Industrial styling from Impey The new ‘Soho’ range, available exclusively from specialist wetroom manufacturer, Impey, marries highspecification functionality with on-trend aesthetics to offer a unique, design-led panel option for wetrooms and shower areas. Previewed for the first time at the recent kbb exhibition in Birmingham, the ‘Soho’ wetroom panel is inspired by the trend for urban styling and industrial partitioning. The high-quality aluminium-framed ‘Soho’ shower screen is powder coated in jet black, boasting rustic exposed framework throughout to enhance the panel’s authentic rugged appeal. This stylish screen incorporates purposely visible screws to create an unfinished aesthetic, integrated splash gaskets, completely concealed hinges and 15-20mm adjustment option, ensuring that the product is as versatile as it is attractive. Epitomising a raw, industrial style, the new ‘Soho’ panel range incorporates

HIBathroom_Mar18.indd 9

exposed aluminium frames on the outside of the unit only; with the wet side benefitting from a fully-flush surface to ensure ease of cleaning. In addition, the 8mm toughened safety glass is treated with an easy clean coating, to inhibit the build up of dirt and ensure it needs to be cleaned up to 50% less often. “A ‘Soho’ panel or door will enhance every kind of showering space from an open-plan loft to a compact hotel wetroom; offering a much-welcomed alternative to a plain glass shower screen,” comments Chris Kingaby, Impey’s product director. “The response that the range received at kbb 2018 was marvellous, with potential stockists and specifiers enthused by the attention to detail; particularly the powder-coated aluminium panel features and the clever concealed hinges. We can certainly see the range becoming incredibly popular and have already had great success with display orders.”

The bathroom as a living space Laufen presented its latest design creations and functional solutions at IMM Cologne in January, targeting architects, planners and interior designers specifically with its perspective on bathrooms as living spaces. SaphirKeramik – an extremely slim material that greatly enhances the spatial impact of the bathroom – once again played a starring role in Laufen’s fair presentation. In order to maximise its design potential, the brand worked alongside acclaimed designers Patricia Urquiola, Konstantin Grcic and Ludovica+Roberto Palomba to develop SaphirKeramik products. The Sonar bathroom collection, for example, presents the third generation of SaphirKeramik. This refined, graceful collection – designed by internationally celebrated designer, Patricia Urquiola – is characterised by the exquisite three-dimensional texture of its washbasin, washbasin-bowl and bathtub designs. The Kartell by Laufen range, developed by Ludovica+Roberto Palomba, unites the very best qualities of the two brand manufacturers. Kartell’s creativity and expertise in the design of plastic objects and Laufen’s precision in ceramics, have come together to create an elegant washbasin/vanity combination with slim ceramics for small bathrooms, a rimless WC, bathtub and printed floorstanding washbasins, mirrors and accessories. Finally, the aesthetic lightness of SaphirKeramik is showcased at its best in Val by Konstantin Grcic. The Swiss bathroom specialist has created strong architectural forms, enhanced by extraordinarily thin wall sections and surface structures, to form highly unique washbasin designs.

Victoria + Albert expands offering

04/04/2018 09:44

Luxury British bathing brand, Victoria + Albert, has added a number of new launches to its impressive portfolio. Amongst these additions are two new compact baths to supplement its modern bathing collection. The Vetralla and Vetralla 2 baths feature a simple, sleek design and an elegantly crisp rim, perfect for modern or contemporary bathrooms. The baths are deep and double-ended, comfortably holding one or two people for single or double bathing. The Vetralla measures just 1500mm in length, making it one of the most compact baths in Victoria + Albert’s range, while the Vetralla 2 measures 1650mm. As with all Victoria + Albert’s baths, both of the new compact baths are made using the brand’s exclusive material, QUARRYCAST – a unique blend of Volcanic Limestone™ and high performance resins with a number of beneficial properties. Warm to the touch, it is luxuriously smooth, wipe clean, scratch-resistant, super-strong and lightweight. So confident is Victoria + Albert with its material, each bath comes with a 25- year consumer guarantee. Traditionally, QUARRYCAST has been available in a natural gloss white finish. However, all Victoria + Albert Baths are now available in seven distinctive external finishes, including Gloss White, Gloss Black, Matt White, Matte Black, Anthracite, Stone Grey and Light Grey. Victoria + Albert has also added two new recessed basins to its collection – a new category for the brand. Lario 100 Solo and Mandello 114 Solo allow the installer to create a custom surround to

coordinate with the rest of the bathroom. The basins can be formatted as a single, or alternatively in larger bathrooms as a sideby-side ‘his and hers’ option. Designed by the award-winning design duo Meneghello Paolelli Associati, both feature full width tap ledges which is the perfect place for those essential bathroom toiletries. The Lario 100 Solo takes its design cues from Victorian design. The basin features

a subtle rim detail and a full width tap deck so that brassware can be mounted straight onto the basin, making it easier to clean. The Mandello 114 Solo, meanwhile, is elegantly contoured and features a unique shape modelled on a water drop as it touches the surface of the water. Again, it features a full width tap deck for easy cleaning and plenty of space to store those all-important toiletries.

WETSTYLE launches Déco Collection

WETSTYLE, a Montreal-based manufacturer of premium-quality bath furnishings, has teamed-up with designers Joël Dupras and Pierre Belanger in conjunction with the WETSTYLE Design Lab to craft the Déco Collection of vanity systems. Inspired by the glamour and decadence of the Art Déco age, Déco is infused with softened geometric forms and luxurious finish details, including brushed stainless steel, satin brass or matte black for legs and handles. Thoughtfully designed and carefully crafted, the wall-mounted, floor-mounted and free-standing variations of Déco are fitting for both modern and traditional suites. Playing to the needs of today’s bathroom, Déco seamlessly integrates itself into the routines of end-users with above-vanity mirrors and countertop wash basins available to complement the vanities. Déco’s elegant form extends itself to suites of any sizes, with five size variations to select from, ranging from 24 to 60 inches. Versatility in sizing allows for the vanities to be offered in single and double-basin versions, making application in smaller powder rooms and hospitality spaces possible.

HIBathroom_Mar18.indd 19

Floor-mounted variations exude architectural detail with sleek rectangular base supports and a storage shelf in line with the vanity’s top. The collection is offered in an array of rare wood finishes, including premium quality oak, walnut, torrefied eucalyptus and Mozambique wood. Several different shades of lacquer – Stone Harbor Grey, Black and White – are also available to put a modern touch on the vanities. The sophisticated style of the vanities is

also reflected in the collection’s Décorative mirrors. Crafted from all-natural solid wood and finished by artisans in the brand’s Montreal-based factory, the collection’s mirrors take on a softened shape with polished edges and rounded corners. Mounted using a z-clip system, the mirrors offer the perfect complement above the collection’s vanities, and are available in a variety of sizes from 24 to 60 inches.

Sottini supplies high-specification bathrooms for luxury Birmingham hotel Sottini, the bathroom brand synonymous with modern elegant design and a luxury finish, has been awarded a contract by Colmore Tang Construction to supply the new £50m Park Regis Hotel in Birmingham with 253 luxury bathrooms, including ceramics and brassware fittings. The architects responsible for the specification worked closely with Sottini’s dedicated team of experts to choose products that would complement the chic and modern ambience of the hotel. Sottini’s Vara platforms were selected for the standard guest rooms, offering a sleek but strong design with a boutique feel, while the Presidential Suite was specified with the Vara suite and freestanding bath tub. “Sottini is a strong brand with a strong heritage,” says Andy Robinson, managing director at Colmore Tang Construction. “We were impressed by the brand’s local team and its desire to assist us in the design process to get the best quality possible for Park Regis. We had a demanding design specification and wanted the best standard of product possible for the best value.

HIBathroom_Mar18.indd 20

“We went through a rigorous sample and approval process, which Sottini supported us with throughout, and the manufacturer met our requirements for the project across quality, availability and budget. Throughout the hotel, Sottini can be found in all 253 bedrooms, public area toilets on levels 4 and 15, its ‘Shakina’ urban dry spa, back-of-house areas and accessible bathrooms. “It has been exciting for us to be involved in the re-launch of the Sottini brand. Birmingham is the Park Regis brand’s first hotel in Europe and it seemed fitting that we were installing a new product ahead of both launches. We have been continually impressed with Sottini’s quality and it integrates seamlessly with the high-end, luxury finish of this four-star hotel.” “We are the inspirational partner for unique, high-specification bathrooms and are delighted to have worked on this prestigious 4-star hotel development to create bathrooms that offer elegant style and which reflect the contemporary ambience of the hotel,” adds Sottini’s business development manager, Charlotte Denton.

Q&A 23

Q&A: Phillip Cole, Perrin & Rowe Hospitality Interiors speaks with Perrin & Rowe’s contracts manager, Phillip Cole, to find out more about the brand’s rich heritage and manufacturing excellence.

Could you provide a brief overview of Perrin & Rowe’s heritage and current offering please? Believe it or not, the company started life in a large barn in one of the founder’s back gardens in 1978! Today, Perrin & Rowe is one of the largest manufacturers of handmade kitchen and bathroom products in Great Britain – offering crafted brassware, sanitaryware and chinaware around the globe. What do you feel makes Perrin & Rowe unique? Our collections offer contractors a broad choice when it comes to both style and function, and thanks to an in-house design team and UK manufacturing we can also specify bespoke solutions. By controlling every stage of the process – from design to prototyping and production – we can concentrate on perfecting each hand-built product, so whether it’s a company name laser-etched on the product, or the design and production of a completely new collection, every client’s needs and requirements are looked after by our dedicated contracts team to deliver the client brief – no matter what the scale of the project or budget.

What makes Perrin & Rowe such a good fit for the hospitality industry specifically? The longevity and quality of design is of paramount importance when it comes to brassware, as it can be a costly exercise when taps and showers go wrong. Not only does high quality hardware look better and last longer, but it also offers guests a memorable experience, which is why Perrin & Rowe is ideal for the hospitality industry. All our brassware is carefully cast, soldered, polished and inspected by hand in our foundry in Wolverhampton – the result is a flawless finish and unbeatable performance. Deeply plated for greater longevity and aesthetic appeal, our brassware also benefits from bearing rings and engineering ‘O’ seals to prolong the life of the product, while also delivering a wobble-free feel. Other highlights include ¼ turn ceramic disc valves and stainless steel braided connection hoses to give a modern performance. Quality sanitaryware is also a must – you don’t want to run the risk of basins being discoloured or having an uneven glaze. Ours are made in Tamworth from the finest Cornish Clay by 10 highly skilled and passionate artisans. The basins are glazed by hand to a thickness that exceeds

industry standards and fired three times in a kiln at temperatures up to 1200°C for a superb finish. From the beginning to the end of the process, a human rather than a robot is in control; from handmaking the production moulds and cases to ensure every basin is of the same quality, to mixing the clay by hand for the perfect consistency, and inspecting the basins after drying, firing and glazing. What would you say are the key trends for hospitality bathrooms at the moment? Luxury is and has always been a key trend within the hospitality sector we work in. Part of staying in a top hotel is a fantastic shower experience with luxurious products such as a 12-inch rose, rain bars and body sprays. A freestanding bath with a floormounted bath-shower mixer is the ultimate indulgence and exudes sophistication. Open-plan living is also a luxurious trend in hotel bathroom design. Minimalist walk-in showers with streamlined trays, undermounted basins for a sleek countertop and geometric-shaped chinaware with clean lines are in demand. However, when space is at a premium, well-designed and multifunctional products are key, such as bathshower mixers that offer guests a choice of bathing options and sleek monobloc basin mixers. Beautiful textures and colours are also making their way into hotel bathroom designs along with fixtures and fittings in special finishes. Our Satin Brass finish is proving particularly popular for bathroom hardware, as it’s understated to fit in with modern accessories, but carries that subtle hint of glamour. Could you tell us a little about Perrin & Rowe’s new showroom? While we have displays across the UK with retailers, this is the first showroom that is dedicated to Perrin & Rowe products and allows designers, architects, developers, specifiers and consumers to see the collections and finishes under one roof. The Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour is a prestigious destination for the design industry and home to many influential

04/04/2018 09:44

24 Q&A

brands and individuals, and we are excited to become part of this community. It is a great space to showcase and demonstrate first-hand the quality of Perrin & Rowe, by allowing visitors the opportunity to see and feel products for themselves. A dedicated meeting area also provides architects and designers with a space to meet with clients and our Contracts team to discuss projects. What is Perrin & Rowe’s main product focus at the moment? Our exciting new contemporary bathroom collection which we previewed at KBB will soon be available, which is something entirely new for Perrin & Rowe. The pared-back designs are the perfect companion to a modern bathroom and designers will be able to choose from a full shower set for the ultimate indulgence, a bath-shower mixer if space is at a premium and a basin mixer along with accessories to finish the design. Could you take me through some of Perrin & Rowe’s most recent hospitality projects? Our most recent project has been our work with the beautiful castle property, Adare Manor. Our Traditional chrome brassware and accessories were specified in each of its luxurious, five-star 104 ensuite bathrooms, as well as the patron bathrooms, kitchens, staff quarters and stunning spa, following an extensive restoration.

Perrin & Rowe brassware display

For a truly unique and special look, all the indices of the brassware were etched with both the Perrin & Rowe and Adare Manor logos. It was a fantastic project to be part of and we are honoured to have been specified in such a luxurious destination. What would be Perrin & Rowe’s dream project? We have worked on a whole variety of projects including both large scale resorts

and boutique hotels, and so we are very adaptable. We always enjoy the challenge of adding bespoke elements to a specification to further enhance our offering to the client. Ultimately our dream project is where our service and product exceeds the client’s expectations, as this is always our main goal. Plus, a remote tropical island that required plenty of site visits would also be ideal!

New bathroom designs from Mullan Lighting Mullan Lighting showcased its expanded range of bathroom lights at this year’s Light + Building trade fair in Frankfurt. The new IP-rated lights have been specifically designed for installation in wet areas, including bathrooms, most outdoor areas and high humidity locations. “Over the past six months we’ve worked aggressively to expand our range of bathroom and outdoor lights,” says Mike Treanor, director of design and operations at Mullan Lighting. “All of our new bathroom lights are rated IP54 which gives interior designers and architects increased freedom to specify our lights in commercial projects. “Our new designs can be installed in almost any bathroom or outdoor location. We see decorative bathroom lighting as having significant growth potential for Mullan Lighting and will continue to expand this range in 2018.”

unlocks potential for highly creative and practical bathroom design schemes. Naturally, as well as cutting-edge design possibilities, the resulting bathrooms are incredibly hygienic and easy to maintain, which of course is a priority in the hospitality sector. While tiles are difficult to keep clean, HI-MACS® surfacing can provide a non-porous, seamless bathing, showering or spa area without a jot of space for dirt and germs to lurk. This smooth, sensuous, scratch-proof and sleek material is made from 75% natural minerals and pigments which are then set into an acrylic matrix – and can also be thermoformed into sweeping curved shapes to provide striking baths, sinks, benches, seating areas and even beds. The current trend for smart and pin-sharp internal corners means that bespoke shower areas and basins with back splashes can be achieved with curves of just 6mm internal radius when using the NEW HI-MACS® Ultra Thermoforming Alpine White. This radical advance and departure is the result of new technological and fabrication achievements – the minimum radius used to be 50mm, so this has considerably expanded the design possibilities. Bespoke wall cladding in en-suites, bathrooms and spa areas can create a ‘whole-room’ look that not only looks striking and glamorous, but which has the very important advantage of straightforward maintenance and minimal signs of use, even in high-traffic areas. HI-MACS® advisors suggest that high-traffic, often-cleaned areas are suited to matt, semi-gloss and satin finishes. The striking colour range is currently embracing bright and vibrant shades such as Lemon Squash and Festival Pink, which are ideal for adding a ‘colour pop’ to an otherwise subdued or neutral scheme. If a cosier, more intimate look is required, designers can consider the numerous shades of black, some of which include sparkles. There are also over 20 grey options, from plain solid colours to the five brand new concrete colours. Perfect for creating concrete-style looks in stylish bathrooms.

Glazed titanium-steel bath, shower floor and washbasin manufacturer, Bette, will be demonstrating its innovative approach to bathroom interiors at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week. The brand will launch a new bath at this year’s event, as well as exhibiting a host of its most inventive bathroom solutions and highlighting the wide range of colours it offers. Bette’s new bath, the BetteStarlet Spirit, is a classic design with a refined, minimal bath rim that combines proven styling with modern lightness. The folded bath rim of only 8mm underscores the elegance of this timeless bath, the elegant line of which looks at home anywhere. The geometrically embossed BetteLoft Ornament bath and basin will also be on display in an innovative new colour – unlike any currently available in the Bette range – in addition to the award-winning BetteLux Oval Couture fabric-covered bath. Bette will also be showing its minimal and flushto-floor shower area, BetteFloor Side, which is available in an extensive range of sizes and colours. Bette’s Exclusive Colours – a range

of matt colours designed to coordinate with popular flooring – have been designed so that the shower floor can coordinate with the bathroom floor. Bette’s baths, shower floors and washbasins are finished in a highly durable enamel which can be created in hundreds of different colours, and there is also the opportunity to colourmatch ceramic items, such as tiles. The glass-like BetteGlaze surface of Bette baths, shower floors and washbasins is harder than marble, plastic or epoxy granite, nonporous, scratch-resistant and easy to clean. The durability and ease of cleaning are the reasons the majority of hotels choose glazed titaniumsteel for their baths, and why Bette is able to offer a 30 year warranty on its glazed steel products. All Bette products are made of titaniumsteel for superior strength and formability. This means that Bette can, for example, produce shower trays in very large sizes or create extremely slim rimmed baths that remain strong and stable. Bette’s flexible manufacturing process means that customers can order bespoke sized products, such as a shower tray or fitted bath, in the exact size required. Sustainability is central to Bette’s approach, and this is confirmed by the company‘s Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) which complies with ISO 14025 and EN15804. 0844 800 0547

The complete solution for bathroom surfaces Bathroom vanity tops, walls and floors are surfaces that are always on show, so they need to look the part and to be suitable for an environment which is often steamy, wet and subject to a lot of wear and tear. Durability is therefore extremely important, with materials that are hard-wearing, waterproof and heat resistant working best. Ceralsio by CRL Stone is an attractive, hard-wearing and versatile range of ceramic surfaces. Solving the problem of the misty mirror

demistaTM heated mirror pads are the perfect solution to steamed up mirrors in the bathroom. Easy to fit behind mirrors, the pads are wired in the electrical system, and ensure that the steam vanishes almost immediately. This additional luxury of having steam-free mirrors allows guests to shave, do hair and makeup, with an unspoilt, clear view, at all times. For this reason, leading hotel groups and prestige apartment developments in the UK and abroad now include the pads as the norm in either new build or refurbishment projects. Prestigious hotels, including the Park Plaza at Westminster Bridge, the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel in Hong Kong, the Burj al Arab in Dubai, the majestic St Pancras Hotel, the Lanesborough and luxury boutique hotels Blakes and The Kensington, have all incorporated demistaTM heated mirror pads in their bathrooms. demistaTM pads are available in an array of sizes – with a bespoke service offered – and can be used in multiples for very large mirrors. In addition to heated mirror pads, the, Cosyfloor, Ecofloor and Ecomat divisions of demistaTM offer a range of underfloor heating products. Both Cosyfloor and Ecofloor can be used in any environment, including areas where the floor may get wet such as bathrooms and shower rooms, while Ecomat can be used in hallways, bedrooms and living areas. Underfloor heating means no unsightly radiators, adding valuable space to smaller rooms. Whether under timber floors, tiles, slate, marble, vinyl or carpet, underfloor heating is safe, reliable, and offers gentle, comfort heating levels whenever and wherever it is needed. Temperature can be easily controlled via room thermostats to produce the most cost effective and efficient heating. 01932 866600

Inclusive toileting solutions from Closomat Cube, GROHE’s third ceramic range, offers clean lines and linear shapes that allow specifiers, architects and designers to create stylish, statement bathrooms within projects across an array of hospitality, commercial and urban spaces. With the addition of its new ceramic lines, GROHE is not just offering ceramics but the full bathroom concept from basins to thermostatic showering. Armed with superior technical know-how, the award-winning GROHE design team developed the washbasins, toilets and bidets with a view to match the geometric shapes of its Eurocube, Lineare, Allure and Allure Brilliant ranges, ensuring a perfect combination of form and function. With its minimalist look of contemporary and urban-inspired shapes, the Cube Ceramic products also ensure maximum hygiene and maximum comfort for the user. The high-quality toilets of the Cube Ceramic line are equipped with rimless flushing technology and a soft close toilet seat, whilst the powerful Triple Vortex flush creates a vortex using three water inlets that optimally clean the entire interior basin and are also significantly quieter than conventional toilets.

HIBathroom_Mar18.indd 50

The key to optimum client satisfaction lies in the bathroom, according to leading provider of inclusive toileting solutions, Closomat. “We think of inclusion and accessibility as applying to people with disabilities,” explains Robin Tuffley, Closomat’s marketing manager. “But they apply to everyone – including racial, religious, physical and mental considerations.” The company’s unique Lima Lifter wash & dry (automatic bidet) toilet provides an upmarket WC solution that, in one unit, is as inclusive as possible. Its integrated douching and drying addresses cultural preferences about hygiene, while it is also fully heightadjustable via simple push buttons, meaning that each user can adapt it to their own needs for comfort. It can also be used as a conventional WC if preferred. “Having such a toilet makes a great selling point, to differentiate your venue from the competition,” adds Robin. “The Japanese particularly view wash & dry toilets as the ‘norm’, so the 0.25million visitors who come to the UK from there can be deterred by what they view as our unhygienic method of cleaning after toileting. “And height adjustability of a WC is a major consideration for taller people, especially someone who is disabled: we’ve actually had clients comment that, when away from home, they can’t use the loo because if they can actually transfer onto a conventional loo, at regulatory height, they can’t then get off it! Disabled travellers and their parties spend £12.4billion a year in the UK.”

Welcome to the world of µ Mosa.

HIBathroom_Mar18.indd 51 MosaOct17.indd 1

A floor tile series designed to interact with space and time Mosa µ [mu] cleverly responds to a setting’s changing light, subtly shifting shades during the course of the day. Born out of Mosa’s deep understanding of the world of ceramics, the series is inspired by the extraordinary relationship between illumination and the colour spectrum. Nature, art, and trends in architecture, as well as ancient Greek philosophers’ visions on colour and light, played a pivotal role in the creation of µ.
