POMERLEAU FAMILY Y 266 College St | 862-9622 (YMCA)

HOURS Monday – Thursday: 5am -10pm Friday: 5am - 9pm Saturday: 6am - 8pm Sunday: 7am - 5pm

Dear Members and Community, It is a busy time of year at the Y — but then, when isn’t it? Camps are winding down as our afterschool programs prepare to get started; swim team transitions from our summer to school-year program; a new group of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers get set to join our early childhood programs; and I could go on. While the old adage is that change is the only constant, for me, another constant is just how often I am astonished by the heart, dedication, compassion, and skill that our young Y staff bring to their work. Often lead by professionals who themselves are only in their 20’s and 30’s, we have staff, some still in their teens, who step up in ways well beyond their years. Take our lifeguards. This group of young women and men, most of whom are in high school and college, have stepped forward and said, “yes, I will be responsible for saving another person’s life.” It blows me away. This summer, for one 17 year old Y guard, this wasn’t just theoretical. On Lake Champlain, in more than 40 feet of water, he saved the life of a drowning friend — a friend with four inches and forty pounds on this young man. Seizing upon a fresh lease on life, the friend later asked our young Y employee to teach him how to swim — really swim. And, they did it at our Y.

POOL SCHEDULE Monday – Thursday: 5:30am - 9:45pm Friday: 5:30am - 8:45pm Saturday: 6:30am - 7:45pm Sunday: 7:30am - 4:45pm

Y school age staff keep kids physically active, help prevent the summer learning slide, and engage kids in rewarding out-of-school activities. Our early childhood staff is at the front lines of fostering growth in young children at the most critical stage of their development. They are role models, they console, and they often are called up to assume the role of counselor. A child may be in crisis, but time and time again I see a much younger Y staff member respond with composure, empathy, and heart. I am a fifty-something year old father of three, but have no doubt that these amazing young women and men have provided me with many teachable moments. They also consistently demonstrate a humanity that makes me incredibly proud to call them my colleagues.

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

It isn’t only in crisis that Y staff step up. Our swim team coaching staff, some barely out of youth swimming themselves, help all kids understand their potential and to see their worth. Each young swimmer is valued and some, with this support, dedicate themselves to excel. One young woman, who has represented our Y at national meets for two years running, set two state records this summer. Just this past week, another swim team member swam across Lake Champlain. Yes, you read that correctly.

FOR HEALTHY LIVING

There are occasions in past letters where I have shared statistics. They have their place, but clearly they do not tell the whole story. The part of the story that gives me the greatest pride to call the Y home is the heart and soul that is poured into our work each day. We are fortunate to have so many young professionals committing themselves to this work, to our Y, and to this community.

We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve — and that the values and skills they learn are vital building blocks for quality of life. We’re passionate about improving our community’s health and well being by providing the resources and guidance to help maintain or improve physical fitness; address individual health issues such as childhood obesity and diabetes; and achieve true balance among body, mind and spirit.

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Communities are at their best when people work together for the common good. SAFE SWIMMERS START HERE
