By Janet Kidd, CAP-OM

2012-2013 Past President

Words cannot express what a whirlwind this past year has been. If you don’t know by now, Galveston County has some really awesome members. My original goal this year was the 3 R’s: rest, recoup, and recover. As a result of the devastation this chapter has endured over the past, I felt th we needed a break before our 60 Anniversary. Well, this chapter has proved me wrong. We hit the gate running and have not stopped since. As I started off my presidency, my knees were shaking and I was wondering what I had gotten myself into. But as time progressed I began to feel really comfortable. Let me share a few accomplishments. Quarter 1 highlights  Planning Meeting at League City  TL Division Workshop with entire board attending (60)  Purchased new study materials for CAP exam st  9/6 Bring a Friend recruitment/What’s in it for Me – 1 of 2 programs scheduled  Adopted the “Queen Bee” recognition program from the T-L Theme: “Be the One”  Lynne Purdue, CAP-OM began working on the criteria for Student Scholarship  Janine Cmaidalka, CAP-OM and Deborah Sanders, CAP-OM volunteered to CoChair the Seminar Committee( February) Quarter 2 highlights  Board meeting on conference call 10/24/12- successful  Dec 1- H.O.M.E (Helping Our Military Endure) community service  Christmas Party-December 4 @ Red River BBQ Silent Auction Donation for Boys and Girls Club in Galveston Toiletries for Dickinson ISD  Purchased a laptop  Seminar-February 11, 2013 in Galveston  Strategic Planning Meeting, Thursday February 7, 2013  HQ changing website banner-Nov 15  Avery Awards submission  Two members sat for CAP exam Quarter 3 highlights  1/3 Bring a Friend recruitment – 2nd of 2programs  Strategic Planning Meeting, Thursday February 7, 2013  New Member Orientation-What’s in it for me  New Member installation- Allison Davidson, Beverly Evans, Irene Galicia, Geraldine Jones, Tamera Yoakum  Members stepping up to “Be the One” and filled a full slate of chapter officers for 2013-2014 fiscal year  Seminar-February 11, 2013 in Galveston – 70 attendees  March program by Bonnie House, president-elect T/L  New Member Orientation- What’s in it for Me  New Member installation-Sheena Pearson

Dolphin Tales June 2013 Quarter 4 highlights  New Member Installation-Lina Ellis  April- 2013APOY-Deborah Sanders  Deborah also won the SW District Recognition award for 3rd quarter.  APW-gift of charm bracelets to all attending members from board.  May-T/L Division Meeting in Austin-Janet Kidd Delegate

We have completed all 8 requirement to obtain our Chapter of Excellence for the fifth (that’s 5) consecutive years. And it gets better. We have the highest percentage of members who have completed the Member of Excellence. At this writing, they are:          

Janine Cmaidalka Alison Davidson Rhonda Driver Cathy French Geraldine Jones Janet Kidd Deborah Sanders Brenda Slawson Pam Stout Tamera Yoakum

We won the Avery Great Results for the second year in a row. This year, we received the “Honorable Mention” with a $500 monetary award. As you remember, last year we won “Chapter of Distinction” and received $1,500. Under membership and retention, we started out with Started out with 27 members. Although we lost 7, we gained 7. We have 14 members with certifications: 13 with CAP-OM and 1 CAP. I’ve been awestruck at what this chapter and members have accomplished this year and I am honored to have been your president this past year. I am especially humbled to have been awarded the President’s award as a result of all the hard work of the chapter members. I cannot express my gratitude to be honored in this way. Let me close with these thoughts. I happen to be reading the Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd (no relation) during my time as president and came across a quote that I think is fitting for my closing remark. If you are considering how you can step up and “Be the One” just contact any one of the board members and we will find a place where you can showcase your skills. You won’t be disappointed in your commitment. Don’t underestimate the value of your abilities and your contributions to the chapter. You can carry a heavier load than you think. We are all “Queen Bees” in the making. A worker bee is just over a centimeter long and weighs only about sixty milligrams: never less, she can fly with a load heavier than herself.--The Honey Bee by James L. Gould and Carol Grant Gould (Taken from The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd).
