Comment As we venture forth into a new decade, I wonder how the period of tumult and opportunity we’ve just endured will be viewed in time. Many will proffer the globalisation of major issues such a climate change, plastic waste, on going conflict (terrorism?), the Internet of Things actually becoming a thing, wider female representation and advancement of LGBT rights, Mr Trump becoming US President, Boris Johnson becoming our PM, and of course the tiresome and tedious three-and-a-half years of trying to ‘get Brexit done’. Immediately post-election, it is widely believed that now that we have the ability to get the bill through Parliament – even with the Brexit negotiation period ahead of us – businesses will feel more confident and positive about investing in plant and equipment, meaning the industry can start to overcome the malaise which has beset supply channels into the furniture and joinery production industry. In the weeks leading up to the general election, I was already noticing an up-tick in ambition and belief from small- and medium-sized manufactures looking to invest as we emerge from the last three/four years of subdued activity. Hopefully, some of the plans which had been put on ice will now be brought forward and actioned. For most furniture and joinery manufacturers, a strong housebuilding programme would provide greater belief in current Government policy which is aimed at providing residents in housing association stock with the opportunity for shared ownership. This in itself is good, but for the wider population we need regular housing stock that average working families can afford. In my opinion, too many developers are still land-banking, waiting for mega-margin £500k-1m ghetto projects which provide the lucky few with their next dream property, but ideally, we need to get the young onto the property ladder sooner so that the whole market has mobility. This will mean greater furniture and joinery production volumes. Here’s hoping ... And finally, readers will note on p6 that our long-standing subeditor, Keith Fitz-Hugh, sadly passed away in December. The clichéd ‘they don’t make ‘em like that any more’ is over-used. Yet for Keith, whose endeavour, humanity and humour will live long in our memory, it seems entirely appropriate. RIP Keith Fitz-Hugh.

CASE STUDY

WILSONART UK

Wilsonart UK are the United Kingdom’s largest manufacturer of laminate worktops, making more than 100,000 worktops every month from their Shildon factory campus in County Durham. They are part of the Wilsonart Group, who are global market leaders and have been serving the UK industry for over 20 years at their current site.

Heat is a critical part of the manufacturing process at Wilsonart, and production would cease without a reliable heat source for the production lines. Wilsonart have operated for 20 years using a Talbott C Range Biomass Boiler system originally installed in the 1990s. In 2019, following an extensive procurement process, Wilsonart have chosen to replace this with a Talbott MWE 1500 biomass boiler system. The Talbott MWE 1500 is eligible to receive Renewable Heat Incentive subsidy payments from the UK Government for the next 20 years. The Talbott MWE 1500, installed in May 2019 at Wilsonart, is operated continuously to provide process heat for the factory, and also provides space heating to the workshop areas.

Wilsonart and Talbott’s co-operated to land a project meeting our fundamental requirements of safety, on cost, on schedule and on performance. All targets were met with no interruption to the business. A big thank you to all involved.

At full capacity, the MWE 1500 is capable of reducing waste to landfill by up to 60 tonnes per week and displacing more than 20,000 litres of heating oil every single week. This saves many tonnes of CO2 emissions from the site each year, in-line with Wilsonart’s active sustainability policy which conforms to BS EN ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. Globally, Wilsonart operate many biomass boiler systems at their factories, and the UK factory had experience of operating a biomass boiler system for over two decades. As such, they thoroughly investigated the biomass market, including expensive importation of European boilers, before visiting a number of Talbott installations and deciding that the Talbott MWE 1500, manufactured here in the UK, is the perfect system for their requirements. The system was installed with an Air Plants hot gas ceramic filtration system to clean the boiler emissions and remove Particulate Matter, far exceeding the requirements under the site Environmental Permit and installed with the approval of their local environmental health officer. In addition to the supply and installation of the MWE 1500 biomass boiler and ceramic filters, Talbott’s also upgraded the plantroom mechanical pipework services at Wilsonart. This work was designed and undertaken by Air Plants Heating, a proud part of the Air Plants group along with Talbott’s Biomass Energy Systems Ltd.

OBITUARY Keith Fitz-Hugh 1974-2019 It is with profound regret that Furniture & Joinery Production announces the passing of its longterm proofreader, Keith Fitz-Hugh.

A print compositor by trade, Keith started working as the sub-editor/ proofreader at Gearing Media Group (then Nigel Gearing Ltd) on January 4th, 1994. He went on to work with us for almost 25 years, maintaining our magazines’ house style and standards of accuracy. “Keith’s death was a real blow,” says Gearing Media Group’s managing director, John Legg. “His patience, witty humour and busy pen will be missed by all.” Keith passed away on 23rd November at the age of 72, and his funeral took place at Hastings Crematorium on 13th December. A true fan of Liverpool FC, Keith was played out to Gerry & The Pacemakers’ You’ll Never Walk Alone. RIP Keith.

Eight level 2 manufacturing apprenticeship pathways to be renewed for 2020 The Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance (FIESTA) is finishing 2019 on a high after confirming that eight level 2 manufacturing apprenticeship pathways will be renewed in 2020, following much campaigning by the trade body. Back in July the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IFATE), the controlling authority on apprenticeship standards, warned that the current Furniture Manufacturer standard would need reviewing before the end of 2019 as it was no longer fit for purpose. This meant that the existing single standard with pathways would need to be replaced by separate standards for each specialist occupation if government funded skills training is to be maintained. Due to a lack of uptake and concerns surrounding funding, FIESTA had planned on rationalising the current standard, phasing out five pathways and creating four new level 2 furniture pathways: 1. Fitted Furniture Installer 2. Furniture Manufacturer

Gary Baker

3. Modern Upholsterer 4. Wood Machinist (incorporating Furniture CNC Specialist) In October, FIESTA undertook a campaign to win support from manufacturers for the other standards and has since received backing from bed manufacturer Silentnight and sofa manufacturer and retailer, DFS. Both companies will support the development of the Bed Manufacturer standard and the Modern Furniture Service Repairer

standard, respectively. Furthermore, the Modern Upholsterer standard is to be reviewed with the support of apprenticeship experts Achieve & Partners. FIESTA has also received industry support for the review and development of the Furniture Restorer standard. Gary Baker, FIESTA chairman, said: “The substantial steps successfully undertaken by FIESTA means that nine of the existing 10 pathways will be developed into eight standards, with only the Foam Converter pathway ceasing to exist. We would like to thank the companies and individuals who have heeded our calls for support. I’m very excited about the developments we will be able to announce next year as FIESTA starts to get traction and add real value to the industry.” The news of the renewal of the level 2 pathways follows the completion and imminent launch of the level 3 apprenticeship standards in New Furniture Product Developer, Advanced CNC Technician, Bespoke Furniture Maker and Advanced Upholsterer. www.fiestalearning.com

The Chairman’s comment Since the company started in 1984, political comment has been absent from our pages for a variety of reasons – mainly because I have felt that it is our job to report on the industry, rather than the broader issues emanating from Westminster. However, it would be wrong not express a huge sigh of relief that there is light at the end of the tunnel in regard to Brexit, and the removal of the very real threat of an extreme left government and all of its implications. Our industry is often very susceptible to the vagaries of domestic economic pressure – when compared to others which are more oriented around national infrastructure, commodities and niche areas of leisure (and sometimes retail). Hopefully now, the shackles on investment, expenditure and marketing will slowly be removed, and companies within our marketplace will feel confident enough to go

FP315_Pages.indd 6

forward in a full and positive way again. This, of course, will be more than likely when consumers develop their own confidence in a stable economy and a revitalised housing market, which is nearly always the case in the UK. December 12th should be a date to celebrate, and marked as the launchpad for a brighter long-term future and a vastly improved 2020 – certainly in basic trading terms. Don’t forget that the depression (not recession) of 2008-12 was eventually left behind by a disgruntled public who were determined to turn their back on continued bad news. In many ways, the past three-and-a-half years have felt the same, and the people have now turned to an option that will lead them (and therefore us) out of the doldrums. Let’s once again do business. We are here to work with you and help take you forward. Nigel Gearing Chairman, Gearing Media Group

XL Joinery’s decides on carbon neutral projects As part of its ongoing commitment to keeping up to carbon neutral standards, XL Joinery, a leading supplier of doors and associated products, has announced its support of three inspiring projects throughout 2020. The projects were chosen as a result of a staff vote at the company’s head office. The first project chosen was the Borehole Rehabilitation Project, which helps ensure safe supplies of clean drinking water for local communities in Uganda. The support will help the project identify and repair broken boreholes, thereby lowering the risk of disease by providing clean drinking water. The need for fuel is also lessened as water does not need to be boiled before consumption. XL Joinery will also be supporting the Nanyang Dajing River Solar Cooker Project in China which helps replace 50,000 stoves in the Nanyang region with clean solar cookers. This simultaneously builds a better quality of life for the local community and lessens the impact on the environment. Finally, staff voted to continue support of the Mariposas Hydroelectric Power Project which recycles the unclean waters of the Maule Norte Alto canal in order to generate electricity, replacing traditional gas or coal.

David Crossley, above, head of the carbon neutral team at XL Joinery, commented: “We are so proud to be supporting these projects that not only help to combat climate change and also people who are most at risk. Sustainability is at the forefront of our business and we will continue to pave the way for sustainable business practices in the future.” www.xljoinery.co.uk

National sales manager appointed at J & C O’Meara

Fabric Show date change

J & C O’Meara has announced the appointment of Jeff Green as its national sales manager. Jeff will already be a familiar figure to many within the woodworking and panel processing industries, having previously been operations manager for Apex Interior Systems and, more recently, operations director at Integral Surface Designs. Jeff was one of the key figures within both Jeff Green, J & C O’Meara’s new national sales manager companies, but also a founding member and operations director of Integral Surface Designs which, in the space of just seven years, has grown into a multi-million-pound manufacturing success. J & C O’Meara MD, Carl O’Meara says of the company’s new appointment: “We feel Jeff very much fits our business ethos as he is bringing more to the role than just sales, he is bringing priceless experience and can therefore comfortably talk to existing and potential customers about manufacturing, production and realisations. “Jeff will be concentrating on customers looking for CNCs, beam saws and so forth, and he is also well-placed to act in an advisory capacity regarding streamlining manufacturing processes and helping companies to grow in the most cost-effective and productive way,” explains Carl.

Avia the first ever smart lock to gain Sold Secure approval

Whitemeadow marks 25 years

TH T

Avia, by Mighton, has become the first ever smart lock to have its mechanical security approved by Sold Secure, the UK’s Premier test and certification company for security products, owned by the Master Locksmiths Association – a milestone that follows recent accolades from the British Standards Institution (BSI) and European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) and one that underlines not just the strength of Avia’s software security, but its hardware credentials as well. Avia, which was the first smart lock to achieve the Government’s Code of Practice for consumer Internet of Things (IoT) security, has been raising the bar for smart lock integrity since it was unveiled at CES 2019 in Las Vegas. Designed to work with Apple’s HomeKit security ecosystem, widely regarded the most secure platform available, Avia also utilises

a TS 007 3-star / SS312 Diamond cylinder that helps to ensure peace of mind for homeowners. Sold Secure, a scheme that is dedicated to reducing the risk of crime through the rigorous assessment of security products, subjected the Avia secure smart lock to a series of gruelling tests, at its purpose-built laboratories in Rugby. These included efforts to compromise the lock via manual attack testing including, amongst others, drilling through the test door in order to short circuit Avia’s electronics, an attempt to access the wires that power the lock’s electronic thumbturn and a more traditional cylinder ‘snap’ test. Mighton chairman, Mike Derham, commented: “When we set about developing Avia, one of our primary objectives was that it had to offer the very best levels of security

FP315_Pages.indd 10

for both its electronic and its mechanical elements. Consumers will only trust smart products to protect their homes if they can be assured that their homes are as secure as possible to counter both hacking and physical attacks. Thanks to BSI accreditation earlier this year, Avia is leading the way on IoT security and now, with the latest approval by Sold Secure, we

Whitemeadow celebrated its 25th anniversary in the upholstery industry last week. The 12th December marked the exact day 25 years ago that Whitemeadow came into existence. “The business has developed beyond recognition in our 25 years, starting from humble beginnings with a handful of employees at our first site, to where we are now, one of the biggest furniture makers in the UK with six manufacturing units and over 600 employees,” comments managing director, Ian Oscroft. “This achievement is solely down to one thing and that is the people who have worked for us over the years”. Whitemeadow has over 20 employees that have 20+ years’ experience at the company, totalling over 567 years! To mark the occasion, staff

across all six sites were treated to cupcakes and a free prize draw. The company also unveiled its own ‘Wall of Fame’, celebrating those members of staff who have worked at Whitemeadow for 25 years. Head of group sales, Daniel Oscroft, adds: “Exciting times are ahead for Whitemeadow as the next few years will see us focus not only on strengthening our position as a key supplier to the UK’s upholstery market, but we will also focus on becoming a company recognised for its sustainability by implementing manufacturing processes and products that address current environmental concerns”. Whitemeadow is looking forward to kicking off 2020 with its biggest stand yet at the January Furniture Show. www.whitemeadow.com

have shown that it is also incredibly resistant to traditional methods of attack.” Sold Secure managing director, Dr Steffan George added: “We’re delighted to have approved the mechanical security provided by Avia where it has met the criteria for SS301 Silver approval. It is the first smart lock this approval has been granted to.” Mighton’s Avia is the first Apple Homekit smart lock to be developed for handle operated multipoint systems and is available to trade customers from Mila, or to homeowners direct from the Avia website. Avia allows homeowners to check on the status of their entrance door via the Avia App, and unlock it either with iPad, iPhone Apple Watch, fob, keypad or even traditional key. An option for facial recognition is expected soon. www.mightonproducts.com

Young Furniture Makers feature at January Furniture Show

Following on from sponsoring the awards ceremony for the Young Furniture Makers’ Awards (YFM) at The Furniture Makers’ Awards ceremony in October, January Furniture Show will include a feature showing a selection of the winning designs at the entrance to Hall 1 of JFS. Over 100 designs of furniture and lighting were entered for the YFM awards – covering both domestic and contract use. The featured selection of around 10 designs will show the range of talent and inventiveness among young designers working today – some of whom are still studying and some who are already graduates. Commenting on the feature, January Furniture event director

Cleere Scamell said: “It was clear at the YFM Awards ceremony in October, that there is both real talent and genuine enthusiasm amongst young designers to use and re-use materials carefully. They not only showed imagination but created furniture with artistry and precision and produced practical, eye-catching and truly unique pieces.” He continued: “We are privileged to have some of those designs at JFS in 2020 and I have no doubt that the YFM feature at the entrance to Hall 1 will be a conversation piece in itself.” Entrance to January Furniture Show is free and visitors can register now at: www.januaryfurnitureshow.com

2020 Vision design competition to help nurture new talent The Furniture Industry Research Association launched details of a new design competition to support new talent to/within the furniture industry. The competition will close with finalists being showcased at Clerkenwell Design Week (19th-21st May 2020) and the winners being announced at the event. The competition is open to designers with less than three years in the furniture industry and all undergraduate students studying on furniture, design or architecture related courses in a UK university. Due to the close connection with Clerkenwell Design Week, the 2020 Vision Design Competition is all centered around contract furniture, with the aim of encouraging creativity and invention in reducing the impact of furniture on the world. Entrants must base their design around an item of furniture for the commercial sector (i.e. office, workspace, hospitality etc.), and it should fall into one of the following categories: • A new piece of furniture capable of being reused, remanufactured or repurposed • An existing product/material (whether furniture or not) that can be reused, remanufactured or repurposed as a piece of furniture for its second life.

Jay Blades

Sustainability is very much at the heart of the competitions brief and entrants are encouraged to consider issues such as: • Innovative materials • Design for remanufacture • The use of materials and resources, whether in the design or manufacture of the product. Speaking on the launch of the new 2020 Vision Design Competition, Phil Reynolds, chief operating officer of the Furniture Industry Research Association, said “We’re very excited to be launching this new design competition, and it also shows the wider role of the Research Association. We’re not just here to support those who are established in the industry and who rely on us for knowledge, but we also exist to nurture new talent and give them a solid start to their career. The expert judging panel for the design competition includes: • Jay Blades, furniture up-cycler and presenter of the BBC’s ‘Money for nothing’ and ‘The repair shop’. Further details on the design competition are available from www.fira.co.uk/designcomp or via info@fira.co.uk

DIPA Symposium invites delegates to ‘design your own surface’ On 6th February 2020, the first DIPA Symposium – Digital Printing Association – on surface design with digital printing will start after the association was founded last year. The one-day event will be held at the Hannover Exhibition Grounds in the conference area of Hall 19 and is aimed at all companies that produce or market individually designed surfaces. The congress, with lectures, field reports and extensive networking opportunities, offers answers to the topic ‘Design Your Own Surface’. The DIPA Symposium encourages an exchange between interested parties and companies that are already successfully using digital printing or intend to do so

FP315_Pages.indd 12

in the future, as well as potential suppliers. Topics include different printing systems and technologies, correct pre- and post-treatment, handling of decor and design, prepress workflow, interface connection to the web shop, and the biggest challenges in digital printing. In May 2019, the DIPA interest group was presented for the first time at LIGNA, the world’s leading trade fair for woodworking and wood processing. DIPA has set itself the goal of making digital printing accessible and further disseminating it as an innovative process for surface design and decoration. In July 2019 the first symposium

took place in Brixen, Italy. The positive response to this event as well as the great interest from the market have encouraged the founding companies to transform into a registered association.

In November all preparations were completed to officially found the association. The founding members are ADLER-Werk Lackfabrik Johann Berghofer, Deutsche Messe, DURST Image Technology Deutschland, DURST Professional Services, HOMAG, Li&Co and MB Digitalprint.

The executive board is Ali Özyilmaz, managing partner of MB Digitalprint. The association representing a co-operation network for both crafts and industrial enterprises addresses all companies and users, who are involved in the process of the individual surface organisation. These are companies that produce digitally printed surfaces, companies that sell digitally printed workpieces and suppliers that provide the necessary technology, raw materials and corresponding services. Registration is open now at www.dipa-surface. com/#registration.

contemporary frescoes, solid surface supplier, KULA, and Croatian decorative glass producer, Bokar. The show’s central theme this year will be ‘Close to Home’, and will look beyond aesthetics to explore manufacturers’ impact upon the environment. This will cover everything from the processes used in mining or manufacture to the carbon footprint sustained during sales and distribution. Surface Spotlight Live will focus in on this theme. Curated by trend expert, Sally Angharad, and forecasters, Colour Hive, the exhibit will explore the future of material design. Stone Gallery will also make a return for 2020,

accompanied by the Stone Knowledge Hub, where architects and designers can interact with and learn more about specifying natural stone. In addition to materials for indoor and outdoor use, Light School is key component of the show. Here, leading manufacturers will demonstrate the relationship between light and surfaces, as well as showcasing the latest architectural lighting products and innovations in lighting technology. Light Talks, a series of sessions supported by the Institution of Lighting Professionals and collated by Rebecca Weir from Lightbout.IQ, will underpin this knowledge sharing. www.surfacedesignshow.com

Brand new surfaces added to the dp-limitless collection by Decorative Panels Lamination Autumn 2019 marked the launch of three new additional ranges to further enhance the stocked dplimitless Collection available from Elland-based Decorative Panels Lamination – and alongside striking products from Pfleiderer and Rehau are out of the ordinary surfaces from Voice Tec. Taking its offer to more than 90 laminates from Pfleiderer’s DST collection, the new additions to Decorative Panels dp-limitless range include striking unicolours like Orange, Signal Red and Gentian Blue. Grain embossed unicolours have also been added along with

FP315_Pages.indd 15

embossed woodgrains like Milano Walnut, Ponderosa Pine, Bordeaux Oak, St Tropez Oak and Zebrano. Unlike traditional bonding techniques which use cold pressed Emulsion Adhesives, dp-lamination bonds the Laminate to the substrate using a high performance PUR adhesive. Not only does this give a higher glue line strength, it offers the additional benefits of being waterproof with excellent low and high temperature performance. Laminate bonded in this way arguably has all round superior qualities when compared to other methods.

The new Pfleiderer products are available in laminated board size of 3050 x 1300 x 15mm, or 18mm MDF, and 2440 x 1220mm dp-lite hollowcore in variety of thicknesses and quantities from just one board. Next to be launched was the Rehau Rauvisio Crystal range – a collection of on-trend surface materials suitable for both furniture and interior wall cladding applications. Rauvisio Crystal combines the visual appeal of glass with the uncomplicated processing properties of an acrylic, and it comes with the added advantage of being 10 times more break resistant than real glass and half the weight. It’s also light, UV, scratch and impact resistant. Rehau’s Rauvisio Crystal décors – Conglomerato Chiaro, Conglomerato Scuro, Marmo Toscana, Marmo Romano, Marmo Bianco, Marmo Nero and Ruggine – have all been added to the dp-limitless offer and all the designs are available in gloss and

matt finishes. All are available laminated on 2800 x 1300 x 15mm MDF and in quantities as low as a single sheet. For a seamless look, matching edgebanding is available directly from Rehau. If you’re looking for a finish that’s very different, you’re sure to find inspiration in a new collection of Voice Tec acrylic textured surfaces that’s been added to the dplimitless range under the Textured Surfaces category. Decorative Panels Lamination has launched six 1.4mm thick patterns that are supplied in a white matt finish for recoating with a universal 1mm backing sheet, if required. Launched by dp-lamination at the Surface & Materials Show in October, Voice Tec’s Loop, Cactus, Diamantino, Italian Plank, Juta and Giglio are deeply textured and very tactile. Taking inspiration from flowers and bark as well as metals, weaves and abstract patterns, these totally unique finishes are ideal for any custom project, and the surface can be used either uncoated or with an over lacquer. It can be painted or lacquered using acrylic, polyurethane or water-based finishes, it’s resistant to weather and UV rays and can be processed using normal woodworking tools and machinery. Recoatable edging is also available. If you need a design creating to your own specification, Voice Tec will even do that for you and Decorative Panels Lamination will apply it to 3050 x 1300 x 15mm MDF panels. Decorative Panels Lamination will be showcasing all of its new designs at The Surface and Design Show in February. For more information on these three additions, contact Decorative Panels Lamination. 01484 658341 www.decorativepanels.co.uk

16 SURFACE DESIGN SHOW PREVIEW

Lathams launch Demo Zone at SDS2020 Many people see James Latham as simply a timber supplier and after 262 years in the business you can see why! However, with this year’s ‘How Well Do You Know Us’ campaign, the leading timber and panel products distributor has been broadening the awareness of its entire product range, from the very latest decors, melamines, laminates and veneers, through to solid surfaces, natural acrylic stone, thermoformable plastics, and more. And at this year’s Surface Design Show, Latham’s stand (208) will be taking this one step further. As well as featuring all the new and exclusive product ranges from its supplier partners, it will also be adding two elements to the stand that customers have said they wanted to see –demonstrations and interaction. Stuart Devoil, group head of marketing, James Latham, explained, “In the Demo Zone, visitors will be invited to take a seat at a counter in front of a specially constructed ‘demo booth’ and choose from a selection of product samples displayed in front of them. “Once they have chosen, they will pass the sample to our operative behind the counter, who will then undertake a demo of thermoforming, shaping, sublimation, coating or whatever is suitable for the chosen material. “They will then be handed the sample to take away with them, but will also receive a token and an invite to come up to our private showroom – suite 301 – where they can enjoy a free drink and try the process themselves – whilst also having the opportunity to browse our greater range and consult with our specialists. “In the interactive zone, visitors will be encouraged to take a selection of the 250 A4 samples we’ll have on display, and form their own mood board by sticking them to a large, 4m x 3m magnetic wall, mixing and matching until they have their perfect colour/texture/décor combo.” “We’ll then photograph the mood board and post it on our Instagram, Pinterest and other social channels, for other designers to check out. Is it inspiration, or competition? We’ll leave that up to you to decide … “All in all, this insight led approach is designed to bring greater interaction with our design focused customers, whilst also displaying the huge and diverse array of products we can provide. We hope to see you there on stand 208! “ 0116 257 3415 www.lathamtimber.co.uk

18 NEWS

The year just gone undoubtedly proved to be a very successful partnership between J & C O’Meara and the AES Group, resulting in numerous installations throughout the UK.

Successful 2019 for J & C O’Meara and AES Group partnership bodes well for the future Starting in January 2019, Liverpool-based shopfitter Woodbuzz placed an order for a new heavy-duty AES Extreme 2132 automatic jumbo-sized nesting line. This machine has a 3200 x 2100mm working capacity and is equipped with a HSD 9 Kw router head, 12 position rotary tool changer, HSD face drilling and twin 250m3 Becker vacuum pumps. The machine can carry 25 x 18mm jumbo boards on the lift table, can load, nest and offload automatically and automatically clean the bed before loading the next board. This high-speed machine has a linear speed in the X and Y axis of 70m/min and has an easy to use Osai HMI. Woodbuzz benefited from J & C O’Meara’s predelivery training program which is always based

around individual requirements. They were able to learn about the functions and operation using its stock machine along with software training using existing CAD drawings made in Autocad, converting and using Alphacam as the CAM. After using the machine for just three months, MD Don Fenwick says: “I don’t know how we got by without it.” This set the tone for what turned out to be a very successful year working in partnership with the AES Group, resulting in the sale of several CNC machines throughout the UK. One of the most popular machines to be sold was the AES Sirius 950m through feed CNC drilling machine equipped with a 5.5Kw router head. This machine has the HSD drill box with ten face drills, can drill to all four sides and has

LATEST UPDATES

a grooving saw in the X direction. This is still a highly productive machine with linear speeds in the X and Y direction up to 70m/min and is the smallest machine produced by the AES group using its ‘know how’ from its larger machines to construct the Sirius, which really is a must have for anyone producing cabinets. Also delivered this year was the first of the all new AES Raptor Ultra CNC nesting machines. This was delivered to DT Solutions which is an experienced company already running several various branded CNC machines. DT Solutions’ requirements were quite particular, based on experience and knowledge accumulated over many years and the machine needed to be suitable for processing not only MDF and MFC but also various Plastics and

AES Sirius 950 through feed CNC drilling machine

Furniture & Joinery Production has learnt a number of news updates from AES which should prove of interest to readers. • The new Vacuboost – this is an ‘intelligent’ vacuum system where the machine has two vacuum pumps.... one to work across the whole bed and a second one which uses intelligent software to follow the router head and give dedicated 100% of it’s power to the zone in which it is cutting. According to AES, this system gives 10x the hold compared to the standard vacuum and is of course of major benefit to those cutting small parts and those cutting at higher speeds. • The AES Vega 5X uses the HSD Infinity head. This unit offers endless movements in the A and C axis and can therefore offer endless machining without the need for the cutter to withdraw and unwind before cutting again. • AES has now launched its new series of Ultra machines, which have been designed to not only give a more modern, sleek appearance but also can work at even faster linear speeds for reduced processing times. • The new AES Flexa Pro has recently been launched which offers a high quality, high speed flatbed CNC nesting machine with tool changer and prices starting from £39,995. This is aimed at the small to medium user who may be tempted by so-called ‘cheap’ deals.

composites including TRESPA and HPL. The machine delivered had an upgraded 12Kw router head, an HSD drill box giving 10 face drills, end drilling to all four sides and a grooving saw. The machine was also equipped with the new and innovative vacuboost system which is an intelligent vacuum system having twin 250m3 Becker vacuum pumps, one holding the complete board in place, the other using

intelligent software and following to whichever zone the router head is working. AES says this offers up to 10 times the vacuum against standard systems. TeraBlack from Titus is much more than a colour option With a close eye on emerging trends in the international furniture market, cabinet hardware expert Titus has developed TeraBlack versions of many of its most popular products, including its hugely successful T-type hinges. The new Tera (Titus Enhanced Resistance Application) versions feature an exceptionally attractive nonreflective dark grey finish, which not only retains its superlative appearance throughout its working life but also offers enhanced resistance to corrosion. “At Titus, we put a lot of effort into monitoring developments in the furniture sector and recently we’ve seen a growing demand for matte black cabinet hardware,” says Phil Beddoe General Manager at Titus UK. “We weren’t satisfied, however, with the idea of responding by simply offering another colour option – we wanted to offer a market leading solution that combined a visually appealing dark matt finish with genuine and valuable product benefits. And, drawing on our unique expertise in cabinet hardware development and manufacture, that’s exactly what we’ve done with the new TeraBlack versions of our products.” Particularly well suited to applications in high-end premium kitchen furniture, Titus TeraBlack products fully meet the requirements of designers and consumers looking for unobtrusive yet attractive cabinet hardware. They have highly uniform surfaces and a velvet feel that complements their quality and enhances consumer appeal. AES’ high performance yet affordable CNC solutions ideal for a wide range of applications Established in 1989, the AES Group has evolved to become a global supplier of one of the most comprehensive ranges of heavy duty, high quality industrial CNC machines. The strengths of the AES CNC machines can be quite clearly seen in the construction of the frames, which allow every machine to have a high positioning and processing speed to allow maximum

productivity. These machines generally weigh more than most to easily absorb positioning speeds which start at 70m/min and are built to ensure long term reliability and accuracy. “If you were to strip down an AES machine, you would see that only the frame and assembly takes place in their manufacturing plant of over 170,000 sq ft in Bursa, Turkey,” explains J & C O’Meara MD

Carl O’Meara, “and all the working parts are from the world’s highest quality – branded sources including Becker Vacuum pumps, HSD router and drill heads, Yasakawa inverter drives, THK linear guides, Schmaltz vacuum pod and consoles, Osai controllers etc. Quality process Every one of the 300 machines produced every year goes through a number of stringent and rigorous

quality checks and procedures to ensure every machine meets or exceeds customer expectation. “Every AES machine comes complete with industry leading Alphacam CAD/CAM software, starting with Essential 2D which can be upgraded to further packages depending upon customer requirements and of course allowing every customer the possibility to ‘grow’ with the machine,” explains Carl. Door production With a choice of three axis and five axis machines, AES has several solutions depending upon customer requirements. One of the most popular choices is the AES Vega Evo which has a 9Kw router head and double sided 5.5Kw dedicated horizontal router head to machine pockets for locks and recesses for hinges. The easy-to-use AES door macro allows one-off programming in minutes, which include final sizing of the door blank, machining of locks, hinges, keyway, handle hole, rebates and eurogrooves. Spy holes and cut outs for letterbox and vision panels can also be added with ease.

AES Sirius 950M CNC Drilling Machine With Router This machine is a "must have" for anyone producing kitchen or bedroom furniture. Cutting and edging are always a relatively quick and easy process, but assembly is where problems can arise when using manual methods where both speed and accuracy can be open to question. The AES Sirius allows you to accurately and efficently process panels ready for assembly.

AES Extreme 1632 CNC Nesting Machine The AES Extreme machines are available as a "stand alone" machine or as a through feed nesting line. All machines are heavily engineered using quality branded components and with linear speeds of 70 m/min to ensure efficiency, durability and productivity. The machine is supplied with alphacam CAD/CAM software.

AES Vega Evo 1332 Door and Panel Machine This machine is the ideal multi-function CNC machining centre, whether processing door blanks or domestic or office furniture. The machine is equipped with two working zones, an eight position linear tool change, can face and end drill and has a dedicated horizontal router head to allow mortising of locks and recessing for hinges. Pro to the stand alone Super Nova to the heavy duty Extreme and Raptor Ultra machines – which can be supplied as automated line machines – AES has possibly one of the largest series of flatbed/ nesting machines available. As manufacturers’ requirements – and indeed budgets – are different, AES has a range of machines to suit most industrial requirements with each series of machine having the choice of several bed sizes depending upon maximum size sheet to be cut. Drilling The AES Sirius is a throughfeed drilling machine, again offering the traditional heavy-duty rugged structure and using all quality, branded components. This machine has the option of a router and also the option of a sixposition toolchanger, giving it large machine capabilities in a smaller space. The impressive Vega five axis machine is the stand-alone solution for modular furniture or pfor the rocessing of door blanks and is available with a dedicated horizontal router head and C axis.

Training One of the country’s leading woodworking machinery dealers, J & C O’Meara is well placed to offer advice on the best software solution to allow CNC machines to be integrated into any existing working environment, whether a customer is new to CNC or even if a third-party CAD/CAM package is already being used. J & C O’Meara’s highly experienced team is also available

to offer practical advice on machining styles, strategies and automation. “Our training is not only about showing the function of the software but taking a customer from design through to production and includes pre-delivery training, training on site, along with on-going training,” concludes Carl. 01704 893 109 www.ukwoodworkingmachinery. co.uk

Lohmeyer technology from Ney Lohmeyer machines have been sold very successfully in mainland Europe for a number of years. Peter Lohmeyer began working with China several years ago. Having spent most of his career within the Homag Group, his engineering team has developed its products to a very high standard. “Focusing on CNC routers, machining centres, beam saws and high-specification edgebanders, the brand has now come of age,” explains Ney’s Mike Dunning. “The machines are manufactured in one of the largest and most technically advanced factories in the world.” The standard components are sourced from the world’s leading suppliers with every aspect of design and development overseen by the German specialists. What does this mean for the end user? Quality, durability, high engineering standards and the assurance that spare parts are held either in the UK or Germany for immediate despatch.

workshop,” says Mike. “They’ve been designed for quick installation and fuss-free operation. We stock standard parts and have next day delivery available, so servicing and aftercare is as straightforward as the machines themselves.” Edgebanders The range of edgebanders from Lohmeyer all feature high feed speeds and a range of working units designed to meet the demands of flexibility and high production volumes. Whisper cut pre-milling blocks have a capacity of up to 60mm. All machines have two end-trim saws which permit feed speeds of up to 26m/ minute whilst minimising the space between panels. For further information, contact Mike Dunning at Ney. 0247 630 8100 www.ney.co.uk

Beam saws Lohmeyer offers two ranges of beam saw. The entry level machine BAZ 525 IQ has a cut height of 80mm with a cutting length of 3300, 3800 or 4400mm, whilst the NP series offers a cut height of 120mm and is designed and built for high production levels. CNC Lohmeyer’s BAZ range has six models available in three bed sizes: 8 x 4ft, 10 x 5ft, and Jumbo sheet if required. “Lohmeyer is a great fit for Ney because the entry level machines offer high quality German engineering to the smaller

DAMS Furniture celebrates more than 30 years partnering with Homag UK DAMS Furniture began life in Liverpool in 1967 as the Dictating & Adding Machine Services company repairing business machines. The company then started selling filing cabinets which led to an opportunity to supply office desks to Liverpool Council. Unable to find any suitable products, DAMS made the decision to manufacture the desks themselves! “From this acorn,” explains DAMS Furniture’s managing director, Chris Scott, “has grown a £44m turnover business employing just shy of 300 people and occupying a quarter of a million square feet of manufacturing and storage space. As the company continued to grow and became more successful, we began investing in top end woodworking machinery to enable us to produce high quality ranges of office furniture. “Our relationship with Homag began over 30 years ago and has developed into a strong and extremely successful partnership. As the leading global woodworking machinery brand, Homag sets the benchmark for the rest of the industry. Its heritage shines through its products; German engineering skills are world renowned and you can clearly see how this manifests itself with

Homag equipment – it really is in a class of its own.” The need for a new edge bander and beam saw “Over the years we have made a considerable investment in Homag equipment which has all, without exception, performed reliably and delivered excellent quality results. Consequently, when it came to changing our 15-year-old edge banders, Homag was top of our list for a suitable replacement. “Despite our faith in the Homag brand, however, it wouldn’t have been prudent if we didn’t carry out due diligence to ensure we get the right solution for the business. After all, advanced equipment like this is a significant investment. “The choice for high performance doublesided edge banders is fairly narrow and after researching the market we opted to order an Edgeteq D-610 double sided edge bander from Homag with a feeding table and rotary system. This new edge bander underpins quality and capacity for DAMS.

“We elected to have a semi-automatic feeding table that queues up the panels and a rotary system that rotates the panels to the correct orientation as required. This helps the operators keep up with the speed of the machine and delivers maximum throughput capacity.” Making sure the new saw cuts the mustard “The decision on which beam saw to get was less straightforward. We evaluated a number of brands and carried out site visits around the UK to see various solutions in action. The requirement for a new saw came about because of a shift in customer demand towards a wider choice of products and smaller batch size production. This meant the need to cut high volumes of different-sized panels quickly and accurately using a variety of different board types. “Long-term, we not only wanted the right beam saw, but one that would also integrate with an automated storage system that could manage a large stock of boards and deliver them to the saw automatically as and when required.

This need narrowed down our search and after visiting Homag in Germany and carrying out site visits there too, we were convinced that the Sawteq B-400 with an integrated lifting table was the ideal solution for DAMS. “Not only is this model a high quality and extremely efficient beam saw, it will also integrate seamlessly with the new automated Homag board storage system that we will be installing soon.” Edgeteq D-610 double-sided edge bander from Homag The Edgeteq D-610 profiLine edge bander formats, profiles and edges furniture workpieces on two sides in a single run. It is ideal for producing medium to large series at a high performance level with few changeovers. The precise edge processing produces first class results which are enhanced by the enclosed frame design that delivers vibrationfree operation with optimum trimming patterns. In terms of edging technology the Edgeteq D-610 is extremely flexible, offering the use of hot melt glue, PU or zero-joint technology. It also features optimised chip and offcut disposal which helps minimise machine downtime and reduces servicing requirements.

Sawteq B-400 with integrated lifting table The Sawteq B-400 is a high-performance saw for processing larger volumes of panels in finish cut quality. The saw works reliably and precisely at high speed and delivers high throughput.

Edgeteq D-610 with feeding table and rotary system

It features a high saw blade projection which provides flexibility for cutting books or individual panels. With this model a high degree of customisation means the saw can be configured exactly to requirements. DAMS Furniture specified the model with an integrated lifting table which automatically feeds boards, thus speeding up the production processes by a considerable margin. This is particularly beneficial for frequently cut panels made from the same material or those cut in books. Even in standard trim, the Sawteq B-400 offers the full range of technical features and can be used either as a standalone machine, interlinked with other machines or as part of a production line. Equipped with the latest CADmatic 5 control software, the Sawteq B-400 is extremely energy efficient thanks to intelligent ecoPlus technologies and is intuitive to operate, ergonomic and low maintenance. Support and training that deliver results Chris Scott again: “Throughout the specifying and purchasing processes we were supported extremely well by both Jon Lawman (Homag’s area manager) and the entire Homag team in

FP315_Pages.indd 35

the UK and Germany. “Homag’s after-sales service is first class with excellent technical support which has developed considerably in recent years. Their external diagnostics, spare parts service and engineer support for maintenance are excellent, mirroring the superb German engineering of the machinery. “Training on the machinery was very thorough. For the edge bander it was all done on site. For the saw, however, we sent three of our team to Germany for several days’ training two weeks prior to the installation of the equipment. In addition, the Homag UK engineers trained our operators onsite to ensure that we maximise the machine’s potential going forward. “In terms of the impact the new edge bander and saw have had on the business, we’ve seen a significant uplift in output, a reduction in direct labour costs, lower wastage and a general overall efficiency improvement. We’ve also seen a quality enhancement, as we’re achieving a much better edge quality using the new Homag machine,” concludes Chris. Gallito fume extraction for Ultrimax When paint shop support specialist Ultrimax Coatings Ltd relocated to new premises it had its new facility fitted out with an array of Gallito fume extraction equipment. As a supplier of Gallito equipment to its own customers, Ultrimax was obviously more than happy to have the same quality products installed for its own use. Ultrimax Coatings is a familyowned business that has been serving the paint and coating industry since 1973 and, as Managing Director Giles Hoare explains: “It’s the continued support we receive from our loyal and growing customer base that’s made the move to our new premises a viable reality. The new facility provides us with three times the floorspace which will help us to achieve our goals for future growth and improved customer service, and it has enabled us to develop a bespoke production area.” Although paint shop consumables and spray equipment have become a significant part of

the company’s business, Ultrimax is primarily a manufacturer of protective coatings and highperformance industrial paint systems. In addition to its ownbranded products, the company is also a distributor of Jotun Protective Coating products, and has long-term partnering relationships with the likes of 3M, Mirka and Devilbiss. As well as a new production area, the increased storage space now at its disposal allows Ultrimax to hold large quantities of stock lines ready for immediate dispatch. Acquired in 2019 by Filtermist International, the Gallito brand itself was also established over 40 years ago. All Gallito equipment continues to be produced at the company’s manufacturing facility near Wetherby, West Yorkshire, and the equipment supplied for Ultrimax’s new premises was installed by Gallito engineers. The scope of supply included bespoke Fume Extraction Hoods, a Paint Kitchen, dismantling and re-

installation of a Bench Booth that Gallito had previously installed at the old premises, along with design and installation of all internal and external ductwork. A major consideration for the system design was the fact that extraction ductwork would not be permitted to exit directly through the roof of the building. Drawing on the extraction system design and installation expertise available within the Filtermist organisation, the ductwork was configured to exit through the back wall of the building, with vertical stacks neatly installed in a very narrow space to the rear, and topped off with

FP315_Pages.indd 37

Swedish cowls. Internally, the key feature of the installation is a custom-designed twin extraction hood, with a central dividing wall. At over 5m in length, and almost 2.5m deep, the completed structure covers a working area of approximately 13m2 and provides a working height of 2.3 metres. The hooded construction effectively comprises two rows of five individual hoods, manufactured from folded galvanised steel panels, and each connected to the main 560mm diameter extraction ductwork. Fumes are drawn from the main duct by an internally-sited, ATEXrated centrifugal fan, and expelled to atmosphere via the external ductwork stacks. This large unit is divided vertically by a galvanised steel wall to create two identical, adjacent work areas; allowing concurrent production of different coatings with no cross-contamination. Each side of the dividing wall provides fume extraction for a number of production processes and the work area is illuminated with integral fluorescent lighting. Transparent PVC strip curtains at each end of the unit allow clear visibility around the entire working area. Gallito Paint Kitchens are designed to provide a safe environment for storing, mixing, thinning and blending paints, and are individually manufactured to meet customers’ specific needs. To minimise VOC emissions, Ultrimax actively work on reducing the use of solvents in their products and, as Filtermist’s sales engineer, Mike Lodge, explained: “For more demanding situations, Gallito Paint Kitchens can be double-skinned and insulated but, at Ultrimax, a single-skin, galvanised steel panel construction was sufficient for

their needs. We laser cut and fold the steel sheet to ensure accurate alignment of the finished panels, and an airtight seal is achieved by the simple application of sealant during construction.” Clean air enters the room by way of an inlet filter in the ceiling, and a roof-mounted extraction fan completes a full air change every minute; with extracted air being discharged to atmosphere via dedicated ductwork. Internally, the Gallito unit is fitted with 500mm deep steel workbenches along each side, leaving a central work area which is accessible from either end via self-closing, doubleskinned and glazed doors. A further bespoke extraction hood was installed above a section of standard workbench to remove any noxious emissions resulting from the charging of aerosol containers. The hood is 800mm deep and covers a 2.4 metre length of the worktop. The open front face is 1.2 metres high, and clear strip curtaining again provides good visibility as well as offering some protection to the work area. The project at Ultrimax’s new facility was completed with the installation of a 1500mm wide Gallito Dry Filter Bench-type Spray Booth that had been dismantled and transported from the old building. Gallito engineers installed the re-built booth and configured new extraction ductwork to discharge at the rear of the building. Gallito is a Filtermist brand and part of the Absolent Group which operates globally, through subsidiary companies, manufacturing products for collecting oil mist, oil smoke and dust within almost all industrial sectors. 01952 290500 www.filtermist.co.uk

Homag improves reliability and throughput speed for Mobili Office Established in 1996, Mobili Office Ltd designs and manufactures a range of innovative office furniture. With a group turnover in excess of £15 million, Mobili produces a range of seating, desking and storage for the complete office package. As aging machinery started to fail, Mobili Office invested in two Homag Centateq P-110 CNC machines. Steve Holyer, production manager, explains: “Our existing CNC machine was very old, it was a 1999 model and it was simply at the end of its life. This caused us manufacturing issues as it had started to become unreliable. “In addition to this, our CNC drill no longer fitted our production

requirements. When we bought it, we were handling a lot of mass production work but the market demand has changed and we are producing more bespoke pieces at smaller quantities. We needed to invest in technology that would allow us to remain versatile and flexible within a competitive market.” Finding a suitable replacement “When looking for a solution to replace our CNC and drilling machines, we considered the three machinery manufacturers who we had previously purchased equipment from, including Homag. “Our production facility is now mainly Homag machinery and

all our equipment is covered with Homag service packages. Therefore, it was important to us that our new equipment would also be covered by a service plan. “We’ve never had an issue with Homag servicing and they always get us up and running again if we encounter problems. This was another key factor which led us to contacting Homag’s area sales manager, Matt Long, to discuss a solution. “After productive discussions with Matt, we worked out a deal to purchase two Homag Centateq P-110 CNCs. Both machines have an identical specification and tool set-up so that everything is fully interchangeable. The

CNC machines use three-axis technology and we included the future package for larger drill heads. Our tools selection also included the router heads and sniping saw, which can move through 90°, as we do a lot of grooving, rebating and trimming.” Faster processing of large panels “One of the key features of the CNC machines for us is the size of chipboard panel they can handle. As our work is so varied, the machines need to be able to handle everything from drawer fronts right up to desktops – which at their largest can be up to 3 x 1.5 metres. “Our old machines weren’t

capable of handling such large panels and this was limiting as our need to handle bigger panel sizes is increasing. One of our products, a seating pod, uses panels so large that it used to take five passes to complete but now it’s reduced to just one pass. This is obviously saving us a lot of time and allows for faster processing. We would have bought the machines regardless, however the larger bed sizes is definitely an added bonus for us.”

Homag’s easy to use woodWOP software system makes machine operation simple

Ease of use with Homag software “One of the other reasons we turned to Homag was because the machine software is so simple and easy to use. We have several Homag machines in our facility and so our operators are already familiar with it. They find woodWOP incredibly simple to use and that was a big bonus of purchasing the two Homag Centateqs.

“Our designated CNC operators attended a three day Homag training course at its headquarters in Castle Donington. One of our members of staff is trained to handle our Homag BAZ system and so already had a great knowledge of the software. Our other colleague, however, had only used our previous CNC which wasn’t a Homag machine. Despite this, he still found it extremely easy and quick to pick up.” A smooth installation with highclass aftercare support “We enjoy dealing with Homag mainly because we always find they meet or exceed our expectations. The installation process went extremely smoothly. We removed the old machines before the Homags arrived, so it was a relatively straightforward installation. The bonus was that the installation was actually completed ahead of schedule, taking less time than anticipated. From our point of view, that was fantastic as it meant we could start production quicker. “We’ve not had any issues with the CNC machines since they’ve been installed – they are so easy and simple to operate. If we ever do have any queries about servicing and parts, it’s always easy to speak to someone at Homag. With our other Homag machinery, if we’ve ever needed a part, we’ve always used the superb Homag eParts system. “It’s a very useful system, you can print off drawings and stand in front of the machine with them to identify which part you are looking for. On the odd occasion we haven’t been able to find what we need, the Homag spare parts team is always quick to help and easy to reach on the phone,” concludes Holyer. 42 SANDING & ABRASIVES

DEOS Delta is flawless from corner to corner Mirka has expanded its impressive Direct Electric Orbital Sander (DEOS) range with the addition of the DEOS Delta. Its ergonomic and innovative iron shape design allows users to access hard to reach areas easily and efficiently, while reducing the stress on arms and hands, and delivering a flawless smooth finish from corner to corner. The Delta’s low 10cm profile ensures it is closer to the surface at any angle, allowing for increased control of the sanding process, even during long periods of use. Weighing less than 1kg, there is less risk of arm fatigue. The sander also incorporates a powerful brushless motor and 3mm orbit for more effective removal of stock, while keeping vibrations at a low level to minimise the risk of HAVs. Additionally, when the DEOS Delta is combined with Mirka’s net abrasives and a dust extraction unit, it provides a consistent scratch pattern and a dust-free work environment to work in.

Pete Sartain, national sales manager industrial of Mirka UK, says: “The R&D team is in constant communication both internally and externally to understand what the market is looking for, so this addition is the next phase in the evolution of the DEOS product range. The addition of new Mirka DEOS Delta meets a gap in the market as users are looking for a lightweight, powerful and versatile delta sander and we are confident customers will benefit from its technological, health & safety and performance attributes from its first use.” www.mirka.com/uk

Easier sanding of narrow gaps A new extension pad to enhance the versatility of the Mirka DEOS 353 CV 81x 133 has been launched. The pad’s overhang will enable users to sand further into corners and hard-to-reach areas, while delivering the high-quality smooth finish synonymous with the DEOS range. The new pad is versatile enough to handle multiple applications, but has been specifically developed for sanding window shutters and sash windows, which have traditionally been tricky to reach with a normal orbital sander because the slats are narrow and difficult to access. The Mirka DEOS is the only electric orbital sander on the market that has been optimised for net abrasives by incorporating more than 45 holes in the pad. When the tool is combined with Mirka’s net and paper abrasives, it offers an impressive scratch pattern and a dust-free work environment. Its innovative features incorporate a powerful brushless motor, which provides a high power-to-weight ratio when in use. Pete Sartain, national sales manager – industrial of Mirka UK, says: “As a business, we want to provide the right tool for the job at hand. Our R&D team has listened to what customers require for jobs they are working on, which has led to the design and development of the new extension pad. We believe this pad will increase the versatility of the DEOS 353 by making it easier for users to reach difficult, hard-to-reach areas, making sanding narrow gaps a thing of the past.” www.mirka.com/uk

46 UPDATES

Another twelve months of success for Salvamac – a reality that saw a turning point in 2019.

Following a year of strong growth, Salvamac looks forward to a positive 2020 “This year our growth was above 50%,” says Ziemowit Dolkowski, co-founder of Salvamac, “a success that concerned not only traditional and by now consolidated products that had brought us a few years ago to give life to a dynamic productive reality in Poland. “A reality that initially saw a catalogue focused on the Classic 40, 50 and 60 semi-automatic and manual cross-cutting saws, which require limited investment but are a decisive step towards a faster, safer and more efficient production,”

FP315_Pages.indd 46

explained Ziemowit. “A hard core to which we have added and are still adding new aggregates that significantly increase the performance of these undoubtedly ‘simple’ machines, also by means of intelligent loading and unloading systems, as well as automations that allow even small businesses or sophisticated craftsmen to move towards a completely new perspective. A true evolution!” Among the aggregates launched in 2019 by Salvamac is the electronic stop Salvastop – a system that electronically manages the stopping and positioning of the boards or profiles to be cut, regardless of the material, with high speed and absolute precision, thanks to a state-of-theart brushless electronic motor.

Furthermore, the mechanics have been designed to not require any maintenance over time, while guaranteeing a high degree of robustness and precision. Salvastop can be installed on the Classic 40, Classic 50 and Classic 60 models, transforming entry level models into real semi-automatic cutting centres, made even more interesting by the possibility of interfacing them with the management software already available at the company. An example of how the concepts of Industry 4.0 can also be applied on stand-alone machines, which offer important performances with low investments. It should be noted that the Salvastop can also be installed on other machines, adapting it to all those applications where it is necessary to provide measuring and cutting operations in an extremely effective way. “It was an extremely positive season, we have achieved and even exceed our goals in a shorter time than we had expected,” says Christian Salvador. “Our products met with great interest in all those markets that want to make each

phase of the production cycle faster and more efficient, starting from the cross-cutting.” A journey that at Ligna 2019 has become even richer and more complete with the presentation of the new innovative pusher optimising saw, Salvapush 2000. “Optimising the cutting of the wood to the individual requirements of our customers is part of our DNA,” says Christian, “and this is just the beginning. We have created a very flexible and cutting-edge technical solution that allows, for a reasonable price, to optimise a single board with defects and qualities or package of boards using the most advanced technologies.” The Salvapush 2000 comes with a brand new version of software that allows anyone to manage it in a simple and complete way like a smartphone, with a website graphic and all the practicality of setting data of a large touch screen, in digital communication between all the electronic components. New exclusive mechanical solutions are also present both for the cutting system and for that of the pusher, solutions that are demonstrating all their potential and flexibility at the customers where the

FP315_Pages.indd 47

machines work. The year 2019 was also a breakthrough year for the new division – Air & Painting. Due to Salvamac’s entry into a reality present in the market for over 30 years, being always directed towards high quality products, it is already conquering positions on various markets, with an offer that – staying true to the

Salvamac philosophy – ranges from the painting booths, equipped with innovative sandwich panels to provide increased strength and devices that greatly reduce consumption, to the ‘do it clean’ sanding benches. In addition to the Painting division, which includes perfect solutions for companies of

different sizes and needs, Salvamac can offer what it describes as ultra robust and efficient portable vacuum cleaners, bag or cartridge filters, as well as complete customised systems. This is the mission of the Air division, all with the clear intention of making use of the great potential of the internet with more traditional sales and service systems, always focusing on what the customer really needs. The philosophy of Salvamac always looks towards evolution, as the two partners and friends say: “the world has changed, but that only means that it has become bigger and that it has different rules – there are many more open spaces than closed ones; the important thing is to drive looking forward and not in the rear-view mirror!” This is why it has already scheduled the launch of further products and innovations for 2020 that will break cover at Holz Handwerk in Nuremberg and then in the Xylexpo in Milan. The road to the future is clear: passion, hard work and trusting in ethical approach, thinking as a big company, but at the same time, being extremely fast, so as to move quickly and take every opportunity. www.salvamac.com

Another successful in house exhibition at VWM VWM Ltd enjoyed another positive in house event recently at its completely refurbished showroom, demonstration area and machinery training suite in Colne, Lancashire. Investing heavily in new and refurbished stock, with over 50 machines in the showroom and over 200 more in the warehouse for immediate delivery to the customer, a visit to VWM is worthwhile at any time, moreso during the company’s regular in house events. VWM’s sales director, Jason Varey, commented: “What a fantastic two days! This has been one of the best in house exhibitions we have ever had with a very wide range of new and used equipment being sold to both new and existing customers.

machines was far more than we expected,” points out Jason. “With machines being in stock, it meant the customers who bought machines at the exhibition could have them delivered and installed before Christmas or very shortly after the holidays.” With another in-house planned for spring 2020, it’s well worth getting along to see the full range of our products on display from VWM. 01282 870077 info@vwm.co.uk www.vwm.co.uk

“Our show room and demonstration area are full to bursting with new and refurbished classical machinery and CNC routers, which meant that customers could come and put the machines of their choice through their paces, resulting in a good number of machines being sold. “The CNC routers were continually running on standard- and customer-specific demonstrations with acrylics and wood products being produced. Our Vectric 2D Cut Pro software was also on demonstration to allow customers to understand the concept of CNC routing from concept to finished product, with an order placed for a standard Flex ECO machine and a Flex ECO Jumbo machine with 2100mm x 3100mm table and 12-station tool changer – interest in these

VPulse 500 solution provides efficient wheel dressing How metal-bonded diamond grinding wheels are dressed determines their removal rate and operating life. When they are dressed mechanically, the diamond grains partially lose their sharpness and break away easily. This results in only moderate grain protrusion, which does not allow the metal-bonded grinding wheel to be used at its optimum operating point. The solution of contactless spark erosion yields structure and retaining force in the diamond grains. Vollmer, the sharpening specialist based in Biberach, Germany, has now equipped its VPulse 500 wire erosion machine with additional functions to dress diamond grinding wheels using erosive methods. Another advantage of Vollmer’s technology is that using a hydrocarbon-based dielectric protects the wheel packages’ clamping systems from corrosion. “Metal-bonded diamond grinding wheels are not only increasingly being used in tool machining. To improve their removal rate and operating life, spark eroding is the recommended dressing method,” says Dr Stefan Brand, CEO of the Vollmer Group in Biberach. “At EMO Hannover 2019, we demonstrated for the first time how grinding wheels can be dressed using erosive methods with our VPulse 500 wire erosion machine.” Disadvantages of mechanical dressing The objective is to release the maximum output of metal-bonded grinding wheels. For a long time, these could not be used at their most effective operating point. One of the reasons is sub-optimal conditioning of the abrasive coating in manufacturing or re-profiling. In the past, this has often led to mechanical dressing methods being used. There are clear disadvantages to using mechanical dressing methods. For example, it is not possible to obtain the required grain

FP315_Pages.indd 50

protrusion that ensures a ‘cool grind’ and the required cutting ability of the coating, even though this is the precise advantage that the metal bond would support because of the high grain retention strength. In addition, the forces occurring during mechanical dressing are a further disturbance variable to the required accuracy of the grinding wheel contour. This requires great effort to monitor. High grain protrusion and precise contours Vollmer is now offering the functionality needed to profile metal-bonded grinding wheels on the VPulse500 wire erosion machine for the first time. With designed process engineering and specifically developed erosion parameters, Vollmer has been able to effectively kill two birds

with one stone. The tailored erosion process removes the metallic binder around the electrically nonconductive diamond grain, resulting in an optimum topography of the abrasive coating. More specifically, it means there is high grain protrusion, especially with diamond grains that are not already damaged while achieving a high grain retaining force. Depending on the binder and grain size, the obtained contour accuracy is plus/minus two microns. Eroding with corrosion protection Unlike other eroding processes, the VPulse 500 uses a hydrocarbon-based dielectric, meaning that the grinding wheel packages’ sensitive clamping systems do not require special protection. With its five-axis kinematics, the VPulse 500 automatically measures and erodes every diamond grinding wheel. Thanks to the fine eroding wire, even complex geometries can be machined on the grinding wheel in one set-up. Internal testing of the VPulse 500 at Vollmer has shown that, compared to mechanical methods, the operating life of metal-bonded grinding wheels can be improved significantly. In addition, the removal rate is significantly improved as a result of the openpored grinding wheel with grain-free regions. The VPulse 500 allows users to program how grinding wheels are dressed exactly as required. “Customers have the option of equipping the VPulse 500 with four different workpiece storage solutions, enabling up to 68 grinding wheel packages to be processed unmanned and round the clock,” says Dr Brand. “This is irrespective of whether companies are manufacturing or reprofiling diamond grinding wheels.” www.vollmer-group.com

Backing positive mental health in the workplace The UK’s leading independent hotel management company, RBH, has signed an employer pledge with Time to Change – cementing its support of positive mental health in the workplace. Time to Change is a growing social movement run by charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, which support people to open up about mental health problems. By signing, RBH is streamlining its employee support initiatives and challenging the way we all think and act about mental health in the workplace. The four core values RBH aims to uphold are acting with integrity, delivering operational excellence, having the ambition to continuously improve, and showing care. Embedded within these values is a culture where RBH is committed to positive employee wellbeing for everyone working within the diverse collection of over 45 branded and private label hotel properties under its management. To formalise this commitment further, RBH conducted a signing ceremony of the Time to Change pledge at Holiday Inn Express London – Earl’s Court. This included the launch of an action plan of activity that will help to break the silence that surrounds mental health in the workplace. As part of the plan, changes to ensure a

healthy work life balance and opportunities for development will be implemented and communicated to all employees, as well as open conversations about mental health support being actively encouraged. Hannah Elliott, Group culture and reward manager at RBH, said: “Our Executive Committee strongly believes that caring about our people and helping them develop with RBH, in turn creates a happier environment for everyone. “Our values are key to the way in which we operate our hotels and look after our people. They are fully aligned to the personal values of our senior team and are lived and breathed throughout the organisation every day. “Our vision is for all of us to make changes that can have an impact on our collective health and wellbeing at work and at home! We want all our teams to understand the importance of health and wellbeing and know how they can get involved and access the right tools and training to deliver this. “By implementing and committing to a mental health at work plan, we know it will enhance our already strong commitment to supporting our colleagues on all mental health issues.” RBH is a driving force in the hospitality industry and by signing Time to Change pledge, joins the

wide movement of over 450 organisations. Jo Loughran, Interim Director of Time to Change, said: “We know it can be hard to talk about mental health, which is why we’re supporting employers to open up; to talk and to listen. Too many people with mental health problems are made to feel isolated, ashamed and worthless, but with the right support, those of us with mental health problems can recover and have equal opportunities in all areas of life. Everyone’s attitude makes a difference and it’s fantastic to see organisations like RBH taking the lead. “Many leading employers have found that making a strategic commitment to the mental wellbeing of their workforce not only benefits their staff but also their bottom-line, improving productivity and staff retention. With one in six British workers experiencing mental illness it’s time for businesses to make a change and start creating more mentally healthy workplaces.” Time to Change is funded by the Department of Health, Comic Relief and the Big Lottery Fund. Set up to create a positive shift in public attitudes towards mental health problems, Time to Change supports communities, schools and workplaces to open up to mental health problems; to talk and to listen. www.time-to-change.org.uk.

Renolit Cubanit Grey Suedette Matt compliments an art deco style bathroom

In the build up to one of the busiest times of the year for home interior renovation projects, imitating distinctive interior styles from art deco, retro or even urban are tending to rise again. Any of these can be created by using grey as a background but mixing with stronger brighter colours or edgy new designs. Renolit has introduced three new items into its global stock range which can be included to offer fresh and imaginative ideas to homeowners. Renolit Alkoren Taupe Grey Suedette Matt (below) is a soft, muted colour ideal for use in kitchens, bedrooms and on other interior doors. It is a standard universal colour with a tint of warmth that can be used for neutral interior design. The Suedette Matt surface strengthens the appeal and durability with a desirable finish. Light grey tones complement warm woodgrains and blend with a palette of complementary colours to create a subtle room set. Alternatively, mixing the product with bold green colours and contemporary industrial designs creates a modern twist on everyday style. Taupe Grey Suedette Matt is matched to Egger U750 ST9. Renolit Covaren Woodstone Light Grey (top right) is an unusual composite design incorporating a linear woodgrain structure with a modern industrial concrete influence. The Woodstone design is a blend of horizontal strokes of cement, combined with a classic ash dĂŠcor. Produced in a mid-grey tone, subtle cathedrals give character to the overall design which is enhanced by a deep linear woodgrain texture to provide depth to this hybrid concept. Be creative with bold pops of colour such as Watermelon Supermatt and incorporate darker Onyx Grey Suedette Matt for a modern sleek design. Renolit Alkoren Cubanit Grey Suedette Matt (above) is a warm colour which is ideal for bathrooms and interior furniture. Timber business invests in fifth wood waste heater

HoffmannMay18.indd 1 FP315_Pages.indd 62

A market leader in timber engineering and construction has purchased a fifth wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology after experiencing the benefits of free waste disposal and heating. Walker Timber Engineering has been operating for over 150 years. Its Staffordshire manufacturing facility is based on an industrial estate built on an old airfield, and produces a wide range of products, including I-beam floors, roof trusses and timber frame buildings. The manufacturing operation is

disposal and creating free heating in the process.” The team at Timber Walker Engineering has been really impressed with how efficiently the heaters dispose of the wood waste, and are delighted with the service received from Wood Waste Technology. Andy explains: “Whilst we’re thrilled with the wood waste heater, an investment like this is about more than just the product itself. We’ve built up a really good relationship with the team at Wood Waste Technology. They are just as

split across a number of individual units on the 10-acre site, none of which have any permanent form of heating. As a result, the areas were hard to keep warm for the 140 on-site workers, with only halogen heaters to keep the cold at bay during the winter months. Assistant manager, Andy Kerr explains: “Our manufacturing facility works across a number of warehouses on our 10-acre site. Some of the units have sliding or roller doors each end, so are hard places to keep warm during winter. “Over the years, we’ve been investing in a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology for each unit, and the latest purchase is for our new production area. Investing in wood waste heaters makes good business sense, as our manufacturing process results in lots of wood offcuts, which we can now use to generate heat in each building, saving money on waste

reliable as their heaters, as they’re always there to help if we have any queries or need some after-sales service.” Kurt Cockroft says: “Whatever the primary reason for purchase – heat or waste disposal, a wood waste heater is a cost effective and productive solution for companies that generate waste wood, and the investment can pay back in less than 12 months.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com
