gcm from the editor always seem to have a little spring in my step at this time of year. I don’t know if it is because my batteries are recharged thanks to a few weeks away from the desk or the anticipation of the possibilities that await with the beginning of the year, what I like to think of as a clean slate. For this issue of GCM, the team and I focused on bringing you a fresh take on not only the way we go about our everyday lives, but also the way we interact with our amazing Gold Coast region. We sampled new tastes (see Kirra’s sparkling review of RACV Royal Pines Resort’s new addition Videre on page 82) revisited our favourite relaxation retreats (see page 90) and put some local talent through their paces (see our fashion feature with local Anthea Page on page 37). I also chatted to born-and-bred Gold Coaster Jesinta Campbell who recently graced our screens on Channel Nine’s Celebrity Apprentice Australia. This young lady really is one-in-a million and her refreshing take on life and the opportunities that have been presented to her is truly inspiring. I also picked the brain of local entrepreneur David Prior, the head honcho at Five:am yoghurt. Not only is this great product 100 per cent certified organic, but it is Australian made. David’s take on life and how we treat the world around us is not only insightful, but intriguing. I was interested to discover that as a practising yogi and avid surfer, David loves nothing more than coming home to Tallebudgera to spend a few hours at his favourite local break, Currumbin Alley. We are just so lucky here on the Coast. Make sure you get out there and enjoy it while the Summer sun holds us in its gaze. Enjoy.

Presented by The Arts Centre Gold Coast and coinciding with the 2012 Quiksilver Pro and the inaugural Bleach Festival, Sons of Beaches features a surf documentary and installation that examines the development of surfing in the 1970s and the somewhat subversive culture that surrounds the period, as well as a look at this significant time in Australia’s living memory. Produced by Glenn Blight and Geoff Charters, the film features original footage from a 16mm surf film by Steve Core that was shown at the 1972 World Titles. 20 January / February 2012
What has the journey to get to where you are now been like for Amy Meredith? As much of a cliché as it sounds, our career has definitely been a massive roller-coaster ride. We’ve been together for about five years now and like any band we just started jamming in a garage and not really thinking anything would come from it. We got a lucky break and here we are now. It’s all uphill from here hopefully. We’re doing our next album independently, which is exciting and slightly scary, but I think it’s a good time for us to do that. Everything feels pretty good at the moment. Where did the name Amy Meredith come from? We used to jam all the time in my garage and my dad had this wakeboarding boat named Amy Meredith. We were looking at that boat every day so we just kind of tentatively named our band after the boat. Dad bought it off someone else so even he doesn’t know why it was called that, but someone out there knows so it’s our lifelong quest to try and figure out why we’re called Amy Meredith. What will the new album be like? We’ve really grown as a band and as musicians so it’s a little bit edgier and a bit more mature than the last record. It’s still going to be quite catchy as everyone would know from the single we just released, “Pick up your Tricks”. We’ll still be keeping the same formula though and making fun music. You’ve collaborated with some big names on this album, what was that like? It’s weird working with people who have worked with absolute superstars. When we were recording we worked with Matt Hales from Aqualung and Ted Berner, who’s
done a lot of stuff with Katy Perry and Ke$ha. It was pretty humbling, but definitely a good experience learning how these guys work. They really have their eyes set on what they want the outcome to be. For example they’ll go through a guitar tone that we want and we’ll think it sounds fine, but they’ll literally go through 10 guitars and spend hours trying to get the perfect tone. You’re heading to LA in January? Yes, we’re heading over in January or February, but we were actually over there a few weeks ago recording too. We were actually planning on releasing an EP before Christmas, but it didn’t happen so we’re keeping the songs we recorded to put on the new album. We do have a good little Christmas surprise for our fans actually. Joel and I have been working on remixing our whole Restless album and releasing that for free, so that’s exciting. The songs are going to be low key, summery, acoustic remixes, so that’s a nice little present. Where is Amy Meredith heading as a group? Overseas hopefully! Our plans with this album are to head international. We’ve just signed on with Vector Management in the States. They represent Ke$ha and Kings of Leon so we’re working with them to sort out a game plan on how to crack America. So 2012 is going to be a fun year for us!

gcm my career with Kirra Smith
Lisa Gray Manager at Pure Indulgence
I had an interesting childhood. My father is an auctioneer so I was exposed to hundreds of interesting and unusual things weekly and as a result our home was changing continually with my mother’s flair for decorating. I was born on the Gold Coast, completed 12 years of schooling here and am one of the few who can say they are Gold Coast born and bred. Dreams turned into reality when I followed in my father’s footsteps and became an auctioneer. After working with him for many years I decided it was time for a change and now work with my mother in our family business, established by her about 12 years ago. It started as a small establishment on the Isle of Capri and has since grown. We are now located at a larger showroom on Ashmore Road in Bundall. In our field you need to be both creative and business-minded and to combine the two at times can be a little challenging, but worth the effort for the end results. Being involved in our family business has always been important to me. At the end of the day it gives me great satisfaction to know we do everything to look after our clients in the best way possible. It can be demanding at times to work so closely with your family on a daily basis, but we all know what we have to do and the goals we are working towards will hopefully be beneficial to us all. Pure Indulgence is a unique store selling a variety of goods. We stock new, ex-display and estate pieces as well as importing products ourselves to bring that point of difference to the marketplace. One never knows what they’ll find when they walk through our doors, it’s forever changing. We also offer decorating consultancy to clients as well as providing assistance to props buyers for movie sets. It’s always rewarding to see our products in movie 22 January / February 2012
scenes and when you turn the pages of magazines. The merchandising in our showroom helps us provide assistance to clients who may not be sure which direction they want to go in. We are only too happy to guide them. Pure Indulgence is located in only one place on the Coast. Our interstate clients often suggest we should open in other locations. They enjoy the experience of stepping through our doors and being consumed by the overwhelming feeling of warmth and comfort our products can instil in them. It’s definitely not just a walkin-walk-out scenario; time is required to fully appreciate the immense variety we have to offer. Our showroom is not just a store, it’s a home away from home. The thing I love the most about our store is the vast array of ever-changing products, the friendly atmosphere and the continual support of our clients, many of whom have become great friends over the years. It’s not unusual for the day to begin and continue with numerous cups of coffee with clients as their decisions are made, and to follow on later in the day with a glass of wine or bubbles to celebrate special events with family or friends in a warm and loving environment. We want to keep our business a step ahead. We do this by making many trips overseas to keep up with current trends and sourcing exclusive pieces for our store. The influence of the overseas market definitely has an impact on the way people live their lives and what they aspire to own. We like to be able to provide our clients with pieces for their homes that can be hard to find as we all like a bit of individuality in our lives, and to own something that is different from what everybody else has. GCM Pure Indulgence is located at 95 Ashmore Road, Bundall. Phone 07 5527 6668.
Here at Fadi’s Hair we are a team of artists that are very passionate about our work. We have very dedicated staff and strive on making every experience the most desirable that the client can receive. JŃ inta there is a good chance you first heard the name Jesinta Campbell in 2010 as the Gold Coast beauty happily accepted the brilliant diamond-encrusted crown and the highly coveted title of Miss universe Australia. She has since continued her charity work with ReACh, something she defines as her passion, collected a few ambassador roles along the way and appeared on Channel nine’s Celebrity Apprentice Australia. gcm feature with Aimee Ley esinta’s voice is sleepy as she phones into the GCM offices early on a Thursday morning for our interview. I politely make small talk with the pageant princess while she wakes from her beauty sleep and before long she brings up the topic of her Gold Coast home. Jesinta is one of the few people who can proudly call herself Gold Coast born and bred and the seaside town holds a very special place in her heart. She completed her schooling here on the Gold Coast, first at Silkwood School and then Aquinas College, where she was School Captain in her final year. It was in this school environment that Jesinta tested the waters with her charity work and she became heavily involved in the community, participating in charity events and volunteer work. Jesinta was what you could call the perfect student, taking out the General Excellence Cup (for best all-round outstanding student), a youth achievement award for organising her own charity event and the senior drama award. She also scored a scholarship for Journalism at Bond University, but this was put on the backburner as the glittering prospects of a modelling career drew her to Sydney. With only $500 in her bank account and a one way plane ticket, Jesinta headed to the big smoke and just months later she was modelling in Shanghai on a two month contract.
This life-changing leap of faith is testament to the inspiring attitude Jesinta emulates in everything she sets her mind to. She makes the most out of every opportunity that comes her way and completes each task in her own sweet, endearing way. Most recently Jesinta was selected as one of 12 competitors on Channel Nine’s Celebrity Apprentice Australia. Right from the get-go Jesinta won over the audience (and Mr Mark Bouris from Yellow Brick Road) with her diligent yet hard-working ethic and ambitious nature. True to Jesinta’s character, her charity, REACH Australia, was at the forefront of her mind when making the decision to take up the opportunity. “The expectations [from Celebrity Apprentice Australia] were to learn something about myself and to raise as much money as possible for my charity and the other charities as well. I grew up a lot in those six weeks. I was put in tricky situations and I think I had to deal with them in a very adult way. I also learnt that sometimes when you see things and you think you can’t achieve them they actually are achievable and you just have to give them a shot. We were given challenges that I didn’t even know what I was doing, but I just gave it a go.” The contestants on Celebrity Apprentice Australia formed a melting pot of colourful personalities, including politician Pauline Hanson, dance guru Jason Coleman, agent to the stars Max Markson, singer Deni Hines and eventual winner comedian, Julia Morris. The concoction of talent and egos made for interesting viewing as the contestants attempted to work together in order to successfully complete their assigned tasks. Despite the setbacks, Jesinta ended up finishing third in the competition. “A lot of the time it was just a lot of fun and everyone had a ball, but there were moments where it was definitely challenging for me and it was hard work,” says Jesinta. “If I didn’t have that then I wouldn’t have learnt anything, so you just have to be grateful for these experiences. Obviously there were some characters that were pretty tricky to deal with, but other than that it was a lot of fun.” Jesinta continues to keep in touch with some of the contestants including AFL legend Shane Crawford, Julia Morris, Olympian Lisa Curry and Pauline Hanson. She insists she has even been in touch with Deni Hines since the show wrapped up, despite the two clashing heads during filming. “I was representing a charity that works with kids and I wanted to act in a way that showed kids no matter how low someone stoops you need to be the bigger person and leave with your dignity intact.” This is exactly what Jesinta managed to do through the series. But dealing with difficult people is something Jesinta has become accustomed to since her unfortunate experience with bullying

throughout school. When she was just 13 years old Jesinta was given a helping hand by Australian charity REACH, which helped instill Jesinta’s strong self-belief. Now that Jesinta has overcome her own personal demons she is insistent on giving back to the organisation that helped her out when she needed it the most. “As long as REACH is around I will support them,” says Jesinta. “They are such a fantastic organisation and the people involved are so incredible and selfless. It is just amazing what they do and you can see the results.” Jesinta raised $166,385 for the charity and the money has provided the organisation with a new home in Sydney (they are a Melbournebased organisation) that will enable them to have a headquarters, offices and a space where kids can visit and feel safe. Jesinta says it is seeing results like this that drives her to continue her charity work. “It is so incredible and gives me goose bumps to think about it,” says Jesinta. “But it wasn’t just me that raised all that money, it was the other contestants as well.” Post Celebrity Apprentice Australia Jesinta’s career has continued to bloom. She is the ambassador for Savior Faire Cosmetics and Asics, both brands that reflect Jesinta’s core values and beliefs. It is these roles that Jesinta feels most comfortable in and she happily spends her days attending auditions, campaign shoots, modelling and making appearances at social functions. She also landed the gig at Weekend Today presenting the weather over the two-week Christmas break and cohosted Channel Nine’s coverage of New Year’s Eve from Sydney Harbour. Jesinta says her aim is to have a career that is multi-faceted, a goal it seems she is already putting into practice. “I don’t just want to be a model or a TV presenter; I want to be a brand ambassador and a businesswoman. I want to continue modelling and really get into my television presenting as I am really enjoying that at the moment. Ultimately, in 10 year’s time I just want to be a mum and have a family of my own, so I want to make the most of everything and have fun, work hard and then retire,” she laughs. Although these goals are still in progress, there is no doubt Jesinta will exceed her own expectations in everything that she does. Gcm 25 January / February 2012

David Prior with fourth generation fa mily farmers Wendy a nd Peter Wallace, at their certified orga nic dairy farm.
gcm profile with Aimee Ley
GCM speaks to David Prior after the Gold Coast has experienced three days of unseasonal rain. Although he is in Melbourne he is stoked the Gold Coast has been blessed by the gods with the downpour as it will make everything fresh and green, and most importantly, the cows will be happy. As the founder of the 100 per cent Australian made and produced, certified organic yoghurt company Five:am, it is essential to David that the cows are in good spirits. avid doesn’t have a background in yoghurt production as you might expect. He does have years of experience in food packaging though (hence the super-funky biodegradable and reusable packaging of Five:am), and after the family packaging business was sold to a multinational company in 2007 David stood at a career crossroad.
“I was really lucky that I could decide what I wanted to do,” says David. “I wanted to be really proud of what we did so I decided to do something in the organic-food space. Not only was it a sound business proposition, but I was also giving people a healthy product that is great for the environment.” To get an idea about the clean-living environmentally friendly origins of Five:am yoghurt it helps to know a little about the company’s founder, David. The man is super healthy and he named his yoghurt company after his favourite time of morning when he rises each day to practise meditation and surf the day-long sets at Currumbin Alley. Not only is he a practising Yogi and an avid surfer, but he believes we should act environmentally and socially responsible in all that we do, a principle he has instilled in his product. “Organic means a product is free from chemicals and pesticides, so the farms have to be free of chemicals and pesticides for three years and the cows have to be free from antibiotics and growth hormones for three years. It means you are getting the most pure milk. When you spray farms with pesticides it also goes into the air and water and you are gradually degrading the earth. When you are out surfing and spend a lot of time in the water you become more conscious of the earth and it is natural to want to care for the environment.” David says the mass production of food seen in the past 100 years is an indication that what we are doing isn’t necessarily good for the people or the planet and the high rates of cancer in the developing world is testament to this. “We have to get back to the way we were, back to the natural way of producing food and the natural way of caring for the environment. With organic it not only doesn’t damage the environment, but it is regenerating the environment by using techniques that restore what was actually there before.” The Five:am business is located in Carrum Downs, a small town located halfway between Melbourne and Gippsland, where over 70 per cent of Australia’s organic milk is produced and where the milk for David’s yoghurt is sourced. Not only does Five:am tick the organic box, but its production also supports Australian farms. “One of the primary sources of our milk is a fourth-generation dairy farming family. They have been on the land for over a hundred years and are about to hand the business over to their son. I think it is great that we can work with people like that.” Having been in the market for just under a year, David is content with the growth his little company has experienced. “It has been a long journey, but it has been fantastic so far. Getting into the market and having people like the product and start to buy is just great. We have people commenting on our social media every day saying how much they love the yoghurt and it is just fantastic and incredibly rewarding to know that people are enjoying the product that we make.” GCM For an organic Australian-made alternative to your normal yoghurt pick up a tub of Five:am at Woolworths or visit fiveam.com.au. 27 January / February 2012
gcm Junior Report with Isabella Crowe
! t u O s ’ l o o h c S
It is the beginning of a whole new ball game for students about to embark on their first year of university studies. Read on for our junior reporter’s take on the transition from school to university. ecisions are at the heart of future success, and at times there are critical moments when they can be difficult, perplexing and nerve-racking. However, the boldest decisions are the safest and this applies when making decisions about university. Going to university has been something I’ve been looking forward to since beginning high school. Now that I have finally finished 12 years of schooling, I am entering another system of higher education while realising I will practically be entering another world. I didn’t think anything could be more nerve-racking than my transition from primary school to high school. Now I realise that was only a baby step. University is the final step before venturing into the ‘real world’ and the challenges encountered in my transition will be a step that I will adjust to or struggle with. After reviewing the endless amount of challenges I am going to encounter, I think my greatest transitional challenge is going to be the simple fact that I am going to be on my own. This challenge is in many ways bitter sweet. After all, I am going to have freedom, endeavouring on a new path into adulthood. It is believed that the more prepared a person is to face the similarities and differences, the more successful they might be in the long run.
High school and university are both educational grounds for a student to grow and enrich their lives with knowledge. Both places are full of experiences and filled with numerous memories, which I hope to make throughout the next four years of studying at university. While having a high school degree plays an important role in my future, a university degree will further my chance in the journalism industry and take me where I want to go. 28 January / February 2012
I know there are differences between high school and university, however, what I think is not always how it is. High school is considered as a continuation of elementary and middle school where one learns the basics of every form. There are rules and regulations that one cannot break, as the repercussions could end in suspension or expulsion. There is a time schedule that students have to abide by. Within the framework of system and order, there is also a social structure that one must maintain and live up to. This is beneficial, because a student at a young age learns the basic rules of work and life, such as not to come to school late and to not procrastinate. However, the main focus for myself, among others, is the acceptance of peers and not their scholarly duties. This is the stage of life when a student, like myself, must come to terms with what we are and what we will become. The many different choices I will make and the repercussions of those decisions will be mine and mine alone, because now I am an adult in university. Once at university, we realise that everything in high school was materialistic, and university is practical. In university, no-one would be concerned about the everyday dilemmas that surround them in high school, which is one of the main reasons for my great excitement to study at university. In university, one continues on their way of discovering who they are, and by the time they graduate they have discovered themselves and are comfortable in their own skin. By the end of my four-year journalism course I want to know exactly what field is best suited for me, where I belong, and I hope to make real friends who don’t care about ‘cliques’ or ‘popularity’. University prepares students to face the real world, and how to handle it. GCM

Not only is vintage clothing all the rage, but it is also an eco-friendly way to dress in style. Purchasing second-hand doesn’t necessarily mean looking second-best these days either, as more often than not fashionistas are passing on clothing they have only worn a few times. The vintage and second-hand trend has seen the rise of Gold Coast markets dedicated to fashion and accessories. Here are a few of our favourite treasure troves.

There’s nothing quite like it.
Gathering loved ones on the deck. Icy lemonade. Laughter in your eyes. An early morning beach walk, quietly serene. Salt spray rising from a smashing wave. Hazy and lazy. Barefoot on the bitumen. Licking mango juice from your fingers. Cricket and an outfielder knee-deep in the ocean. Flyaway hair and a backwards glance. The scorching sun changing the colours of the sky. Clasping the hand of your love. Long days and short conversations. Salt-encrusted smiles. Balmy breezes and short skirts. The warmth radiating from the sky. Sleeping in and stretching out. Diving into the stillness of a backyard pool. A picnic blanket. Sleeping under the stars. Roadtrips, sing-alongs and self portraits. A kaleidoscope.

ActIvAtE WIth nAturAL oIL The initial thought of applying oil to your face may seem a little contrived, but the facts are facial oils deliver serious results. They work by deeply penetrating the skin to deliver their natural plant ingredients, resulting in a smoother, more radiant complexion. There are plenty of varieties on offer ranging from Rosehip oil, consisting of 80 per cent fatty acids, which is essential for cell rejuvenation and skin-tissue repair. Given that it contains natural balancing properties it is suitable for all skin types and can be used to improve all types of skin ailments ranging from premature ageing to scarring and hyper-pigmentation. Another oil increasing in popularity is jojobaba oil which is naturally antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, hypo-allergenic, analgesic and contains powerful antioxidants, Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids and vitamins A, D and E. STEPS TO A PARTY FACE! need to look your best for that special occasion? there are a lot of things that you can do with just a few days’ notice to really brighten up your face. here is a guide to the way to dazzle.
glowiNg skiN Esteem stocks a wide range of cosmeceuticals. These are cosmetics with a powerful medically proven constituent, designed to improve and protect your skin. Among these are exfoliant agents. By using these exfoliant agents a little more regularly four to five days before the occasion, one can have skin at its glowing best on the special night. Microdermabrasion or a light chemical peel can have an even greater enhancing effect and are designed to be done with no recovery down time. However, if pigmented spots and red blood vessels are the problem, allow yourself a bit more time for Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to fade these away.
lipstick kiss The world of cosmetic injectables was set alight with the invention of non-animal stabilised hyaluronic acid (Restylane or Juvederm) in 1996. These are extremely safe, predictable and, in skilled hands, can give a very natural enhancement to lip-shape definition and size with only a day or two of swelling. The products now come with local anaesthetic and this has made the procedure even easier to use.
Bright eYes Anti-wrinkle injections around the eyes can smooth the lines away and give a gentle lift to the brow to show your eyes off to their maximum advantage. Frown lines and lines on the forehead can also be improved. These injections only take a couple of days to start to act and are so fine there is usually no sign that they are performed when done by experienced hands. Let your eyes shine on the big occasion, or every day.
the BlushiNg cheek If you watch make up artists apply make up, you will see they enhance cheek size and shape by creating a shadow below it, making an illusion that the cheek itself has more size. One can go a step beyond this illusion and actually enhance cheek shape and size with injectables. Bruising can usually be avoided and the cheeks’ shape and size can be tailored to naturally enhance your face.

paiNt Your Face At a recent conference in Sydney, one of Australia’s foremost make up artists, Rae Morris, wowed the crowd with her dramatic transformation of a volunteer from the audience. Even experienced facelift surgeons were impressed with the way she cleverly used her art to create the illusion of changes in contour of the facial features and the signs of ageing. Esteem’s professional make up artists can create that special look for you to let you be all you can be on that special occasion.
hair with Dare People ask me what the best way is to rejuvenate the face and I tell them good hair and make up. Sure it is not the answer they expect from a plastic surgeon, but good hair styling and clever use of make up are remarkably powerful tools for enhancing the appearance of the face. Have your hair shaped and styled and your make up done at Esteem in readiness for the special night. Express Beauty Package Wash and blow dry, full make up application and Mani Q nails. Just $99 (RRP $180) Available at Esteem Day Spa. Book now on 07 5539 1000.
heaD to toe Give your skin a healthy colour and glow with a designer spray tan from Esteem. Avoid the damage and risks of skin cancer from soaking up the harmful rays of the sun. It will only age and endanger you. The natural colours in the pigments used in spray tans at Esteem will give you that ‘fresh off the beach look’, without the dangers of the Queensland sun.
Nail it Of course to finish off the appearance perfectly, manicured nails are the ideal accessory. Esteem’s nail artist Di can shape and colour your nails with such expertise that you will be continually waving them in front of your face to attract attention!

gcm male GroominG with the esteemed Gentleman
MAn vS AGEInG Skincare deciphered. was fortunate to be invited to Melbourne for the Spring Carnival this year. I love horses and the punt so this was a trip of a lifetime for me. I must admit though, I couldn’t pick a winner the whole Spring Carnival. I’m pretty sure they had to send the SES to the back of Flemington to look for my tip on the Melbourne Cup. It hadn’t even reached the home straight by the time Dunaden was already sniffing the roses on his way back to the mounting yard.
skincare is based on scientifically proven, active ingredients that have the ability to repair, rejuvenate, restore and protect our skin. There are night and day formulations that have specific roles on the skin. Medical-strength anti-oxidants, Vitamin A to repair and correct the skin as we sleep, Vitamin C and E combined with AHAs (Alphahydroxy Acids) to exfoliate and refine the skin, and of course, medical-grade SPF 30 to protect our skin during the day. All medicalgrade skincare companies have these key ingredients in their formulations.
Oaks Day is, of course, the fashion highlight of the Carnival. I met up with a few of my old footy mates who now live in Melbourne and enjoyed the comforts of whatever corporate tent we could haggle our way into. The Melbourne trip came four weeks after my first-ever Botox treatment and I must say the compliments were flooding in. Apparently I looked younger, fresh, like I’ve just had a holiday, and was even asked if I had a new girlfriend. I can’t see any massive changes, but the creases and wrinkles around my eyes and forehead have totally gone and my skin looks tighter and shiny.
After receiving a complementary skin analysis and then being consulted on what my individual skin type needs, I was sold! Jane, my skin consultant, also explained that skincare is like an insurance to protect the investment of Botox and other treatments we get from a Medispa. The two work in combination in any anti-ageing treatment plan to achieve total, visible results.
When talking to the boys in Melbourne, I realised the Victorian boys are far better educated in anti-ageing than us rugged Queensland boys. Out of the seven boys, five regularly visit a Medispa for Botox and other cosmetic skin treatments. Apparently medical-grade skincare is all the rage for the boys too. Again I’m learning that education and ego are the only blocks men have from experiencing the treatments and antiageing secrets women have known about for years. There is a normal perception of a typical Australian man and we form ourselves to fit within these parameters, but what if these parameters moved or widened and taking care of your skin and looking good for your age was OK? What if we changed the game and challenged normal perception?
Next chapter I am moving in a totally new direction and looking at IPL hair removal vs waxing. Not sure what hair I will attack first, but I’m thinking a fresh hairless chest would look OK on the beaches this Summer. Gcm
It got me thinking. What if a normal Australian man could have great skin, look 10 years younger and pride himself on stepping outside the box and seeking professional help to look and feel better? My girlfriend thinks I’m creating a monster as in her opinion the Australian man already has an ego the size of a house. I know I’m certainly feeling more confident and relishing the compliments at the moment. So what is the difference between cosmetic skincare bought from pharmacies and cosmedical skincare purchased from dermatologists and Medispas? I made an appointment with my local Medispa as soon as I got off the plane to find out. Cosmetic skincare are non-active topical creams and potions that leave your skin feeling hydrated, but do little more than that. This type of skincare is not medically formatted and has no science behind the formulation. I was told that I would likely find a drawer in my girlfriend’s bathroom dedicated to half-full bottles and tubs of these types of creams because their claims to anti-ageing just didn’t work. Cosmedical-grade

Taking the brow to a new level
my Jean Linnehan of Amy Jean Eye Couture has long been known on the Gold Coast as the person to visit for the perfectly sculptured brow. Her years of experience and eye for detail have seen her establish a long list of loyal clientele both on the Coast and in Sydney, where she has just launched her second brow and lash boutique in the CBD. Always seeking the best for her clientele, Amy Jean has joined forces with Dr Christopher Leat, Director of Envisage Cosmetic Clinic. Amy Jean and Dr Leat have been referring clients to each other for years, but have only now united their services to offer brow perfection from Amy Jean’s opulent Palazzo Versace Salon. GCM chatted to Amy Jean and Dr Leat about their exciting partnership.
Tell us more about how you will be working together to give your clients the perfect brow. AJ: Using cosmetic injectables to shape the brow area requires skill and experience in order to achieve the ideal contour and laxity. Dr Leat has 15 years experience in the industry and he understands the impact a well-proportioned brow can have on your appearance. Some clients need more than just a brow shaping in order to achieve their ideal brow and that is where Dr Leat’s expertise comes in. Using Botox and cosmetic fillers, Dr Leat can help to correct brows to achieve the ideal shape, providing me the perfect platform to accentuate my client’s eye area and complement their facial structure. CL: There is no doubt a great brow sculpt can work wonders to open up the eye area and create balanced, symmetrical features. However, cosmetic injectables can help correct an odd or uneven brow structure. For example, Botox can be used to relax an overarched brow or alternately to create an arch to open up the eye area. Issues such as hooding of the eyelid or a heavy brow can also often be rectified. What are the benefits of combining brow sculpting with cosmetic injectables ? AJ: When a client has used Botox or cosmetic fillers in the brow area it provides the perfect space for me to create the ultimate brow for that person. The skin is smoother, tauter and responds better to the waxing and shaping process. The brow shape also lasts longer. This service is also ideal to use in conjunction with the feather-touch tattooing also available at my salon. It really is taking the concept of the perfect brow that one step further. CL: Amy Jean’s eye for the perfect brow is really adding the perfect finishing touch to complement my work. Having your brows professionally sculptured adds a polished, well-groomed look to your appearance. Can you tell us a little more about the procedure? CL: Clients will be given a consultation with both Amy Jean’s team and myself to discuss the potential of their brow area. This is a walkin, walk-out procedure with little to no downtime. The client will start to see the results of the injectables within four to five days and the effects will last for between three and six months. AJ: Our clients receive a complimentary eye styling before they leave the salon so no telltale signs of the procedure are evident. GCM 58 January / February 2012

In Summer window awnings allow you to reduce the need for air-conditioning or electrical cooling as they can reduce 80 per cent of the headload on your windows. In Winter, with the blinds retracted you can allow the sun to naturally heat your home. But why limit yourself to just windows? With the Government’s recent introduction of a carbon tax, we can expect to see our energy bills double in around six years, and triple within 10 as stated by the CEOs of Origin & TRUenergy. To this end, more and more people are turning to solar energy, which saves you money and allows you to give back to the environment. Blue Sky Solar’s Phillip Clark explains why we should all switch to solar. 72 January / February 2012
gcm promotion lue Sky Solar has been in business on the Gold Coast for over two years, owned and operated by Phil and Karen Clark and offering a local and competitive service on both commercial and residential solar installation. Phil says, “We have competitors calling us to ask how we can provide such competitive prices when using such premium products”. Phil explains that, “switching to solar means you don’t have to fore go the lifestyle to which you’ve become accustomed, instead, installing solar energy systems mean you can ultimately save money and even earn some back!”
So how does home solar power work? Solar systems convert sunlight directly into electricity via solar panels mounted on the roof. They work any time there is daylight (even on overcast days), helping to reduce electricity bills, greenhouse-gas emissions and assisting each household’s contribution to reducing climate change. Any excess solar electricity from your solar panel can be fed back into the grid, which effectively makes your electricity meter run backwards and thus saves you money. Queensland also has a ‘feed-in tariff’ system that pays the homeowner multiple credits for each unit of electricity fed into the grid from their solar system. Obviously this means that any excess energy you produce will be earning you money. Once you’ve paid the initial costs of equipment and installation, your energy is free for around 35 years. A return on investment with a Blue Sky Solar Energy System is usually achieved within three years, after that, your electricity is free for life! Solar energy also helps reduce your carbon footprint as a clean energy alternative by not contributing to global warming, acid rain or smog. Solar power, therefore, actively contributes to the decrease of harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Solar energy is currently only a small percentage of our total energy use, and by purchasing solar energy systems we’re helping Australia to achieve its 20 per cent green energy target by 2020, plus benefiting our own pockets by not having to pay for the electricity we use every day. Solar energy produces no waste and no pollution and therefore reduces our impact on climate change and global warming. Solar panels can be recycled at the end of their 35-40 year life and reused to produce new solar panels! Why should you choose Blue Sky Solar? • Blue Sky Solar Energy Systems that provide solar power for residential and commercial areas cause absolutely no pollution. They’re the perfect solution to be able to provide electricity to run your home in a way you're accustomed to without any harmful effects on the environment and it's free! • Quiet; high-quality solar panels and TL Inverters make absolutely no noise. No hum of electricity, no whistling or the noisy sound of generators, just total peace and quiet. • Industry Leading Technology; you should demand a system that allows you to analyse your energy production daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and more. If the inverter system doesn’t allow you to analyse data over any given period of time you should demand a superior product. This is one of the reasons Blue Sky chooses to use only high-quality commercial equipment. • Excess energy can be sold; by placing your solar panels in a prime location, it is quite possible to produce more energy than your family may need. This energy is then easily sold off to your utility company. Currently AGL pay .52c per KwH and Origin pay .50c per KwH. All other energy suppliers in South East Queensland pay .44c. Blue Sky Solar use premium inverter products sourced from Germany and are backed by the industry’s best warranties. They offer a friendly, personal service and are on hand at all times to answer any questions you may have. Phone 1300 552 997 for a free quote or to set up a time to meet with Phil. GCM Call Blue Sky Solar now and if you’re one of the first 20 callers to install a solar energy system you’ll receive a free Energy Management System valued at $800. This web-based package allows you to monitor your energy consumption from anywhere in the world. Blue Sky Solar will also teach you how to use this state-of-the-art product! Just mention this article.
Thank you for the exceptional service. It is very rare these days to have the quality of service your company provides. The panel installation team were fantastic and the electrical crew are second to none. I am extremely happy with the 1.5kw solar-energy system you have provided. – Charles Crassweller. 73 January / February 2012

Raw Fudge Balls
Four easy ingredients and no cooking required. 1 cup of dates 1 cup of walnuts ½ cup of desiccated coconut ¼ cup of raw cacao powder Form ingredients into small balls and sprinkle with additional cacao powder or desiccated coconut. Wrap in cellophane with ribbon to make them look extra special. All ingredients are high in iron, which helps to keep energy levels sustained. The recipe is a real winner for pregnant women.
Ingredients 1 cup red quinoa wholegrain, rinsed 6 Roma tomatoes, finely diced 100g baby spinach leaves, shredded ¼ Spanish onion, finely diced 1 large beetroot, peeled and grated Juice and zest of 1 lemon Dried cranberries, small handful 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds 1 tablespoon pepita pumpkin seeds Pinch of sumac Cook one cup of red quinoa the same way you would cook rice or according to packet instructions. To do this, simply put your quinoa in a pot and cover with 1¼ cups of water. As the quinoa grains cook you will notice they look like they grow little tails; this is completely normal! The quinoa gets to about triple its original size. When it is ready, the quinoa looks light and fluffy and there shouldn’t be any water left over. The cooking process takes about 15 minutes, with an additional five minutes needed to let the quinoa stand and fluff with a fork. To decrease the cooking time, soak the quinoa beforehand. Add the tomatoes, baby spinach, salad onion, grated beetroot, dried cranberries and sunflower seeds. Toss and add the agave dressing, see recipe below. Finish with a sprinkling of petitas and sumac. The best thing to do with this salad is use vegetables that you already have in your kitchen. Not only do you get your favourite vegetables, but you save some money and avoid wastage. Agave Dressing Juice of 1 small lemon 3 tablespoons tamari (wheat-free soy sauce) 1 tablespoon agave Splash of apple cider vinegar

Lola’s Magic Muсli
Oats, pepitas, pomegranate seeds, cranberries, goji berries and fresh blueberries topped with organic yoghurt, raw honey and stewed rhubarb. Stewed Rhubarb 150g rapadura/panela (or as desired) 2 tablespoons of water 1 tablespoon of lemon juice Rind of half a lemon Rind of half an orange Place the rhubarb, sugar, water, lemon juice, lemon rind and orange rind in a medium-sized saucepan and set to a low heat and cover. Simmer gently, stirring occasionally for 10-12 minutes or until rhubarb is tender. Remove from heat and set aside in a medium bowl, covered. Note; the leaves of rhubarb are poisonous and should not be consumed.
Pomegranaт Powр Mix
Dried pomegranate seeds, raw brazil nuts, raw almonds, cranberries, goji berries, pepitas, raw sesame seeds, shredded coconut. A great way to keep your energy levels sustained throughout the day is to make your very own trail mix. For this recipe it is important to go for the most pure and wholesome ingredients. Dried fruit naturally loses its colour in the drying process. Steer clear of dried fruits that have preservatives added in order to maintain bright colouration. The best part of creating your own trail mix is that you can explore different ingredients to suit your tastebuds.

Dining Out | Videre Restaurant first entrée is Choux Farci of Confit Duck Jacobs Well tiger prawns, cumin, Portobello ‘tagliatelle’ with white port and tarragon jus, which loosely translates to a tiny little parcel of perfection. The shredded duck begins as a sweet flavour and by the time it’s gone from my mouth I’m left with the very mild anise-y flavour of tarragon. Our second, Raviolo of Spanner Crab Salt cod brandade, spiced brown onion liniment and crab bisque bubbles, is the most spectacular dish I’ve seen and the taste of the salty sea cements the freshness factor. When it comes to mains we indulge in a Pan Roast Fish of the Day with tiger prawn garlic and caramel fennel risotto, tomato fondue, olive crumbs, Jerusalem artichoke veloute, all of which combines to create a sweet initial flavour followed by a just-jumped-out-of-theocean-on-to-your-plate taste. The smooth fish falls apart in my mouth and the risotto is the perfect accompaniment. We also order the Pure South, Tasmanian OP rib fillet on the bone, aged 18 months, with harissa, sweet potato and blue cheese terrine and buttered spinach. The organic, grain-fed steak is cooked to perfection, and considering the thickness, this is no easy feat. Sweet potato and blue cheese is a combination from the gods and the sweet but tart flavours enhance the steak enormously. Dessert, for me, is extra special. We share callebaut dark chocolate terrine with sea salt, banana conserve and Eton mess, chocolate soil and brittle with burnt caramel ice cream. No word of a lie. Along with this we indulge in a Tahitian vanilla cheesecake with ginger bread crumbs, hazelnut praline powder and paste and passion fruit and hazelnut oil parfait. It is clear that a lot of thought has gone into the menu at Videre and the perfect interweaving of flavours in every dish must be sampled to be believed.
idere Restaurant on the 21st floor at RACV Royal Pines Resort, boasts a spectacular view of the entire Coast and offers a European-inspired menu of innovative creations and mouth-watering flavours. The second we step inside we are amazed, and the evening continues to impress.
VISUAL FEAST The décor within Videre is simple and sleek. Buttery caramel and khaki tones set the scene for low-key elegance, while the spectacular view provides more aesthetic stimulation than you could imagine. The restaurant is split into two levels and the kitchen is open plan so we’re able to watch the chefs meticulously preparing our heavenly dishes. One of three Royal Pines golf courses lays below us, spilling into the trees, the unmistakable row of high-rises dot the horizon and the ocean stretches to the end of the world. It is, simply, magical. AURA OF THE SPACE Videre epitomises understated grace. The waiters circle the room soundlessly and it’s as if we’re alone, although when I look around almost every table is occupied. A soft European voice croons in the background and low lighting encapsulates the mood. There is a very distinct feeling of stylish comfort, but nothing has been overdone, which sets the focus clearly on the tastes we are about to experience. TASTE JOURNEY There are possibly not enough adjectives in the world to describe the tastes of our evening at Videre. I’ve never experienced anything quite like it and to say that it was a taste sensation cannot do it justice. Videre offers a choice of a degustation menu with either five or seven courses and an à la carte menu, which we opted for. Every meal begins with an amuse buche, a Belgian roasted, trussed tomato with asparagus and feta to ‘awaken the taste buds’. That it does and so we begin. Our 82 January / February 2012
THE FINER DROP With a five-page beverage list, it is safe to say that Videre caters for any dinner accompaniment you may desire. The wine list is the most impressive I’ve seen, with at least 10 varieties of each variation. Whites range from a Hawkes Bay Te Mata Woodthorpe Sauvignon Blanc to a Tamar Ridge Riesling, with most wines patriotically sourced from Australia and a select few sailed across the sea from our Kiwi neighbours. There are over 30 reds to choose from, again sourced primarily from Australia. Maître D Shannon offers to match our wines to the meals we’ve chosen, however, my dining partner is eating for two so we opt for a refreshing lemon, lime and bitters. Of course, there are both local and imported beers on offer along with spirits, dessert wines and aperitifs. THE CARE FACTOR While I didn’t have a care in the world, perched high above the world, the wait staff were constantly on hand to ensure this was so. Several staff attended to us throughout the night, each polite and knowledgeable to a tee. Our water glasses were never empty and our cutlery and plates were scooped up the instant we finished our meals. Shannon explained every aspect of the dishes we ordered and recommended sides according to our tastes. As our mains arrived, our waiter explained exactly where the cuts of meat had originated, right down to the ocean temperature the fish of the day preferred to reside in. Nothing was left unaccounted for and this dining experience was truly exquisite. I cannot praise Videre enough. Take someone you love for an out-of-this-world dining experience you’ll never forget. MonEy MAttErS Financial advice for the real world. et’s celebrate the beginning of the New Year with a well-deserved “cheers” to getting past 2011. For all those small business owners who have worked hard and maintained the faith, we toast you. It was a tough year with the Global Financial Crisis continuing to batter us around like a cyclone that sits out to sea continually reminding us it is still there!
As the world sits today, we will be impacted by those issues that go beyond our shores. We have read about Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain’s financial woes more than ever before. And seen political leadership change hands in countries where we have not seen such change in decades. Is this a good or bad thing? We will have to wait and see. Only through an action plan to uphold austerity measures will investors again develop confidence in the financial markets of Greece and Italy, and as we know, from increased confidence comes a more revitalised economy. Australian investors are very sensitive to volatility. When is the right time to buy and when is the right time to sell? I believe that when we invest we need to look at a stock as we would if we were buying a business – because essentially as a shareholder that is what you are investing in. You need to ask yourself, does the stock have a good cash flow and balance sheet? Does the stock work for its place in my portfolio (provides good distributions) and is the stock costing me more than I am getting from it? Essentially, income from a portfolio is the key driver to deciding whether to maintain stock. If the income you receive is covering any debt you have on your investment then the stock is working for you. Likewise, if the income is covering your income stream in retirement then it too is worth holding on to. Many Australian stocks also provide franked income or imputation credits. The dividend imputation system allows investors who have been paid a dividend to take a personal tax credit (franking credit) since the company has already paid tax (30 per cent) on this dividend. If you are in income-stream phase, over 60 years old and do not pay tax on your income, franking credits will be paid back to you. What are some key takeouts from 2011 that we need to be aware of in 2012? If you are in income-stream phase (drawing an income stream from your superannuation) you should be aware that you do not need to draw the full amount in 2012. Minimum pension percentage factors: Age at July 1, 2011

86 January / February 2012
In order to help holders of account-based, allocated and marketlinked (term allocated) pensions recoup capital losses incurred as a result of the Global Financial Crisis, the minimum pension drawdown amount has been reduced by 50 per cent for the past three financial years (that is, since 1 July 2008). From July 1, 2011, a reduction of 25 per cent will apply to the normal minimum payment amounts, allowing clients to elect to receive less income from their pensions for the coming financial year. The minimum pension payment amounts will return to normal levels from July 1, 2012. A client aged 65 or younger would normally have to receive income of at least 4 per cent of their account balance. For the 2011/12 financial year, they only have to receive 3 per cent. Financial Claims Scheme reduced to $250,000 Effective February 1, 2012, the new cap is reduced from the previous cap set at, 1,000,000 (originally planned to expire October 12, 2011). I have no doubt that we will be challenged this year. It is important to seek good, professional advice to assist you in the process of both building and maintaining your business and personal goals. Let’s head into 2012 with the promise of a new beginning and the excitement of the Gold Coast being the destination for the Commonwealth Games in 2018. As always, discuss your personal circumstances with a financial adviser. Gcm

For the select few that are lucky enough to have an Aston parked in their garage, the experience of driving possibly the world’s most luxurious sports car is a treat that never gets tiresome. With this in mind the team at Sunshine Aston Martin invited 20 of their clients to a very special Drive Day to celebrate the brand and revive the joys of driving their vehicles out on the open road. Les Goble and Simon Dickinson, both Aston Martin drivers from England, were special guests on the day, which involved a convoy of 26 Aston Martins following a picturesque mapped route around the Gold Coast. The group was split into two lots of 13 vehicles and each group stopped periodically at 10 scheduled spots to swap drivers and enjoy the view. The groups then reunited at the picturesque O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard before venturing back to the dealership for canapés and a glass of champagne to culminate an exciting day out on the road. Combining the power of a sports car and the comfort of a luxury saloon, the 2012 Jaguar XF 2.2 is no longer a favourite reserved just for the high-flying business executives. With a revised entry-level price tag, the promise of reliability and an eco-friendly label, this prime example of exceptional automotive design is now accessible to a new market that eternally appreciates the XF’s styling flair and innovation. The visuals First introduced to the market in 2008, the Jaguar XF replaced the outgoing S-Type. In its maiden year, the vehicle was awarded a string of awards almost as long as its streamlined bonnet. The critics were clearly impressed and looking at the XF it is not hard to see why. The compact, almost cat-like arching body with its snout pointing down no doubt transformed the middle-range model into a sportier, sexier version of its protégé. From the front, a larger grille with the signature badge centre stage as the key statement piece, accompanied by bold bifunction Xenon headlamps with crystal white LED daytime running lamps that wrap around the front to the wheel arches. From the rear the refined design experience continues with a sloping rear window leading to a defined boot lid with an elegant chrome detail housing a boot space big enough for luggage and golf clubs in the same trip. Once inside you can expect the unforgettable smell of Connolly leather to hit the back of your nose while your eyes dart between the shine of the dials and buttons, the thickness of the deep-pile carpeting in the foot well and the deep gloss of the black centre console. You are surrounded by opulence and handcrafted finishes and the lavishness of space. A seven-inch touch screen sits in the centre of the dash and provides the perfect interface to operate your iPod and USB in conjunction with satellite navigation and DVD mapping. It is from this screen you can view the reverse-parking camera, also a new addition. The Drive The potential of the XF is apparent as soon as you climb into the driver’s seat. Cocooned and comfortable, it is the red start button that first catches your eye. With the gentlest of touches the start button roars the 2.2 litre four-cylinder diesel engine to life and it 94 January / February 2012
settles to a rhythmic rumble. The Jaguar DriveSelector eight speed automatic transmission then rises from the centre console to meet your hand. Once on the road it is almost impossible to find a fault. The whole body integrity of the XF feels solid and strong, adding to the overwhelming feeling of safety you have once behind the wheel. All models benefit from the Dynamic Stability Control system, which offers four modes: normal, winter, TracDSC and DSC off, which allows the enthusiastic driver among us to choose the level of intervention dependant on road and weather conditions. When stopped at lights you will notice the XF is also fitted with Echo Drive, which temporarily shuts down the engine once it comes to a standstill. This feature is a world first for an automatic executive saloon diesel engine, and not only allows the engine to operate at a greater range of temperatures, but also makes it the most fuelefficient engine ever for Jaguar. The Echo Drive, however, is not the only environmentally friendly feature of the XF, as Jaguar as a whole are the only automotive company to offset 100 per cent of manufacturing assembly CO2 emissions to form part of the Jaguar Land Rover CO2 offset program. The Safety You can rest easy behind the wheel of an XF as the model has all the safety features the Jaguar badge is renowned for. Adaptive cruise control monitors the vehicles around you while the advanced breaking system helps assure smooth stopping under a wide range of conditions. In addition the bi-function HID Xenon headlamps provide a powerful pure light and are also available fitted with Adaptive Front Lighting, which reacts to the car’s speed and driver input to deflect headlamp beams deep into corners during turns for extra confidence. The details Key features you will love. The Jaguar XF possesses a specific grace and style all of its own, so if you enjoy the finer things in life this is the vehicle for you. However, with the more accessible price tag of $84,990 you need not live on Hedges Avenue to have one parked in the driveway. Think about the money you will save owning the most fuel-efficient Jaguar ever produced and the safety features you will enjoy for you and the family. Not that you need convincing once behind the wheel, as the Jaguar XF then speaks for itself. Investment. $84,990 drive away. Where to get one. our Gold Coast back yard is one of sparkling seas spilling into the rolling hills beyond. often overlooked for its beauty, the Coast has much more to offer than first meets the eye, and who better to see it with than Gold Coast helitours. offering everything from corporate charters to scenic flights, a helicopter is the perfect way to get an eyeful of the Gold Coast.
old Coast Helitours was founded over 15 years ago by Scott Menzies, Chief Pilot, with an impressive aviation background spanning over two decades. He’s logged over 10,000 hours command time in a wide range of helicopters and has an impressive skill base that incorporates charter, sling work, powerline stringing, water bucketing, movie filming and search and rescue. It is on this experience that Gold Coast Helitours was built. In addition to his experienced professional pilots, Scott employs a dedicated ground crew, all of whom hold commercial helicopter licences.
Aviation is in Gold Coast Helitours owner Scott’s blood. His dad John was one of Australia’s original ‘birdmen’ and was into flying of a different kind, travelling to various regional shows and being towed behind cars and boats. Scott explains that he knew he was destined to fly, with his passion for aviation awakened at an early age. He says, “I had two military instructors who taught me the ropes while I was getting my commercial licence. They inspired me to go beyond just piloting and I worked my way up over a number of years until I was in a position to establish Gold Coast Helitours.” Operating out of Marina Mirage, the company offers local joy flights, charters, aerial photography and filming, heavy lifting, search and rescue and even skydiving. “I love what I do. You could be doing a joy flight one minute and then you’re off doing a media job with a 60 Minutes film crew.” Scott is a Gold Coast local living in the heart of the action at Surfers Paradise, and with his aerial perspective on things, he likely knows the geography of the area better than most. “The Gold Coast has everything from the beaches to the hinterland and it’s that variety that makes for great flying,” Scott says. “You don’t need to be a pilot though, the place is so accessible whether by road, air or boat.” If you’re simply after a relaxing afternoon in the sky, Gold Coast Helitours is the carrier of choice to experience the amazing landscapes the Coast has to offer with a unique range of tours. Their luxurious helicopters will sweep you across the picturesque waterways, rolling hills and, of course, the golden beaches and towering high-rises the Gold Coast is famous for. “Obviously, I’m fortunate to be able to fly to beautiful and exotic locations all the time. In a day I can be on Moreton Island, down to Tweed Heads, inland to Mt Tamborine, have a hit of golf in the afternoon and then be back to the helipad at the Marina Mirage in time for dinner.” Scott explains that when he isn’t flying he’s quite the extreme sport enthusiast, “I love to go jetskiing on The Broadwater, motorbike riding in the hills or skydiving. I love skydiving so much, I set up a tandem skydiving division with my business,” he says. 96 January / February 2012
Another thing Scott enjoys in his limited downtime is to jump in his boat (with its own helipad for a quick getaway) and head up to Wave Break Island in the middle of The Broadwater just north of Sea World. “Not many people know about this side of the Gold Coast. You can swim, fish and relax with white sand and beautiful blue water all around. That’s the thing about the coast, it’s got glitz, glamour and high energy, but in half-an-hour it can feel like there’s no-one else around.” With a scenic Gold Coast setting and central Broadwater location, Gold Coast Helitours are ideally positioned to offer a range of helitours for any kind of adventurer. Each tour offers awe-inspiring views of the Gold Coast high-rises and the breathtaking landscapes of the hinterland, before skimming back above the surf to the Marina Mirage Heliport. CR SUSIE DOUGLAS
Division 7, Chair of Economic Development & Tourism Committee It’s hard to believe another year has passed and I take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy New Year. 2012 promises to be another busy year, with the continuing revitalisation of Surfers Paradise following a number of major milestones for the precinct in 2011. The official opening of the redeveloped Surfers Paradise foreshore late last year marked the completion of this major Council initiative, and saw a wonderfully rejuvenated foreshore area delivered under budget and ahead of schedule. Around the same time, the Surfers Paradise Vision was formally launched. Two new private developments, Soul and the Hilton Hotel, were also completed. These fantastic additions to the Surfers skyline will make a significant long-term contribution to the visitor experience for the more than 18 million that come into the precinct each year. There has always been one constant in Surfers Paradise and that is change. This year, we can look forward to further changes, with the forthcoming upgrade to Cavill Mall. As part of Council’s commitment to opening up our city’s internationally renowned foreshore areas to all residents and visitors, works to close another gap in the Oceanway will also commence in 2012. Council is working together with local residents on the Surfers South Oceanway project, which will see a 3.5 metre-wide shared pathway between Clifford Street and Fern Street with works expected to get under way in April. Finally, the light rail works are due to commence in Surfers Paradise this year. The light rail will transform both public transport on the Gold Coast and the look and feel of Surfers Paradise. However, as with all major public works projects, temporary inconvenience is to be expected during the construction phase.
Martin Winter Gold Coast Tourism CEO
Since the announcement that the Gold Coast will host the 2018 Commonwealth Games, anticipation and expectation of what Australia’s sixth-largest city and most popular holiday destination will deliver has soared. Already famous for hosting some of the nation’s largest and most successful major events, the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will be the biggest event in Australia over the next decade, but there is plenty to look forward to between now and then. Before we move on too quickly, it is worth just taking stock of what this announcement means for the city and its $4.5 billion tourism industry. 110 January / February 2012
First we will benefit from an unparalleled period of new investment and development to further the Gold Coast’s credentials as a truly modern international City. It has already been started with the Queensland Government announcing $500 million direct investment in venue and transport infrastructure. Of course, the Gold Coast’s international profile will hit new levels as the city builds its promotional momentum towards 2018. During the Gold Coast Games we expect more than 150,000 extra tourists will visit the city, with a 50/50 split between international and domestic visitors, injecting at least an extra $250 million in tourism spend into the local economy. And it is estimated the Gold Coast Games will ultimately generate up to $2 billion in economic benefit, with up to 30,000 fulltime-equivalent jobs created between 2015 and 2020. So let’s appreciate what we have achieved and be excited about the opportunity to accomplish something truly remarkable by 2018.
Karen Andrews M.P. Federal Member for McPherson
The New Year brings many challenges for the Gold Coast, but also many opportunities as we look on to 2012 and the years ahead. In recent times, unemployment has been a consistent issue on the Gold Coast as global economic instability has hit the local jobs market hard, particularly in the areas of tourism and construction. However, while there has been this local downturn, Australia as a nation has been experiencing growth in the mining and resources sector. I believe the Gold Coast should be taking advantage of this boom. The mining and resources sector will need thousands of workers to fill its workforce shortages in the next decade and the Gold Coast is well positioned to provide this workforce. One of the ways that we can do this is by establishing the Gold Coast as a national hub for fly-in flyout (FIFO) workers. The benefits of this are two-fold: first, employment opportunities for the Gold Coast’s unemployed; and second, the opportunity to bring FIFO workers and their families to the city to boost our local economy through greater consumer spending. Not only does the Gold Coast have a ready and willing workforce, our city is also well placed to provide the social support networks for FIFO workers and particularly their families. It is therefore logical and sensible for the Gold Coast to be established as the national FIFO hub for those wishing to work in the mining and resources sector. I will continue to support efforts to develop a FIFO workforce hub on the Gold Coast and ensure our city continues to prosper throughout 2012 and beyond.
