FEELING GOOD IS WITHIN REACH Early Spring Program Guide

GREATER BURLINGTON YMCA Financial assistance is available for all programs

The Greater Burlington YMCA is a non-profit organization with a mission to build a strong community by involving youth, adults and families in programs and activities that develop spirit, mind and body.

POMERLEAU FAMILY Y

Dear Members and Community, Recently, we are seeing more business leaders and elected officials join parents and providers in a vitally important discussion about child care. We all want the best for Vermont’s children, but families face many challenges in realizing that goal. Perhaps no challenge is as great as the decisions parents must make about child care. As parents, we wish we would never have to leave our child’s side, but the reality is that 70% of children under six in Vermont have all available parents in the workforce. This simple, economic reality sets parents off on the pursuit – often all too difficult here in Vermont – to find child care. A 2016 study by Let’s Grow Kids, a Vermont early childhood advocacy group, determined that 79% of infants and toddlers likely to need care don’t have access to high-quality child care. Even more startling is that 47% of Vermont’s very youngest don’t have access to regulated care of any kind, let alone high quality. The Greater Burlington YMCA has long known just how important it is to support children and families with high quality care. With a forty-plus year history in the field, the Y is Vermont’s largest child care provider. Our established programs are 5-STAR rated and NAEYC accredited – the most-accepted indicators of a truly high quality program. Today, we are entrusted with the early care and education of over 230 infants, toddlers, and preschool children. We have early childhood programs at seven sites in five communities across two counties. Each passing year we learn more about just how crucial a child’s early years are to their development. As noted in the Let’s Grow Kids study, 700-1,000 new neural connections are formed every second during a child’s first few years. We must, therefore provide that burgeoning mind with the nurturing and stimulating environment needed to set a strong foundation for future development. As important as it is to support the social and emotional growth of a child during those first, critical years, there are other reasons that also make clear that access to reliable, high quality early care is an imperative for all of us. • It has the economic impact of attracting and building a strong workforce; enabling parents to get job training, seek employment, stay employed, and increase productivity. • It offers opportunities to connect families with other needed services such as early intervention, food programs, and a medical/dental home. • It provides structure and consistency for children with a challenging home life. This issue is foundational for the Y. With the support of generous Y donors, in recent years we have provided close to $250,000 annually in scholarships to families so that they can place their children in a Y early childhood program. You can trust that the Y will continue to advocate on behalf of Vermont’s youngest and stand with parents to make high quality care more accessible and affordable.

but competition is not required. All swimmers must be able to complete 300 yards of swimming before joining the program.

The Dynamo Masters Swim Team is a great group of dedicated swimmers across a range of skill and experience levels. Our coaches provide a daily workout to challenge your strength and stamina along with lots of feedback about stroke technique. Some of our swimmers compete in meets around the region

APRIL VACATION SWIM CAMP Join Dynamo Swim Team this April vacation for a week-long, half-day swim camp. This camp is intended for swimmers ages 8-18 who have at least one season of competitive swimming experience. Each day we will spend an hour on dry land exercises and weight lifting safety education. We will spend 1.5 hours in class learning about nutrition, metabolism, hydrodynamics and propulsion theory, and how training changes the body. Time will also be devoted to analyzing race videos from the Olympics and World Championships to understand stroke mechanics.

Trained lifeguards are in high demand. Are all of your certifications up to date? Test your skills to assure keeping people safe in and around the water. Two Day Program. Only those with a current certification can enroll in this class. Those with an expired certification are expected to enroll in the full certification class per the American Red Cross. Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30 12:00 - 6:00 pm each day $150 Member / $250 Non-Member

American Red Cross CPR PRO & First Aid Certification Course

Learn how to recognize and handle emergency situations, administer first aid, help someone with breathing and cardiac emergencies, and how to perform CPR on adults, childrean and infants as well as AED use and 2 rescuer CPR. American Red Cross Basic CPR and First Aid

Finally, we will spend 2.5 hours in the pool working on stroke refinement. On the first day of camp, we will use our underwater tablet to film each swimmer doing a 50 of every stroke. We will do a detailed stroke analysis of each swimmer’s videos and then send a link out the night before each day so swimmers can watch their stroke videos online and see/hear the analysis. Then they will use this feedback during each pool session to make modifications to their strokes. We will focus on one stroke per day Tuesday-Friday.

This course teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and decide if advanced medical care is needed. You will receive your First Aid Adult, Chilld and Infant CPR and AED certifications.
