COMMENT I often write about global hotel and restaurant names that are successfully incorporating values more commonly associated with independent brands. Ensuring that the interior of each branch embraces and connects with its locality, bringing in produce from local suppliers, and generally creating a more individualistic feel and approach, these vast outfits are certainly tapping into consumer demand for a localised “experience”. But what of the independents? Where do they now fit in the spectrum, and how can they compete? This issue we delve into the challenges independent restaurants face within a competitive and unforgiving market, and try to understand how interior design can be used to boost their appeal and success rate. It’s surprising to discover how similar these hurdles are, however different the venue’s philosophy or clientele. Careful use of interior design to champion the dining experience and a remarkable use of a very compact space are indeed qualities shared by Marianne Lumb’s eponymous Notting Hill fine dining restaurant and Wine&Deli, a new casual dining concept from the founders of BRGR&Beer in Boxpark Croydon. In this issue, Ed Godrich of Godrich Interiors shares details of the soft, intimate scheme he and his team created for Marianne’s 14-cover restaurant, while Avocado Sweets duo Evros and Susie discuss the design and build process for Wine&Deli, and their strong belief in the far-reaching benefits independents can reap by investing in interior design. For Ian Haigh, founder of Central Design Studio, interior design expertise is no issue, but the business and financial aspects of running a restaurant are brand new. Alongside entrepreneur, fellow Crystal Palace resident and friend, Manish Utton-Mishra, Ian has launched deli/bistro Salt + Pickle in his local neighbourhood. John Evans, John Evans Interior Architecture & Design John Evans has over 30 years of industry experience, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts, as well as being a Member of the Chartered Society of Designers and an active member of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID). Here, he discusses his early influences, his architectural approach to interiors and the designs that resonate with him most.
How did you forge a career in the industry, and what was it that first drew you to the world of design? I was inspired by modern art, I have always been interested in modern art. I love the balance and composition that can evoke emotions in really well produced work. I had realised early on that I wasn’t going to make a living as an artist, so I looked for another outlet where I could use my creativity. I decided to open a design shop at the age of 23 offering interior design as a service. This side of the business proved to be successful and I was offered commissions to design exhibition stands for furniture companies, corporate offices, retail shops and large-scale residential projects etc. I eventually gave up the retail side of my business to concentrate fully on being an interior designer, working from a converted coach house next to my home. The business grew and we moved to Birmingham’s jewellery quarter where we are still based. Who was inspirational to you early in your career, and why? Mary Fox Linton was a big inspiration to me. I used to visit Decorex every year. In fact, I went
to the first one that was held and I have only missed one to date. I would visit Mary’s stand as a priority. Mary’s style was different to everyone else. At the time the fashion was very traditional, lots of chintz etc. Mary went against this – everything she did was modern and inspirational. Her work on hotels throughout the world reinforced my respect. It showed me that you could be different and successful. Years later I am pleased to say Mary is a good friend and I am still inspired by her drive and enthusiasm for design. How would you define your design approach? My design approach to any project is very architectural. I am interested in how spaces work, I feel the success of a good design starts with a successful layout. I like to start work on the plan working through it like the pieces of a jigsaw, altering spaces and placing furniture, making little sketches as the design starts to come together in my head. By the end of this process I have a complete picture of how the project will look.
My style, I would say is modern classic. I like my work to stand the test of time. Whilst I am interested in the fashion of the moment I don’t slavishly follow it as fashion is constantly moving. I prefer to take inspiration from the successful designs of the past and bring them up to date by using the inspirations of the day. Modern Art continues to be an overriding passion and inspiration. What would you say has been the biggest challenge for you in your career so far? Growing the business and handing over a lot of the responsibility of running the projects to my very capable team. As designers we are all control freaks. We want to control every element of our design which means hours thinking about the details, which to me are very important. As a practice grows, the reliance falls upon the team to make sure that every client gets the best design and service that is possible. Handing this responsibility over is very challenging but, on the flip side, very rewarding. Within our practice we have a great many variation of projects running at one time and I find that not working directly on one project at a time gives me the benefit of being able to oversee each project from a distance. I find this to be a real advantage as I can often see opportunities that the project designer has missed because as a designer you often get locked in to a way of doing things that makes it difficult to think differently – by stepping away things present themselves. What is your proudest achievement, as a designer, to date? Retaining long term clients, and achieving results that have been successful on many varied projects. Looking back at past projects and seeing that they have stood the test of time and they are still relevant today. I still think our greatest design achievements are to come. What are the most important creative developments in hospitality design that you have witnessed over the last 15 years or so, and looking forward, what challenges will designers need to create solutions for? The rise of Soho House. Founded in 1995 as a private members club for the creative industries, its growth has been impressive, since opening clubs across Europe and North America as well as restaurants, cinema, workspaces, spas, and bedrooms. Consumers are expecting more in every way, I think the internet has transformed the way we look for our experiences and hospitality is no different. When the website promises so much
through photos and videos of the selected destination, the reality has to live up to it. Please describe your top three interior spaces, from anywhere in the world, and tell us why they resonate with you. Dr Vanessa Brady OBE President SBID As the founder and president of the Society of British and International Design (SBID), Vanessa Brady is herself a multiple award-winning interior designer. Her portfolio of projects includes Hard Rock Café, Unilever, the Design Council, British Luxury Club, Sunseeker, His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei, private residences of numerous diplomats, among many others who seek out her high standards and design flair. Vanessa’s drive, commitment and notable achievements were appropriately recognised in 2014 when she was awarded an OBE and she regularly represents the interests of interior designers at the highest level, including the Bank of England, Houses of Parliament and with broadcasters such as Sky News.
What do you feel are the key challenges and constraints interior design professionals face today? One of the key challenges the industry is plagued with is the theft of ideas without consent or fee from peers and commercial pitches, as well as the unclear legal guidelines for contract terms between clients, supply of goods and design fees. How do you feel new entrants to the market can best equip themselves in order to survive within such a competitive field? Firstly, they need good advice; a good accounting system for monitoring cash flow and a legal system in place to check that project procurement is on time, compliant and on budget, as well as profitable. They need to make sure that their product is protected, if it were a factory or property you would normally be legally obliged to insure it, if it were a consumer purchase, there would be a variety of duties to perform so combined, if you follow these guidelines as a service provider and check balance measures, you will be less likely to be prosecuted. The biggest protection is security of an idea; protecting commercial ideas from
duplication is often a difficult task to prove but covert operations can be undertaken to gather evidence and avoid lengthy court cases. Finally you need a powerful and measurable marketing plan. Having the best product is not going to cover your living costs if you are not able to be found. Get your name out there and you will be successful with a professional presentation. You’ve consistently been a champion for enforcing intellectual property rights and compensating victims of theft – could you talk a little more about the SBID’s IP campaign? Abuse of IP rights is a problem that plagues the creative industry, cheats consumers and threatens the livelihoods of designers. The SBID IP campaign will be an awareness campaign in advance of establishing its international IP register where originators of design can register creative ideas from inception, which will create a platform for the provision of objective evidence in the instance of any IP infringement. The campaign aims to inform the current dialogue on IP being a messy issue and to notify victims that there can be action against perpetrators.
SBID has a corporate social responsibility to provide a route for all business enterprises to help protect the supply chain where it is vulnerable. The initiative will facilitate the seizure, prosecution and imprisonment of identified perpetrators of IP, as designers will have confidence and support to bring a criminal charge against the perpetrators. We have run numerous IP awareness campaigns over the years and along with our partner, TM-Eye, who have undertaken several hundred covert operations on IP theft. Unlike any other initiative or group, we will provide enforcement. This is quite a deterrent and criminal law is not time sensitive like civil law. We can prosecute anyone for any theft that has occurred at any time in any country under any law. How can design professionals use the tremendous pace and reach of digital technology to their advantage? Technology is invested and incorporated into most aspects of our personal and business lives. When SBID launched in 2009 it was just before the rise of social media. We had to keep up with the expansion but it also allowed us to build and connect with a multitude of parties that affect and are affected by the
SBID launched the Healthcare Council based on the growing ageing society and the lack of interest in healthcare design of products, design understanding by interior designers and the public. We then launched the Education Council and soon the Colour Council will be finally launched to complete the trio. We have worked out this for over a year and it will be huge. We have a global presence for this initiative and it will be of interest to manufacturers, designers and consumers. I don’t mean pretty things displayed in a glossy magazine, I mean serious science-based research on how colours perform in certain environments, how they impact on occupants’ behaviour and also on wellbeing. These environment guidelines will help designers in commercial environments, which is where SBID global membership has always been primarily focused. Finally, could you tell us a little about what we can expect from this year’s SBID awards? The awards have become a real destination; we had 204 people on the waiting list last year that we just couldn’t fit in. We thought about relocating or running two events but decided that we like the formula we have. We always add something, so this year we have a slightly different presentation – it’s always better than the year before, because that’s what we do – we innovate, we celebrate and we do it all commercially because we are a business destination. We also launch the annual 2017 world top 100 Design in each category and this will be a global directory of best destinations, restaurants, hospitals and products. It is a commercial launch so it is IP protected as is everything we do. It’s a great feeling to have gotten there finally and I have been itching to launch this year’s dual initiatives.

We are always launching new initiatives and functions, we like to be first to market and set the trend for competitors to follow. Following a trend is encouraged and is of course different to copying which we do not allow and will now be able to act upon. Our latest initiative is the completion of the trio of councils; in 2012

Sundukovy Sisters Design & Architecture Studio Irina and Olga Sundukovy’s studio opened in Moscow in 2004. Since then, they have established themselves by designing artful public space interiors in Moscow. Clients include restaurants by Alexander Rappoport, the Novikov Group, Ginza Project, Uilliam Lamberti, Anatoly Komm and other reputable and top-end Moscow restaurateurs. Today Sundukovy Sisters is a team of 40 professionals successfully working in public space interior projects in Russia and around the world, including 23 hotels, over 60 restaurants, bars and cafes, and over 70 offices, banks and shops.
Could you tell us a little about how the Sundukovy Sisters started? Was it always your ambition to open a design studio? We opened the studio in 2004 and there were five of us at the very beginning. Today we are a team of 50 professionals, and Sundukovy Sisters is one of the leading studios in designing public space interiors in Moscow and working with notable restaurateurs worldwide. We remember what triggered our interest in interior design very well. We were teens when our family moved into a new apartment. There was no time to think of decoration and our mother did it all by herself. When we saw awful standard furniture, in a soviet postmodernism style, we immediately started dreaming of a new place to live. In addition, our mother told us that the furniture was to be our family heritage, which we would leave to our children. That seemed quite logical to her as she studied herself at an antique table devolved from her grandmother. This was the moment when we realised that we wanted to change interiors and furniture around us, so our children would grow up in a distinct atmosphere free of preconceived standards. We never planned our studio to become as big as it is now. However, we were always hungry to work on the most interesting projects. That hunger for creative work led us to what we have today – a team of passionate people crazy about design. We
are happy to have a big team that continues to grow. How would you describe your unique style? We try to complete each of our projects in a unique and distinct way, yet you can see Sundukovy Sisters’ recognisable hallmark in each of them. We take a rational approach to design – people plus location define a public space first of all. We start our work by analysing the audience. Who will come to have dinner in our restaurant? Which travellers will stay in our hotel? The history of the place, its location, is no less important. Our public space interiors must be part of the space, everything should create the mood for guests in harmonious combination with the geography and history of the location. We seek specific solutions that comply with the functional tasks: ergonomic effectiveness, navigation, logistics, lighting, materials tactile features. And we don’t forget about self-irony. Our interiors have a contemporary chic feel, yet foreshadow trends – establishing them as part of the unique Sundukovy Sisters style. What would you say are the top three trends influencing bar interiors at present? For us the main trend is not to be in trend. The core is to bring a concept and idea to life, to create a place that is comfortable for guests.
We divide all trends into two types: artificial trends and natural trends. The industry creates artificial trends – those we can observe at design and furniture shows. We do not follow such trends, but we do track them not to get hooked on them. Natural trends is a result and reflection of changes that happen in our life, customs and habits. Those trends are always simple and logical, easy to explain, and these we follow when creating interior design. These are the three trends we observe in bar interiors at present: – Distinctiveness. Excessive loft style and ubiquitous oversimplified hipster style are being replaced by individual style. We should ask the question: how our bar differs from the one next to us, which in turn is alike the neighboring bar. The answer is obvious – the advantage is in our identity. For roof top gastro bar Maybe. in Moscow we mixed aristocratic Art Deco with plenty of green plants. The main point of attraction here is the stunning view, which is why we created a quiet interior design. However, the bar itself is shining and inviting, with a big rose mirror through which you can see Art Deco drawings. – Personal interaction – a friendly barman has always been more important than the interior itself. We think that principle worked for the very first bar in the world. Nowadays personal interaction, and not a virtual one,

Interior design for Le Louis Versailles Château MGallery By Sofitel, hotel, France
has become even more valuable in guest’s communications. After the overall euphoria about technologies – like an option to order via tablet integrated right into your table – has gone, we realised that guests actually come for a visit, not just to eat and drink. We have recently implemented this idea in the bar of Le Louis MGallery By Sofitel hotel in Versailles while working on its renovation last year. Hotel guests almost never spent time in the old bar. Therefore, we relocated the hotel bar from the closed-off area to the centre of the orangery so that you can see it from every corner. We added a stylish light/art object that creates a cosy illumination, and made a round table so the barman could interact with all guests. To support our idea we recommended that hotel management pay attention to barman charisma. – Integration of contemporary art into design. Contemporary art has become more interactive, this trend is reflected in interior design for bars. Integration of contemporary art into interior design is especially relevant in the era of millennials. We have been implementing this trend in our recent works. We have just finished renovation of the public areas of Pullman Berlin Schweizerhof.
As part of the new design concept we installed a large 3d LED screen, hanging over the bar space with extension in the lobby and on the second floor. The screen is the core element of the hotel bar and lobby. It serves for projection of our unique designed drawings, which repeat the hotel style. Following our own approach – the hotel interior shall form part of the city space – we decided to bring the nearby point of interest, the zoo, into the hotel and make it in the Bauhaus style. A luminous giraffe looks into the hotel lobby from the street, while a big zebra continues the zoo theme in the restaurant. Expensive materials supplement the strict geometry of Bauhaus shapes. Our aim was to change the standard image of a business hotel, but to keep the comfort and service level of a five star hotel.
central aspect of the Sleep Bar is a communal table where guests sit and communicate with each other. Most importantly, we place the barman in the midst of the guests as the event host who will entertain them. This all forms the basis for personal networking and unique opportunities for live interaction. As a visual reflection of all these components, we have used mirrors in the décor, which give the impression of an endless table that unites humans. The Sleep Bar is closed-off from the main area with partitions, which provoke guests’ desire to join in this shared event. Together, these elements create a completely modern, artistic and exceptional bar which offers guests the chance to enjoy unique wonderful feelings and fond memories.
What would you say is the most memorable or unusual bar you’ve worked on, and why? Sleeper Bar 2017. This year’s event is Loyalty: Lessons in Love, which made us reflect on how we can create an unforgettable experience for guests. Our design will emphasise the importance of human interaction in eliciting loyalty: not only loyalty between people but loyalty between the brand and individuals. The
What design challenges do you feel are unique to bar design and how do you overcome them? To create a unique atmosphere is core for a bar. That is where the design process starts. First, think of the atmosphere and then create it. Another challenge is to consider ergonomic aspects. The bar counter is like a rocket dashboard; every detail matters, everything

should be at hand’s reach. Moreover, light is important. There should be warm subdued lighting focusing only on the main points of attraction. It is almost a scenic lighting work. How do you ensure your projects stand out in such a fast-paced and heavily populated sector? We strive to make each project unique, and constantly ask ourselves – how can we develop even further? We start with an idea and a concept, and then in the process we constantly distil it, cutting off all that is unnecessary. We follow only natural trends, not the mere fashion itself. We make an aesthetically well-done design, putting the comfort of the guest first and not forgetting about the functional processes and pay back. Have you got any new projects underway or on the horizon you’re able to share with us? We are currently working on design for a restaurant in the famous Zaryadye park in the heart of Moscow. The restaurant design appeals to a nostalgic feeling about life in the 60s, referring to a heritage of Russian Avant Garde, Art Deco and the era of space exploration. Another recent project is Remy Kitchen Bakery in Moscow. The idea was to create a place balancing between past and future. A grandmother style drawing on the floor, hipster style ceiling finish reflect the past, and elegant bar in Art Deco style and graphic style decoration for windows symbolise the great style comeback in design. In addition to Europe, we are glad to work on projects in the Middle East. Two restaurants,

Osh La Mer and Berezka Chalet, designed by us are opening this year in Dubai. Osh La Mer Dubai interior was supposed to include the exact copies of architectural masterpieces of
berezka unique colour to paint the palms at the entrance of the restaurant. This funny feature helps create the proper mood: Berezka Chalet is not about luxury and VIP, but is classy and

We unite those two levels by a bespoke light art object and beautiful spiral stairs. For Berezka Chalet restaurant (Berezka – a symbolic Russian tree) we had to create a classy restaurant of Russian and Uzbek cuisine using wood finishes. The solution was to use

Puccini pairs legacy with modernity in British Columbia San Francisco design firm, Puccini Group, is behind the sleek new bar at the Fairmont Express – a luxury hotel in Victoria, British Columbia. The bar, formerly the Empress Room, is part of a wider renovation of the hotel’s public areas, veranda and dining spaces. The bar’s design centres on the Empress Room’s heritage, the natural landscape of Victoria Island and the sparkling Inner Harbour in which the hotel is situated. Puccini Group has enhanced and enlivened the Edwardian style interior of the space, resurrecting the original hardwood floors and highlighting the striking coffered ceiling with silver. An eye-catching quartzite central bar is accented with sculptural overhead lighting, while the back bar features satin brass detailing and a collection of glass decanters. The reflected light of the harbour has been captured through patterned wallcoverings, while a jewel-like host stand and sumptuous leather banquettes complete the space.

Puccini Group has also rejuvenated the hotel’s tea room, which transforms into a champagne bar by night. Here, a colour palette drawn from the original Empress tea service china has been used as a base, reinterpreted and modernised by the design team for use in the interiors and branding. The original chandeliers have been enhanced with new shading, while fabrics reminiscent of tweed and boucle play off the marquetry flooring. The design team has upholstered the original tea tables with leather insets, complemented by Thonet chairs with rattan backs. A bar without borders Collaboration and inclusivity have always been core tenets of BrewDog’s philosophy, so it seemed a logical extension when the Scottish brewery recently announced plans to open a new bar on the border between the USA and Mexico. The bar’s exact location remains top secret, though BrewDog has revealed that half will be in Texas, the other half in Chihuahua, Mexico. The geographical border will be demarcated by a dotted line across the centre of the bar and along the venue’s outdoor area. Built from old shipping containers, the construction will be officially defined as a temporary mobile building, serving Mexico beers on the US side, and US beers on the Mexico
side, as well as BrewDog’s range of craft beers, brewed in Columbus, Ohio. “We will request official permission from the local authorities to put it there and adhere to any red tape stuff, but I guess it would make it more difficult to build a wall if there’s a BrewDog bar in the way,” James Watt, BrewDog’s co-founder comments. “We’re planning on putting the bar there anyway until someone tells us to move it. ”Beer is a universal language and has a heritage and legacy that far outdates the creation of most nation states. dwp creates interior for world’s highest whisky bar
The Dome at lebua has teamed up with Pernod Ricard to create the ultimate whisky drinking experience at Alfresco 64 - A Chivas Bar in Bankok. The venue, which opened earlier this year, is said to be the highest outdoor whisky bar in the world, perched a staggering 800ft in the air. International design agency, dwp, was tasked with creating a design concept befitting of this special venue, drawing inspiration from the sleek lines of a luxury yacht to create a premium and memorable experience. The bar comprises three parts, the first of which is an indoor area. The lacquered rosewood flooring and sunken seating here create the impression of an
opulent yacht cabin, while a bar counter – meticulously formed from large pieces of wood and accentuated with curves and silver metal lines – resembles the dynamic lines of a lxury vessel. The second section is the Heritage Room, specially created for VIPs and ideal for hosting private parties and whisky tastings. Perhaps the highlight of the bar, however, is its impressive outdoor area. Designed to resemble the prow of a luxury yacht, the space looks out over the side of the building, with a glass railing along the edge allowing guests to enjoy the majestic Bankok views. dwp.com

Real brick interiors that add character

An attractive, welcoming environment is a fundamental requirement for any bar interior and, while design trends are constantly evolving, quality finishes are always in demand. Mullan Lighting creates chandelier designs for Dublin distillery Mullan Lighting has designed and manufactured three commanding chandeliers for the newlyopened Pearse Lyons Distillery and visitor centre in Dublin. Situated in the historic and recentlyrefurbished St James’s Church, the new distillery has been developed by Irish-born entrepreneur and founder of Alltech, Pearse Lyons. The striking chandeliers – suspended in a single row – are made entirely from moulded copper and steel. Two of the designs have a diameter of 150cm, alongside a larger design with a diameter of 250cm. The concept for the chandelier was conceived by Mullan Lighting’s lead designer James Cleary, progressing through multiple concept sketches and design iterations before 3D renders were created to help visualise the final product design. “During the archaeological excavation of the site a very old coin was found,” James explains of the inspiration behind the design. “On it was a faded but noticeable Roman cross, which formed the basis of the design brief that we were given. “We’ve taken this religious symbol and integrated it into the outer steel ring of the chandelier. Cutting out the shape of 12 Roman crosses around the bounding ring of the chandelier has enabled light reflecting off the illuminating inner copper ring to shine through. “The copper components were introduced early in the design phase to complement the copper instruments of the distillery. The bowl shape and dome copper base and top are all design decisions that we’ve taken to allow the chandelier to better reflect its setting and the distilling instruments installed below.” Combining Pearse’s formidable experience and expertise in the food and brewing industries, Pearse Lyons Distillery is set to produce 1000 litres of whiskey per week and is expected to attract up to 75,000 visitors per year. mullanlighting.co

Central Design Studio founder brings new independent restaurant to Crystal Palace Created by two south east London residents – entrepreneur Manish Utton-Mishra and acclaimed interior designer Ian Haigh of Central Design Studio – Crystal Palace’s new deli/bistro, Salt + Pickle, combines local suppliers’ produce with time-honoured preserving techniques. Here, Ian Haigh tells us more about the concept, his longheld passion for food, and the challenges and reward of designing his own restaurant ...
When and how did you first come up with the concept for Salt + Pickle? I’ve known Manish for about five years or so. He runs the local cheese and wine shop called Good Taste, and we were customers. After a while we became friends, and I mentioned he should think about doing a tapas bar – initially in the back yard of Good Taste. Salt + Pickle is really an extension of what he has been doing at Good Taste, but taking it a step further looking at the popular concept of preservation. Why did you settle on Crystal Palace as a location? Well, first of all, it’s where we both live so it’s very convenient! It’s also a market we know very well, and where Manish has built up a
strong following. But it’s a very tricky market; very loyal but also fiercely independent. A Costa opened last year, and people were up in arms. We had to make sure it was excellent quality, but not too high-end. People had to instantly know it was independent. Has it always been an ambition of yours to open a restaurant? It has; I’ve always been a bit of a frustrated chef. My mother’s family is Italian, and growing up we were surrounded by food and entertaining. I did actually want to be a chef when I was a kid. That link with food has never left me, and when I started my design career restaurants were a natural fit. As a designer, I’ve always been far more interested in creating an atmosphere, rather than just creating an aesthetic. Getting involved
and investing in restaurants seemed like a very natural way to expand what we do at Central Design Studio. Was the experience of designing a restaurant yourself and investing in it what you expected or hoped? I think the biggest learning experience was being exposed to the business and financial side to starting and running a restaurant. As a design company we’ve always been respectful of clients’ budgets, and appreciate that at the end of the day a restaurant needs to make money, but this was a real eye-opener. Even on a small project like this, the costs mount up. Legal fees, stamp duty, initial operating costs. I can see why so many restaurants fail before they even open. Luckily, in addition to Manish and myself, we
have another partner who has over 20 years’ experience in the business side of restaurants. What were the main challenges you faced, both from a design and operational standpoint, and how did you overcome them? I was very keen that we run this project like any other we would do at Central Design Studio, so it wouldn’t become some vanity project or just designed to my own personal taste. In that respect, we had the usual operational issues and ‘client’ aspirations to fulfill. But I think having such a tight budget for the build was definitely the biggest challenge. It was about half what we would usually work with on a project like this! Luckily though, everyone was prepared to muck in, and we even roped in friends and family to help decorate. What themes/inspirations inform the restaurant’s design? There’s a subtle narrative behind the design of ‘minimal intervention’. This really comes from the food and drink, whether it’s great produce treated with respect to bring out the best in
them, or some of the natural wines and craft beers we sell. This then manifests itself in the design through various forms, from the old exposed ceiling, to natural copper counter top, to the geometric shapes on the walls (inspired by the work of minimalist artist Carmen Herrera). These shapes and pop of colour also balance out the more rustic and raw elements in the design. Could you take us through some of the standout design elements? The copper bar top was the big ticket item for us, and on such a tight budget we really had to justify the cost. We were keen to make sure the counter stood out as a showcase, and also have a warmth around it so copper was an ideal material. However, to pay for this we forwent air-conditioning, and then of course opened on the hottest day of the year! How do you feel about the end result? To say I’m pleased is an understatement. The design I think looks great, and has a really good feel about it, but perhaps more importantly
the feedback from customers has been unbelievable. We were packed from day one, and it really has been a fantastic project to be part of. What do you feel the restaurant will bring to the local area? I’m hoping it will become part of the fabric of the neighbourhood, and that people will love it. As a designer, really that is your biggest compliment. What is next for you and Central Design Studio? Do you plan to invest in any more restaurants? Work continues as normal at Central Design Studio, and we are working on some great projects in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Investment-wise, we are getting involved with a coffee shop in Islington called St Paul, a restaurant and bar in Shoreditch (as yet unnamed), and potentially a restaurant in London with a very well-known chef… watch this space! saltandpickle.com centraldesignstudio.com
Avocado Sweets work their magic at Boxpark Croydon Hospitality Interiors’ Gemma Ralph took a trip to Boxpark Croydon to speak with Adam Jackowski, co-owner of Wine&Deli, and Evros and Susie of Avocado Sweets, about the value great interior design can bring to independents within a competitive and unforgiving industry.
Entrepreneurial young trio Adam Jackowski, Tom Yip and Daniel Esteban epitomise the infectious climate of regeneration sweeping Croydon at present. Following the notable success of their burger restaurant, BRGR&Beer, they’ve added Wine&Deli – a unit in the newlyopened Boxpark Croydon – to their bow. Boxpark’s original site opened in London’s Shoreditch back in 2011 with a vibrant mix of modern street market and pop-up retail mall. This new site in Croydon channels much the same philosophy, but with a sole focus on food and beverage. Though it features a number of global names, Boxpark Croydon acts as fertile ground for independent retailers, creating a unique platform to connect with a wide and captive audience. Of course, the presence of widely recognised chains, and the compact nature of the units –
which are composed of repurposed shipping containers – mean that independents still have their work cut out to make an impact and draw in custom. First impressions, in this case, are everything, and the Wine&Deli team made a conscious decision to create a bold and exciting interior – cue Avocado Sweets. Founded by husband and wife team, Evros and Susie Agathou, Avocado Sweets has a flair for channelling the passion and core values of its clients into their designs, with a characteristic quirky twist. Having worked with the likes of Chit Chaat Chai and Little Saigon – both of which were launching debut restaurants, and with bucketloads of passion and energy – Evros and Susie were the perfect pairing for Adam, Tom and Daniel in their new venture. Wine&Deli’s offering – think small plates,
cured meats, cheeses and a carefully curated selection of wine and beer – is top notch, and may traditionally be considered highbrow fare, but the guys wanted the dining experience to be firmly informal and, most importantly, fun. The team initially went to Avocado Sweets with an industrial-style interior in mind and, while Evros and Susie were receptive to their ideas and vision, they also developed another scheme concurrently that they felt best captured the boys knowledge and passion. To Evros and Susie’s delight, they loved this alternate concept, and the bold, vibrant interior of Wine&Deli began to take shape very quickly from here. Of course, the 40 by 8ft site brought with it some integral challenges. As it was an empty shell, it needed to be built from scratch, and in as short a timescale as possible. In fact,
the design process was completed in just six weeks, with a build phase of around 30 days. Given this tight turnaround and the nature of the Boxpark environment as a whole, Adam tells me that Avocado Sweets’ expertise in construction and their knowledge of the regulations and legislation surrounding the operation were utterly invaluable. The size of the unit presented Evros with a number of considerations in relation to layout, guest comfort and all-important covers. Elements such as the inward-folding doors removed precious space, and with a kitchen and bar area to incorporate in addition to the main dining area – this was no small challenge. At times, Evros tells me, the team were working with millimetres to maximise every available avenue. Having said this, decisions borne from spatial restrictions have actually boosted the informal, social atmosphere the guys wanted to achieve. The decision to use paper plates and small tumblers for wine mean that additional storage space is not required, but also serves to remove the unwanted formalities of the dining experience. The wine is displayed on the counter – both to save space, and to allow customers to visualise the carefully-selected offering and choose based on appeal. In essence, the design doesn’t take itself seriously, much like Adam, Tom and Daniel. This is not to say, however, that an incredible amount of work, talent and vision has not gone into the space. Avocado Sweets have fully immersed themselves in the project – both in terms of the guys’ business approach, and in terms of Croydon’s architecture and recent resurgence. Evros tells me that he likes to take a “method-actor” approach when it comes to design, and has spent time researching and appreciating the area’s prominent Art Deco architecture, graffiti art scene and its local history – apparently Croydon was once home to the first international airport constructed in the UK, who knew! Elements of Art Deco styling are certainly prominent within Wine&Deli’s interior, but not in a traditional sense. “I didn’t want to articulate the Art Deco theme in it’s neat and distinguished form,” he tells me, “I wanted to layer the design physically and metaphorically to bring more of contemporary Croydon to the table.” The stunning Art Deco wallpaper on the right hand side of the restaurant, for example, has been overlaid with street art created by a professional artist. On the left, the wall is entirely composed of Art Deco posters selected and applied by the Wine&Deli team.
The Tom Dixon lighting was Avocado Sweets’ luxury purchase, Evros tells me, with something of a twinkle in his eye as he looks at Adam. Bought as a choice investment piece, the ceiling and wall lights bring a warmth and high quality feel to the space. We move on to talk of the difficult decision independent brands face when it comes to investment – not just in terms of where to spend and where to save, but far more broadly in the sense of investing in interior design as a whole. It can be a real conflict, Susie explains, when start-ups are faced with the significant initial outlay of hiring design professionals, but she is confident that this investment will pay dividends in the longterm. Navigating logistics, construction, health and safety legislation and so on is one thing, but even if this is executed successfully, there is still the saturated and highly competitive nature of the market to contend with. As global brands find new ways to diversify and emulate the more unique attributes of independents, a strong brand identity and an interior that can
draw in and keep custom has never been more important. If independents can get it right first time, there is no reason why they can’t rival the popularity and success of global chains, if they so wish, as evidenced by Wine&Deli’s recent nomination for a prestigious SBID award. “Awards are a real bonus for us,” Susie says. “We’re so pleased that the judges have recognised the amount of work that has gone into the project and the different, but no less complex, challenges that come with designing a space this size.” The independent restaurant scene has so much to offer, and the diversity it brings – as Boxpark Croydon so uniquely demonstrates – is vitally important. A little gem in Notting Hill Intimate, yet perfectly formed, Marianne is a shining example of what can be achieved with even the most compact of spaces. Seating just 14, this Notting Hill restaurant was opened by chef Marianne Lumb – MasterChef finalist and rising star – with a team of three. London based-interior design studio, Godrich Interiors, was responsible for the restaurant’s interior, and has created a soft, elegant and comforting environment within which the
time experimenting with the restaurant’s layout to create the ideal configuration. “The small size of the space was the main challenge – it was like designing a boat!” Ed explains. “The layout was exceptionally hard to agree on. Storage in a restaurant is incredibly vital so we used every nook possible – we squeezed in storage where we didn’t think storage could exist! “We also did approximately 20 different
food on offer, so it was important that diners left thinking about the food first and the interior second. “Lighting was one of the most important aspects of the design. We sourced some wall lights that were like little works of art when they are lit. They create reflected shadows on the walls, which provide a subtle level of design detail. I am told the restaurant gets a lot of compliments about them, as they are so
food takes centre stage. Hospitality Interiors’ Gemma Ralph spoke with Ed Godrich, the firm’s creative director and co-founder to find out more. “Marianne and I discussed the food that was going to be on offer in great detail,” Ed explains. “This is how we started the inspiration. We were lucky that we had a client who has great taste, as this was a huge benefit. We both studied at architecture school together so we were in sync from the very start and we developed the design concept together.” Creating a successful, yet subtle interior with considerable space restrictions is no mean feat, but Ed and his team spent a great deal of
seating plans to maximise the space. We originally thought it could be 16 covers, but in the end settled on 14 so that no chair got nudged and every customer would feel cosseted.” As the restaurant’s interior is designed to be soft and muted, Ed and his team have focused less on colour and bold accents and more on the finer details to create impact. The bespoke tables, for example, and the 50s Danish armchairs Ed determinedly sourced to bring a classic silhouette to the restaurant. “We wanted the space to feel intimate, like you were dining at home,” says Ed. “The interior of the restaurant was the support act for the
unusual.” It is always challenging to bring a new concept to a much loved area, particularly if there are a number of fantastic venues within close proximity, but it seems that Marianne has been readily accepted into the Notting Hill fold. “We were lucky that the area has a great reputation already for food and drink,” affirms Ed. “We had a lot to live up to being surrounded by iconic venues such as The Cow and The Westbourne, so being part of the first fine dining experience in this well-loved corner of Notting Hill was exciting.” godrichinteriors.com mariannerestaurant.com

The expressive and distinctive design for the new Nobu Hotel Shoreditch is the result of the collective efforts of Ron Arad Architects and Ben Adams Architects, and features overhanging floor slabs and cantilevered steel beams forming a frayed edge to the east, where a landscaped garden is terraced to provide natural light to the restaurant space. The hotel’s interior was designed by local designer, Studio Mica. All parties worked in
collaboration to create a seamless transition between the hotel and the restaurant. Giving back to the local area, Nobu Hotel Shoreditch has opened a pocket garden, creating a public space between the vibrant streets and the calmness of the hotel. Each of the guest rooms exudes refined, relaxed sophistication, linking timeless design with contemporary functionality. Black joinery contrasts with the exposed concrete structure and soft textiles of the furniture to create an interior that is at once appealing to the eye and to the touch. This is juxtaposed with the bright white bathrooms, which feature a walk-in rain shower and custom-designed gold washbasin. Nobu Hotel Shoreditch also features unique suites, which overlook the courtyard and pocket garden from private balconies. These dynamic spaces have been meticulously designed to imbue the property’s distinctive architecture with
Japanese aesthetic subtleties. The largest suite is the exclusive Nobu Suite, featuring two private balconies with views across London’s iconic skyline, a dining area, a lounge, and a bathtub. The 240-seat Nobu Shoreditch restaurant was designed by Studio PCH. Inspired by the iconic Nobu look, the 340m² restaurant space’s sleek wooden finish creates a cool and contemporary environment. Reached via a grand staircase, Nobu Shoreditch is bathed in natural light from the 5m-tall glass doors leading out to the Nobu Terrace. Perfect for open-air dining, the terrace, which can entertain up to 80 people, is split into four level terraces and available for private functions. Guests can also enjoy the semiprivate dining space overlooking the custombuilt open kitchen. Hosting up to 18 people, this is the perfect spot from which to experience the theatre of the Nobu kitchen.

Realising the restaurant Q&A: Severine Tatangelo, principal of Studio PCH (designer of the Nobu restaurant, Shoreditch) What themes/inspirations inform the restaurant’s design? The Shoreditch neighbourhood in London has been transformed from an industrial area into the creative hub of London’s East End. Nobu Shoreditch is part of this revival. We paid attention to the selection of the materials, such as teak, bronze detailing, and the fabric on the walls that matches the colour of the concrete structural elements in the space. We worked closely with London-based lighting designer Isometrix on the project, to celebrate the materials – from the high wood ceilings in the main dining area to the concrete walls throughout the space. We wanted to
showcase the materials in an elegant way. We combined the local character with the influence of Japanese culture. The space stays pure, simple and elegant, so that the bar and the main staircase became design accents in the project. Could you take us through some of the standout design elements? Upon entering the restaurant, you are immediately aware that the bar lies at its heart. Vintage sake bottles, Hokusetsu drums, Japanese Old Fashioned, barrel-aged Negroni and all-local liquors are lined up against the concrete wall, up to 15ft high.
Reflecting London’s culture, we wanted to provide a luxurious and grand, yet fun and relaxed bar for the local businessperson and the cultured traveller. From the bar looking up, the concrete staircase is emphasised by the wood and the detailed lighting. On the right, the unobstructed view to the garden creates this indoor/outdoor relationship frequent in Japanese culture and architecture. What were the main challenges faced during the project, and how were they overcome? Given the high ceilings and concrete walls, elevator, and staircase, the main challenge was to avoid creating a cold restaurant. We also faced the challenge of a very linear floorplan, with large doors opening to the garden on one end. From a lighting design standpoint, we worked closely with Isometrix to avoid unbalanced lighting throughout the restaurant. We created three different atmospheres to minimise this linear floorplan – the bar with high ceilings and towering bottle display, the main dining room with a wood ceiling and wood flooring to create a warmer and cosier
experience, and lastly a more private dining room, with indirect dramatic lighting and fireplaces. How does Nobu Shoreditch differ from other Nobu restaurants in design terms? We have designed several standalone Nobu restaurants, so our approach to designing Nobu Shoreditch was different as it is part of the Nobu hotel. Guests from the hotel will find design harmonies between the hotel public spaces going to the restaurant. We took into consideration the exterior of the building designed by Ron Arad, and the neighborhood, Shoreditch, formerly an industrial area of London that has become the creative hub of London’s East End. For his restaurants Chef Nobu created a unique Japanese-inspired menu with dishes that are fused with South American and Alaskan elements. With this in mind we tried to create a Japanese-inspired feel to the restaurant fused with local elements of the neighbourhood and culture thereby creating a space that is both unique and contextual at the same time.

On the hotel’s design Q&A: Carolynne Shenton, director and founder of Studio Mica (designer of the Nobu Hotel Shoreditch) Could you take us through some of the standout design elements? In the reception we designed a palette of materials that are textural and rich as a composition, and are in keeping with the creativity of the local area and Nobu’s values of simple luxury. A limited colour palette is repeated across various materials and textures. We consciously chose to retain the materials’ natural appearance where possible, using patinated metals and timbers from different species to accentuate colour variations. The reception is arranged as two spaces, defined by focal points to identify them as the hotel lounge and bar. The lounge has a feature installation of reclaimed tiles, made on site with Studio Mica and the building contractors, MTD. The subtle colour variations and architectural shapes of the tiles have been woven together to create a complex texture. Within this we created small niches to intersperse tea lights. The bar focal point is created by two central banquettes whose shape is repeated on the ceiling as large timber-framed structures

defining a three-dimensional space guests sit within. The diffuse woven panels of the structure change in illumination from day to night. In the evenings the floating globes gently illuminate the seating below. The frieze detail of the timber structure used one mile of hand-wrapped sisal rope! The concept for the guest rooms was to create tranquil spaces through simplicity. The guest can engage and adjust the ambience of the rooms to suit their mood.
When a guest enters their room, ahead of them is a composition of four different planes that they can move to adjust the light, colours and ambience of the room – a moving privacy screen, full-height glazing and an artwork that slides across a natural woven textured wall provides the room’s blackout. The interaction of the four planes creates the changing character to the room. Each guest room has a wall-mounted cabinet inspired by old canvas travel trunks,
which opens up like a bento box to reveal a colourful interior decorated with origami patterns and red lacquer. The cabinet hosts an illuminated tea box which presents to the guest the Nobu signature welcoming tea ceremony offered to each guest. Within the cabinet the guest discovers the TV, a minibar and vanity mirror. In each guest room we created a completely white bathroom concealed within a black joinery box – the delight in the contrast from one moment to another is the experience we thrive in creating. On first appearance the bathroom is quite clinical, but a single gold accent at the vanity subtly repeats around the bathroom within integrated features such as the vanity mirror that pivots to reveal an illuminated magnifying mirror. The apparently simple space provides guests with a serene room for bathing.

What were the main challenges faced during the project, and how were they overcome? The reception’s full-height and full-length glazed façade made the usually private lounge and bar completely visible to the street. We wanted to create a more intimate space for guests to relax in, whilst keeping the outside world sufficiently visible, yet with frequent glimpsed views to invite new guests to join the social space. We designed large joinery screens in the windows, framing different materials and openings — slats, pivot mirrors, and fabric-covered panels. In the guest rooms there are a lot of amenities to accommodate. We set out to create a calm and uncluttered space. We designed a single piece of wall-mounted furniture that contains and conceals everything, creating the maximum expanse of floorspace. The volume of the furniture is minimised by designing it as different planes and tonal shades of a single colour palette. How did Studio Mica’s intimate knowledge of the local area impact upon the project? Nobu in Shoreditch would, in the not-too-distant past, have been an unfathomable notion. 10 years ago, Shoreditch was a very different place. Shoreditch today is a complex hybrid of urban Bohemia, luxury living, the independent and cutting edge alongside the established very high end. Shoreditch is now comfortable in its role as a cosmopolitan, affluent, creative and instinctively stylish downtime village. A leisurely stroll around Shoreditch is more tempting an experience than it ever was. Although, literally, at the very centre of the centre, Willow Street is a curiously secluded, relatively tranquil street, slicing the Shoreditch triangle. Suddenly, Nobu in Shoreditch makes perfect sense (just about!).

Nobu itself brings some new delights, and the pleasure of the unexpected is a perpetual delight. There is the micro park, a piece of land given back to the local community as a way of thanks for accepting Nobu into their neighbourhood. Visitors who want to experience Nobu directly can enjoy the sunken courtyard terraces that lead from the restaurant. Beautiful gardens have a purpose beyond simply looking pleasing. We have also embraced Shoreditch’s cultural heritage, and as a centre for contemporary art. We developed our guest room design to
integrate art into the fabric of the space. A series of paintings were commissioned for the project from local artist Sichi. These were then reproduced as panels that become the sliding black-out screens in the guest rooms. Each room has a large-scale artwork, and each of those has been hand embellished, making each one unique. The series of paintings is titled Taizu, a Japanese expression meaning ‘to stay’. This directly relates to residing in a hotel room, beckoning the guest to take time to reflect on the work created for them.

Cabaret-era Berlin led Saar to the realisation that Provocateur Berlin should set out to shock. The hotel’s contemporary configuration trades in a traditional lobby for a large drawing room with bar and restaurant. Each of the property’s 58 rooms offers mysterious and romantic cosy corners, and the signature of each is the ‘provocateur mode’, a button which allows guests to set the mood and drift to a different world as the room’s lights dim, seductive tunes commence, and arousing video art plays. The Provocateur bar and restaurant lies at the heart of the property, located directly in the centre where chef Duc Ngo brings alive his vision of Franco-Chinese culinary creations. Saar Zafrir’s use of soft textures, with cosy colour palettes of red and blue, aim to make the hotel warm and titillate guests’ senses without crossing the line, resulting in a provocative and explorational experience for the ‘stay up all night, sleep all day’ crowd.

Sir Hotels has opened Sir Joan, Ibiza, an urban oasis featuring 38 maritime-inspired guest rooms and suites, and an Izakaya Asian Kitchen & Bar.

The first Spanish property for Sir Hotels is prominently located in the centre of Ibiza, overlooking the port and the old town. Consisting of 38 rooms and suites, including two penthouses and, on the ground floor, a pool, cabanas, as well as two restaurants and a bar, the hotel is open throughout the year. The top floor penthouse suites boast 80m2 wrap-around terraces, with 360° views of Ibiza, outdoor seating, a private cabana and an open-air kitchen. Penthouse guests can enjoy a private Izakaya dining experience with one of the restaurant’s chefs. “As with all Sir Hotels, it is essential that Sir Joan reflects the ethos of the surrounding area. We were inspired by the marina, the ocean, but also by the people on the island. By combining contemporary design with nostalgic details, we aim to create a unique urban oasis at the heart of the world-famous island,” says Liran Wizman, owner and founder of Sir Hotels. The interiors were designed by awardwinning architect and interior designer Baranowitz + Kronenberg, and pay homage
to yacht living and the ocean. The Barcelonabased architect Ribas & Ribas created a unique contemporary chequered façade in the heart of the island, just steps away from famous clubs such as Pacha and Lio. The property boasts a collection of curated artworks featuring work from Spanish art legend Joan Hernandez Pijuan, and Carlos Irijalba Inercia, alongside photographs from Ibiza-based photographer Landry A. The ground floor public area evokes a ‘members-only’ social club. Inside, vertical corrugated steel bars line up along the interior walls, resonating with naval ropes and the erosion of metal by the sea, while the outside area boasts a triangular pool, heated throughout the winter season, lined with cabanas and lounge chairs. In the public space, the outside blends into the inside, and is home to one of the property’s two restaurants, Izakaya Asian Kitchen & Bar. Originating in Amsterdam, the iconic restaurant offers guests and locals a culinary experience of contemporary Japanese cuisine, fused with
Peruvian flavours. The second restaurant, The Butcher, is an award-winning, high-end burger bar which is accessed through a separate entrance. The popular Amsterdam eatery will be open throughout the night, ideal for the island’s revellers. Both restaurants were founded and and are owned by Yossi Eliyahoo and Liran Wizman of The Entourage Group. Guests of Sir Joan have the opportunity to connect with the local culture through Sir Experiences, a new programme that consists of a collection of curated activities inspired by the lifestyle of Ibizan residents. The Ambassadori Hotel, located in the historical centre of Georgia’s capital, has been significantly enlarged over the last three years by architectural practice Studio D73.

A new 9000m2 building, based on an architectural project by local firm Qalaqproeqt, has been added to the historical part of the hotel, which was built in the Eighties, and has been maintained in its original condition. The building has 121 rooms – 83 of them new – and a Royal Suite, on five floors. The hotel also contains a spa, Italian restaurant and casino. Made in Italy has a starring role in this elegant, five-star hotel. D73 architects Marco Vismara and Andrea Viganò proposed an
eclectic style – a classic, elegant theme, with some contemporary points. Specific attention was paid to the details, in particular the elements created by the Italian workforce, which was well integrated with local artisans, resulting in a cultural dialogue between Italy and Georgia. An example of this is the use of wrought iron, which frames the stairs, as well as the windows facing the central hall, and for the external façades – it is a typical Georgian element, which has been combined with
precious marbles, elegant textiles, décor, wood, crystals and soft leathers. At the entrance of the building, guests are welcomed by a warm space and a cascade of light, provided by Reflex, and comprising numerous white and amber stars. The first cascade is a prelude to a more majestic one, made with six groups of lights that dominate the central hall and go up to the fifth floor. The light composition is enriched by a 12m back-lit onyx sheet behind the two welcome
desks. All around, the walls are covered with two kinds of leather – bright for the pillars and dark for the walls, with different finishes. At the entrance of the restaurant, guests are welcomed by another bright space. This large room can cater for up to 130 covers, is lit by elegant Zonca lights, and furnished by Francesco Molon furniture. Varying Ege carpet adorns each floor, differentiating the mix of suites, superior rooms and family rooms, with the furniture and textiles artfully echoing these elegant carpet designs. The close co-operation with Francesco Molon for this D73 project stands out not only in the communal areas of the hotel, but in the custom-made creation of all the room types, from the standard to the Royal Suite. A good example is the 150m2 executive suite 502, on the fifth floor of the building – an elegant custom-made room, with prestigious finishes by the local artisans on D73’s
instruction, and walls covered with textiles. Guests can also find table lights by Paralume Marina and wall lights by Patrizia Volpato. Adjoining, there is a luxury bathroom in black and white marble on the walls and floor. These colours feature on the larger pieces of bathroom furniture, which are completed with Signorini Rubinetterie fittings. Between the fourth and the fifth floor is the spa, which is completely realised in mosaic by Project Italia, together with marble and large mirrors. Here, a blue-themed swimming pool area dominates the space with a large and very impressive mosaic decoration by D73 on the pool floor. Chaises-longues by Roberti Rattan help guests to relax, alongside water jets and an area for upstream swimming. NYC architecture and design firm, Stonehill & Taylor, has interwoven rope-making and maritime motifs within the interiors of Brooklyn’s new Hilton hotel.

Stonehill & Taylor has created an urban, contemporary interior for this 196-key hotel, located within walking distance of the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Brooklyn Bridge Park. The hotel’s Schermerhorn Street address, which dates back to the early 19th century, takes its name from influential shipping businessman Peter Schermerhorn. Runnning from Smith Street to Bond Street, the street was originally the site of his “ropewalk” – serving ships in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
This history is reflected throughout the hotel’s interior, most prominently in the wall of woven, intertwined robe within the lobby. Here, several strands of rope extend from the wall, and are draped overhead before dropping down into a low millwork wall, forming a screen between the reception and the lobby. Throughout the lobby, herringbone marble floors are paired with a warm material palette, mixing metals with accents of black, burgundy and saturated navy.
Within the bar area, two custom metal screens outlining maps of Brooklyn and lower Manhattan create an indoor canopy with central communal seating. The map screens, sketched by designers at Stonehill & Taylor, were welded in a Brooklyn metal workshop. The adjacent 68-seat restaurant is clad with walnut-panelled walls, marble floors and modern furnishings. Public areas also include a fitness room, executive lounge, and flexible meeting spaces.
The meeting area provides a warm, contemporary setting, and aims to address Brooklyn’s growing need for event spaces. The floors feature navy carpeting with a beige, abstract winding rope pattern. White beadboard envelops the space as a nod to the hotel’s maritime-inspired concept. The rope-making motif continues throughout the hotel’s guest rooms, within four suites and along the guest corridors. As guests enter the elevator lobby, they are met with a mirrored triptych screen print with a Brooklyn Bridge marathon scene. The corridors are covered in navy blue carpeting with an unravelling rope graphic, while the wallcoverings feature a series of vintage Brooklyn map prints. Inspired by yacht and ship interiors, the guest rooms are simple and airy, with white linen walls, charcoal carpets with a cream knotted pattern, walnut furnishings with glossy white beadboard trim, and tall walnut headboards. An accent wall wrapping the outer corner is covered in a custom black-and-white toile pattern, composed of historically-inspired nautical vignettes hand-drawn by designers at Stonehill & Taylor. American hotel visionary Ian Schrager has expanded his global influence with the opening of his first hotel in China.

Brand design and interiors agency Mystery has completed work on Bōkan, a sky-high restaurant, bar and outdoor rooftop terrace in Canary Wharf.
Bōkan is set in the top three floors of Novotel’s new 39-storey flagship skyscraper in Canary Wharf, which boasts 360º views across London and beyond. Mystery partnered with Accor Hotels in 2015 and spent two years shaping and developing the Bōkan concept – from naming and branding to interior design and menu development, working closely with the Accor project team to bring the venue to life. Bōkan, meaning beacon in Anglo-Saxon, has been created as a dock-side destination for artisanal food and drink and to service both the hotel’s guests, and London’s gastronomic explorers. The 37th floor houses an intimate 65-cover restaurant. Mystery’s brief was to build the framework for a premium casual food concept with innovative twists on classic European dishes – to provoke nostalgia and inspire a journey of discovery.
The interior’s concept takes inspiration from London’s historic Docklands area, with a unique and beguiling combination of industrial and luxury comfort. The unique Docklands-chic style is presented through the use of subtle details referencing industrial pulleys and an imposing monolithic verdigris-aged metal staircase, which connects all three floors of Bōkan and encases the iconic feature charcuterie fridge, bread and olive oil display. Weathered metals, rustic timbers and polished concrete finishes are offset by warm lighting, cushioned lounge areas and vintage rugs, with carefully selected pieces of classic furniture to create a snug, refined and luxurious experience within an industrial setting. With floor-to-ceiling glazing, London’s iconic skyline features as the backdrop to the experience.

Steps from baseball’s Nationals Park, GrizForm Design Architects was asked to design a clean and airy restaurant perfect for date night meals, after-work snacks or pre-ballgame drinks. Brass accents, custom light fixtures and handmade tiles lend layers of authenticity throughout the 3495ft2 space. As guests first approach the restaurant, they are greeted by a large exterior bar that is nestled between Nationals Park and the Anacostia riverwalk. The bar is fully covered by a corrugated metal roof, allowing guests to enjoy the views even during spring showers. Just outside of the boathouse bar are three settings for lounge seating, while 10 dining tables and two communal tables sit around the corner on the boardwalk. Grey lounge benches feature deep navy cushions with white piping, plus small side tables that transform into extra seating. In addition, cocktail tables provide flexible seating for large game-day crowds. The journey continues as guests step through the vestibule of the main entrance, clad with a cedar shingle roof and black-and-white marble mosaic floors. A shiplap-clad host stand is adorned with a vintage compass capped with a weathered oak wood countertop. Photographs hung on weathered gray shiplap walls tell the story of the Oyster Wars in the Mid-Atlantic
States that had fishermen and citizens nearly at war over dredging rights. Behind the host stand, a Fresh Daily menu, crafted in wood and tile to resemble a traditional baseball scorecard, presents the day’s raw bar specials. To the left of the host stand, grey weathered oak floors lead to a large horseshoeshaped bar. The bulkhead mirrors the bar from above, featuring custom sconces on vintage hardware and cork wallcovering. The flooring of the bar changes from the grey, weathered oak floors back to the blackand-white marble mosaics. The matching tile runs up the bar wall, evoking the nostalgia of early oyster houses, while back-less bistro-style bar stools, upholstered in a deep brown leather, provide a space to sit and sip a cocktail. The back bar’s open metal shelving features nautical brass details with vintage finials at the posts, and serves as a window to the open kitchen. A low wall to the left of the bar creates a thoughtful partition from the dining room, and features an inset custom rope design crafted by local artist and weaver Linny Giffin. As guests continue to the light-flooded dining room, they find a large banquette upholstered in deep seagreen leather tufted with brass nailheads that runs along the exterior walls, paired with spindleback brown leather dining chairs.
Additionally, a row of two-top booths lines the low wall that divides the bar from the dining area. These mini booths, sitting on a 6in platform, feature the same weathered grey wood frame and sea-green upholstery, and offer guests a glimpse of the boardwalk. After passing through the banquette and mini booths, guests continue to the private dining room. Three grand archways, elaborately trimmed with two bronze dolphin ship bow ornaments recovered from an early 1900’s ship, sit at the entry. Beneath the two outer arches are large tufted booths with brass multi-globe chandeliers nestled by a window with views into the private dining room. The most impressive feature is a wood Dory boat that hangs from the weathered shingle-clad pitched ceiling. Directly across from the entry, the walls are covered in weathered singles and a deep navy blue shiplap wainscoting. Vintage sailing signal flags that are used as a communication tool between ships hang from the wall. To the left, ornately trimmed French doors lead to the private dining patio. The established design studio founded by Francesco Draisci recently completed its latest project – at one of London’s best-established Italian restaurants, in Belgravia.

Draisci Studio was asked to recreate an inspiring and welcoming interior for the newlyrelocated venue. As the restaurant has long been a destination for Londoners in search of authentic gourmet Italian food and wines, the interior design of the main dining area was inspired by the warmth and conviviality of regional Italian restaurants, but with contemporary enhancements. While the golden brick walls and large fitted mirrors reflect the traditional features of Italian trattoria, original additions were incorporated, in the form of colour-coded cut-out cork sections representing the regions of Italy, and soft wall projections that change every season – all serving to deliver a contemporary interpretation of Italian tradition and culture. Additional details include carefully-
structured lighting and a sensitive acoustic system installed in the main dining area. Draisci Studio used theatre-quality spotlights to create illumination for each table, and discreet acoustic devices, which allow quiet and intimate conversations, even in a crowded restaurant. A key feature is a private dining room in the cellar. This intimate area was designed to enhance the feel of the traditional wine cellar and to illustrate the authentic Italian heritage of the restaurant, its owner and chef. The cellar presents black, custom-made shelving, lava-textured finishes, and mirrored alcoves and corners which create an impression of space beyond its physical limits. Draisci Studio used a black reflective material on the ceiling with golden spotlights to intensify the sense of
depth and spaciousness. Enoteca Turi’s extensive selection of Italian wines forms a main feature of the design, via floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall open shelving which guides the eye over bottles organised in groups of multi-coloured bottle caps. Draisci Studio is an award-winning Londonbased practice that designs and develops unique projects from architecture to interiors, and from exhibitions to installations. A newcomer to The Bund scene, the Asian-fusion restaurant is set on the 4th floor of Bund 22, a building with a history of more than 100 years at the southern end of Zhongshan Road.

Built in 1906 in the ‘Electric Architecture style’, Bund 22 is the only century-old red-brick building on The Bund. As the building itself blends Western architecture with Chinese culture, the owners wanted Lady Bund to be a worthy representative of East-West fusion. They therefore invited Thomas Dariel, a Shanghai-based French designer, to bridge and play with both cultures while remaining firmly contemporary. Both Asian and European elements have

dishes prepared by the chef, and features an installation of intertwined copper pipes – an industrial reflection of the silk web. Each dining area hosts an elegant VIP room, separated from the restaurant by rattan partitions that ensure a semi-transparent intimacy. DesignLSM was approached by chef Stephen Li to create the interiors and branding for his new seafood grill restaurant in Billericay, Essex.

The idea behind Felix was to create a welcoming and refined restaurant offering, which would reflect chef Stephen Li’s culinary expertise whilst appealing to the local community. Housed in a former fishmongers shop, the 200m2 site is an intimate and unassuming space consisting of a main restaurant, bar and private dining area. The exterior of the restaurant has been re-envisioned with a striking white-washed shop front, complemented by bold signage and gold vinyls, creating a prominent presence on the town’s high street. Upon entry, guests are greeted by a dramatic monolithic desk, decorated with touches of subtle lighting and a 3D cladded feature wall, bringing layers of
warmth and texture into the space. Pockets of soft green leather banquettes lead down to a rich cooper bar, which illuminates the front of the main restaurant space with its highlighted gantry and bold façade. A prominent feature is the bespoke wallcovering, designed with hues of pinks, greens and golds, that conjures the feel of a calming ocean. Contemporary walnut slatted screens divide the bespoke seating in the restaurant area, allowing for a more intimate and relaxed setting, while an impressive open kitchen pass overlooks the private dining area known as ‘The Chef’s table’, allowing diners the chance to experience a sense of culinary theatre. The branding takes its cues from the subtle Japanese influence that is carefully built
into Stephen’s seafood menu. DesignLSM developed a series of curved contour lines in an opulent gold and navy colour palette to convey a rich, contemporary feel. The studio states that the refined logo, with its bold, modern typeface, reflects the restaurant’s sophisticated persona. Applications included signage, business stationery and a full menu suite, complemented with leather-embossed covers. London-based Fabled Studio has redesigned Bray’s historic The Hind’s Head, presenting a whimsical and playful new design concept to commemorate a building rich in history.

Fabled Studio’s mischievous reincarnation gives eccentric references to the building’s origins as a hunting lodge and coaching inn, providing a dramatic backdrop to celebrate the eclectic British cooking style that The Hind’s Head has become known for since Heston Blumenthal took over in 2004. From the high street entrance, the ground floor space has been remodelled to create a cosy dining area. The West Room, swathed in hand-carved oak wall panelling and reclaimed timber flooring with oxblood leather banquettes and low-level lighting, resonates with the Grade II Listed building’s existing finishes, antique beams and open fireplaces. The room will also house the restaurant’s own private cellar, with Fabled Studio to undertake a second phase of redesign that will offer an expanded wine collection, displayed behind a large glass picture wall. Venturing upstairs, guests are invited to
explore The Royal Lounge. Fabled Studio’s vision for its first dedicated cocktail bar was to create an opulent, handsome retreat filled with a mix of antique and custom-designed sofas and armchairs, Afghan rugs, chandeliers created from English blunderbusses and table lighting made from old copper heat lamps, meat mincers and antique books. Steven Saunders, co-founder and creative director at Fabled Studio, created a 3D-printed Cockentrice (a pig-turkey hybrid dish) trophy to adorn the wall. An imaginary tale of the chefs setting out to hunt the beast is printed onto the room’s Toile de Jouy drapery. For this, Fabled Studio commissioned the illustrator Dave McKean, who has worked with Heston on various other projects. With a rich green paint palette extending into the vaulted beamed ceiling, the space will exude the ambience of a private members club, crossed with a fantastical hunting lodge.
The dramatic redesign of the existing Private Dining Room, The Vicar’s Room, has been inspired by the building’s historic association with Simon Aleyn, the infamous Vicar of Bray. Seating up to 20 people, the room’s centrepiece is a bespoke, 5m-long banqueting table, hewn from a single piece of oak and inscribed with wording taken from the chorus of a song referencing the vicar. The lyrics echo the ever-changing, religious allegiances of the vicar, and that tongue-incheek reference has been extended further into two commissioned chandeliers that have a wire portrait of the reigning monarchs during the vicar’s career. With the addition of studded leather, carved wood seating, a rich red paint palette and wall lights figured from bronze hands holding each bulb, the room delivers a truly unique setting to celebrate any private occasion. fabledstudio.com

FILA protects In Situ encaustics at Jamie’s Italian A FILA tile protection and care regime has been specified, alongside In Situ London’s Moroccan cement tiles, at Jamie’s Italian. The stunning installation spans the restaurant and bar area, on floors and on walls below open serving counters. FILA protection and finishing treatments were chosen to protect and enhance the encaustic-style Moroccan tiles throughout the fixing process. One of the latest additions to Jamie’s chain, the new restaurant is situated within the Hilton Hotel at Tower Bridge. Designed by Stiff + Trevillion, the stunning interior broadly follows Jamie’s established style but with a more contemporary feel. Throughout the restaurant, the tiles’ distinct oblique pattern mirrors the suspended ceiling and lighting design and the restaurant’s rustic, earthy tones. During the installation, In Situ initially applied FILAPRW200 pregrouting protector to the cement tiles. The water-based treatment, from FILA’s Green Line, is specially designed for absorbent materials and protects against grout, water and building site residues, without altering appearance or affecting adhesion. FILAPS87 was then used to deep clean the tiles, before protecting the tiles and grout lines against stains with solvent-free FILAMP90 ECO PLUS. Kingston’s new DoubleTree Hilton welcomes LED filament lighting
Leading LED filament brand Bright Goods has announced its installation into Kingston’s brand new DoubleTree Hilton Hotel. The range of decorative, vintage-style LED filament lamps with a huge designer following is lighting up the ground floor public areas including the reception, lobby and restaurant. The project has been specified and managed by interior design architects, DesignLSM in conjunction with The Light Corporation. The DoubleTree, an upmarket 146-bedroom Hilton hotel located on the edge of the town offers stylish and contemporary accommodation, state-of-the-art conference facilities and the hotel’s signature restaurant, Hawkers Bar and Brasserie, which is themed around Kingston’s extensive aviation history. It is an art deco-inspired area with an open-plan kitchen and an enclosed outside dining terrace. The Light Corporation was commissioned to design a lighting system that not only complemented the aviation theme but provided warm and elegant illumination throughout. An impressive range of Bright Goods LED filament lamps was specified to enhance distinct areas of the hotel. The lamps, all in 2.2K very warm colour temperature highlight the various shaped LED filaments and create a welcoming, atmospheric ambience. The Florence 6W sepia tinted maxi globes, for example, are hung bare and installed in clusters amongst the copper pipework that runs around the perimeter of the restaurant, giving a contemporary industrial feel. The Elizabeth 3W candles, Joseph 5W GLS’, Jane 6W sepia tinted classic pears and John 6W long tubes are installed throughout the
reception area, lobby, lounge, kitchen, bar and restaurant area providing a warm and cosy glow for all visitors. Steven Brazil, general manager at DoubleTree by Hilton in Kingston, says: “Aesthetically we were looking to create a modern and industrial décor and the Bright Goods LED filament lamps definitely helped us achieve this. Convive Restaurant, Weetwood Hall, Leeds Convive is a stylish new £2m Mediterranean restaurant and bar recently opened at Weetwood Hall Hotel & Conference Centre, near Leeds, serving classic and modern Italian, Greek and Spanish dishes. The 120-seater restaurant, the brainchild of Weetwood Hall’s managing director Martin Hicks, has been furnished throughout by leading contract furniture supplier Andy Thornton. Hicks said: “Convive has been in planning for a long time and I’m delighted my original vision

Brintons partners with RPW Design in transformation of landmark London hotel Set on the vibrant South Bank, London’s County Hall is one of the city’s most impressive and best-known landmarks. Although opened in 1922 as the seat of London’s local government, since 1998 the historic building has hosted the iconic London Marriott Hotel County Hall. Having recently undergone a major transformation by RPW Design, the five-star hotel now brims with distinctive contemporary British style and character. Leading international carpet company Brintons partnered RPW on the design and manufacture of bespoke-made Axminster carpets for this technically-demanding yet creative project. Working in close collaboration with RPW, the Brintons team drew on the decorative art deco architectural components of the building, including Listed wooden panelling, geometric wrought ironwork and vaulted ceilings of the principal corridors, as inspiration for its contemporary carpet designs. A muted contemporary palette that echoes the subtle hues of the historic stone, soft metals and watery greys of the Thames unites the luxury bespoke-made carpets manufactured by Brintons for the corridors, guest rooms, presidential suite,
and meeting rooms. Given the historic and unusual geometry of the Grade II Listed building, the project was not however without its technical challenges. A gently curved corridor, mirroring the crescentshaped façade of the main building, presented an opportunity for Brintons to demonstrate its expertise in problem-solving. The company overcame the unyielding geometry to design and manufacture a wall-to-wall carpet that followed the curved limits of the floor while maintaining a perfectly-aligned central patterned panel. “Due to the complex geometry of the Marriott County Hall guest corridors, the Brintons’ team had to overcome mathematical and decorative challenges to accomplish the objectives of the brief, to have our design follow along the complex curvature of the building. We appreciate Brintons’ expertise in bringing our vision to fruition,” explains Ariane Steinbeck, MD, RPW Design. “At RPW we routinely insist that our suppliers, who we consider partners, go the extra mile. We expect our suppliers to think outside the routine parameters and to push manufacturing options to the limit. Poplar plywood – challenging the ordinary With a thought-provoking plywood exhibition at V&A Museum until November, Hospitality Interiors recently joined James Latham in the stunning La Rioja region of Spain, to discover more about its poplar plywood supplier, Garnica.
From modest beginnings in 1941 producing fruit boxes at its sawmill in Banos de Rio Tobia in La Rioja, Spain, Garnica has steadily evolved into an impressive multi-site business creating a collection of beautifully-engineered poplar plywood for a wide range of purposes. The heart of the business, however, remains the management of the natural poplar resource which it farms very effectively in the immediate region. Travelling towards the La Rioja region, stands of poplar become increasingly evident and it is this fast-growing resource that lies at the source of Garnica’s premium quality poplar plywood products which are suitable for use in architectural and design applications as well as furniture, boats and caravans. The Garnica business is characterised by a clear ethical stance. With investment from venture captalist group ICG, the company has been able to sustain and develop its five factories in the La Rioja region. The original factory, Banos del Rio Tobia I, is still in operation today – a testament to the seamless production model executed by Garnica. The business manages in excess of three million cubic metres of poplar plantations – an awful lot of trees! Some might see plantations like this as a negative, but in line with Garnica’s ethical standpoint, poplar plantations are not foreboding and dissolute with dense canopies bereft of life – these modern plantations are light, open and airy and well managed. The trees are mature for use at around seven years and of course capture tons of CO2 during the growing process. Fast-growing plantations are a credible answer to the growing demand for forest products. In this sense, poplar is one of the most sustainable species, and its lumber is becoming increasingly
popular as a replacement for tropical species, because, among other features, it grows four times faster than other coniferous and tropical species and is a local resource. Convinced that forest products will regain their leading role in consumption against other materials and other non-sustainably managed wood species, Garnica manages extensive poplar plantations across Europe that are PEFC and FSC certified.

Only when the tree has reached its optimal growth is it logged and processed at one of the mills. Garnica’s plywood product range is characterised by its lightness, stability, surface quality and machinability. All this is possible thanks to its poplar core. These qualities and the variety of finishes available have created a versatile product range, at highly competitive prices thanks to its optimised production process and its closeness to the marketplace. There is a clear trend that end-users and manufacturers are looking for alternative species to the old fashioned tropical options coming from the other side of the world, often with spurious claims about the provenance and stewardship. In the UK, poplar has, until fairly recently, been a relatively unknown species, but as the trend for

greener products continues to gather momentum in this country, the supply chain is rediscovering and sourcing European-made plywood which is light in weight, competitively priced, and offers better performance compared to that which customers have previously experienced. At Garnica’s headquarters, a sizeable team of technical, R&D and export specialists are on hand to ensure all markets are being served efficiently and evolving industry regulations are adhered to, by improving performance properties. At the time of our visit, the covers were being pulled back on a considerable investment into an in-line facility for digitally-printed plywood veneers – just one development currently being explored and trialled by the company, and proof that the Garnica business more than lives up to its mantra of ‘challenging the ordinary’. Classical inspiration from Wilton Carpets at Hardwick Hall A striking carpet full of classic design cues and woven by Wilton Carpets now graces the Colman Suite, Crush Bar, corridors and lounge areas of Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire. “We worked with Space I.D to develop a carpet design that referenced the classical elegance of Hardwick Hall’s 18th century architecture,” explains Sam Dean, senior designer at Wilton Carpets. “Through blending sophisticated contemporary geometrics with elegant florals and classic fret borders, we’ve managed to achieve the difficult balance between historic reference and modern intention. A bordered design such as this is also a great way to define individual areas, at the same time giving a unified look.” Installed by Pocklington Carpets, the 850m2 of bespoke carpet were manufactured in Wilton’s Wiltshire factory, axminster woven in an 80% British wool and 20% nylon blend for wear and appearance retention. Mid-20th century design is making a comeback in the residential sector, which can also be seen in the more unique hotels in East London,” she says. On the first day of the show, visitors can also find out the winners of the Independent Hotelier and Outstanding New Hotel 2017 in the final of the Independent Hotel Awards, in association with Sky. Sleepeezee’s new sleep designs on show Sleepeezee Sleepeezee recently resecured its Royal Warrant, awarded to it by HRH the Prince of Wales, for supplying beds and mattresses to his households. This is in recognition of the continued high level of quality and service the company has achieved over the last five years – it has now held this award for 25 years. In addition to working with the Royal households, Sleepeezee successfully works alongside some of the most luxurious hotels in London and beyond, supplying to order through its contract team. New lighting options Elstead Lighting Elstead Lighting launched its 2017 supplement catalogue at Decorex in September featuring more than 350 new products including many great models from the UK design team and USA partners: Feiss, Hinkley, Quoizel and Kichler. Pictured is the dramatic Oberlin Orb, available in three sizes which are great for foyer or living spaces. The medium and large models have two integrated LED modules that shine light from top and bottom to illuminate the clear crystal beads. The Surface & Materials Show Variety and fascination were everywhere at the recent Surface & Materials Show, held at the NEC in Birmingham in October as part of UK Construction Week.
Fascinating products from elegant wallpaper in on-trend botanical themes from rising star Kit Miles Studio, to fine wood flooring from the experts Barham & Sons and from intriguing pergolas and ‘air walls’ made of hi-tech grids by I-Mesh, to woven wire solutions with a retro feel from Amron Associates could be seen at this year’s edition. Innovators Alusid explored the use of texture in materials, while Pintark by Loco Design showcased beguiling coverings in leather and metal. In terms of kitchen and bathrooms, beautiful finishes including Cosentino worktops from Stephen James Kitchens and glorious Grespania tiles on the Ocean Bathrooms stand, plus decorative and durable wall treatments from Formica, Dural, The Panel Co and Fibo
were on show. Visitors discovered advanced exterior finishes from Fundermax and the glamorous metallic effects of Solide Signature from Ayyape. Once again curated by award-winning experts Material Lab, the central feature at the Surface & Materials Show gathered an overview of the latest innovations, in collaboration with sponsors Johnson Tiles and Dulux. January Furniture Show A smart new look to the event, the website and the marketing campaign means that planning for the 2018 January Furniture Show is in full swing. The four-day furniture and furnishing exhibition returns to the NEC in Birmingham from 21st-24th January. 21st-24th January 2018 BNEC, Birmingham januaryfurnitureshow.com With a new hall identity and boasting more exhibitors than the previous three years, the show will again be a destination event for the whole of the UK furniture industry. In excess of 500 companies will exhibit, ranging from new and developing brands who are first time exhibitors, to long established brands with plenty of show experience. Halls 1 and 2 will be named Premium Design, and will feature high-end and contemporary UK and International brands, with all the favourites including Duresta, Baker, Italia Living and Skovby returning. Hall 2 will also be home to the Flooring Showcase as before, but will be joined by the Fabric Pavilion this time around. All things colourful, bright and decorative will remain in Hall 3, the Decorative Accessories hall, as it becomes awash with lighting, art, mirrors, soft furnishings, ornamental items and kitchenware delivered by some of the biggest names in interior furnishings including Libra, Pacific Lifestyle and Gallery Direct. Hall 4 will be the Living & Dining Hall, and will be the place to be for mainstream living and dining furniture. New looks and designs for every type of home will be on display from big names including the German giants of inventive bedroom storage and wardrobe systems - Weimann, Rauch and Nolte. Joining them will be UK experts which produce a great variety of affordable collections, including VIDA Living, Heartlands and Value Mark. Hall 5 will again be home to some of the giants of upholstery, beds and mattresses. Known as Living & Beds, this hall sees the return of Buoyant, Lebus, Scan Thor, Hestia, MiBed, and Breasley among many others. With their products furnishing thousands of UK homes, Hall 5 will be a hotspot for buyers with new designs on every stand. It isn’t just the halls that will have a smart look. The new show website will feature a new and advanced product search, a facility to make a favourites list and see where exhibitors
are in the show, as well as detailed information about the exhibitors and their products. There will also be an enhanced news section with upto-the-minute information about new products and show highlights. Contract buyers will be able to get information in advance about companies who are geared up to the unique demands of contract orders and supply, and those who can offer tailor made packages for large-scale
projects or individual schemes. Laraine Janes, co-director of the January Furniture Show, says: “The 2018 show will be full of excellence.
