The Peldon Rose – Peldon, Colchester From time to time it’s a pleasure to preview some of our existing customers. This month we have taken the opportunity to revisit an old acquaintance, one you may be familiar with, but if not, The Peldon Rose is somewhere you should add to your list … says Andy Mumford If you appreciate fine modern dining, traditional service and the ambiance of historic surroundings, then you’ll love The Peldon Rose – the famous Essex coaching Inn that has stood majestically at the approach to Mersea Island since the early 15th century. When you visit, you will quickly sense you’ve arrived at a special place – a much-loved country Inn and restaurant that attracts guests and diners from across the whole of East Anglia and beyond. You will always receive a warm welcome, whether you’ve come to explore great cuisine, relax with a drink in their cosy oakbeamed bar, participate in a special event, or spend the night in one of the charming guest rooms.


As supplier, we have worked in both the kitchen and front of house areas, updating equipment and crockery alike. Working with Brendan Timms, Head Chef and his team, is always fun. Brendan and his team are regular visitors to our Moorside showroom, where we explore different serving ideas, looking for new and quirky dishes. I love what I do as an ex chef of some years and I miss not only the kitchen and its frenzied atmosphere, but also the creative side of the job, along with the satisfaction of knowing that a restaurant of hungry diners have been served. I don’t miss the long hours and hot conditions, however meeting up with these guys from the The Peldon Rose, allows me to still use my creative talents, suggesting new themes and ideas and keeping in touch with

differing menus and ingredients that are now available. I think that one of the things that I like so much about The Peldon Rose is its charm and diversity. Essentially it’s still a traditional coaching Inn, its frontage is always inviting and its street appeal has a great lure being situated just before the River Stour that separates the mainland from Mersea Island. The Peldon Rose is so easy to find and really only just a short drive from Colchester. As you enter the inn, you are greeted by flagstone floors and a traditional beamed bar area, where you can enjoy a bar snack or just a quite pint, or alternatively, book a table in the conservatory with its high ceiling. It’s got a really special feel and If that’s not enough, then weather permitting and bearing in mind,

that since they announced we are not only in recession, but in the midst of a drought, it seems to have rained continually lately, then if it’s fine, you will not get a better garden and terrace area to sit in, with plenty of wooden tables, beautiful lawns and a small brook to one side the garden area that is tucked away from the road and quite tranquil. If all of this is not enough, then The Peldon Rose has the offer of a private dining or function room. You enter via a small staircase off the bar, but once you have climbed the stairs you are in another world, adorned with a lovely dark wood table and beautiful cutlery, crockery and glassware, that will make you feel oh so special. One

of the surprises is that if you use this facility, it is not going to break the bank. Prices are really very reasonable, so if you fancy a special occasion or just rowing the boat out a little then enquire of its availability, with one of Mike’s team. Each month I write about different places in and around the Essex countryside, many of you will know I’m very passionate about what we have to offer in this county, this was strangely backed up this week by a call from one of my suppliers who enquired “How’s Business?” I answered, as I have for the last couple of years now, “Good, but always tough.” Oddly his reply was that Essex was his best performing area which goes to prove, that we are bucking the trend and we have got things to shout about. The Peldon Rose is one of many terrific eating houses in the area, I’m always stunned how every month we are involved in new ventures from beach cafes to fine dining restaurants. strips and lay onto the top of the egg mix, gently press down to make sure the salmon is covered by the egg. Sprinkle the top with the grated cheese then bake in the oven for about 30 minutes or until the frittata is set and has a golden brown top. Allow to cool in the pan for about 5 minutes before turning out. Place a board over the pan then quickly flip over. Place your serving plate over the inverted frittata then flip over again for a perfectly presented dish.


Smoked Salmon and Pea Frittata Serves 6-8

Ingredients Teaspoon Olive Oil Knob Butter 1 Medium onion finely sliced 450g Cooked New Potatoes sliced 150g Frozen Peas

6 Eggs Salt and Pepper to taste ½ Teaspoon Dried Basil 100ml Milk 100g Smoked Salmon 100g Grated Cheese

A frittata is a great way to use up left-overs, and other combinations to try are Ham and Tomato, Broccoli and Stilton, Mixed peppers, Spinach and Feta or anything else in the fridge you need to use up! You can serve the frittata warm from the oven or it is equally nice cold, when it makes a lovely gluten- free centrepiece for a picnic, or just to take out in your lunch box.

Method Preheat the oven to 180c. You will need to use a non-stick frying pan approximately 24cm diameter which is oven proof. Very slowly sweat the onions with the oil and butter in the pan until they are soft but not coloured. Add the sliced potatoes and gently fry until they are hot through, then add the frozen peas. In a separate jug beat the eggs, salt and pepper, basil and milk. Make sure the potato, peas and onion are evenly distributed in the pan then pour the egg mix over. Cut the salmon into
