularly called for. When the correct matching counterparts have been found, the form can be placed down on the table in one complete form. And then the tension really rises... Has the group done a good job? Soon all will be revealed. With the aid of a metal plate, the trainer turns over the complete form and the group gets to see the result of their own ‘communication’. Delegates (min / opt /max): 8 / 16 / 16 Time (w/o debriefing): 20 - 40 minutes. Space requirements: at least 30 m2 and a table of at least 0.8 m x 0.8 m.

Topics and Outcomes. Communication training: sender/receiver issues, active listening, meta-communication, persuasion, and many others. Teamwork: developing a common vocabulary, agreeing on interfaces, feedback process, motivation. Customer orientation: speaking the customer’s vocabulary, needs analysis, seeing the customer’s ‘map’. Systemic thinking and acting: self-organisation. Solving conflicts: dealing with misunderstanding. Moderation training: interim summaries, getting the overview, maintaining discipline in discussions.

Band.

Stretching teams.

The project. There is one outstanding feature of successful teams: the team members can rely on each other. However, for many people it is difficult to let go. The Band enables your delegates to physically feel the support of the team. The perfect combination of physical experience and team learning!

Topics & Outcomes. Enegiser: in the morning, post-lunch. Team Building: RA: coordination, dependencies and interac tions in systems, coherence in teams, respect for others, maintaining the balance; MC: giving feedback, reflecting.

How It’s Done. The Band can be used to support a number of activities; they can be intensely physical or quietly reflective. Roundabout (RA): 6-10 people stand within the stretched Band. Each person supported by the Band. Suddenly, one person changes position by running and letting themselves fall into the material. Then the next person starts. As soon as the group has developed a feeling of stability and rhythm the trainer can increase the pace and dynamics of the movements. Microcosm (MC): In a training session, moments of intense emotion may be encountered. For this, you need a space that is safe and secure. Up to 16 people can stand or sit in The Band. Lean back, feel the team support and discuss your issues.

Band. Contents: 1 lycra cloth, 1 detailed instructions sheet. Dimensions: 30 x 40 x 13 cm. Weight: approx. 4 kg incl. case. Two different length: Standard (blue): 4,50 m for up to 16 participants and XXL (red): 6,00 m for up to 28 participants.

Time (w/o debriefing): Space needed:

RA: 10 - 20 minutes; MC: according to discussion topics. RA: large space free of obstacles; MC: 6 x 6 metres.

Safety Advice: The Band is a fast and dynamic activity, and it is not always easy to keep an overview. So please make sure there are no obstacles in the way of your delegates (especially out of doors, trees, stones, roots etc.). If possible, delegates should wear sturdy shoes. For safety reasons, we advise you not to wear clothes with slippery surfaces (rain coats etc.).

Flottes Rohr - Scoop. So how‘s your team today?

The Project. In daily life, teams are often faced with situations where a solution can only be found if they all literally “pull together”. Use Flottes Rohr - Scoop to vividly illustrate just how important cooperation and facilitation are when it comes to working together as a real team.

Topics & Outcomes. Team building: cooperating, communicating, focusing on goals, facilitating, identifying interdependencies in systems. Self-organization: concentrating, focusing. Energiser: seminar start, post-lunch.

How It’s Done. The group’s task is to lift a ball from the ground using a shovel-like tube, then transport it to a designated spot (such as a bucket) where it is then deposited. All delegates take hold of one (or more, depending on group size) of the ropes attached to the device, forming a circle in the process. They then jointly manoeuvre Flottes Rohr - Scoop towards their goal. There are various tried and trusted versions of this activity that you can use with your group: Remote Control: The group is split into a team of managers and a team of workers. The managers are responsible for coordinating the project but are not allowed to touch the ropes. To master this challenge, they need to develop an effective and transparent communication style as well as be focused on achieving targets. Activation: The exercise is carried out by the entire group, focusing on team issues. Self-Organization: Without explicitly defining a team of managers, the group needs to solve the task by organizing itself efficiently. The challenge here is to identify and assign the various roles needed to get the job done within the team.

Flottes Rohr - Scoop. Contents: 1 shovel tube with 16 robust strings (3mm x 2.5 m, detachable), 2 balls, 1 detailed instructions manual. Dimensions: 21 x 33 x 10 cm. Weight: 700 g

Delegates (min / opt / max): 6 / 14 / 18 Time (w/o debriefing): 15 - 20 minutes Space requirements: 10 x 10 m

Kettenreaktion. The Domino Event.

W E N

The Project. You can almost feel the tension and the enthusiasm when the delegates delicately set out the dominos. With only a limited amount of time available they have to create a domino cascade. Just as in any project, different teams work on sections of the cascade pattern. There are countless challenges to be met and specific requirements to be fulfilled in the process. Will the group manage to place the domino in such a way that at least 75% of them fall over when the cascade is started? How It’s Done. After the starting shot, the group begin to work feverishly. Coordinated by ‘facilitators’, they concentrate on developing solutions for the various construction challenges. Again and again you hear: “Oh no, not again” when someone accidentally knocks over a domino and, in a split second, demolishes a part of the painstakingly constructed domino line. Only the built-in “Emergency Stop” – two of the domino removed from the chain – interrupts the premature chain reaction. Finally everything is ready, the interfaces and crossovers between the various sections are checked. Everything is ready for the release of the chain reaction. At least three quarters of the domino must fall. To achieve this, the teams have to develop a feeling for the correct distance between the domino and, in various test phases, to get to grips with the operational reliability of the twists and turns, crossover points, height differences and other challenges. The ‘facilitators’ ensure a smooth flow of communication between the sub-teams and repeatedly invite the whole group to up their motivation by performing self-developed team rituals. Delegates (min / opt / max): 5 / 15 / 30 Time for 5 – 15 delegates (w/o debriefing): 45 – 60 minutes Space requirements: Seminar room or outdoor setting with at least 25 m2. Optimum is 50 – 100 m2. 10

Topics and Outcomes. Working in teams: jointly developing creative solutions, communication interchange, using team rituals. Project management: making synergy effects tangible, coordination of sub-teams, lines of communication in projects. Organisational development: Working with CIP - Continual Improvement Process, working with limited resources. Leadership training: coordination of sub-teams, management of a larger system. Chain Reaction. Contents of basic set for up to 30 delegates: 750 domino in 5 colours (white, yellow, blue, green, red) and in 5 separate cotton bags, 1 detailed instructions manual. Pfadfinder.

Getting on track.

The Project. “All learning is based on feedback“ - John Sterman, Professor for System Dynamics at MIT. Being able to experience this phenomenon was what moved us to include the learning project Pfadfinder in our range. In this activity, how teams can become learning systems is tangible: the team achieves excellence through developing skills together and through constant feedback on the status quo. How It’s Done. With a budget of ten €1,000 tokens, the group has the task of finding the hidden path across the field. After a short planning period, the group attempts the activity in silence. But there are traps and stumbling blocks along the way. If someone steps on the wrong square, the trainer gives a signal. Such unavoidable errors are not sanctioned. But, if the group repeats the same mistake again, the trainer gives the signal again and the group has to pay €1,000. Through mutual support and joint learning, the group manages to develop a strategy and use up as little money as possible so that, at the end, all delegates can cross the field. The teams need to compensate for the weaknesses of individual members and silently develop a joint approach. Versions: The cloth is also suitable for doing the learning project “Turn-Around”. The entire group stands on the cloth. They are given the task of turning the cloth without getting off it. With strategy and planning, they can rise to this challenge! Delegates (min / opt / max): 6 / 12 / 18 Time (w/o debriefing): 20 - 40 minutes Space requirements: 5 x 6 metres

Topics and Outcomes. Team Development: interacting, feedback, creating a learning system, integration of weaker members, accepting mistakes. Communication Training: awareness of body language, sender/ receiver issues. Leadership Training: recognising needs, cooperating, dealing with stress and complex situations. Organisational Development: prompt feedback as criteria for learning and development. Pfadfinder. KultuRallye.

Rules make life easier - or do they?

The Project. Explicit and implicit rules are an expression of every culture. And it doesn’t matter whether it’s the culture of a country or of a company or of a department in a company: rules regulate how we live with each other. Getting to grips with ‘foreign’ rules is the main issue at the heart of this learning project.

KultuRallye. (Up to 16 delegates). Contents: 8 dice, 320 cash chips, 16 plastic beakers, game instructions for 4 tables, 1 detailed instructions manual. Dimensions: 24 x 33 x 11 cm. Weight: 3 kg. Order no.: 1804. €145.00 plus 19% VAT and shipping

How It’s Done. It begins very simply. On each table, the delegates warm up to the game by practising how to play with specially developed dice and also get to grips with the rules of the game. After a while, they are no longer allowed to speak and the game starts. After a brief period, some of the delegates change tables. But what they don’t know is that each table has different rules how to play the game! Unable to speak, they have to come to terms with the strange situation, i.e., either learn the new rules or ‘import’ their own. This “culture” shock is a real eye-opener. The delegates tangibly experience what it feels like to be in a new environment and what is needed to find your way around. Delegates (min / opt / max): 9 / 12 / 16 (up to 35 with KultuRallye XXL) Time (w/o debriefing): 20 - 25 minutes Space requirements: approx. 60 m2, for 4 tables (or 7 tables for XXL) with enough distance separating them. Topics and Outcomes. Intercultural Communication: dealing with new people, understanding ‘foreign’ cultures, explicit and implicit rules. Team Development: developing common rules (such as when merging two departments or forming a new team), start of the school year, setting rules. Dealing With New Conditions: developing new strategies, orientation in a new situation under difficult circumstances. 14

CultuRally XXL. (Up to 35 delegates). Contents: 14 dice, 700 cash chips, 35 plastic beakers, game instructions for 7 tables, 1 detailed instructions manual. Dimensions: 39 x 33 x 12 cm. Weight 4 kg. Order no.: 1850. €230.00 plus VAT and shipping.

SysTEAMing.

Maintaining the balance.

The project. In any social system, balance is a central theme: between management and employee interests, between forces of creation and conservation, between bright visionary ideas and pressing questions of feasibility. SysTEAMing is a live metaphor for these types of balances. This scenario will fascinate your seminar group from the beginning: wooden figurines must be placed, removed, or rearranged on a freemoving table top, which will topple should it become unbalanced. The various forces at work within systems become visible and tangible. SysTEAMing demonstrates the significance of the explicit use of language and communication as success factors for managers and team members. It helps the team members realize that smooth cooperation and information flow contribute a great deal to harmonious teamwork. With SysTEAMing, your delegates see, hear and feel processes of systemic interdependency. How It’s Done. SysTEAMing is a flexible learning tool. There are a number of variations that have proven successful in practice. Keep in mind, however, that when it comes to staging SysTEAMing, there are no limits to your creativity as trainer or coach. Roles: The delegates are split into teams of 2-3 ‘actors’. 2-3 such teams can work together on one SysTEAMing. There are different roles in each team: one person puts on a blindfold: (S)he is the ‘grabber’, who is allowed to touch and move the figurines on the board. The second - seeing - person is the ‘speaker’ who verbally

directs the grabber’s hand, but without actual physical contact. In a team of three, the third person acts as ‘coach’ for the other two. What’s special is that the extent of this third role is not clearly defined: coaches can decide to intervene, facilitate, analyze, and so on, any way they see fit. No matter which of the versions you choose to try out, it makes sense not to specifically address the question of how the sub-teams are to act towards each other (cooperative or competitive). Instead, you as trainer should carefully observe the teams’ behaviour and use this information for later debriefing. Clearing the table. The figurines are unevenly spread out on the board. The teams’ task is to remove all figurines. The board must remain in balance. Crossover. Divide the board into two fields (halves) using masking tape. Place half the figurines in one field and half in the other. The task is to move all figurines from one field into the other, and vice versa. To vary the difficulty level or adapt SysTEAMing to different group sizes, you can define more than two fields. Delegates (min / opt /max): 4 / 9 / 12 Time (w/o debriefing): 20 - 45 minutes Space requirements: 3 x 3 metres Topics & Outcomes. Team building: communicating between departments, elucidating sender/receiver issues, communicating implicitly and explicitly, resolving misunderstandings, active listening, controlling information flow, establishing balance, establishing trust. Leadership training: assuming responsibility, identifying interdependencies in systems, deciding in uncertain situations, dealing with risk, working with second-hand information. Project management: developing strategies despite lack of information, focusing on goals, working successfully. Intercultural competence: dealing with uncertainty, demonstrating sender/receiver issues, resolving misunderstandings, seeing culture as a balanced value system. SysTEAMing. Contents: 1 movable board (birch with cork base), 1 pedestal (stainless steel / beech), 16 figurines (beech), 3 blindfolds, 1 detailed instructions manual. Dimensions: 75 x 75 x 9 cm. Weight: 7,7 kg

Team2.

More than the sum of its parts.

The project. Perhaps you already know (and love) this group dynamics classic from the 1970s as much as we do. In fact, we like it so much we decided to develop a professional version, throwing in a few improvements along the way. To the original five shapes, we added another five. So now you can not only use Team2 with twice the number of delegates, but also change the difficulty level according to your needs by simply leaving out the more complicated shapes. This task will make any team sweat, because the solution can only be found through effective cooperation and nonverbal communication. The multi-coloured puzzle pieces are cut from plexiglass using laser technology. This process ensures precise size and fit as well as comfortable handling.

Topics & Outcomes. Team building: communicating nonverbally, focusing on goals, subordinating one’s own goals to the group interest, interacting, identifying shortages, assuming responsibility. Self-organization: concentrating, focusing, stamina. Project management: drawing on resources. Team2. Contents: 30 puzzle pieces (plexiglass) for 10 squares, 1 detailed instructions manual. Dimensions: 5 x 16.5 x 16.5 cm. Weight: 700 g incl. Box.

How It’s Done. The group’s task is to put the differently shaped pieces together in such a way that they achieve a number of squares (one per person) of equal size. Talking is not allowed during the activity, and the delegates must follow a certain set of rules for exchanging pieces. To master this challenge, team spirit is the key: while individual squares can be put together in many different ways, there is only one single combination that allows for the completion of all ten at the same time. Therefore, some team members will have to break up their already finished squares to share their pieces with the rest of the group. The message is clear: if a group is to be successful at any task, all members must inevitably subordinate their personal goals (here: to complete their own square) to those of the group as a whole. Delegates (min / opt / max): 5 / 10 / 10 Time (w/o debriefing): 15 - 30 minutes Space requirements: Tabletop of at least 1 x 1.2 metres. 16

Pipeline.

Rolling Communication.

The Project. It often takes a lot of people to get a task done. As an experienced team worker, you will know that it is essential to hand a task over in the proper manner. Pipeline is an exciting learning project full of action for your participants. It is also an excellent metaphor for the communication flow within organisations and transfer processes. How It’s Done. The ball symbolizes a project that the group members have to work together on. The group’s task is now to transport the ball over a certain distance from one point to another. In doing so, the participants are not allowed to touch the ball. The only way to move the ball is to use the Pipeline - a system of halved plastic pipes - according to previously agreed rules. How will they manage to get the project done? For this fast and exciting activity, coordination and cooperation within the group are the keys to success.

Topics & Outcomes. Team building: intercommunication, taking on responsibility, cooperation, dealing with stressful situations, giving feedback, focusing on targets. Babuschka.

Staying on top - together!

The Project. It’s like in real life: things change and we all need to learn to adapt to new situations. We can only do that by - literally - moving closer together. This can be physically experienced with this learning scenario. The group needs new strategies: how can for example “help” and “teamwork” be built differently? Support is truly given with this highly dynamic training tool.

Babuschka. Contents: 4 pedestals (solid beech wood) nested in one another, with carrying handle and anti-slip rubber stoppers, 1 detailed instructions manual. Dimensions: 50 x 50 x 10 cm. Weight: approx. 11 kg.

How it’s done. The goal is for the entire group to stand on a small pedestal for a predetermined amount of time – without touching the ground! To succeed, they need to form a stable “sculpture” that allows the group to find its balance. Once they solve this problem, they’re in for a big surprise: like a Russian doll, the pedestal contains the next smaller pedestal they must balance on, and inside that one there’s another, and another... New strategies must be developed, discarded, and reworked many times throughout the process! Delegates (min / opt / max): 4 / 9 / 14 Time (w/o debriefing): 10 - 15 minutes Space requirements: 4 x 4 m Topics & Outcomes. Team building: mutual support, overcoming fear of physical proximity, working together, building trust. Energiser: in the morning, post-lunch. Dealing with changing conditions: developing new strategies, achieving the impossible, building motivation.

Tower of Power.

For teams who set their sights a little higher.

The Project. We know that great teams make great things happen. But the constant challenge of meeting or even exceeding objectives is very demanding for everyone involved. “How should we treat each other?”, “What’s important for each of us in team work?”, “Who’s taking the lead?”: These are just a few questions amongst many that need answering. The answers are the keys to producing effective and synergetic teamwork.

Tower of Power. Contents: 1 crane (beech / stainless steel) with 24 robust strings (2 m x 3 mm, braided 8 times), 8 blocks cut from solid beech wood, 1 detailed instructions manual. Dimensions: 34 x 46 x 16 cm. Weight: 7.0 kg incl. case. Tower of Power XXL. Up to 34 delegates. Contents:1 crane (beech / stainless steel) with 34 robust strings (2 m x 3 mm, braided 8 times), 8 blocks cut from solid beech wood, 1 detailed instructions manual. Dimensions: 34 x 46 x 16 cm. Weight: 7.5 kg incl. case.

How It’s Done. The trainer places 8 wooden blocks upright on the floor. Each team member picks up one of the ropes that are connected to a crane. The task is to use the crane to build a tower by placing the blocks on top of each other. The participants are not allowed to touch the blocks with their hands or any other part of their bodies. The task appears simple but with each block cut at a different angle and the need for all participants to work together, building the tower starts to get tricky! This task can only be solved by precise planning, good communication, along with well organized teamwork. Topics & Outcomes. Leadership training: identifying interdependencies in systems, dealing with risk, giving feedback. Team building: communicating effectively, cooperating, being an active listener, maintaining the balance. Project management: simulating strategic planning, working under time pressure. Delegates (min / opt / max): 6 / 12 / 24 Time (w/o debriefing): 10 - 45 minutes Space requirements: 8 x 8 metres

Zauberstab - Magic stick.

When one hand doesn‘t know what the other‘s doing.

The Project. Inspired by the well-known classic Magic Bamboo, we created a new version of this coordination challenge that finally meets any professional trainer’s demands. Whereas the original 7-foot long bamboo version was difficult to transport (and one of the reasons why trainers drove estate cars), our four-part aluminium Zauberstab - Magic Stick makes a handy piece of luggage, popular even with airlines: “Oh, you’re going camping! But where’s the rest of your tent?” Due to its variable length, it easily adapts to group sizes from 6 up to 22 delegates. Definitely a must-have for your next workshop! How It’s Done. The participants form two lines, facing each other. The trainer places the Zauberstab - Magic Stick on their extended index fingers, gently but not overtly pushing it downwards. The group’s task is to lower the stick to the ground. The only rule to observe is to never lose contact between their fingers and the stick. But, at the count of three, as the trainer releases her/his hold, the stick begins moving up instead of down, as if full of helium! The reason: In trying to maintain contact with this extremely lightweight stick (thanks to a special aluminium alloy, it weighs only 200 grams at 4 metres length), each delegate pushes upwards just ever so slightly. All others follow this motion, effectively raising the stick instead of lowering it. Detailed planning, concentration, self-organization and leadership are the keys to mastering this task. Delegates (min / opt / max): 6 / 12 / 22 Time (w/o debriefing): 5 - 15 minutes Space requirements: 8 x 5 m if full length is used 20

Topics and Outcomes. Team building: communicating, focusing on goals, interacting, facilitating. Leadership training: assuming leadership positions, expressing oneself effectively. Self-organization: concentrating, focusing, drawing on resources. Energiser: in the morning, post-lunch.

Complexity.

Manage complexity.

The Project. This group challenge was specifically designed for leadership training and team workshops. In the real world, managers are often faced with making decisions based on precious little information. Despite this lack of information, they need to set up and coordinate teams whose task it is to successfully complete the job. Complexity helps you visualize this process, making it literally tangible for your seminar delegates. It allows you to demonstrate the effects of different leadership styles on group efficiency as well as the forces of self-organization in teamwork. Providing surprising insights into interdependencies in teams, this is an exciting task for any group.

Topics and Outcomes. Leadership training: identifying interdependencies in systems, dealing with insufficient information, communication between management and work group, giving feedback. Team building: self-organisation, coordinating with management, time management, quality management, giving feedback. Complexity. Contents: 30 plastic cards (plexiglass, 8x8 cm, 8 mm thick) with numbers printed in red, 1 stopwatch, 15 metres of rope, 1 detailed instructions manual. Dimensions 34 x 25 x 12 cm. Weight 4.5 kg incl. case.

How It’s Done. Divide your group into a smaller group of ‘managers’ and a larger work group. You may also want to name 2 or 3 observers who will not take part in the action but can provide valuable input during debriefing. Management goes to a separate room from where they cannot see the action that will follow. After you have verbally introduced the task, their job is to give the work group a briefing on what to do - without seeing the actual site of activity. The work group gets a number of attempts to accomplish their task. In between rounds, they report back to management and give him/her an update on their progress. This leads to a steady exchange of information. Management is under pressure to provide the group with the best possible leadership in less than optimal conditions. Delegates (min / opt / max): 10 / 15 / 20 Time (w/o debriefing): 30 - 45 minutes Space requirements: 10 x 15 m

Teambalken. In the balance.

How It’s Done. Ask the group to stand on the beam in alphabetical order according to the first letters of their last names. All should be facing in the same direction, with their shoulders touching. Then, give them their task: to rearrange themselves on the beam according to their first names – without, of course, touching the ground. Any breach of this rule is sanctioned in a way you and the group see fit. Usually, what you’ll see first is a number of attempts where delegates seek to move around with as little physical contact as possible. As this quickly proves highly ineffective, the delegates realise that touching and stabilising each other is essential in order to accomplish their task. On the Teambalken creative ideas and strategies abound, and the group is literally drawn much closer together. If you wish to up the difficulty level a notch, have the group perform the activity using only nonverbal communication. Team Beam consists of five individual parts that can be linked together for adapting to seminar groups of varying sizes. Delegates (min / opt / max): 5 / 12 / 12 Time (w/o debriefing): 5 - 15 minutes Space requirements: 5 x 3 metres at full length Safety Advice: All delegates should ideally be wearing shoes with flat soles to prevent slipping. Alternatively, Teambalken can be done without shoes. Topics and Outcomes. Ice breakers: feeling comfortable with each other, learning each others’ names. Energiser: start of seminar, post lunch. Team building: interacting, coordinating, trusting, bonding, group feeling. Project management: dealing creatively with shortages. Teambalken. Contents: 1 Teambalken (beech wood), consisting of 4 parts, with non-slip cork base, 1 detailed instructions manual. Dimensions: 20 x 13 x 80 cm. Weight: 13.7 kg.

The Project. Sometimes, team members have the feeling they’re getting in each other’s way when they’re looking for solutions to problems. This often results in going-it-alone-ism and a lack of coordination. With Teambalken your delegates experience close-up that “working together” means much more than just working on the same project and at the same time. By the way, Teambalken is an excellent ice-breaking tool in a seminar and helps the delegates to become comfortable with each other.

Balltransport. Handle with care.

The project. This activity focuses on the importance of respecting the individual needs of all members in a team. When working with Balltransport, each member can only contribute effectively to accomplishing the task if all others support her/him by means of effective communication. How It’s Done. The majority of delegates put on blindfolds (the difficulty level increases with the number of delegates wearing blindfolds). The ‘blind’ are given the task of carrying a ball balanced on a metal ring from one pedestal to another. However, they are not allowed to directly touch the ring! Instead, they transport it using a number of ropes attached to the ring. The ropes must be held at the ends and not shortened. The ‘seeing’ direct the entire process by coordinating the movement of the ‘blind’. All communication is through speaking, no touching is allowed. Dropping the ball during transport is sanctioned in a way the trainer and group see fit. By setting up the two pedestals independently, you can adjust the difficulty level according to the group’s capability (for example, try placing them on bumpy terrain, or put one on a desk). Individual strings can be detached to cater for different group sizes. One more idea: When you are doing this activity outdoors, why not add to the excitement by using a raw egg instead of a ball? Delegates (min / opt / max): 4 / 9 / 12 Time (w/o debriefing): 15 - 45 minutes Space requirements: The more, the better.

Topics and Outcomes. Team building: interacting, trusting, cooperating, dealing with stress, giving feedback. Leadership training: identifying individual needs, adapting leadership style, motivating, communicating effectively and explicitly, facilitating. Project management: dealing with information shortages, visualizing project phases, determining the roles of project managers. Energiser: in the morning, post-lunch. Balltransport. Contents: 1 ring (stainless steel), 8 robust strings (3 mm x 2 m), 2 pedestals (beech, easy disassembly), 1 ball, 8 blindfolds, 1 detailed instructions manual. Dimensions: 32 x 23 x 11 cm. Teamnavigator.

Pulling on the same rope!

The project. Starting the seminar day off the right way is essential to any successful team or communication-focused process. Surprise your delegates with the Teamnavigator! This training tool allows you to turn the introduction of your seminar schedule into an interactive and process-oriented activity. This way, your seminar becomes an important team experience for the group - right from the start! With the Teamnavigator, you boost cooperation and a positive group feeling from the outset. Or, use it later during the process for teamwork and management training! How It’s Done. All delegates form a circle around the Teamnavigator. Every person picks up one or two of the ropes. The goal is to move the pen in the centre across a sheet of paper and draw an arbitrary shape, e.g. the company logo. Another possibility is to draw along a maze set by the trainer. “Name compass”: Symbolically, the team members draw their way through the seminar day, following the lines of a maze. They experience in advance both swift progress and encounter potential bumps in the road. Instead of giving each other directions in the usual way (“up”, “down”, “left”, “right,” etc.), delegates must only use each other’s names (“A little more towards Claudia and Tom!”). This is an unusual way of learning names that sets your seminar apart from anything the delegates have seen before. The trainer may also prepare the paper sheet in advance with facilitation cards half hidden in slits. Whenever the pen lands on a card, the trainer reveals one of the day’s topics. “Guide dog”: 4 - 6 delegates put on blindfolds. The others take the lead and verbally coordinate the drawing activity. The ‘blind’ experience the importance of sharing essential information; the seeing discover just how much precise instructions help overall success.

24

Topics and Outcomes. Getting started: a fun and easy kick-off, learning names, activating the group, creating team spirit. Team building: communicating, focusing on goals, cooperating, identifying interdependencies. Leadership training: communicating effectively and explicitly, motivating through information, generating trust. Delegates (min / opt / max): 6 / 10 / 14 Time (w/o debriefing): 15 - 30 minutes Space requirements: 1 x 1.5 m desktop Teamnavigator. Contents: 1 Teamnavigator (beech/ plexiglass) with 18 ropes (3 mm x 1 m, detachable), 10 maze sheets DIN A3, 1 pen, 1 detailed instructions manual. Dimensions: 42 x 60 x 9 cm. Weight: 6 kg

Heart Selling. A fair trade.

The project. How can trust between customer and salesperson be fostered so that doing business is experienced positively? What can I do during discussions to manage the “relationship account” with my business partner? But, also, what happens when the pressure rises and esteem turns to contempt? Heart Selling allows me to get valuable direct feedback on how my partner experiences my behaviour. How it’s done. The group is divided into four sales teams. Each team’s goal is to buy and sell parts (= products) through smart but fair negotiating. The task of one person from each team is to create a complete shape from these parts. The sales teams come together for three negotiating rounds and try to sell high and buy low. Between negotiating rounds, they meet for team briefings to further develop their strategy and to agree concrete steps. As in a real market, more and more new information comes to light that influences events and needs to be responded to. At the end of the negotiation rounds, the teams give each other feedback. The question is: “How did you experience the contact with the others?” The clever thing here is that the mutual feedback is either debited from or credited to the total team result, just like a “relationship account”. If they have a truthful negotiating style, the team that was initially behind in points could end up winning. Heart Selling is an ingenious tool for anyone who wants to offer first class negotiation and sales training. Topics and Outcomes. Sales training: interpreting body language, managing “relationship accounts”, building trust, selling through strong relationships, rapport. Also, how mistrust and disruption occur in relationships. Negotiation training: integrating objections, dealing with cognitive dissonance, relationship and factual levels, negotiating under pressure.

Moderationsbälle.

Conversational Pacemakers.

What the balls can mean. Use the balls flexibly and according to your needs! Every time you use them, you can give the balls new meanings - whatever you consider appropriate for your group’s situation. Here are a few suggestions: Brain: “I learned/understood that...“ Key: “A key moment for me was...“ Heart: “I experienced/felt...“ Palm: “I got the support of.. /What helped me was..“ Foot: “MY next concrete step will be...“ Camera: “The picture that is in my mind...“ Thumb up: “I would like to give positive feedback about/to...“

Structured debriefing of projects. The moments just after a learning project has finished are important for the delegates and trainer. Feelings are reflected upon and conclusions drawn, individual delegates give each other feedback. The debriefing gathers momentum – but only when it is properly guided. METALOG® Moderationsbälle support you in structuring the debriefing. You simply throw a few balls into the group. Depending on which ball a delegate receives, he or she talks about what he or she has experienced. The ball is then thrown to another delegate, who then follows with his or her own thoughts. In this way, reflecting on the project gets really into the swing. How to bring the seminar to a perfect close. If you want a more authentic and energetic final feedback round, which doesn’t involve each person saying: “I agree with him/ her…”, we recommend you use our Moderationsbälle. In the final feedback round, throw the balls into the group according to your own particular system. In this way, you clear the way for all – even the most reserved – delegates to express themselves according to the ball they receive about the topics that were of most importance to them in the seminar.

Moderationsbälle. Contents: 7 soft foam balls, 1 detailed manual. Weight: approx. 0.5 kg. Dimensions: 10 x 10 x 5 cm.

Easy Spider.

Through thick and thin.

The Project. Easy Spider is a technically advanced and improved version of the outdoor classic, spider web. Our new, innovative wire threading prevents the web from tangling during transport. That’s why, with just a little practice, you’ll be able to set it up in less than five minutes. The size of the individual holes is adjustable. The web is so flexible it adjusts to heights from 180 to 250 centimetres, and to widths form 250 to 480 centimetres. How It’s Done. Before your group arrives, set up Easy Spider by mounting it between two trees, poles, fences, walls... almost any anchor point will do! The group’s task is for all team members to get through the spider web from one side to the other. Each hole can be used only once. Touching the net in any way (body, clothing, hair, etc.) is prohibited and sanctioned in a way you and the group decide in advance. How will they manage to organise their resources in order to solve this problem? Topics and Outcomes. Leadership training: identifying interdependencies in systems, communicating, dealing with risk. Team building: interacting, coordinating, trusting, togetherness, developing group spirit. Project management: dealing with shortages, time management, quality management. Delegates (min / opt / max): 8 / 15 / 24 Time (w/o debriefing): 20 - 60 minutes Space requirements: 5 x 8 metres.

Leonardo‘s Bridge. Overcoming any obstacle.

The Project. The idea for this construction comes from the universal genius Leonardo Da Vinci. Around 1480, he designed a transportable bridge that could be erected without tools. Important goals in team development are creating stability within the group and the ability to bridge gaps and overcome obstacles. So, let your group face this challenge! Leonardo’s Bridge will result in visible success that will promote team spirit. How It’s Done. The delegates’ task is to construct a self-supporting bridge of 4 metres size, using only the 28 sticks provided. It is not allowed to use any other tools. After first brainstorming in smaller subgroups, all delegates start constructing the bridge. The key factors for success are coordination within the group, creativity and sharing of knowledge. The result will be a self-supporting construction, which can serve as a metaphor for internal and external team stability. Another issue that can be addressed is how teams grow closer, for instance, in an intercultural environment. The delegates start constructing the bridge, beginning at two ends. The bridge brings them closer together. In the end, the two parts of the bridge become one. The key factors for success are coordination, cooperation and adjustment (as regards the method of construction) between the two subgroups. Delegates (min / opt / max): 6 / 10 / 14 Time (without debriefing): 45 - 60 minutes Space requirements: 10 x 8 metres

EmotionCards.

Show how you feel.

The Project. Our EmotionCards are small, solid, multipurpose photographic works of art. Anyone looking at them makes their own instant associations. Personal experience and feelings can easily be put into words because they can be visualised. The cards can be used both for one-on-one work as well as in larger groups. How It’s Done. Debriefing of learning projects: the EmotionCards are spread out on a table. Directly after finishing a learning project, you ask the delegates to each take an EmotionCard that answer, for example, the following questions: “Which picture reflects a state you were in during the learning project?“ or “What was helpful during the learning project? Which picture best reflects this?” In the next step, each delegate presents his or her EmotionCards to the group. By doing it like this, you involve all delegates in the debriefing process. Even reserved and shy delegates are easily integrated into the discussion. The EmotionCards make different perspectives and experiences accessible to all. Here are some suggestions for using EmotionCards: Familiarisation: at the start of the seminar, you help delegates to get to know each other in a creative way. Ask the delegates to pick out one of the EmotionCards: “Choose a picture that says something personal about you!” The delegates then introduce themselves using the photos. Eliciting expectations: with the EmotionCards you can elicit your delegates’ expectations of your seminar. The delegates select one of the EmotionCards that they feel answers the question: “Which picture represents where you want to be at the end of the seminar?” Go around the group and have the delegates present their cards. Feedback: you can use the EmotionCards for feedback at the end of your seminar. Suggested questions: “What was one of the most important outcomes for you and which picture represents

this outcome?” or “What have you decided will be your next step? What are you going to put into practice in your daily life? Choose the picture that most represents this”. With the help of the chosen EmotionCard, each delegate gives his or her feedback. Other suggestions for using the EmotionCards can be found in the instructions.

Magic Nails.

Impossible? Think again!

The Project. “There’s no way you can solve this!” is probably what your trainees will say when they are confronted with Magic Nails. No wonder! Picture the following challenge: the task is to balance 17 nails on one nail. The 17 nails are not allowed to touch the base or the table. What a perfect metaphor for working with teams confronted with seemingly hopeless situations in their working life. How It’s Done. The trainer puts the base on a table. While giving instructions, he pushes the first nail into the mounting. The group has now time to discuss the task and to put the solution into practise.

Sparks fly. Ideas take wing. Designing the METALOG® training tools.

It (sometimes) takes a genius. We are constantly on the lookout for new innovative activities and interaction metaphors to give your seminar groups a more lasting impression. We find our inspiration in different places: the idea behind Leonardo’s Bridge, for example, we owe to the great genius himself, Leonardo Da Vinci!

Skilful hands. Sometimes we can hardly believe our eyes. For each and every one of our ideas, however crazy, our product designer finds the right solution in less than a blink of an eye. His workshop is the place where all METALOG® training tools come alive and are shepherded from prototype to serial production.

Responsibility. It’s one thing to help your seminar groups discover that ‘healthy’ systems integrate both strong and weak aspects. Doing your bit towards better integration of the weaker in our society, however, is a different story. That’s why the vast majority of METALOG® training tools are handcrafted by workers at Caritas workshops for the disabled in Bavaria.
