I recently had the privilege of being a part of a Vermont’s Women’s Fund and Change the Story VT planning committee that brought an impactful national speaker to Vermont – Ted Bunch, Co-Founder of A Call to Men. He delivered a message that resonates with me both as a father of three young men and in my role as a leader of a community organization with an opportunity to impact the lives of so many, particularly youth during their vitally important formative years. Ted Bunch’s message, and the goal of A Call to Men, is to, “Help create a world where all men and boys are loving and respectful and all women and girls are valued and safe.” The work to get to this world requires that we reexamine traditional ways in which boys and men are socialized with the end goal of “promoting healthy, respectful manhood.” The profile of this work has been raised over the past year and a half as women have raised their voices and propelled the #MeToo movement into the national consciousness. Violence against, assault aimed at, and the harassment of women are not just women’s issues, and the conversations such as those led by Ted Bunch help ensure that the spotlight remains on the role men must play if we are to create the change that is needed. Boys don’t simply become men in a vacuum. The influences on boys are numerous, but perhaps none as great as those closest to them—so I have work in this area that is very personal. It is incumbent upon me, as a father, through direct conversation and indirectly by modeling appropriate behavior, to guide my sons as they grow and mature. Just as is true in other aspects of their lives, “respectful manhood” must be taught, nurtured, and supported. The opportunity to be a part of this work extends beyond the personal for me, with each day presenting our Y with the chance to be that positive influence. Some opportunities are more direct: the early educator working in a Y preschool classroom; the cabin leader at Camp Abnaki who is a role model for campers; the swim coach who works daily with young athletes; the afterschool counselor’s influence during vitally important out-of-school hours, to name a few. Other opportunities arise in the course of our day-to-day work: how we mentor our young employees; how we respond to inappropriate remarks or conduct in our fitness center or pools; and many, many more. Here at the Y, we know that change is possible. While the YMCA has its roots as the Young Men’s Christian Association, we are stronger today because we serve men and women, and the fabric of our Y community is more united because of the richness of all faiths and beliefs held by our members and families. Central to the Y’s identity has been an ability to rise to the challenges of the community. There is no denying the role of men in bringing about the changes that need to occur to “Change the Story” on gender. Guided by our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, the Y has a unique opportunity to impact all youth in support of societies’ work to create that world where men and boys are loving and respectful and all women and girls are valued and safe.

The Y Early Childhood Programs provide quality program for children ages 0 to 5 years, fostering social, emotional, physical, cognitive, creative, and healthy development through enriching experiences and positive relationships. Our established programs are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and have received 5 STARs from the State of Vermont. Registration for Y preschool is ongoing. Time in the pool is a fun part of our preschool week here at the Pomerleau Family Y! We believe kids should learn safety around water at an early age, to help foster a lifetime love of water and swimming. Here in Vermont, we have plenty of lakes, rivers, and swimming holes to play in when the weather permits. Camp Koda

• Co-ed day camp for kids currently in grades K - 6 State licensed summer program located in Burlington, Essex*, Georgia, Underhill and Waterbury. Camp IGNITE — new this year for girls ages 8 to 14

Burlington-based, Camp IGNITE will Inspire Girls in Nature, Technology, and the Environment! In addition to the weekly themed activities, campers will practice stewardship and gain skills in STEM. Our experienced swim instructors teach the nationally-recognized Y Progressive Swim Program, with a focus on personal safety, stroke development, and rescue techniques. This program promotes personal growth for your swimmer in a fun, caring, and safe atmosphere.

Lessons begin on Tuesday, March 5 and run for 7 weeks. Registration is open NOW and pre-registration by level is required. To schedule a swim evaluation to ensure your child starts at the appropriate level, contact Jess Lukas, Aquatics Director, at 652-8143 or

FIRST PLUNGE (Ages 6 mos. to 5 yrs.) These 30 minute introductory classes use the bond between caregiver and child to create a safe and welcoming environment. Classes focus on comfort, balance and movement and are designed to allow the children to have fun in the water while caregivers guide them through skills such as bubble blowing, kicking, paddling and jumping. One adult must accompany each child in the water. Children that are not potty trained must wear a proper swim diaper. There is no swim lesson evaluation required; please register by age.

Shrimp / Kipper / Inia (Ages 6 - 18 mos.)

For children from 6 to 18 months, this class introduces parents and their infants to the pool and allows beginning swimmers to progress from water adjustment to basic skills. Instruction helps parents work with their children and focuses upon on creating a fun time for parents and children through water games, songs and basic movements. Perch (Ages 19 - 36 months)

This class continues to provide the highest quality of early water experiences for children from 19 months to 36 months. Children will work towards swimming independently with support from both the instructor and their caregiver while continuing to develop safety skills and early swimming skills through games, song and playful instruction. Perch Plus (Ages 29 - 36 months)

For children from 29-36 months, Perch Plus is for children that have completed at least one session of Perch. Caregivers remain in the water with children as instructors work towards preparing children for Parent Pike or even Pike 1. This class is for our more advanced, younger swimmers who are demonstrating bubble blowing skills and swimming independently with flotation and limited caregiver support. Parent Pike (Ages 3 - 5)

This transitional class is for children who are not ready to be without an adult caregiver in the water and introduces skills to the child and adult together. GAINING CONFIDENCE (Ages 3 - 5) Our pre-school age swim lessons encourage comfort and independence through skills, games and fun. Children learn safe pool behavior and adjust to the aquatic environment with flotation aids. Parents are encouraged to be a support, but are not present in the water. Each class is 30 minutes long.

Pike 1 (Ages 3 - 5)

Children are introduced to their first experience swimming without a parent. Instructors work with children to teach independence and confidence in the water through basic swim skills and safety. Flying Fish / Shark (Ages 9 - 16)

Flying fish and shark instructors continue working on stroke development and stamina building to work towards completing 100 yards of front crawl, backstroke, butterfly and breast stroke. A focus on water safety is maintained as flying fish and sharks are becoming young adults who might be thinking about jobs as swim instructors and lifeguards. NEW! Porpoise Club

Through providing intensive stroke development and various leadership opportunities, participants have the unique chance to improve their swimming while developing important Safety and Leadership skills along the way! Participants in Porpoise Club will learn more about aquatic safety, as well as become more confident and knowledgeable in their swimming.

Age Group practice is designed for swimmers ages 9-12 with at least 1 year of swim team experience.

INTRODUCTORY PROGRAMS The Stroke School for 5-8 year olds

The Stroke School is a intended for young swimmers new to swim team who need significant development before moving to the competitive team. The program runs in 7 or 8 week sessions throughout the year. Stroke School utilizes storytelling to teach swimmers the physical skills and components of the strokes while immersing them in a fun adventure-based learning experience. Swimmers are expected to attend both sessions each week.

Are you a home school family? Time to take some swim lessons at the Y! We’ll join together for 45 minutes of a structured swim lesson program geared towards the home school children in our community. We are hoping that through some physical activity, together we can make some new connections for children and add some play into their day! 7 weeks.

The Dynamo Swim Team is structured to promote the development and success of our swimmers. Program placement is based on age and swimming ability, as well as emotional, social and physical development. We welcome swimmers with disabilities. Please contact the head coach with any questions. Practices for all levels below are held in the lap pool.

Join us for some summer pre-season swimming to work on stroke technique and get back in shape to prepare for summer swim teams. All programs run April 1 - June 6, 2019.

Adaptive Swim Lessons (All ages)

Private and Semi-Private Swim Lessons (Groups of 2 – 5) Enjoy a one-on-one, personalized swim lesson with a qualified instructor no matter what your age! Your instructor will create lessons to specifically meet your needs and goals. Lessons are 30 minutes. The Dynamo Masters Swim Team is a great group of dedicated swimmers across a range of skill and experience levels. Our coaches provide a daily workout to challenge your strength and stamina along with lots of feedback about stroke technique. Some of our swimmers compete in meets around the region but competition is not required. All swimmers must be able to complete 300 yards of swimming before joining the program. We welcome swimmers with disabilities. Please contact the head coach with any questions. Swimming on the Spectrum

No goal is more important than to ensure that our Y is for everyone. We have once again partnered with Autism Speaks to provide six free swim lessons for children and adults who have an Autism diagnosis. Join Dynamo Swim Team this April vacation for a week-long, half-day swim camp. This camp is intended for swimmers ages 8-18 who have at least one season of competitive swimming experience.

1 Semi-Private session $32 Members / $48 Non-Member 3 Semi-Private sessions $80 Members / $136 Non-Members 6 Semi-Private sessions $150 Members / $257 Non-Members PLEASE NOTE: We require 24 hours notice should you have to cancel a scheduled lesson. Each day we will spend an hour on dry land exercises and weight lifting safety education. We will spend 1 hour in class learning about nutrition, metabolism, hydrodynamics and propulsion theory, and how training changes the body. Time will also be devoted to analyzing race videos from the Olympics and World Championships to understand stroke mechanics. Finally, we will spend 2.5 hours in the pool working on stroke refinement. Each day we will use a submersible iPad and GoPro to take underwater film of swimmers strokes, turns and starts and then we will play back the videos immediately on an iPad to review modifications and refinements the swimmers need to make. Throughout the week we will continue to film swimmers as they progress through the changes needed for significant improvements to their strokes, turns and starts. Get fit, strong and energized! Through the use of equipment and gentle dance exercises, our certified instructor will help increase your flexibility, improve posture and balance, and make everyday living easier with this safe and healthy workout. Floor exercises will be performed in most classes.

This class helps to increase your endurance, strength, and power which make up the core components of athletic performance. The perfect class to complement your active lifestyle.

G Cardio Step Together

A one-hour, results-driven cardio workout that uses the STEP as its primary training tool. Simple, athletic movements and an adjustable step height enables you to determine the intensity that’s right for you. Motivating, energetic music — come and have a blast!

G Circuit Training

Lose fat and gain strength! Each rotation of strength is coupled with a burst of cardio to keep you moving fast and focused. Strength exercises utilize dumbbells, barbells, exercise balls, and your own bodyweight.

G Core Focus Together

Core Focus Together is a 30-minute athletic and functional core workout that strengthens everything from your shoulders to your hips. You will be stronger, quicker, and faster in all you do. Core work can also reduce back pain and will give you great looking abs!

These moderately paced aerobic exercise and muscletoning classes will improve breathing, flexibility, balance and strength. Weights, cardio, and balance exercise are incorporated into these workout sessions. Chairs are often used to provide additional stability. Yoga for the body, mind, and spirit. Class includes Pranayama (science of breath), all asanas (postures), relaxation and meditation. Class is 1.5 hours.

Lifeguard Recertification Course

Trained lifeguards are in high demand. Are all of your certifications up to date? Test your skills to assure keeping people safe in and around the water. Two day program. Basic CPR and First Aid

Babysitter’s Training Course

This course provides youth ages 11-15 who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly care for children and infants. Training will help participants develop leadership skills, learn how to develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe and help children behave, as well as learn about basic child care and basic first aid. BOY SCOUTS SWIM BADGE TESTING At the Y, we facilitate the certification for the Boy Scout Aquanaut Badge. We provide a certified lifeguard and a swim instructor to teach Aquanaut requirements. Your group has reserved use of the pool for one hour, often allowing for additional swim time. $110 for group of up to 25 swimmers; additional fees may apply for more swimmers. Adult Aquatic Wellness

Swim Stroke Refinement Using Underwater Video

During this 45-minute session in the lap pool, a coach will help you identify changes to improve your swim stroke(s) using a submersible iPad. Underwater video will be taken and reviewed to provide immediate and detailed stroke feedback. After the lesson, the video will be emailed to you with voiced over feedback related to the lesson. Waterfront Diving Center basic Scuba Diving Course Your starting point to discovering the wonders of the underwater world! This certification is your passport to SCUBA diving, and to enjoying the thrills of weightlessness underwater; exploring the beauty of an underwater tropical paradise; or the sunken shipwrecks of the Vermont Underwater Historic Preserve. SCUBA DIVER certification enables you to buy or rent equipment, go on dive charters, or participate in any SCUBA activity. The minimum age for this class is 12 years. Cost is $550.00 and includes an Education Kit containing a textbook, companion CDs and DVDs, a workbook, log book, decompression tables, and the use of all scuba equipment throughout the class. The only items not included are mask, fins and snorkel. We do give our students 10% off these items if they need to be purchased. Dates: March 19 - April 11, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 -10:00 pm at Waterfront Diving Center and Pomerleau Family YMCA pool. This class finishes in time for the school break and students can do their four checkout dives on their vacation.
