Prevention... Maintenance... Cure What do you think of first when you hear prevention? Vaccination? Worming? Fleas and ticks? Yes, all of the above come under this category. But what about other things like nutrition, muscle and skeletal balance, joint function, teeth and mouth health amongst others? If you address a slight muscle imbalance or injury early on you can save yourself and your pet many problems further down the line. When Luna shows any signs of reluctance to jump into a high truck she has an adjustment as soon as possible and within days she will be back to form.

What about maintenance? If your pet is on long term medication you run the risk of side effects, usually the risk of kidney and liver damage. In many cases you can replace at least part of the medication with a course of acupuncture, which is extremely safe and can be given without any problems into high age. Coco is clearly very relaxed during her acupuncture. She started the course as she was walking very wide legged behind and had problems jumping up onto the sofa or another favourite spot to have a snooze. While she still has the occasional dose of painkillers, she is now very bouncy and happy without any help from drugs.

Can the holistic approach cure things? I can only say a resounding yes to this, in the majority of cases the issue can be solved. If the problem is very severe or longstanding my approach will require patience and commitment. This is Simza, looking for the needles I am holding in my hand - she does love her acupuncture. After having a foal last year Simza found life a struggle, she was lame on her near hind and lost a lot of topline, ie muscle on the back and her hindquarters. Miranda, her owner, feared she might never be able to ride her again. After several acupuncture sessions Simza recovered completely, put her weight back on and goes out for hacks again.
