APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS Apprenticeships and traineeships combine paid work with structured training to gain a qualification. At TAFE Queensland, we work with your employer to ensure you successfully gain competence in a trade (apprenticeship) or a vocational area (traineeship). Upon completion, you may find yourself in a great place to keep working, go on to future study or even start your own business!

CHOOSE THE RIGHT APPRENTICESHIP/TRAINEESHIP

• Think about what you enjoy doing and what your interests are • Speak to your family, friends or your school career counsellor or guidance officer • Get the facts at apprenticeshipsinfo.qld.gov.au

FIND AN EMPLOYER

• You can be employed directly by a business. The business will pay your wages and train you with the support of a training organisation. To find an employer: - contact businesses either in person or through a letter - apply for jobs advertised in the newspaper - search for jobs on websites such as: jobactive.gov.au, seek.com.au and careerone.com.au - using your personal networks – talk to family and friends to see if they know anyone who could employ you as an apprentice or trainee - contact a Jobactive provider, these organisations can provide you with a list of job vacancies in your area. CHOOSE YOUR TRAINING PARTNERS

• Work with an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network: - They will work with you and your employer at this stage to help you complete the training contract • Choose a training organisation: - You and your employer will choose a training organisation (TAFE Queensland) who will work with you throughout the apprenticeship or traineeship. Contact the Australian Apprenticeship Support Network on 13 38 73 or Apprenticeships Info on 1800 210 210 for more information.

GET STARTED

• Complete your paperwork: - Speak to your employer and your training organisation to complete your paperwork and develop your training plan • Use the probationary period: - Probation is a period when the apprentice or trainee works and trains with an employer before each decides whether to continue

• You can be employed by a group training organisation who will place you with different businesses to gain on-the-job experience, pay your wage and organise your training. To find a group training organisation call 1800 819 747

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) Through RPL, your existing skills and knowledge will be assessed against current industry standards, allowing you to gain credits toward a qualification. For more information on RPL contact us on (07) 5581 8797.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES We offer a range of support services for apprentices and trainees with a strong focus on learning and educational assistance to enable successful completion of your studies.

LEARNING SUPPORT

LIBRARY

Provided by specialised teachers, get support in exam preparation, assignment writing, time management, making presentations, study skills, language, literacy and numeracy support and general study skills.

You will have access to a range of online and hard copy resources at our libraries located at our Ashmore, Coomera and Southport campuses.

DISABILITY SUPPORT Disability support is available which may include individualised planning and advice to help you succeed in your studies. This support may include identifying specialised equipment, access to assistance and teacher liaison.

ONLINE SUPPORT Access to TAFE Queensland learning support and resources including Studiosity. Through Studiosity, you can chat online to expert tutors who can help you with your studies. Studiosity is available for students studying qualifications certificate III and above.

INDIGENOUS STUDENT SUPPORT An Indigenous Student Support Officer is available to assist you and support you during your studies.

INTERNET/WIFI You will have access to TAFE Queensland’s WiFi and student computers with internet access across all of our campuses.

FACILITIES All campuses are either located within walking distance to food and beverage outlets or have an on-site cafeteria. Our campuses are close to public transport or parking is available for no or minimal charge.

STUDENT COUNSELLING Free and confidential counselling is available to assist and support you with career guidance and personal, study or work-related issues.


OUR FACILITIES Step into our purpose-built facilities where you will use the same tools and equipment used in industry. Put your theory into practice straight away in our salons, training restaurant and trades workshops. Develop your skills, ability, and confidence and gain the practical experience you need to graduate job ready.

SIMULATED CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOPS Students studying construction trades including shopfitting and wet trades will complete their training in our fullysimulated construction worksite. The site contains heavy duty scaffolding, aluminium tower scaffolding, and two elevated work platforms for completing working safely at heights training. You’ll learn hands-on with access to an extensive range of battery-powered hand tools including a vertical wall saw.

HAIRDRESSING AND BEAUTY SALON Our fully operational hairdressing and beauty salon, Style Academy, offers a range of quality services at great value prices. The salon is staffed by our hairdressing and beauty students who are supervised by fully-qualified teachers at all times. We use the same products, equipment, and facilities found in a real salon and work with real, paying clients. You will have the valuable opportunity to put theory into practice and gain practical skills in a real-world environment.

SOUTHPORT ASHMORE TRADE TRAINING CENTRE

HOSPITALITY HUB The Hospitality Hub is a contemporary styled training restaurant which is open to the public. The menu changes daily with food prepared by cookery students and table service provided by hospitality students training in front-of-house operations. Our training restaurant allows our hospitality students to gain hands-on experience in a real-world environment. You will learn the workings of a real restaurant in state-of-the-art facilities under the guidance of industryexperienced teachers.
