North Hill Hotel, Green Room & Warehouse - Colchester Since the initial refurbishment of the North Hill Hotel and the launch of The Green Room, business has been good … The Green room has established itself as a popular lunch and evening destination and the rooms have had high booking levels, but not satisfied with what they have already achieved and somewhat restricted by space on this tight site, Rob & John have planned early this year an extension to add much-needed rooms; a meeting room facility and to enlarge the kitchen in order to keep pace with the added demand. Our part was to fit out the new kitchen area. Although pretty straightforward, it made a huge difference extending what was a cramped space in to a much-needed, flowing kitchen. The new rooms are a delight too - especially those in the roof which have been finished to a very high

standard that the guests will love. The boardroomstyle meeting room will attract many new customers locally for those wanting somewhere close to the centre of town to hold training, conferences and larger events. Lastly, new carpets have been laid throughout the lounge and dining area. This possibly has the greatest impact and one that the customers will instantly recognise and see how things have changed. But what hasn’t changed is the appeal of the Green Room with its warm friendly nature; like a well-run continental hotel, it’s not big and corporate and neither is it small and typically family-run, so offers the best of both. Food is always first class and the menu offers a nice balance.

Best-kept secret! What you may not be aware of is that Rob and John also operate the Warehouse Bar & Grill in Chapel Street North just off Head street and a stone’s throw from North Hill and the High Street. The Warehouse has been operating under its new stewardship for about a year now. It has been gradually building on its reputation and quietly getting on with business as it welcomes customers old and new. Just recently, we were asked to assist in installing a monster new char grill for the new menu launch. For any good grill house to survive you have to have the best in the way of a char grill. We chose an old favourite - Blue Seal - because at nearly a metre wide, this big powerful brute will cook steaks just as they should be, the locally-sourced steaks being at once sealed and caramelised to perfection by the roasting hot grill-bars. With the

addition of a resting plate to one side, the steak then sits and rests, which allows the natural fibres to relax so it becomes succulent and tender. It’s a bold step by the guys to go for the grill market as meat is still at a premium price; however my feeling is that confidence is retuning and we are beginning to eat out more regularly so if it’s a treat special occasion or you just fancy a well-priced lunch menu then give the new Warehouse a look. The building is beautiful and the restaurant area is quirky with several levels, making for great natural acoustics. So don’t just order a pizza from somewhere - order instead something special from the grill menu at the Warehouse. It’s the best-kept secret in town, but let’s not keep it to ourselves!

Oriental Cuisine, Cattawade Street Established 14 years and located just off the A137 in Cattawade Street, Brantham, Oriental Cuisine is popular with both the locals and clientele who come from far and wide, lured by its fabulous selection of food ... Oriental Cuisine’s menu selection is extensive and their set dinners offer a fine choice in either a Szechuan or Peking style, however on this occasion we opted for the 4 course 'Eat As Much As You Like' buffet at £14.50 per person. We chose from a selection of starters, well presented on a large plate; crispy seaweed, szechuan ribs, prawn toast, chicken satay, breaded mushroom, won ton, chilli ribs, crispy pancake roll and samosas, along with oriental chicken, a popular new dish, shredded smoked chicken and chicken lettuce wrap, all of which were thoroughly enjoyed.

Tommy Kwok (centre), manger of Oriental Cuisine with daughter Gar, and Trot, Tommy’s long time customer and friend.

was very good. Nothing was too much trouble. Tommy has many year's experience and it really shows, he was friendly, relaxed, calm and competent. In previous years Tommy, with the help of his long-time friend Trot, have raised over £24,000 organising charity events held at the restaurant.

Then on to our main dishes; shredded chilli beef, a particular favourite of mine, singapore noodles plus ribs in kim do sauce and chicken in sambai sauce, both something we’ve never tried before. Needless to say, we were well-catered for. The staff at Oriental Cuisine are friendly, polite and efficient and Tommy Kwok the manager, is regularly on hand, walking round the tables greeting people. We found the service from Gar, Tommy’s daughter, was first class throughout the evening and attention to detail from everyone

We found Oriental Cuisine Chinese restaurant’s food and service to be of a high quality, tasty and very reasonably priced. We thoroughly recommend the Oriental Cuisine Chinese restaurant and will certainly remember to make sure we book early for Christmas. Call Oriental Cuisine on 01206 397269 to book a table, or order a takeaway using their home delivery within 5 miles of the restaurant.

“Pippin” through the decades - 35 years of a cherished family brand at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf and Spa The origins of the ‘Pippin’ brand name for the Peake family goes back 40 years. It was first used as a component of the Copella apple juice brand which Devora and Bill Peake invented in the family kitchen in 1969 – the “COP” part of the name was derived from the delicious apple variety “Cox’s Orange Pippin” - then the end of her youngest daughter’s name, Carmella, was added … The family then took ownership of a vegetarian wholefood restaurant, French Bistro and wholefood shop in Hampstead High Street in 1976 which at the time was the largest vegetarian restaurant as well as one of the biggest stockists of Copella in London. They named the restaurant Pippin, after the apple variety, and it was launched at a celebration party by Monty Python’s Graham Chapman. Other regular clientele included Eurythmics singers Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, comedians Peter Cook and June Whitfield, and actor Alan Bates, who all lived locally in Hampstead and frequented the restaurant on a sometimes daily basis for their macrobiotic and vegetarian treats. Pippin was famous for serving delicious freshly made savoury delights, unusual salads, desserts, bread and cakes. Upstairs the Frenchstyle Bistro was open in the evenings and delighted customers with its great live music. All three of Devora and Bill’s daughters, Susanna, Tamara and Carmella, ran the restaurant for up to a year each after leaving university and it became a great hive of activity and success, often catering for up to 500 people a day. It was eventually sold in 1983 so that the family could concentrate their efforts on their businesses closer to home, and the girls became more involved with Copella, Boxford Fruit Farms and Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa. As the last four decades have seen so many contrasts and changes, so has the Pippin name. It is now

thriving in the form of Pippin Shop at Stoke by Nayland Hotel where it offers an Aladdin’s Cave of hand-made gifts, jewellery and toys, top quality foods and wines, seasonal cards and decorations, and a myriad of delightfully quirky items. It also stocks the largest range of ladies’ designer golf and leisurewear in the region. “Pick your own” Hampers and Boxes are a speciality of the shop. They are exquisitely wrapped and packed on site and make fabulous gifts at any time of year. In season Pippin also sells all the delicious fresh fruits which are still grown on the family farm surrounding the hotel - apples, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. In times when we seem to only hear the stories of doom and gloom for businesses, it is heartening to see a familyowned and well-loved brand that not only has a great history, but continues to offer great products and friendly, personal service. If, like most of us, you dread heading into town to do your Christmas shopping, you will find the relaxed Pippin experience a breath of fresh air – especially with free parking! As an added bonus, you can enjoy a free cup of freshly-brewed tea or coffee for two by the fire in the Hotel Lounge if you spend over £10. That has to make it worth a visit! Pippin at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa is open 7 days a week from 8am – 7pm. For more information please call 01206 265823 or visit
