The Greater Burlington YMCA is a non-profit organization with a mission to build a strong community by involving youth, adults and families in programs and activities that develop spirit, mind and body.

Dear Members and Community,

POMERLEAU FAMILY Y

On June 1st, we held our Annual Meeting, where we celebrated accomplishments and gave thanks. Strictly by the numbers, 2016 was another wonderful year—something Y staff, members, partners, and donors can look back upon with great pride. Here are just a few of the ways we made a difference: • 2,700 children were enrolled in Y infant, toddler, preschool, afterschool, and summer camp programs • 1,500 Vermonters participated in 251 free health selfmanagement workshops across Vermont’s 14 counties • 1,000 kids learned to swim or received water safety lessons through the Y. • 1 out of 3 kids that attended Y summer day camps at Camp Koda and Camp Greylock received a Y scholarship • 54% of children attending Y infant, toddler, and preschool programs received tuition assistance

• The Y provided $600,000 in financial assistance As I sat to prepare my remarks for the Annual Meeting, the lyrics from the opening song of the Broadway play Rent came to mind. The song asks “how do you measure a year (525,600 minutes)?” The reason this song kept going through my head—so strongly that I sang a few bars at the meeting—is that the answer is ultimately LOVE! An operation like the Y is fueled by love. We were joined at our meeting by leaders of several other nonprofits, with whom we channel our collective love for the community into lifting everyone up. We really LOVE our members who hang with us in our aging facility and whose loyalty literally keep us running. We have big love for our donors who help us in an ongoing way through support of our annual fund and those who have already joined us in our Staying in the Heart campaign to build a new Y, and for that we are grateful.

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve — and that the values and skills they learn are vital building blocks for quality of life.

FOR HEALTHY LIVING

And finally, I cannot thank enough the people who really put the love in the Y—our staff. It’s their love—love of kids, of helping people be fit and well, of service to our community, of seeing our members and children’s faces every day—that is at the root of all we do.

We’re passionate about improving our community’s health and well being by providing the resources and guidance to help maintain or improve physical fitness; address individual health issues such as childhood obesity and diabetes; and achieve true balance among body, mind and spirit.

We at the Y know about love and we’re honored to have the love of our community in return.

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

We have an amazingly supportive board of directors and Staying in the Heart capital campaign cabinet who share their love of the Y through the hard work they do for us.

YOUTH SWIM LESSONS

Our experienced swim instructors teach the nationally recognized Y Progressive Swim Program, with a focus on personal safety, stroke development, and rescue techniques. This program promotes personal growth for your swimmer in a fun, caring and safe atmosphere. To work with your family’s busy summer schedules, swim lessons will be offered in three formats. We will offer our traditional, once weekly lessons on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings that start the week of June 25 and end August 20. Additionally, we will be offering two-week intensive sessions that meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 9:30 - 11am of the following weeks: July 11th & 18th, July 25th & August 1st, and August 8th & 15th. Pre-registration by level is required. To schedule a swim evaluation to ensure your child starts at the appropriate level, contact Jess Lukas, Youth and Family Coordinator, at 652-8143 or jlukas@gbymca.org.

FIRST PLUNGE (Ages 6 mos. to 5 yrs.) These 30 minute introductory classes use the bond between caregiver and child to create a safe and welcoming environment. Classes focus on comfort, balance and movement and are designed to allow the children to have fun in the water while caregivers guide them through skills such as bubble blowing, kicking, paddling and jumping. One adult must accompany each child in the water. Children that are not potty trained must wear a proper swim diaper. There is no swim lesson evaluation required; please register by age.
