GCBAA AT THE 2026 GCSAA CONFERENCE & TRADE SHOW:

A Week of Connection, Celebration, and Momentum

T

he Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA) joined thousands of golf industry professionals in Orlando, Florida, for the 2026 GCSAA Conference & Trade Show, a week filled with education, networking, celebration, and collaboration.

As a presenting partner of the Conference and Trade Show, GCBAA members were highly engaged throughout the event, participating in meetings, networking functions, educational opportunities, and industry discussions that continue to shape the future of golf course construction.

With more than 12,800 attendees, 523 exhibitors, and record participation in educational programming, the 2026 event showcased the strength and momentum of the golf industry while celebrating the launch of GCSAA's Centennial year.

Board Engagement and Leadership Recognition One of the week's highlights was the annual GCBAA Board Dinner at the legendary Bay Hill Club & Lodge. Board members gathered to recognize outgoing directors, welcome new leadership, and celebrate the volunteers who dedicate countless hours to advancing the association.

Rentals joined the evening's discussions, which focused on leadership, industry trends, and opportunities for continued growth within the association.

Later in the week, the GCBAA Board of Directors convened for its Winter Meeting to discuss strategic priorities, workforce development initiatives, membership growth, safety programming, and plans for upcoming events and educational opportunities.

The GCBAA Booth: A Hub of Activity Throughout the Trade Show, the GCBAA Booth served as a central gathering place for members, prospective members, industry partners, and golf facility representatives.

The booth welcomed a steady stream of visitors seeking information about membership, certification, workforce development programs, educational offerings, and industry initiatives. Staff, board members, and volunteers spent the week answering questions, making introductions, and sharing updates about the many programs and services available through GCBAA. General Membership Meeting GCBAA members gathered during the General Membership Meeting to receive updates on association activities, committee initiatives, industry partnerships, and upcoming programs. Discussions highlighted the continued growth of the Construction Job Board, expansion of the Career Development Program, enhancements to the GCBAA Safety Program, and efforts to strengthen member engagement across the association.

Members also received updates on Foundation initiatives, workforce development efforts, and plans for upcoming regional and national events, while sharing feedback that will help guide the association's priorities moving forward.

Celebrating a Century of Progress A special highlight of the week was participation in GCSAA's Centennial Celebration, recognizing 100 years of service to the golf industry.

The Opening Reception and Centennial Celebration brought together industry leaders, longtime partners, and friends from across the golf community to reflect on the profession's history while looking toward the future. The event provided an opportunity to celebrate the partnerships and people who have helped grow the game and improve golf facilities around the world.

The morning's Opening Session energized attendees with a forward-looking message focused on innovation, sustainability, leadership, and the evolving needs of golf facilities and golfers.

GCBAA encouraged members to save the date for the 2027 Winter Meeting and GCSAA Conference & Trade Show in New Orleans, Louisiana. With the event scheduled earlier than many previous conferences, members are encouraged to begin planning now to ensure they can participate in another outstanding week of industry education, networking, and association business.

These conversations reinforced the strong relationship between builders and architects and focused on opportunities to enhance collaboration, address industry challenges, support workforce development, and continue improving the golf experience through thoughtful design and quality construction.

Strong partnerships remain one of the defining strengths of the golf construction industry, and the Winter Meeting provided numerous opportunities to strengthen those relationships.

A Healthy Tradition Continues The annual Health in Action 5K Run/2K Walk once again attracted an enthusiastic group of participants from across the industry.

t was wonderful to see so many of you at the GCBAA Summer Meeting in Boston this past August. What an incredible event—set in the heart of Boston’s historic Back Bay at the Westin Copley Place, with lively networking and a memorable golf outing and auction dinner. Thank you to everyone who made the trip and helped create such an energizing atmosphere.

One theme you couldn’t miss during our time together was safety. As President, strengthening safety across our industry is one of my top initiatives. You can expect to see more workshops, resources, and shared best practices in the months ahead as we work to grow and embed a culture of safety in everything we do.

Our education sessions in Boston set the tone. A few of the topics included: • 2024 Top 10 OSHA Violations – a reminder of the most common pitfalls that can—and should—be prevented. Presented

by Douglas Friloux, Horizon Distributors/ PoolCorp.

• Ways Technology and Insurance Collaborate to Dramatically Reduce Risk – showing how smart tools and smart planning go hand in hand. Presented by Russell Young, Tenna LLC. • “You Are Paying for Resources You Don’t Utilize” and “Common Sense, Cost and Courtroom: Why Safety Can’t Wait,” both delivered by Carl Heinlein of ACIG. • AI for Construction: Better, Safer, and More Productive Worksites presented

by Tenna, demonstrating how emerging technology can directly improve safety outcomes. Presented by Russell Young, Tenna LLC. Each session gave us practical, real-world strategies, but one message in particular resonated with me—and I hope with you as well.

During his Tuesday talk, Carl Heinlein asked a simple question: “What do you do with the information you gain from attending a conference or seminar?

Do you schedule a meeting with your team when you return to share what you learned?”

It’s easy to attend a great session, jot down a few notes, and then dive back into daily work once you’re home. I know I’m guilty of that.

Carl’s challenge was clear: don’t keep it to yourself. Set up that follow-up call, bring your team together, and pass along the key insights.

When we share what we’ve learned, we elevate our entire industry.

Another powerful reminder came in a more personal form. Inside every registration bag was a small picture frame with the words “Why do I work safe?” The idea was simple—place a photo of your family, a loved one, or anything that represents your reason for returning home at the end of each day. It’s a visual cue that our “why” is bigger than a jobsite or a deadline.

I encourage you to carry that thought forward. Whether you’re attending GCBAA meetings, regional conferences, or other industry events, ask yourself: How will I bring these lessons back to my team? How will I live the “why” of working safely every single day?

Knowledge only gains value when it’s shared. Safety practices, near-miss stories, even small process improvements—these things are contagious in the best possible way. When one company raises its standards, others notice and follow. That ripple effect makes all of us stronger.

As we look toward the rest of the year, I’m excited about the opportunities ahead to continue this conversation and to create new avenues for collaboration. Together, we can build an industry where safety isn’t just a policy or a checklist—it’s a culture, and it’s personal.

Thank you again to everyone who joined us in Boston and to those supporting GCBAA from afar. Let’s keep the momentum going. Share what you learn. Ask questions. Schedule that meeting. And, above all, keep your “why” front and center.

BUILDING MOMENTUM FOR OUR INDUSTRY AND OUR ASSOCIATION

A

s we move into the heart of the 2026 construction season, I wanted to take a moment to share an update on the many projects, initiatives, and discussions currently underway at the Golf Course Builders Association of America.

One of the most rewarding aspects of serving as your Executive Director is seeing firsthand the incredible work our members are accomplishing throughout North America and around the world.

Every week we receive updates on new construction projects, renovation work, sustainability initiatives, innovative equipment solutions, workforce development efforts, and partnerships that continue to strengthen the golf course construction industry.

While much of our work happens behind the scenes, I believe it is important that our members understand how active the Association has become and where we are focusing our efforts.

Supporting Member Business Growth One of our primary goals remains helping members connect with opportunities and each other.

The Construction Job Board continues to gain momentum and has become an increasingly valuable resource for members seeking project opportunities, subcontractors, suppliers, and qualified industry partners. What began as a simple concept has evolved into a regularly utilized member benefit that continues to generate meaningful business connections.

Our Career Development Program also continues to expand as we work to connect individuals interested in entering the golf construction industry with GCBAA member companies. Workforce development remains one of the most significant challenges facing our industry, and we are committed to creating pathways that introduce new talent to our members and their businesses.

In recent months, we have been refining processes, enhancing applicant tracking, and dedicating additional staff resources to ensure we can better connect interested candidates with available opportunities throughout our membership.

Strengthening Industry Partnerships The GCBAA continues to play an active leadership role throughout the golf industry.

Whether participating in National Golf Day, collaborating with the USGA, GCSAA, ASGCA, PGA of America, PGA TOUR, LPGA, NGCOA, CMAA, First Tee, and numerous allied organizations, our objective remains clear: ensure the golf course construction industry has a voice at the table.

These relationships create opportunities for our members, increase awareness of the value our industry provides, and position GCBAA as a respected and trusted resource across the game of golf.

We are also actively involved in planning future Golf Industry Shows and Conferences, ensuring the needs and interests of builders, contractors, suppliers, and construction professionals remain represented.

Expanding Education and Safety Resources Safety continues to be a major focus for the Association.

Through our Safety Program, regional workshops, educational materials, and member resources, we are working to provide practical tools that help companies improve jobsite safety, reduce risk, and protect their employees.

In addition, we continue to explore new educational opportunities that address evolving construction technologies, workforce challenges, environmental stewardship, project management, and business operations.

Our goal is to provide resources that create value for companies of every size and specialty within our membership.

Growing the Foundation and Industry Outreach The GCBAA Foundation remains committed to supporting initiatives that positively impact the future of golf.

OUR OBJECTIVE REMAINS CLEAR: ENSURE THE GOLF COURSE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY HAS A VOICE AT THE TABLE. From youth development programs and scholarship discussions to collaborative opportunities with organizations such as First Tee, we continue exploring ways to invest in the next generation of golfers and industry professionals.

The Foundation Board has also been evaluating new fundraising opportunities and partnership initiatives that can help expand our long-term impact while supporting meaningful projects across the golf community.

Operational Improvements Behind the Scenes The Association office has also been working diligently on several operational improvements.

Recent efforts have included technology upgrades, implementation of new payment processing solutions, improvements to member communications, event registration enhancements, sponsorship management, and streamlining internal administrative processes.

We are fortunate to have additional support resources assisting the office, allowing us to focus more attention on member engagement, workforce initiatives, event planning, and strategic growth opportunities.

Looking Ahead: More Member Stories, More Often Perhaps the most exciting opportunity moving forward is telling the story of our members more frequently.

One challenge we face is that there is simply too much good work happening throughout the industry to fit into a few periodic communications each year.

Every week, members are completing remarkable projects, solving complex challenges, supporting their communities, investing in employees, and advancing the profession.

Our goal is to increase the frequency of memberfocused communications and newsletters so we can better showcase these accomplishments.

To accomplish this, we will be asking members to share project updates, company news, employee milestones, safety successes, community involvement efforts, equipment innovations, and other noteworthy developments. The more content we receive from our members, the more effectively we can promote the outstanding work being performed across our industry.

Our vision is simple: create a more active and engaging communication platform that keeps members informed, connected, and proud of the collective accomplishments of the GCBAA community.

ver the past year, the GCBAA Foundation has undergone significant changes designed to strengthen its mission, increase industry impact, and position the Foundation for long-term success.

The Foundation Board of Directors has expanded its focus beyond traditional fundraising activities and is actively evaluating new opportunities to support workforce development, youth golf initiatives, educational programs, and projects that positively impact the future of the golf industry.

Recent changes have included the addition of new board members who bring diverse experiences from across the golf construction industry, enhanced collaboration with the GCBAA Board of Directors, and the development of a more strategic planning process to identify initiatives where the Foundation can make a meaningful difference.

Among the key priorities currently being explored are workforce development programs, scholarship opportunities, partnerships with organizations such as First Tee, and projects that help introduce young people to careers within

golf course construction and related professions.

The Foundation is also evaluating new fundraising strategies and donor engagement opportunities to ensure resources are available to support these initiatives for years to come.

The Board has also reaffirmed its commitment to honoring the Foundation's long-standing legacy of supporting youth golf and community-based programs while identifying new ways to address the evolving needs of the golf industry.

As the Foundation continues to evolve, members can expect increased communication regarding Foundation projects, fundraising efforts, grant opportunities, and the positive impact being created through the generosity and support of the GCBAA membership.

GCBAA FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES New Board Leadership and Strategic Direction FOR 2026 AND BEYOND

L

INCOLN, NEB. – The GCBAA Foundation (Golf Course Builders Association of America Foundation) has announced the appointment of a newly structured Board of Directors, along with a renewed strategic focus designed to strengthen workforce development, education, and industry outreach initiatives.

During a special meeting held on March 30, 2026, the Foundation formally established a seven-member Board of Directors, reinforcing its commitment to a more engaged, forwardthinking leadership structure aligned with the evolving needs of the golf industry.

Scholarship Program Development of a new scholarship initiative aimed at supporting individuals pursuing education and careers within the golf industry.

“This new board structure represents an important step forward in positioning the Foundation to make a greater impact on the future of our industry,” said Justin Apel, Facilitator of the meeting and Executive Director of GCBAA. “We are aligning leadership, resources, and vision to better support workforce development and create meaningful opportunities across the golf course construction profession.”

Strategic Priorities The Foundation will focus its efforts on three primary initiatives: Career Development Program Expansion of the Foundation’s internship and career portal to connect students and emerging professionals with opportunities

Education and Outreach Increased engagement with high schools, technical education programs, and community initiatives to raise awareness of career pathways in golf course construction.

Looking Ahead The newly appointed Board will begin immediate work on advancing these initiatives, with additional planning sessions scheduled in advance of the GCBAA Summer Meeting in Traverse City, Michigan. Ongoing virtual meetings will support progress and collaboration between committees.

“This is about building the future workforce of our industry,” Apel added. “By investing in people, education, and opportunity, the Foundation is creating a stronger, more sustainable path forward for golf course construction.”

7TH ANNUAL RICH MULLEN MEMORIAL GOLF OUTING A DAY OF GOLF, LAUGHTER, AND REMEMBERING RICH

T

he 7th Annual Rich Mullen Memorial Golf Outing brought together friends, colleagues, and golf enthusiasts for another unforgettable day on the course in honor of Rich’s legacy.

With camaraderie, competition, and plenty of laughter, the outing once again reflected the joy and community spirit that Rich embodied.

Last year’s winning team—Joey Baer, Ben Wochner, Brad McCall, and Phil Sudlow—set the bar high with a shockingly low score of 14-under-par, 56. The group was powered by former collegiate golfer Ben Wochner, whose booming drives and steady wedges kept the team in prime position. Joe and Phil drained putt after putt, while Brad kept spirits high with his trademark laugh (and a few monster drives

of his own). One highlight came on Hole #1 when Ben nearly carded an albatross, sticking his second shot just a foot from the pin for an easy eagle.

As always, the day had no shortage of memorable moments. Fritz and Ann Bateman once again served as wonderful hosts, and the course was in excellent shape. Participants enjoyed the traditional toast to Rich on the first tee, and the annual “beach bunker” free shot on #9 provided a lighthearted challenge. Style points went to Shain Reardon, who turned heads in his cutoff Hawaiian shirt, jorts, and work boots, while Kyle Dines showed off his shiny new driver in impressive fashion. And in true Rich Mullen outing spirit, there was plenty of humor—like John Carter’s daring shot over

a tree punctuated with the shout, “What time is it?!”

Beyond the fun and friendly competition, the outing also made a lasting impact. Together, participants raised a remarkable $3,200 for the GCBAA Foundation/Sticks for Kids program.

Rich would be proud to see the game he loved continuing to reach new generations through this meaningful cause.

The event continues to be more than just a golf outing—it is a celebration of Rich’s memory and the values he cherished most: friendship, laughter, and the game of golf. From heartfelt toasts to unforgettable shots, the day was a fitting tribute to a beloved friend, colleague, and golf enthusiast.

National Golf Day 2026 GCBAA MEMBERS REPRESENT INDUSTRY AT NATIONAL GOLF DAY IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

M

embers of the Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA) were actively engaged in advancing the golf industry during the 18th annual National Golf Day (NGD), held May 4–6, 2026, in Washington, D.C. Representing GCBAA were Board Members Kyle Kriewall (The Toro Company) and Mark Bland (Sunbelt Rentals), along with Dillon Hagy, Bob Nelson, and Ashley Morgan of JLG Industries/AUSA; Shane Wright of SiteOne Landscape Supply; and Regina Sosing of Links Bridges, Hunter Pates, Nate Watkin, and Chris Wright of SOX Erosion Solutions.

These individuals participated alongside their delegates and other local association representatives, joining more than 280 golf industry advocates from across the country.

National Golf Day, organized by the American Golf Industry Coalition (AGIC), provides a unified platform for industry leaders to advocate on behalf of golf’s $102 billion economic impact. GCBAA participants played a key role in strengthening the industry’s voice, building relationships with policymakers and contributing to conversations that impact

business growth, workforce development and the future of golf facility operations.

During Lobby Day on May 6, GCBAA attendees joined industry peers in more than 250 meetings with lawmakers representing 40 states. Discussions focused on critical issues including modernization of the tax code through the PAR Act, passage of the PHIT Act, improvements to the H-2B visa program and funding for the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Mall—including restoration work on the Signer’s Island memorial—and at Old Soldiers’ Golf Course at the Armed Forces Retirement Home.

These efforts included course maintenance, cleanup and improvements that will benefit veterans and the surrounding community.

GCBAA’s involvement in National Golf Day reflects its ongoing commitment to industry advocacy and collaboration. By participating alongside partners in AGIC and other coalition groups, GCBAA members help amplify the voice of golf course construction professionals and support policies that positively impact the industry.

Through events like National Golf Day and continued engagement in advocacy coalitions, GCBAA members remain dedicated to advancing the game of golf and supporting the businesses and professionals who build and maintain the facilities that make the game possible.

In addition to advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill, GCBAA participants contributed to the event’s community service initiatives.

Beyond the Injury: STRATEGIC WORKERS' COMPENSATION MANAGEMENT FOR CONSTRUCTION EXCELLENCE

ollowing the GCBAA President’s recent letter on construction safety initiatives, we think now is the perfect time to further explore job-site safety and financial management.

Hidden Costs of Workers' Compensation Most contractors understand that workers' compensation premiums are calculated using their Experience Modification Rate (EMR), but many don't realize how much control they actually have over this number via policies and procedures that are relatively simple to implement. This is extremely important because a company with an EMR of 1.2 pays 20% more in workers' comp premiums than the industry average, while a company with an 0.8 EMR sees a 20% discount. Not to mention that certain carriers will offer credits for having Returnto-work (RTW) program language in their HR policies.

The key here is that your EMR isn't just about preventing claims, it's about managing them effectively when they occur. This is where RTW programs become a strategic business tool rather than just a compliance requirement.

The Strategic Value of Return-to-Work Programs A well-designed RTW program serves multiple purposes beyond regulatory compliance. First, it demonstrates genuine care for injured workers, which reduces the likelihood of adversarial relationships and prolonged injury timelines that can escalate claim costs. Second, it provides measurable financial benefits through reduced claim severity and duration. Third, it maintains productivity by keeping experienced workers engaged in meaningful work during recovery.

Early Intervention: The first 24-48 hours after an injury are crucial. Establish clear protocols for documentation, immediate medical attention, claim reporting, and initial contact with the injured worker.

Develop Meaningful Modified Duty Options: Generic "light duty" assignments often fail because they feel punitive or meaningless to skilled workers. Instead create modified duty opportunities that utilize workers' skills and experience. Such as: • Equipment maintenance and inspection • Material organization and inventory management • Safety training assistance and mentoring • Project documentation and progress reporting • Quality control inspections • Administrative support for project management Understanding Reserve Impact: Insurance carriers set reserves (estimated total claim costs) early in the claim process.

These reserves directly impact your EMR calculation, even if the actual claim costs end up being lower. Proactive communication with your carrier's claims adjuster through your agent can help ensure reserves are realistic and adjusted downward as appropriate.

Documentation Excellence: Maintain detailed documentation of all RTW efforts, medical communications, and claim developments.

Regular Claim Reviews: Schedule quarterly reviews of all open claims with your insurance carrier and agent.

These reviews should assess medical progress, RTW opportunities, reserve adequacy, and settlement possibilities. Active engagement in claim management often reveals opportunities to reduce costs and accelerate closure.

Measuring Success and ROI: Track key performance indicators to demonstrate your program's effectiveness: • Average days from injury to return-to-work • Percentage of injured workers who return to modified duty • Average claim costs compared to industry benchmarks • EMR trends over time • Lost time injury frequency rates Long-Term Value: Effective workers' compensation management requires a long-term perspective.

EMR calculations use three years of claims data, meaning today's claim management decisions will impact your rates for years to come.

Moving Forward: As we continue building on our industry's safety culture, remember that preventing injuries and managing claims effectively are complementary strategies. A holistic risk management approach that combines robust safety programs with strategic claims management creates a competitive advantage that extends far beyond insurance costs.

The construction industry will always involve inherent risks, but how we respond to those risks defines our success.

Golf course renovation projects often come with unexpected challenges, so it’s important to budget accordingly.

T

he rate at which golf courses are investing in improvement projects is unlike anything we have seen for some time. This is due in large part to growth the golf industry has experienced in recent years, which has put many courses in a stronger financial position. These types of investments can come with a high price tag and there are many uncertainties with golf course renovations, so it is important to have a contingency fund in place while developing the budget for a project.

Even with the most detailed plan and an experienced team to carry it out, there are going to be unforeseen circumstances that develop during a construction project.

The cost of changes and delays can add up

quickly depending on how they impact the project. For example, if bad weather causes you to miss a seeding window you may need to purchase large amounts of sod to complete the work. If a contingency fund is not properly set, reserves can diminish quickly.

So, how much should be allocated for a contingency fund? A simple answer is ideally 15 percent of the total budget, and it should not be lower than 10 percent. For a largescale construction project, this is a large sum of money. However, not setting aside enough funds can result in being over budget. It can also mean making decisions during the project around what elements to cut to offset increased costs. This is not a good position to be in because once a project is underway,

the options for making cuts may be limited.

Provided a project moves along relatively smoothly, having money left over as the end approaches makes it possible to complete additional work or come in under budget.

This is much better than having to justify being over budget or making undesirable cuts to materials or the scope of work. For assistance with navigating the planning process for an upcoming project, reach out to your regional USGA agronomist.

CBS SPORTS COMMENTATOR Jim Nantz TO RECEIVE ASGCA DONALD ROSS AWARD

or four decades, hearing the voice of Jim Nantz has meant an important sporting event was taking place. Since joining CBS in 1985, Nantz has brought a level of professionalism matched only by his love of sports and the art of storytelling to viewers who share his passion. His calls from NFL games and Super Bowls, NCAA basketball games and Final Fours, and PGA Tour events, the Masters and the PGA Championship will be remembered for generations. His voice has served as the soundtrack to unforgettable moments from some of the country’s greatest golf courses, creating memories forever etched in the game’s history.

His insights, storytelling, and unmistakable passion for golf have helped millions develop a deeper appreciation for

great course design. Beyond the broadcast booth, Nantz has brought that passion to life through hands-on design projects ranging from his backyard golf holes to courses such as Tepetonka Club in Minnesota. Nantz currently serves as a golf course design consultant for Tepontka’s short course, which is being designed by OCM Golf.

Nantz’s positive impact on the game make him a worthy recipient of the 2026 ASGCA Donald Ross Award. The organization’s highest honor recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the game of golf and the profession of golf course architecture. Nantz will receive the award during the ASGCA Annual Meeting in October.

“It is fitting that Jim Nantz is the first broadcaster to receive the Donald Ross Award,” said ASGCA President Mark Mungeam. “He has been and is the ‘voice of golf’ for multiple generations of fans.

His love and respect for the game – and the courses it is played on – is evident in all of his broadcasts. Jim’s appreciation of golf history and his innate storytelling ability grow more impressive each year.”

A member of the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame and the youngest ever to be inducted into both the Pro Football and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Nantz is a four-time Emmy Award-winner and five time National Sportscaster of the Year. In 2025, he

was named Honorary Chair of the First Tee. He graduated in 1981 with a degree in radio/ television from the University of Houston, where he was recruited as a member of the golf team.

Nantz joined the CBS Sports golf team in 1986 and has anchored CBS’ golf coverage since 1994. He spent 32 years as CBS’s lead play-by-play announcer for NCAA men’s college basketball and this fall he begins his 23rd season as the lead play-by-play voice for the NFL on CBS. “My admiration for the American Society of Golf Course Architects runs deep,” Nantz said. “I have long studied their work and the thoughtful process they use to shape their masterpiece landscapes. To be recognized by this extraordinary group is truly an honor.”

In 2011, Nantz worked with Houston Methodist Hospital to create the Nantz National Alzheimer Center (NNAC), dedi­ cated to funding innovative diagnostic discoveries for early and accurate detection of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementing illnesses (www.nantzfriends.org). The center was named in honor of Jim’s late father, Jim Nantz Sr., who lived with Alzheimer’s disease for 13 years.

AWRENCE, KAN. — JUNE 2, 2026 — Chief Executive Officer Rhett Evans will conclude his tenure as CEO of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) effective Sept. 29, 2027, following nearly two decades of leadership and service to the association and the golf course management profession.

Evans will continue serving fully as CEO throughout the transition period, providing organizational leadership, strategic oversight, and direction for the association’s ongoing initiatives, member programs and industry partnerships.

During his tenure, Evans helped guide GCSAA through a period of growth and expanded influence across the golf industry, including strengthened partnerships, enhanced advocacy efforts, increased member engagement, educational and career development initiatives, and

continued leadership in environmental stewardship.

The transition timeline was developed collaboratively between Evans and the GCSAA Board of Directors to provide ample time for a thoughtful and strategic leadership succession process while maintaining continuity across the association, its membership and the broader golf industry.

“It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve this association, its members and the golf course management profession,” Evans said. “I care deeply about GCSAA, the people within this organization and the golf industry as a whole. GCSAA has an incredibly bright future, and because the association is operating from such a strong position today, this is the right time to begin a thoughtful and well-planned leadership transition.”

Working alongside GCSAA members, volunteer leaders and staff, the association has continued to elevate its visibility, influence and reputation throughout the golf industry and the communities it serves.

“Rhett has led this association as CEO with vision, passion and integrity for many years,” said GCSAA President Paul L. During the transition period, Evans will maintain his regular travel schedule, industry engagement, leadership responsibilities, and ongoing work on behalf of the association while also working closely with the GCSAA Board of Directors to help ensure a smooth and successful leadership transition.

“GCSAA has meant a tremendous amount to me and my family and will always hold a special place in my life and career,” Evans said. “While this transition represents the closing of one chapter, I am excited about the next chapter ahead and future opportunities to lead, encourage, and help make a positive difference in the lives of others. It has been an incredible run, and I look forward to continuing to serve GCSAA over the next year and finishing strong.”

PROJECT MANAGER SPOTLIGHT:

Matt Overbey, Viridity

I

f you ask Matt Overbey what makes a great project manager, he’ll tell you it’s not just about schedules or spreadsheets—it’s about trust and adaptability.

“There isn’t one right or wrong way to be a project manager,” he says. “I’ve been fortunate to have great backing and an even better team that’s given me the chance to succeed and manage the way I see fit.”

A Kansas City native, Matt has spent the last six years leading projects for Viridity, tackling everything from bunker renovations at Mozingo Lake Golf Course to driving range improvements at Oakwood Country Club. His recent work also includes projects in Colorado, South Dakota, and Missouri, where he’s managed renovations that enhance playability while honoring each course’s original design.

Matt didn’t start out planning to be a project manager. After earning his turfgrass stripes as an assistant golf course superintendent in Colorado, he returned home and joined Viridity as a Project Superintendent. Within two years, his leadership skills and calm under pressure earned him a promotion to Project Manager.

“It came naturally,” he says. “As I gained experience in both golf and construction, my confidence grew to the point where I knew I could take on more responsibility.”

When reflecting on career milestones, Matt points to projects like Brookridge Golf Course, where his team transformed a struggling nine holes into seven championship-caliber ones, while keeping the club’s full 18-hole

experience intact. But his proudest moment came with the Forest Hills Country Club short game practice area, his first ground-up construction project. “It was rewarding to take a blank canvas and turn it into something the members could immediately enjoy,” he recalls.

Like many in the industry, Matt faced his biggest professional challenge during COVID-19. “We never knew what the next day would bring,” he says. “Learning to focus only on what I could control was a huge lesson—and one I still carry with me.”

Matt’s management style is built on trust and communication. He gives his foremen the autonomy to lead, ensuring they have the tools and direction they need. Daily and weekly goals keep everyone aligned, and

small team rewards, like BBQs at the Viridity shop or outings to sporting events, help keep morale high. “Being visible and available is key,” he says. “If the team can’t reach me, the project is going to suffer.”

His calm, empathetic approach also extends to clients and stakeholders. “Every personality is different,” he explains. “I take time to figure out the best communication style for each client. Overcommunicating— especially early—usually smooths the path for the rest of the project.”

As technology reshapes the golf construction landscape, Matt has embraced new project management and estimating software while never losing sight of the hands-on nature of his work. He keeps an eye on industry trends through USGA updates and professional networks, always looking for tools that free him to spend more time on-site with his team.

Looking ahead, Matt sees technology, GPS, and even AI-driven equipment playing a larger role in the future of project management—but believes soft skills will always matter most.

“You can’t let technology keep you behind a computer,” he says. “You’ve still got to be out there, communicating, leading, and learning.”

His best advice for those just starting out?

ince 2014, Chris Flynn has served as Director of Grounds at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge, one of golf’s most recognizable family-run properties.

Growing up around the game, both his father and grandfather worked as golf course superintendents, and Flynn spent much of his childhood on New York golf courses learning the business firsthand.

He was also raised around major golf events, including the Buick Classic at Westchester Country Club, where he first learned about tournament preparation.

Along with that upbringing, Flynn studied plant science, recreation management, environmental science and construction management before building experience at several high-profile clubs and tournaments, including TPC Sawgrass and the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. After years in the industry, Flynn learned that a prerequisite meeting before being hired at Bay Hill Club & Lodge would take place inside Arnold Palmer’s home. Arriving on a Saturday to meet Palmer for the first time, he wasn’t sure what to expect.

“I walked in the house into the living room and literally his entire family was all there, his daughter, all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. It was a family gathering. Mr. Palmer was sitting on the couch with his newest great-grandchild, who was his first time meeting the baby, and he had the baby in his lap. They sat me down next to him on the couch, and that's how we had our conversation.”

there that day. Flynn said Palmer was every bit the family man he was portrayed to be and admires how Saunders and her husband, Roy, have continued that atmosphere while living on the site year-round and remaining heavily involved in operations at both Bay Hill and Latrobe Country Club in Pennsylvania, where Palmer was born and raised. “That’s how they do things. It’s a family business and it’s special,” he said.

Built in the early 1960s, Bay Hill spans more than 400 acres, including golf, lodging and a marina with 100 member boats leading into the Butler Chain of Lakes. Palmer purchased the property after falling in love with the course and helped establish Bay Hill as a PGA TOUR stop through the Citrus Open, now known as the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Today, Flynn manages a 40-person grounds team with many employees having worked at Bay Hill for decades. “We have a great team, and it’s just a great place to work in such a familyoriented atmosphere. In some ways, we are really a mom-and-pop operation. It’s the most opposite you could get from a corporate-type atmosphere or stuffy private country club.”

Work Behind Tournament Conditions Most golf fans know Bay Hill through one

week each March when the PGA TOUR arrives for the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Television coverage focuses on firm greens, demanding rough and one of the more recognizable tournament setups in professional golf. What viewers rarely see is the constant preparation required to maintain those conditions across the club’s 27 holes, which goes on throughout the year.

Preparations for tournament season begin long before grandstands arrive.

The team performs aggressive verticutting once annually in June, then dials back moisture in October ahead of overseeding in midNovember. From then through March, the course shifts fully into tournament preparation mode.

PGA TOUR players are highly aware of turfgrass differences and how playing conditions change depending on grass type. “Even with rough, if you have a really tall bermuda versus tall ryegrass, that’s a whole different ballgame.”

That attention to detail helped shape Bay Hill’s 2016 no-till conversion to Celebration® Bermudagrass on tees, fairways, approaches and collars. After consulting with PGA TOUR agronomists, Celebration quickly emerged as the preferred choice, a variety now used at more than 8 PGA TOUR stops.

“It was really a short process in landing

on Celebration,” Flynn explained. “Taking everything into account — the wear tolerance and transition — Celebration was kind of a no-brainer for us and it has met every expectation. It’s been a homerun for us.”

Despite tournament pressure and constant play, the course rarely requires large-scale resodding after the event. Most repairs come from vehicle traffic associated with tournament infrastructure rather than spectator wear. due to its proximity to a tree. “We decided to remove it, and it probably makes the hole play easier. But 11 is a very difficult hole,” Flynn said with a laugh. “For handicappers, it makes them very happy. Not many golfers complain about one less bunker on the golf course.”

At the par-four 15th, he described it as a “sweeper hole,” one that ranks among the most difficult holes because tee shots struggle to hold the fairway. “This is a hole they should go down a club. But they take out the driver because the whole landing area slopes away. They can’t keep their ball in the fairway and getting to the green becomes a problem,” Flynn shared.

Bay Hill’s closing stretch remains one of the more recognizable finishes on the PGA TOUR schedule, with the extremely short par-five 16th followed by the narrow par-three 17th stretching beyond 200 yards.

Members often play many of the same pin locations used during the Arnold Palmer Invitational, although TOUR officials rotate placements from year to year. The only recurring exception is the 18th green, where the pin is traditionally on the far right. The finishing hole demands precision off the tee toward one of the narrowest landing areas on the course.

This spring, Flynn and Bay Hill were featured in the Celebration on Tour video series, offering

a behind-the-scenes look at the preparation, maintenance and people responsible for PGA TOUR stops using Celebration Bermudagrass.

Nearly a decade after Bay Hill’s conversion, the variety continues to perform well under heavy member play and Florida stress.

For Flynn, the job is not about preparing for a single week each March. It’s about creating consistent conditions year-round while continuing the culture and environment Palmer established decades ago.

od Solutions Director of Florida Operations Mark Kann was elected President of the Florida Turfgrass Association (FTGA) during the annual conference held at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala Sept. 30–Oct. 2, 2025.

Kann, who joined Sod Solutions in 2021, brings three decades of experience spanning golf course management, university research and industry leadership. His new role marks what he calls ‘a full circle moment’ in his career. “I’ve always loved serving and helping others and it’s just another chance to do that,” he said. “Being voted in shows the confidence my colleagues in this industry have in me to run this organization and that’s humbling. I’m ready to go.”

A Career Rooted in Service Kann’s path through the turfgrass industry began on golf courses across Florida, where he served as both superintendent and assistant superintendent before spending 14 years managing the turf research facility at the University of Florida’s Plant Science Research and Education Unit in Citra. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Turfgrass Science and a Master of Science in Horticultural Sciences from UF.

He has held leadership roles across multiple allied associations, including serving as president of both the Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association (Florida GCSA) and the Seven Rivers Golf Course Superintendents Association. He also chaired the FGCSA Education and BMP Committee for nearly a decade, where he helped develop the association’s nationally recognized Golf BMP Certification Program.

In his current role with Sod Solutions, Kann works closely with superintendents, turf managers, sod producers and landscapers across the state. This ongoing connection to every segment of the industry makes his role as FTGA president a natural fit. “We service all these different segments by providing grass and working with them, so it fits really easily for me. I love the industry and this just feels like another way to serve it.”

Continuing the Work As president, Kann plans to build on the association’s existing momentum while focusing on collaboration and unity. He emphasized the FTGA’s role in education, research and advocacy. “We support all segments of the industry,” he said. “We provide quality education and have a great relationship with the University of Florida, which gives us access to top researchers and resources.”

The association will continue prioritizing research that addresses real challenges for Florida turfgrass professionals, including projects that improve environmental stewardship, support best management practices and guide policy decisions with science. Kann also pointed to the importance of raising funds for the Florida Turfgrass Research Foundation, which provides student scholarships and supports research benefiting multiple industry sectors.

Serving his second stint on the FTGA Board,

Kann said he’s encouraged by the board’s energy and commitment. He credited much of the association’s success to the hard work of FTGA Association Manager Heather Russo, the Executive Committee and Immediate Past President Eric Dixon for their leadership and dedication to the organization. “The challenge with any association is that everyone involved has full-time jobs and families,” he said. “I’m inspired by how much time people still give to this organization. Every bit of effort matters, and I want to keep that momentum going.”

Russo said she looks forward to Kann serving as FTGA president, noting his long tenure in the industry and the strong relationships he brings.

She added that, like many past presidents, Kann has a passion for industry unity and will continue to grow the association through those connections. “Through this industry, it all starts as business colleagues that lead to industry family,” Russo said. “Not only has Mark been instrumental as a director on the board, but he has also been a true friend as he has been there for me through a family crisis, to make my new home have an incredible front yard and to witnessing him help others. This industry is a blessing and it is wonderful to have Mark in this industry.

One Unified Voice and Leading Forward A key focus for Kann’s presidency will be uniting turfgrass professionals across golf, sports, landscape and sod sectors under one statewide voice while also investing in the next generation of leaders. “The more allied associations we can partner with, the more successful we will be,” he said. “We’ve heard time and time again from the Commissioner of Agriculture that they want Florida coming to Tallahassee as a unified turfgrass industry.

That’s how we ensure our voice is heard.”

He believes collaboration doesn’t require full agreement. “Even if we don’t agree on

MOVERS & SHAPERS everything, we can work together on shared goals to make the industry stronger.”

He acknowledged that water use, fertilizer and regulatory pressures will always challenge the industry but believes the path forward depends on science and stewardship. “We’ve spent years building Best Management Practices programs to work with the state and show our commitment to doing things right.

Significant time, money and effort have gone into this research, much of it through the University of Florida, and it deserves to be heard. The science exists for a reason.”

He finds it inspiring how proactive the industry is when issues arise, always looking for ways to educate the public and find solutions together, and credits the many mentors and colleagues who have shaped his approach to leadership over the years. “I’ve covered a lot of ground in this industry and learned from so many good people,” he said. “I don’t have all the answers, but I’ll always find someone who does. That’s how I try to live and lead.”

He said he values the exchange of ideas and experience within the turfgrass community. “I always tell people I have as much time for you as you have for me. There’s so much wisdom in this industry, and I never want to miss the chance to learn from it.”

Looking ahead, Kann also wants to engage

more students and young professionals. This year, the FTGA partnered with the Florida GCSA, the Florida Nursery Growers (FNGLA), the Florida Future Farmers of America Association and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) to launch a new mentorship program pairing high school participants with superintendents across the state. Students will form cohorts to gain hands-on management experience ahead of a statewide competition at the 2026 GCSAA Conference in Orlando.

“That’s a big initiative because we need more leaders and future leaders in every segment of this industry,” Kann said. “It’s inspiring to see the number of schools already wanting to get involved.”

Driving Engagement and Growth The recent fall Florida Turfgrass Conference, which grew from about 300 attendees last year to nearly 500 this year, was driven by partnering with UF and the CFSTMA to combine the Citra Field Day with the event.

Kann thanked everyone who helped make the two and a half days in Ocala a success and encouraged members to stay engaged and take part in shaping the organization’s future.

Kann said the FTGA’s strength lies in the sheer scope of the industry it represents.

“The FTGA looks at the industry from a broad

spectrum. When you look at the number of golf courses, sports fields, sod farms and landscaped acres compared to other states, no one even comes close to what we have here. I think we should be the strongest organization in the country. “Working with Dr. Taliaferro to establish production guidelines for Oregon was essential,” said Dr. Brilman. “That foundation continues to be a key message we share with turfgrass managers today. Yukon is built on proven science
