Prostate cancer screenings at VA hospitals don't follow guidelines for elderly, study says

Sorry about the lateness of this months newsletter, but I have found time in short supply recently. Since Christmas we have been working many hours at the Barracks trying to get our new addition completed and sealed up for winter. This addition will give us the needed storeroom for records, museum items, and tables and chairs clearing out the Main hall for rentals. We have added a new entryway which I am sure you will be impressed with. In this entryway will be 5 memorial Sconce lighting units, on which for a donation of $100 a brass plate will be attached in your name. This is a great way to donate to the Marine Foundation and to become a part of the history of our building. Contact me or Charlie Haislip if you wish to sponsor one of these lights. Secondly we as you have probably heard are helping the Wounded Warrior Regiment bring 40-50 Wounded Warriors to the Superbowl weekend. One of the things we are doing is hosting a VIP invite only Texas style BBQ on Friday night February 3rd for these Marines and support staff from 5-7 pm. Only those with invitations, or who are working the event will be allowed entry. This is to lesson the strain on these inured Marines and allow them to eat a meal in peace without everyone wanting to meet and greet them. From 7-9 pm the Barracks is open to all HIB Detachment members to come and meet and greet these Marines. There will be dignitaries, Colts Cheerleaders, News media and some other TBD happenings at this time. I hope to see as many Detachment members as possible come ant show your support for what these Marines have sacrificed.

Louise C. Walter, MD, is a a geriatrician at the UCSF-affiliated San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. (Medical Xpress) -- Veterans Affairs hospitals screen elderly men with limited life expectancies for prostate cancer at surprisingly high rates, even though guidelines recommend against such screening, according to a study led by a physician at the UCSF-affiliated San Francisco VA Medical Center (SFVAMC).

_______________________________ by Ron Seman The Department of Veterans Affairs is working to significantly reduce the average time needed to obtain health-care records from private physicians with the help of a private contractor and the Internet to speed claims decisions. "We are committed to harnessing the best technology and the brightest minds in the government and private sector to ensure veterans receive the benefits they have earned." One innovation is using a private contractor to assist VA in collecting health-care records. When private medical records support a veteran's application for benefits, a contractor will quickly retrieve the records from the healthcare provider, scan them into a digital format and send the material to VA through a secure transmission. This pilot project hopes to validate initial estimates that specialized contract can yield records required to process veterans' disability compensation claims in seven to 10 days instead of VAs average 40 days. VA officials emphasize that in all cases veterans must sign documents approving the release of their medical records to the department from private health-care providers. The test is expected to involve about 60,000 records requests among regional benefits offices in Phoenix; New York City; St. Louis; Portland, Ore.; Chicago; Anchorage, Alaska; Indianapolis; and Jackson, Miss.

As this poster explains, we are assisting the Wounded Warrior Regiment, to make this a memorable experience for these Marines. HIB and the Marine Foundation are hosting a VIP invitation only BBQ for them on February 3rd at Marine Barracks Indy. We are in need of funds to supply the other items on this list and more ie; handicapped bus and driver, dinners etc. To this end and to help raise funds a program sponsor book is being published to recognize donors/sponsors. There will be 4 levels of sponsorship: Bronze: $1-$100, Silver: $101-$499, and Gold: $500-$999 and Platinum $1000 and above. I know times are tough, and money is short with the holidays and everything else happening in your lives, but I am asking each of you to consider giving to this book. It will only be hard on you for one time to do this. Think about how many hard times these Marines have to endure for the rest of their lives.
