The Greater Burlington YMCA is a non-profit organization with a mission to build a strong community by involving youth, adults and families in programs and activities that develop spirit, mind and body.


Dear Members and Community, Welcome to spring! As we prepare to send this latest Program Guide to the press and a snow storm is in the forecast, that first sentence is perhaps more of a question than a declaration. Nonetheless, I am confident that spring will come . . . eventually. I have been fighting the urge to write a clichéd “spring is a time for change” message, but have given in because I am truly excited about what is happening at our Y. Yes, we have big changes ahead with the new Y we are working towards, but I am talking about ways we are making the Y a more dynamic and relevant organization today. Allow me to share information about some of our new and revamped programs. Parenting Workshop Series – All parents quickly learn that raising a child is as challenging as it is rewarding. In an informal setting, this program uses readings, discussion and personal sharing to help parents examine their own parenting styles, celebrate successes, and discuss challenges.

Martial Arts – Our new Director of Membership Development, Jeff Lamkins, is passionate about many things. Not the least among them is martial arts. Accomplished in several disciplines, including a 5th degree black belt in Kenpo, we are incredibly fortunate that he has started this program; bringing his skill, expertise, and years of experience to our community.


Summer Camps – We are pleased to launch our Teen Community Engagement Camps, offered as six one-week opportunities this summer. In addition, Camp Greylock, our co-ed day camp at Kingsland Bay State Park, is reimagined for 2017 with a focus on hands-on, outdoor learning and adventure.

Swimming on the Spectrum – I am incredibly thankful for a 2017 partnership with Autism Speaks to offer six one-on-one adaptive swim lessons to individuals on the autism spectrum. We anticipate that the grant funds we have received will allow us to work with upwards of 50 kids and adults. Lights, Music, Action – A new twist on a few old favorites. Friday nights our Y gym truly comes alive with heart-thumping music and dance club style lights. First, for Party Fit, a high-energy group fitness class, and then for Blacklight Dodgeball. Yes, dodgeball. Not the anxiety-producing, grade school variety, but the kindler-gentler, good clean fun kind. It is something to see. Babysitter Training – Great for youth looking to get their first job or for those kids who need the skills to responsibly and safely care for a younger sibling while parents are at work. We are working hard to provide our members with new and interesting experiences and to continue our work as a community resource. This is best accomplished, however, when we hear from you. So, please never hesitate to chime in with a new idea. In the meantime, enjoy your spring and I look forward to seeing you at the Y.

Y Early Childhood Program at the YMCA

The Y Early Childhood Programs provide quality program for children ages 0 to 5 years, fostering social, emotional, physical, cognitive, creative, and healthy development through enriching experiences and positive relationships. Our established programs are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and have received 5 STARs from the state of Vermont.

Y Early Childhood Program at Jericho Elementary

Let the Y help you host a memorable Birthday party for your child! With gym and pool party options for children of all ages, your day will truly be special! The Y is available for parties Saturday afternoons. All parties are 2 hours in length, 90 minutes for a specific activity and 30 minutes in a room for party time. BURLINGTON This FREE program offers a place for children 0 - 5 years old and their caregivers to learn and grow together during the school year. • Overnight Camp for boys currently in grades 1 - 10 • Day Camp for boys currently in grades K - 4 Located on the shores of Lake Champlain in North Hero, Camp Abnaki provides a traditional boys summer camp program with an emphasis on character development, skill building and fun. Boys are provided with an experience designed to foster personal growth and independence. The friendships and memories they make last a lifetime. You can bring your family to camp. Community Engagement Camps

Community Engagement Camps are service oriented and are gaining popularity with good reason! These camps offer a fun experience similar to regular camps, but with a community service component which provides an educational adventure with responsibility. Camp Greylock

• Co-ed day camp for kids currently in grades K - 5 Outdoor summer adventure camp located at Kingsland Bay State Park in Ferrisburgh. Free transportation to camp each day from Chittenden County. Camp Koda

• Co-ed day camp for kids currently in grades K - 6 State licensed summer program located in Burlington, Essex, Georgia, Underhill and Waterbury. Each week follows a theme and includes hands-on learning including crafts, physical activities and games, swimming, field trips, science, and enrichments. Registration is underway now! Specialty Summer Camps

We set aside several hours of pool time each week, including on weekends, for our family members to enjoy recreational swim time together. For safety, children who are non-swimmers must have an adult in the water with them at all times and anyone wishing to swim in the deep end must pass a lifeguard administered swim test. Autism Awareness Swim

Saturday, April 22, 3:00-5:00pm The Y strives to serve children and adults of all abilities. This event is an important step toward that goal and is supported by the generosity of a grant from Autism Speaks; a grant that will help us provide adaptive swim lessons to those with autism throughout 2017. We invite everyone in the autism community to enjoy the comfort of our 89° program pool for this Autism Awareness Swim.

Our experienced swim instructors teach the nationally recognized Y Progressive Swim Program, with a focus on personal safety, stroke development, and rescue techniques. This program promotes personal growth for your swimmer in a fun, caring and safe atmosphere.

Registration is open NOW and pre-registration by level is required. To schedule a swim evaluation to ensure your child starts at the appropriate level, contact Jess Lukas, Youth and Family Coordinator, at 652-8143 or Lessons begin the week of May 1, and run for 8 weeks.

FIRST PLUNGE (Ages 6 mos. to 5 yrs.) These 30 minute introductory classes use the bond between caregiver and child to create a safe and welcoming environment. Classes focus on comfort, balance and movement and are designed to allow the children to have fun in the water while caregivers guide them through skills such as bubble blowing, kicking, paddling and jumping. One adult must accompany each child in the water. Children that are not potty trained must wear a proper swim diaper. There is no swim lesson evaluation required; please register by age.

Shrimp / Kipper / Inia (Ages 6 - 18 mos.)

For children from 6 to 18 months, this class introduces parents and their infants to the pool and allows beginning swimmers to progress from water adjustment to basic skills. Instruction helps parents work with their children and focuses upon on creating a fun time for parents and children through water games, songs and basic movements. Perch (Ages 19 - 36 months)

This class continues to provide the highest quality of early water experiences for children from 19 months to 36 months. Children will work towards swimming independently with support from both the instructor and their caregiver while continuing to develop safety skills and early swimming skills through games, song and playful instruction. Perch Plus (Ages 29 - 36 months)

For children from 29-36 months, Perch Plus is for children that have completed at least one session of Perch. Caregivers remain in the water with children as instructors work towards preparing children for Parent Pike or even Pike 1. This class is for our more advanced, younger swimmers who are demonstrating bubble blowing skills and swimming independently with flotation and limited caregiver support. Parent Pike (Ages 3 - 5)

This transitional class is for children who are not ready to be without an adult caregiver in the water and introduces skills to the child and adult together. By graduation day, the caregiver is out of the water and children are comfortable on their own. Thursdays 4:30 pm - 5:00 pm Saturdays 10:30 am - 11:00 am $111 Members / $179 Non-Members

GAINING CONFIDENCE (Ages 3 - 5) Our pre-school age swim lessons encourage comfort and independence through skills, games and fun. Children learn safe pool behavior and adjust to the aquatic environment with flotation aids. Parents are encouraged to be a support, but are not present in the water. Each class is 30 minutes long.

Pike 1 (Ages 3 - 5)

Children are introduced to their first experience swimming without a parent. Instructors work with children to teach independence and confidence in the water through basic swim skills and safety. Our school-age swim lessons are designed to encourage comfort and independence in the water through skill building, games and fun. The higherlevel classes offer an athletic fitness element. These lessons are 45 minutes long.

Polliwog (Ages 6 - 9)

Guppy (Ages 6 - 10)

Our guppies start to transition from the program pool into the lap pool. They begin rhythmic breathing, refine their backstroke, build endurance and learn safety skills all while having fun.

After graduating Pike 1, instructors continue to work with swimmers on independence and confidence in the water. Stroke development is introduced and less flotation is used as a Pike 2.

Eel (Ages 3 - 5)

Instructors focus on stroke development, endurance, independence and confidence. Children must be comfortable on their back and putting their face in the water while swimming. Minnows work on refining strokes, building endurance and begin diving. Minnows should be able to complete 25 yards of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke. Flying Fish / Shark (Ages 9 - 16)

Flying fish and shark instructors continue working on stroke development and stamina building to work towards completing 100 yards of front crawl, backstroke, butterfly and breast stroke. A focus on water safety is maintained as flying fish and sharks are becoming young adults who might be thinking about jobs as swim instructors and lifeguards. SAFE & ACTIVE FUTURE (Ages 6 - 16)

Home School Swim

Are you a home school family? Time to take some swim lessons at the Y! We’ll join together for 45 minutes of a structured swim lesson program geared towards the home school children in our community. We are hoping that through some physical activity, together we can make some new connections for children and add some play into their day!

Join us for some summer pre-season swimming to work on stroke technique and get back in shape to prepare for summer swim teams. All programs run April 3 - June 1, 2017.

Jr. Age Group

Junior Age Group practice is designed for ages 6-9 with at least 1 year of swim team experience.

Adaptive Swim Lessons (All ages)

Age Group

One-on-one 30-minute lessons for people of all ages with physical or developmental needs. An informational application must be completed prior to the start of your lessons. Age Group practice is designed for swimmers ages 9-12 with at least 1 year of swim team experience.

Private and Semi-Private Swim Lessons

Senior Swim Team is the highest level of Dynamo and is designed for ages 12-18 with 1 year of swim team experience.

(Groups of 2 – 5) Enjoy a one-on-one, personalized swim lesson with a qualified instructor no matter what your age! Your instructor will create lessons to specifically meet your needs and goals. INTRODUCTORY PROGRAMS The Stroke School for 5-8 year olds

The Stroke School is a intended for young swimmers new to swim team who need significant development before moving to the competitive team. The program runs in 7 or 8 week sessions throughout the year. Stroke School teaches swimmers the physical skills/ strokes while also educating them on the aspects of being part of a competitive swimming team. Swimmers are expected to attend both sessions each week. 5:00-6:00 pm

SUMMER SWIM TEAM PREP PROGRAMS The Dynamo Swim Team is structured to promote the development and success of our swimmers. Program placement is based on age and swimming ability, as well as emotional, social and physical development. Practices for all levels below are held in the lap pool.

This course provides youth ages 11-15 who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly care for children and infants. Training will help participants develop leadership skills, learn how to develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe and help children behave, as well as learn about basic child care and basic first aid. Masters Swim Team (ages 19+)

(Ages 15 & up) Looking for a rewarding job? Train to be a lifeguard! Our comprehensive Lifeguard Training course includes accident prevention, lifeguarding techniques, emergency systems, and rescue skills. It also includes CPR for the professional Rescuer with AED and First Aid.

The Dynamo Masters Swim Team is a great group of dedicated swimmers across a range of skill and experience levels. Our coaches provide a daily workout to challenge your strength and stamina along with lots of feedback about stroke technique. Some of our swimmers compete in meets around the region but competition is not required. All swimmers must be able to complete 300 yards of swimming before joining the program.

This 9 week summer league team is open to those ages 6+ who can continuously swim 25 yards of at least one stroke. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-led National Diabetes Prevention Program. It is free of charge to qualified participants, thanks to a partnership with the Vermont Blueprint for Health. Swim Stroke Refinement Using Underwater Video

Designed for the pregnant or postpartum woman, this medically approved class consists of safe exercises in the water to help relieve lower back pain and swelling as well as to maintain muscle tone and increase blood circulation. Suitable for non-swimmers.

During this 45-minute session in the lap pool, a coach will help you to identify changes to improve your swim stroke(s) using a submersible iPad. Underwater video will be taken and reviewed to provide immediate and detailed stroke feedback. After the lesson, the video will be emailed to you with voiced over feedback related to the lesson.
