The Greater Burlington YMCA is a non-profit organization with a mission to build a strong community by involving youth, adults and families in programs and activities that develop spirit, mind and body.

POMERLEAU FAMILY Y

Dear Members and Community,

266 College St | 862-9622 (YMCA)

It’s only spring, and temperatures are certainly slow to rise here in Vermont, yet I am already excited just thinking about the incredible opportunities that await this summer to get in the water. I love to be in and around the water and consider myself fortunate to live so close to Lake Champlain, smaller lakes and ponds, and an abundance of streams and rivers. My perspective on summer has, however, changed since starting in my role here at the Y. Never has it been clearer to me the need that exists in our community for greater access to water safety lessons and swim instruction. I’m grateful that my three sons had access to swim instruction at an early age, including right here at the Y, but realize this isn’t the case for all children. If a parent isn’t comfortable around water, they are less likely to acclimate their children to the water. It also isn’t hard to see how many working parents who struggle to pay their bills are challenged to find the time and money needed to help a child become comfortable and safe around water. I am incredibly proud of the work the Y and our dedicated team of aquatics professionals does in this area. Over many years of hard work, our team has forged relationships in the community that extends our reach to many who might not otherwise have the chance to access water safety and swim lessons. A generous community has helped in this effort, allowing us to offer financial assistance where needed and free classes when possible. Shouldn’t it be this way, particularly in Vermont, where we are practically surrounded by water? Competency around water can’t be a “nice to have.” We must see it for what it is, an essential life skill. At Dartmouth College, to graduate a student must first complete a swim requirement. You may respond, “yes, but they are an elite school.” That is just my point. Their approach is certainly an exception to the norm, but it shouldn’t be. Swimming cannot be something for the few. As a community, we need to be more creative in our approach to addressing this issue. Every child in our community should have access to swim instruction and water safety. I don’t have the solution and the Y, alone, is not the answer. However, we will be part of a much needed discussion and, when possible, we will lead. This time next year, we will be in our new Y. As incredibly excited as I am to be in a new building, we must look beyond the “newness” of the physical space and become inspired to discover what we can accomplish with our refreshed and renewed position of prominence as a community organization. Over our long history, the Y has consistently found ways to adapt to the changing needs of who we serve. I know that we can again. I invite you to step forward and share your ideas as to how we will ensure that our children grow up to be safe and capable swimmers, giving them the chance to enjoy all that Vermont, and life, has to offer.
