Early Fall Program Guide

September 4 - October 29, 2017 Registration Open NOW GREATER BURLINGTON YMCA Financial assistance is available for all programs

The Greater Burlington YMCA is a non-profit organization with a mission to build a strong community by involving youth, adults and families in programs and activities that develop spirit, mind and body.

POMERLEAU FAMILY Y

Dear Members and Community, Even if you don’t have children, you have probably been hearing more and more about child care lately. There is a good reason for this. As we know here on the front lines at the Y, families are struggling. We feel strongly that one way in which we can model our Y core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, is through our commitment to children and families. Last year, roughly 500 of the 2,000 children the Y served through our licensed early child care and school age programs received support through Vermont’s Child Care Financial Assistance Program. With help from our donors, the Y also provides significant scholarship assistance—$250,000 in each of the past two years—to ensure families can access Y early child care.

All families deserve the opportunity to choose child care based on quality, and not on price. Likewise, child care providers should not be forced to use ability to pay as a criterion for enrollment in their programs. Unfortunately, the current level of State support falls short of what is needed to ensure access to high quality child care is available for those who need it most. The research on the benefits of high quality care is powerful. Reliable, high quality child care maximizes social and emotional growth; it helps parents get job training, seek employment, and stay employed; it connects families with other services; and it provides structure and consistency to children whose family situation is in flux. State support in this area remains relatively stagnant, creating greater challenges for child care providers. Financial pressures are causing providers to leave. For those staying in the field, they are limiting the number of children they accept who are recipients of state subsidy because it is simply too expensive to cover the “co-pay” for children receiving state tuition assistance. While finding additional state resources is a daunting task, it is essential we make this investment now. The impact quality care has on a child’s life is clear, considerable, and continuing. The failure to do so doesn’t just effect that child now, but throughout their life. As identified by Vermont’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Financing High-Quality, Affordable Care, each dollar invested in high quality care not only helps a child today, but yields savings in the range of $4 to $9 in potential future expenditures in the area of special education, social services, and more. Because this issue is simply too important to our collective future, the Y will continue to work with the Permanent Fund for Vermont’s Children, Let’s Grow Kids, the Vermont Early Childhood Alliance, and others to advocate on behalf of kids.

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve — and that the values and skills they learn are vital building blocks for quality of life.

FOR HEALTHY LIVING

We’re passionate about improving our community’s health and well being by providing the resources and guidance to help maintain or improve physical fitness; address individual health issues such as childhood obesity and diabetes; and achieve true balance among body, mind and spirit.

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Communities are at their best when people work together for the common good. Here at the Y, our volunteers, donors, members, partners and friends share a common goal — to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has an opportunity to give back and support their neighbors.
