Recently, I have been thinking about the concept of the three “C’s,” something I first shared with you in this same space early in my tenure. I have previously written about the opportunity the Y has to help people become capable, connected and contributing. This resonates with me not only with respect to those served by Y programs, but how we support our staff. My role gives me the privilege of receiving praise for the work of the Y – the impact we’ve made on a child’s life, wellness goals achieved, or the genuine sense of community that is enjoyed by our members. These compliments give me great joy, but I am quick to share that it is our staff that have acted as the agent for change in each of these instances. Y staff are the foundation upon which all of our successes are built. My job, in working with Y leadership, is to ensure that we support this invaluable foundation. I know that this is important to all of you, as some of the most impassioned feedback I receive is about staff. I believe my work starts with valuing our staff as professionals. This requires us to support them through timely, worthwhile, and sufficient training to be their best selves and to give them the opportunity to grow professionally. This isn’t always easy when balancing a budget with strong competing interests. In my time here I believe we’ve made progress on this front, but I recognize that we must remain focused on this important goal. While it isn’t glamorous, we have made great strides in shoring up many Y policies and procedures. We have accomplished this work because we empowered our staff, respected their expertise and experience, and allowed them to lead the way. It may come as no surprise that compensation is one of the tougher nuts to crack. We have dedicated staff who understand and embrace the community-oriented work we accomplish. However, that devotion to mission cannot justify anything but an equivalent commitment on our part to provide fair wages. I am happy that we made progress in this area this past fall for many in our organization—progress I will work to extend more broadly as I balance available resources with need. Our ability to give those in the community a chance to learn, grow, and thrive through a sense of being capable, connected, and contributing, is strengthened when we first give our staff every opportunity to embrace these three “C’s.” I am excited by the prospect that all that I’ve outlined above in support of staff—and more—will be amplified when we can open a new, modern Y. The Y Early Childhood Programs provide quality program for children ages 0 to 5 years, fostering social, emotional, physical, cognitive, creative, and healthy development through enriching experiences and positive relationships. Our established programs are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and have received 5 STARs from the State of Vermont. Registration for Y preschool is ongoing. Early Learning Readiness Program (ELR)

BURLINGTON This FREE program offers a place for children 0 - 5 years old and their caregivers to learn and grow together during the school year. Children develop social, verbal and motor skills through active play, while caregivers learn how to help children build skills at home. Free snacks and engaging activities are available at every program site and anyone that is a caregiver — family, friends, neighbors, family support workers — is invited to attend. Located on the shores of Lake Champlain in North Hero, Camp Abnaki provides a traditional boys summer camp program with an emphasis on character development, skill building and fun. Boys are provided with an experience designed to foster personal growth and independence. The friendships and memories they make last a lifetime. Camp Abnaki also has programs for families. Our Labor Day Family Camp and Father/Son weekend provide unique opportunities for family bonding in a natural setting. You can also rent Camp Abnaki for your next corporate retreat, wedding, school trip, family reunion, or other function.

Camp Greylock

• Co-ed day camp for kids currently in grades K - 5 Outdoor summer adventure camp located at Kingsland Bay State Park in Ferrisburgh. Free transportation to camp each day from Chittenden County. Activities include swimming, archery, crafts, environment exploration, canoeing and other skill building activities. For more information contact or 652-8139.

Camp Koda

• Co-ed day camp for kids currently in grades K - 6 State licensed summer program located in Burlington, Essex, Georgia, Underhill and Waterbury. Each week follows a theme and includes hands-on learning including crafts, physical activities and games, swimming, field trips, science, and enrichments. Registration is underway now! Specialty Summer Camps

We set aside several hours of pool time each week, including on weekends, for our family members to enjoy recreational swim time together. For safety, children who are non-swimmers must have an adult in the water with them at all times and anyone wishing to swim in the deep end must pass a lifeguard administered swim test. Y Afterschool Programs

Youth Classes

Y Afterschool Programs are committed to providing children with a fun, enriching, and safe environment, where we foster positive physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth.

Pre-registration required for all classes. Classes run for 5 weeks, March 10 - April 7.

Beginners Ballet (Ages 3 - 4) Our introductory ballet class, focusing on creative movement and ballet fundamentals. This level is designed for young children who are new to dance. We will use a fun combination of books, floor exercises, games, and barre work to introduce children to the exciting world of ballet. Held at the Y Annex.

Afterschool Enrichment Programs

Ballet II (Ages 4 - 6)

Ballet II builds on skills developed through several sessions of Beginner Ballet, delving deeper into proper technique and more sophisticated steps.

The Y will provide military families with a FREE family gym and family swim experience on Saturday, April 14! Families can enjoy gym time from 11:30am to 1:30pm and swimming from 12:00 to 2:00pm. All they have to do is check in at member services and show their military ID!

This level is appropriate for 5-6 year olds who have not taken a dance class before, or for younger children who have already had the opportunity to learn ballet basics. Held at the Y Annex. Saturdays (Starts March 10) $35 Members / $50 Non-Members

Ballet III (Ages 5 - 7)

Designed for children who have taken ballet in the past, and have mastered the basic steps and movements. We will work to build on previous experience for a more technically challenging class, while maintaining a fun and positive learning environment. The Y offers imaginative themed camps during school breaks. February and April Vacation Camps are right around the corner and we still have some openings! The communities participating during some or all of these breaks include Barre, Burlington, Essex, Ferrisburgh, Georgia, Jericho, Underhill, and Waterbury.

Our experienced swim instructors teach the nationally recognized Y Progressive Swim Program, with a focus on personal safety, stroke development, and rescue techniques. This program promotes personal growth for your swimmer in a fun, caring, and safe atmosphere.

This 7 week session runs Tuesday, March 6 - Saturday, April 21. Registration is open NOW and pre-registration by level is required. To schedule a swim evaluation to ensure your child starts at the appropriate level, contact Jess Lukas, Aquatics Director, at 652-8143 or

FIRST PLUNGE (Ages 6 mos. to 5 yrs.) These 30 minute introductory classes use the bond between caregiver and child to create a safe and welcoming environment. Classes focus on comfort, balance and movement and are designed to allow the children to have fun in the water while caregivers guide them through skills such as bubble blowing, kicking, paddling and jumping. One adult must accompany each child in the water. Children that are not potty trained must wear a proper swim diaper. There is no swim lesson evaluation required; please register by age.

Shrimp / Kipper / Inia (Ages 6 - 18 mos.)

For children from 6 to 18 months, this class introduces parents and their infants to the pool and allows beginning swimmers to progress from water adjustment to basic skills. Instruction helps parents work with their children and focuses upon on creating a fun time for parents and children through water games, songs and basic movements. Perch (Ages 19 - 36 months)

This class continues to provide the highest quality of early water experiences for children from 19 months to 36 months. Children will work towards swimming independently with support from both the instructor and their caregiver while continuing to develop safety skills and early swimming skills through games, song and playful instruction. Perch Plus (Ages 29 - 36 months)

For children from 29-36 months, Perch Plus is for children that have completed at least one session of Perch. Caregivers remain in the water with children as instructors work towards preparing children for Parent Pike or even Pike 1. This class is for our more advanced, younger swimmers who are demonstrating bubble blowing skills and swimming independently with flotation and limited caregiver support. Parent Pike (Ages 3 - 5)

This transitional class is for children who are not ready to be without an adult caregiver in the water and introduces skills to the child and adult together. By graduation day, the caregiver is out of the water and children are comfortable on their own.

GAINING CONFIDENCE (Ages 3 - 5) Our pre-school age swim lessons encourage comfort and independence through skills, games and fun. Children learn safe pool behavior and adjust to the aquatic environment with flotation aids. Parents are encouraged to be a support, but are not present in the water. Each class is 30 minutes long.

Pike 1 (Ages 3 - 5)

Children are introduced to their first experience swimming without a parent. Instructors work with children to teach independence and confidence in the water through basic swim skills and safety. Our school-age swim lessons are designed to encourage comfort and independence in the water through skill building, games and fun. The higherlevel classes offer an athletic fitness element. These lessons are 45 minutes long.

Polliwog (Ages 6 - 9)

Guppy (Ages 6 - 10)

Our guppies start to transition from the program pool into the lap pool. They begin rhythmic breathing, refine their backstroke, build endurance and learn safety skills all while having fun. Minnows work on refining strokes, building endurance and begin diving. Minnows should be able to complete 25 yards of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke. Flying Fish / Shark (Ages 9 - 16)

Flying fish and shark instructors continue working on stroke development and stamina building to work towards completing 100 yards of front crawl, backstroke, butterfly and breast stroke. A focus on water safety is maintained as flying fish and sharks are becoming young adults who might be thinking about jobs as swim instructors and lifeguards. SAFE & ACTIVE FUTURE (Ages 6 - 16)

Home School Swim

Are you a home school family? Time to take some swim lessons at the Y! We’ll join together for 45 minutes of a structured swim lesson program geared towards the home school children in our community. We are hoping that through some physical activity, together we can make some new connections for children and add some play into their day! Tuesdays 11:30 am – 12:15 pm $107 Members / $167 Non-Members

Adaptive Swim Lessons (All ages)

One-on-one 30-minute lessons for people of all ages with physical or developmental needs. An informational application must be completed prior to the start of your lessons. To inquire about lessons, please contact Jess Lukas, Aquatics Director, with any questions at or 652-8143. $30 per lesson.

Private and Semi-Private Swim Lessons (Groups of 2 – 5) Enjoy a one-on-one, personalized swim lesson with a qualified instructor no matter what your age! Your instructor will create lessons to specifically meet your needs and goals. Lessons are 30 minutes. INTRODUCTORY PROGRAMS The Stroke School for 5-8 year olds

The Stroke School is a intended for young swimmers

new to swim team who need significant development before moving to the competitive team. The program runs in 7 or 8 week sessions throughout the year. Stroke School teaches swimmers the physical skills/ strokes while also educating them on the aspects of being part of a competitive swimming team. Swimmers are expected to attend both sessions each week. February 26 - April 18 Monday & Wednesday 5:00-6:00 pm $112 Members / $164 Non-Members

The Dynamo Swim Team is structured to promote the development and success of our swimmers. Program placement is based on age and swimming ability, as well as emotional, social and physical development. We welcome swimmers with disabilities. Please contact the head coach with any questions. Practices for all levels below are held in the lap pool. Join us for some summer pre-season swimming to work on stroke technique and get back in shape to prepare for summer swim teams. All programs run April 2 - June 7, 2018.

APRIL VACATION SWIM CAMP Join Dynamo Swim Team this April vacation for a week-long, half-day swim camp. This camp is intended for swimmers ages 8-18 who have at least one season of competitive swimming experience. Each day we will spend an hour on dry land exercises and weight lifting safety education. We will spend 1 hour in class learning about nutrition, metabolism, hydrodynamics and propulsion theory, and how training changes the body. Time will also be devoted to analyzing race videos from the Olympics and World Championships to understand stroke mechanics. Finally, we will spend 2.5 hours in the pool working on stroke refinement. Each day we will use a submersible iPad and GoPro to take underwater film of swimmers strokes, turns and starts and then we will play back the videos immediately on an iPad to review modifications and refinements the swimmers need to make. Throughout the week we will continue to film swimmers as they progress through the changes needed for significant improvements to their strokes, turns and starts. This course gives participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and decide if advanced medical care is needed. Lifeguard Certification Course

(Ages 15 & up) Looking for a rewarding job? Train to be a lifeguard! Our comprehensive Lifeguard Training course includes accident prevention, lifeguarding techniques, emergency systems, and rescue skills. It also includes CPR for the professional Rescuer with AED and First Aid. Check our website for prerequisites. Lifeguard Recertification Course

Trained lifeguards are in high demand. Are all of your certifications up to date? Test your skills to assure keeping people safe in and around the water. Two day program. Only those with a current certification can enroll in this class. Those with an expired certification are expected to enroll in the full certification class per the American Red Cross. Babysitter’s Training Course

This course provides youth ages 11-15 who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly care for children and infants. Training will help participants develop leadership skills, learn how to develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe and help children behave, as well as learn about basic child care and basic first aid. Swim Stroke Refinement Using Underwater Video

During this 45-minute session in the lap pool, a coach will help you identify changes to improve your swim stroke(s) using a submersible iPad. Waterfront Diving Center basic Scuba Diving Course Waterfront Diving Center’s basic Scuba Diving Course will bring you places you never expected. Once you become a certified scuba diver, you are certified to dive anywhere in the world for life. So, come explore the shipwrecks of Lake Champlain to the coral reefs of the Caribbean with us. This course covers basic problem solving techniques and how to make scuba diving safe and fun! Classes are held at Waterfront Diving Center and students practice their skills in the YMCA pool. Waterfront Diving Center has been teaching scuba diving at the Greater Burlington YMCA since 1988.
