SCUTTLEBUTT MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE HIRAM I. BEARSS MARINE CORPS LEAGUE –DET #089 Indianapolis, Indiana EDITOR: GARY D. NASBY

And this year I had the privilege of being one of the stations in the initiation process. That is all I can say. Those who are PDD’s know what I am talking about. If you are not a Devil Dog, think about becoming one. “It is an Honor and a privilege to be a Devil Dog!” Next year in Charleston, WV all Devil Dogs from Pup To PDD, who register at the Dog House will receive a special 75th anniversary MODD Dog Tag that can be engraved with your info and worn alone on your dog collar or with your original Dog Tag. After the Grand Growl, the mold will be destroyed and the tag will no longer be available. If you are a Pound 111 Devil Dog (red collar) this would be a great fun time to plan a trip to become a PDD. Something special this year was that the Chief Devil Dog obtained a Staff made of wood from Belleau Wood, and it rests in a base filled with dirt from Belleau Wood and was christened into service from water from the Devil Dog fountain at Belleau Wood. Belleau is the place where in 1918 in a battle with the Germans we got our nickname of, "Teufelshunde"- Hell Hound or Devil Dog, because of our fierce way of fighting. Start saving now to go, don’t miss this

August 4th– 9th—MCL National Convention: Myself and Jim Wade traveled to Grand Rapids Michigan to attend the Marine Corps League National Convention. Let me assure you that you have not lived until you listen to 4.5 hours of Jim’s Tank Lecture! We met up there with Bud and Martha Albright, and other members of the Department of Indiana, including Department Commandant Anne Hunsinger. Jim and I Represent the Detachment at each Business Session, and voted on some issues that are going to affect you. There was no vote for election of Officers as each ran unopposed. Commandant is Jim Touhy– 2nd term, Sr, Vice– John Kolvolchek, Jr. Vice– Richard Gore, JA– Ben Cero. Our Central Division Vice Commandants remain Nik Makaroff, and Ray Daily as Asst. Our voting strength for Indiana was 1447 members out of 59,904– 523 votes and 37 delegates registered. One change that passed is that life membership for 61 and over has changed to 65 and over and the $150 has changed to $200. Many issues were tabled and sent to committee as they had not been through that process yet. All others remain the same. I will send out the other passed By-Law changes as I receive them. Sunday upon arrival at the hotel and check in was taken up by registrations at the MCL and at the Kennel Dog House for MODD. That evening was taken up by meeting with my old frieds from my New York Detachment and Department. Jim (not Wade), I hope your credit card has recovered to the black. Monday morning started with the raising of Colors at 0800 with all in formation, something that I always make as it brings back the Esprit de Corps in me. The rest of the day was consumed with business meetings, some interesting, some tedious, but all important in the running of the League. That evening Marine Wade and myself took the Beer Tour, since Grand Rapids is known as the Microbrewery capital of the World. It was an early evening as we were still tired from the night before. Tuesday again consisted of business meetings all day, which we both attended, and that night was a fairly quiet night consisting of Marine Wade (not a dog in the MODD) finding the Chief Devil Dog’s hospitality room and making himself at home. Talk about the fox in the henhouse! After some lengthy coaxing since he was have such a great time, I finally got him out of there without him getting mauled by the packs of Dogs in there. Wednesday as usual is MODD day with the Grand Growl, and initiation of I believe 200+ DD to the Rank of Pedigree Devil Dog. This is always a fun time and a great tradition of the MODD,

chance! The 2015 MCL National Convention was voted on to be in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort. Room rates are $94/ night with breakfast for 2, free wi-fi, free parking. The date is August 7-15, 2015. Sounds like a great time there too. Thursday again was business meetings that we attended, and a quiet meeting out to dinner with members of the Dept. of Indiana, and an early night hitting the sack. Fridays business meeting ended after awards and election of next years officers, and Jim and I made our way back to Indiana, since neither of us wanted to be the date of the other to the “Grande Banquet”. All in all it was an informative, meeting of old friends, useful and fun trip. Your Detachment was well represented and your colors were displayed there for which we were given a Battle Streamer. I have come back with a renewed passion to move our Detachment forward to become the best in the Department of Indiana. Lastly keep our troops in harms way in your thoughts and prayers. I am available at for your comments and discussion: Phone- (317) 855-8798 1
