As the Season of Giving comes and goes, each of us reflects upon the need that exists in our community and how we might help. Each day at the Y, however, is a powerful reminder that need is not seasonal and that too many of our neighbors struggle throughout the year. The Y, with generous support of donors, works day in and day out to alleviate these struggles; helping one person at a time to fulfill our mission to build a strong community. One member — a scholarship recipient — couldn’t have framed more clearly just how crucial our Y is when he said, “I am able to work out and stay healthy even when I have very little money. I don’t have to be poor and unhealthy.” I am thankful that the Y can play a positive role in this man’s efforts get back on his feet. Our focus on healthy living also includes working with partners to deliver a variety of health workshops, including the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program, across all of Vermont. One of our success stories is featured in the current issue of Diabetic Living. When diagnosed with prediabetes, Judi Schwartz reached out to the Y knowing that the group approach of these workshops might be just what she needed. “Every struggle I heard was something I had worked through myself,” Schwartz says in the article. Her experience highlights the sense of community that infuses Y programs. Connection with our Y community starts at the very youngest age because parents know how important a strong start is for their children. Parents also know that availability and the cost of child care, particularly high-quality care, can be significant obstacles. A family recently made this appeal: “As most families, my husband and I struggle financially even though we both work hard full time in our community. My family lives paycheck to paycheck because we know how important child care is and we are willing to struggle with other areas of our life to provide quality care for our children. We would greatly appreciate any assistance that you could offer.” The Y knows these struggles and, by providing $250,608 in financial assistance this past year, is taking concrete steps to help families just like this give their children the start they deserve. So, this Giving Season, I hope you will keep in mind the need in our community, the role our Y plays throughout the year in support of our neighbors, and how your donations to the Y help make this all possible.

Our established programs are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and have received 5 STARs from the state of Vermont. Camp Abnaki, located on the shores of Lake Champlain in North Hero, provides a traditional boys’ overnight summer camp program, with an emphasis on character development, skill building and fun. Boys are provided with an experience designed to foster personal growth and independence. The friendships they make and memories they take away will last a lifetime. OUR SWIM LESSONS BUILD SKILLS, CONFIDENCE AND CHARACTER
Our experienced swim instructors teach the nationally recognized Y Progressive Swim Program, with a focus on personal safety, stroke development, and rescue techniques. This program promotes personal growth for your swimmer in a fun, caring and safe atmosphere.
Registration is open NOW and pre-registration by level is required. Winter session of swim lessons runs Tuesday, Jan. 3 - Saturday, Feb. 25.
FIRST PLUNGE (Ages 6 mos. to 5 yrs.) These 30 minute introductory classes use the bond between caregiver and child to create a safe and welcoming environment. Classes focus on comfort, balance and movement and are designed to allow the children to have fun in the water while caregivers guide them through skills such as bubble blowing, kicking, paddling and jumping. One adult must accompany each child in the water. Children that are not potty trained must wear a proper swim diaper. There is no swim lesson evaluation required; please register by age.
Shrimp / Kipper / Inia (Ages 6 - 18 mos.)
For children from 6 to 18 months, this class introduces parents and their infants to the pool and allows beginning swimmers to progress from water adjustment to basic skills. Instruction helps parents work with their children and focuses upon on creating a fun time for parents and children through water games, songs and basic movements. Perch (Ages 19 - 36 months)
This class continues to provide the highest quality of early water experiences for children from 19 months to 36 months. Children will work towards swimming independently with support from both the instructor and their caregiver while continuing to develop safety skills and early swimming skills through games, song and playful instruction. Perch Plus (Ages 29 - 36 months)
For children from 29-36 months, Perch Plus is for children that have completed at least one session of Perch. Caregivers remain in the water with children as instructors work towards preparing children for Parent Pike or even Pike 1. This class is for our more advanced, younger swimmers who are demonstrating bubble blowing skills and swimming independently with flotation and limited caregiver support. Parent Pike (Ages 3 - 5)
This transitional class is for children who are not ready to be without an adult caregiver in the water and introduces skills to the child and adult together. GAINING CONFIDENCE (Ages 3 - 5) Our pre-school age swim lessons encourage comfort and independence through skills, games and fun. Children learn safe pool behavior and adjust to the aquatic environment with flotation aids. Parents are encouraged to be a support, but are not present in the water. Each class is 30 minutes long.
Pike 1 (Ages 3 - 5)
Children are introduced to their first experience swimming without a parent. Instructors work with children to teach independence and confidence in the water through basic swim skills and safety. Instructors focus on stroke development, endurance, independence and confidence. Children must be comfortable on their back and putting their face in the water while swimming. Flying fish and shark instructors continue working on stroke development and stamina building to work towards completing 100 yards of front crawl, backstroke, butterfly and breast stroke. A focus on water safety is maintained as flying fish and sharks are becoming young adults who might be thinking about jobs as swim instructors and lifeguards. Home School Swim
Are you a home school family? Time to take some swim lessons at the Y! We’ll join together for 45 minutes of a structured swim lesson program geared towards the home school children in our community. We are hoping that through some physical activity, together we can make some new connections for children and add some play into their day! The Stroke School is a intended for young swimmers new to swim team who need significant development before moving to the competitive team. The program runs in 7 or 8 week sessions throughout the year. Stroke School teaches swimmers the physical skills/ strokes while also educating them on the aspects of being part of a competitive swimming team. COMPETITIVE PROGRAMS The Dynamo Swim Team is structured to promote the development and success of our swimmers. Program placement is based on age, and swimming ability as well as emotional, social and physical development. Practices for all levels below are held in the lap pool.
Senior Swim Team is the highest level of Dynamo and is designed for our older competitive swimmers. The goal is to prepare swimmers for meet competition through specific and focused training. Advanced swimmers work all four strokes in both distance and sprint-based workouts. Dryland and strength training are key parts of the workout. We expect swimmers to be making at least 3 practices a week and competing in most scheduled meets. Practices are offered 8 times per week for 2.25 hours per practice. YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-led National Diabetes Prevention Program. It is free of charge to qualified participants, thanks to a partnership with the Vermont Blueprint for Health. The Program is a 12-month, lifestyle behavior intervention comprised of 16 weekly sessions followed by monthly maintenance sessions. This is an evidence-based program for adults at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. New sessions starting statewide soon! Giving back and providing support to our neighbors
We know that the need for high-quality child care is great and that affordability has been identified as a significant challenge to access. At the Y, this doesnâ€™t come as a surprise. We know that families are challenged. Last year, 47% of children attending Y infant, toddler and preschool programs received financial assistance through state subsidy, a Y scholarship, or both.
Last year, 157 families received a total of $250,608 in Y assistance to ensure their children could access highquality care through Y infant, toddler and preschool programs. The first years of a childâ€™s life are the most crucial for brain development and Y scholarships allow families to access high-quality early care and education programs, helping to give kids a strong and vitally important start to life.
Each year, over 1,000 kids enroll in Y swim lessons, receive free water safety classes, or participate on our Y youth swim teams. Children learn a potentially lifesaving skill, gain confidence, become more responsible and get healthy through Y swim programs. These programs are growing and through scholarships, the Y brings these benefits to low-income and New American children.
The amount of Y financial assistance provided has tripled from just 10 years ago.
