SCUTTLEBUTT MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE HIRAM I. BEARSS MARINE CORPS LEAGUE –DET #089 Indianapolis, Indiana EDITOR: GARY D. NASBY

From the Helm Gary D. Nasby- Commandant Hiram I. Bearss Det. #089

My thoughts to all HIB members: 2014. A new year. New beginnings. I hope everyone has better health, more wealth, better relationships, more friends, and more happiness in their lives. Sounds great huh? But many of us will not be able to achieve all of these goals for one reason or another. Many of us have probably made some kind of a resolution to better ourselves. How many of us will keep them. I know every year I make them and fail at most. This is the purpose of the Marine Corps League as we were chartered: “ We are a veterans / military service organization that was Chartered by an Act of Congress for the purposes of promoting the interests of the U. S. Marine Corps; to provide camaraderie and assistance to Marines, as well as to their widows and orphans; and to preserve the traditions of the U. S. Marine Corps.” My resolution this year is to work harder to achieve this part of our charter: “ to provide camaraderie and assistance to Marines, as well as to their widows and orphans; “. That means you our membership. 1– Many of you I have yet to meet– I will try to contact you 2- I see the same people all the time at meetings and functions– expect a call from me to find out why you aren’t there. What are you missing, what do you expect from us, from your membership. 3- Are you in need of something?- What can we do to help? 4- Are you upset at someone or something that happened in the Detachment in the past? - Let’s talk and fix it– Remember Semper Fidelis, Always Faithful, Brothers forever? I don’t know when, but expect a call from me this year to find out these answers. I intend to keep this resolution. PS: Call me if you don’t want to wait to hear from me. http://indymarines.org/docs/ I am available at for your comments and discussion:

Commentary from Jim Wade– Central Division Aide de Campe– Indiana

To be an effective leader in the Corps or in the League, you must be thinking and doing what is necessary for the survival of your unit. I sometimes think as if I were in a combat situation. The company is pinned down. I look over and the machine gunner is on his last belt, and when it runs out, we will be over run by the enemy. I can see the belts of ammunition but I know I must expose myself to the enemy and will probably be wounded or killed, but if I lay there, we will all be killed. A marine will jump up, run and get the ammo, and even wounded, he will get it back to the Machine gun crew. A leader must be on fire, he must love the Corps and his marines. He can not be self serving. I would suggest that every leader read the two books about Chesty Puller. He had a very down to earth method of dealing with Marines. And it was effective. There are other Marine leaders, like Lou Diamond Phillips, or Ray Davis, and we need to understand how they led from the front. I keep warning every Detachment about the "Civilian Virus" . If one falls into this mode of thinking, he will fail as a Marine Leader. Another thing, you must be true. You can't fake how you truly feel..If you truly care about your people, your unit, it will show. Remember the words of your Drill Instructors, or your NCO leaders. Study the Guidebook for Marines and the traits of Leadership. A leader can not be selfish. He also must have good confidence in himself and his abilities, and also work to improve himself as often as he can. There are times when I have asked opinions from other PDC's or from past Detachment Commandants. I feel that another's way of looking at a problem, just might be a better solution, but I don't have to use it. the choice is up to me, but is my choice the right one ? Unit survival is the most important thing. 4

The red cover is the beginning of the Marine Corps League Uniform. When wearing his you are considered to be in uniform. From this all other parts of the uniform is built. Consider becoming a proud member of the League and buying a cover from the Quartermaster Bud Albright. Semper Fi. 9
