A FUREVER FRIEND FOR THE HOLIDAYS As you make your holiday list for the season, it may surprise you to learn that 2 out of 10 families have stopped exchanging material items at Christmas. A trend has started to return our focus to the holidays’ original purpose – hope, family, service, and love. Do your friends, family, or clients really want to receive another item that adds to the clutter of their home? Do you?
Bilbo is a 7-week old puppy who was abandoned and tethered to a milk crate. He found his furever home and is now happy and healthy and providing unconditional love to a family.
Imagine receiving a card that you have just saved an abused and neglected puppy or helped reunite a scared cat with its owner. What if you learned you now own a share of a shelter kennel that ensures life-saving adoption space at GBHS? Or you own a surgical table that provides critical training for 4th year Auburn and Tuskegee veterinary students and lifesaving surgeries for GBHS pets? Those are gifts worth giving!
For 133 years your donations have been critical to keeping our doors open to provide a safe haven for abandoned animals. We thank you so very much for everything you have done to support the Greater Birmingham Humane Society. Please remember our shelter animals and help us this holiday season. May your holidays be filled with love and the joyful sounds of pets, children, family and friends. Allison Black Cornelius Chief Executive Officer GBHS
It’s time to get back to the true meaning of the holidays. People are tired of things. They want purpose. They are hungry for change. The items in this gift catalog represent what the holiday season is all about – hope, love, and faith. Join us in giving life. Here’s how it works: • You donate the rescue of a puppy in honor of your child’s teacher, Ms. Mary, who loves animals. • Ms. Mary receives a beautiful photograph and holiday card from you describing her gift and the generous contribution you made in her honor. • Because of your gift a dog or cat is adopted, a vet student trained, or a dog saved through a life-saving surgery after being hit by a car. • Depending on the sponsorship selected, Ms. Mary’s name is posted in the shelter for guests, adopters, and school children to see. This passes the spirit of giving on to others. You can even bring your children in to see their sponsored animal! • More than anything else, your gift represents a family that is completed when they find their forever companion. A companion that will see them through hard times, lonely times, and laughter. A companion that will create lifelong memories.
YOUR GIFT IS A CYCLE OF LIFE. 3
About the Greater Birmingham Humane Society The Greater Birmingham Humane Society, founded in 1883, is the largest and oldest humane society in Alabama. Over the course of our history we have witnessed the changes in our community and yet have never left the original mission of Dr. Phillips “to promote the humane treatment of people and animals through education, advocacy and services.” In the past two years, donors have enabled and empowered us to experience amazing growth and impact. In 2016 adoptions doubled, out-of-state transports tripled, more than 300 animals are in foster homes, and unnecessary euthanasia is less than 5% of the 20,000 animals we take in annually. Of the 80 fulltime staff we employ only five are administrative. We are considered one of the most successful and efficient animal shelters in the United States.

GIFT OF EMERGENCY
Kayla Wayler is a 4th year veterinary student at Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. The training and support she received during her 2-week externship at GBHS made a huge difference in her life and that of an abandoned puppy.
The gift of a veterinary student’s surgical table at GBHS’ Shelter Medicine Hospital provides two students’ housing, surgical supplies, and teaching supervision.
“One day I learned about Little Bit, a 3-month old puppy that had a problem with her eye. I knew that I wanted to be the one to help her. You see, during my first year in vet school, I fell in love with eyes and have been passionate about pursuing a career in veterinary ophthalmology ever since,” recalls Kayla.
One student can perform 100 spay/ neuter surgeries, and life-saving treatments for hundreds of shelter animals.
Dr. Susan Nelms, a local veterinary ophthalmologist, helped GBHS diagnose Little Bit who could no longer see out of her affected eye due to a condition of high pressure in the eye called glaucoma. Glaucoma can cause significant pain and discomfort and the best option was to remove her eye. Dr. Nelms reached out to Kayla and generously offered her facilities, time, and guidance to help Kayla perform Little Bit’s surgery. Afterwards while taking the puppy back to the shelter, Kayla fell in love with Little Bit.
Surgery Table: $1,500 Share of a Table: $100
Shelter extern students ensure that all animals adopted out by GBHS have received state-of-the-art veterinary care while in our shelter. Adopters say this is very important in their decision to adopt rather than purchase animals. CALL: 205-942-1211 www.ghbs.org/givehope
Kayla says the experience at GBHS not only helped her surgical skills, but also changed her perspective on the issues animal shelters face. Thanks to the gift of a donor, Little Bit has a loving, new home and Kayla has improved her veterinary skills.

PLUM PUDDING, POPCORN STRINGS, AND PUPPIES! Do you have friends or children that are constantly watching puppy videos online or who speak in baby-talk anytime they see a small, furry puppy? Thank your child’s teacher for helping your own little one with her daily lessons. Then share your caring heart with the baby animal lovers in your life. The gift of rescuing a homeless, abused, or neglected puppy is a meaningful way for you to give a little boy or girl, or even an adult, a message of hope and compassion. It is the little animals you save at GBHS that cost the most. That’s because they require special vaccinations given more often to protect them from Parvo and other diseases that their small bodies have not developed antibodies to fight off. We also use fresh gowns and gloves any time we touch a puppy for the same reason. Our caring puppy staff spends hours cleaning the puppy room every day to keep it sanitized. And, puppies taken into adoption rooms require a freshly laundered pillowcase every time they are viewed. Our staff has to steam clean every room between viewings to also stop Parvo from spreading and killing our babies.

But our donors are dedicated to providing the best possible care for our most fragile furry friends! Pick a “present” and we will send the recipient a picture of the puppy with the item and a brief explanation of how the present is helping to save a puppy’s life. The card shares the lesson of compassion and kindness and can teach young ones about responsible pet ownership.
GIFT OF PUPPY PRESENTS: Gift of Puppy’s Health and Safety: $100
Health and Safety Package includes cost of sterilized pillow cases and blankets, daily sterilized bowls for water and food, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, and puppy food for one puppy.

Puppy Crates are used daily while cleaning kennels, and once when transporting puppies to and from their spay/neuter surgery. Crates must be sterilized between each puppy’s use. We will put your name on the crate and send you or your recipient a photograph!
Gift of Play Package: $25
Socialization and Training Package includes wear-tough puppy enrichment toys, play-time in sterilized room, and puppy-safe treats. (Toys must be sterilized and replaced every day the puppy is in the shelter; each puppy uses a different toy every day.)
CANDY CANES, CAROLING, AND KITTENS! If you are looking for that purrrfect gift that will cause a huge smile and a loud squeal then give your friends, family, child’s teacher, or child their very own sponsorship of a playful, precious kitten! Kittens make everyone laugh. Everything and everyone is a plaything and kittens are famous for pawing the air and sudden jumps back and forth as they try to “catch” mysterious moving critters. The gift of rescuing a homeless, abused, or neglected kitten is just the right thing for a little girl or special person in your life. If your child’s teacher is a cat person, imagine her delight when she learns she has saved a local shelter kitten. All small animals at GBHS require more time, more medicines, and more care than our adult animals. Every day, each kitten’s kennel and litter box is cleaned, food and water bowls sterilized and replaced, and toys are sterilized and replaced. Kittens are also socialized several times a day especially if they show signs of being feral. We also save hundreds of abandoned and unweaned kittens and these kittens are bottlefed every two hours until they can survive on their own!

We will send the lucky person a picture of the kitten (or kittens) with the item and a brief explanation of how the item is helping to save a kitten’s life. The card shares the lesson of compassion and kindness and can teach young ones about responsible pet ownership.

DECK THE HALLS WITH DOGS! Do you know someone who delights in dogs? Then how about the gift of an adult shelter dog’s life to make your gift the most AMAZING one under the tree?! GBHS rescues more than 18,000 animals each year – that’s 70 abandoned animals coming into the shelter every single day. But your support enables us to vaccinate, provide flea and tick medications, and assess all dogs upon intake. The cost of providing this kind of care is astronomical but it ensures the health of not only our whole herd but the health of the staff and the general public. Your gift of one adult shelter dog’s rescue provides medical care as well as daily vet checks, spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccination, food, water, and enrichment toys. Additionally, we take adoptable animals to many community events and retailers. We also photograph and promote each animal in order to attract a potential adopter. All adopters are screened and agree to follow-up checkins. Finally, if an adopter has problems with their pet, GBHS has a behaviorist on staff to answer questions and to provide support.

Give her the gift she’s not expecting – her very own sponsorship of an adult shelter cat. GBHS cats live in many different spaces at the shelter. Some live in colonies while others live in their very own Cat Condo! Many of our cats prefer the privacy of a kennel. Whatever their space, every cat is special at GBHS. Adult cats do have one thing in common – they love to be petted and they are very social. Your gift of an adult shelter cat’s rescue provides daily sterilized towels, socialization, kennel cleaning, and fresh litter, food, and water. They also receive sterilized cat toys. Your gift also spays/neuters one cat and funds our ability to photograph and promote each animal in order to attract a potential adopter. All adopters are screened and agree to follow-up checkins. STUFF A STUDENT IN THEIR STOCKING! Help a vet student to serve as they learn. “It changed my life. I never knew animal overpopulation was this bad. I can’t believe what people do to these innocent animals – how can I help? The experience I gained during this externship will serve me the rest of my life. I came in a student, I left a vet.” These are only a few of the words shared with us by various Auburn veterinary students. GBHS started the shelter medicine externship program in 2015. One year later it is the #1 requested externship at Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Vet students were graduating from Auburn with as few as two independent surgical experiences. Our program ensures each student his/her own surgical table for two weeks. Students are supervised and taught by a full-time Auburn professor and a shelter veterinarian who together help improve the student’s surgical and diagnosis techniques. Students may perform as many as 10 spay/neuters a day giving them valuable skills and confidence. Additionally, they are exposed to diverse health issues not usually seen in private practice. This further improves their abilities as a future veterinarian. Housing is also provided since many students are from out-of-state.
GIFT OF STUDENT SPONSORSHIP: Gift of sponsorship of one student surgical table: $1,500 Gift of share of a table: $100 Gift of sponsorship of one student’s housing: $300 Gift of sponsorship of one emergency response: $200 (includes x-rays, tests, surgery, meds, and recovery) Gift of one spay/neuter for a shelter pet: $50 Gift of one shelter animal’s vaccinations: $25 A holiday card and photo of student and/or animal will be sent to your recipient.
Your gift of sponsorship of the Shelter Medicine Program is critical to our animals’ access to high quality veterinary care. This program increases spay/ neuters and directly saves animals’ lives. 14
LIGHT A LIFE AND IGNITE CHANGE BY SPONSORING A GBHS OUTREACH PROGRAM. Help people keep their pets in their own homes. Support neighbors trying to help abused or abandoned animals. Of the 18,000 animals we rescue every year, owners surrender 7,500. But together, we can stop the surrender pipeline. Most people surrendering their pets are facing financial crisis, restrictions on their pets, or an inability to pay for their pet’s illness. Every day we get calls from people who see animals in distress. They may be tethered or out in the elements with no shelter, food, or water. They may be used for fighting or being abused. Whatever the call, our staff answers 24/7 with an almost 100% success rate of getting the animal surrendered or changing the owner’s attitude. Your sponsorship of a needle-moving project can save thousands of animals!
Gift sponsorship of one abused animal’s care: $500 Gift a share of an abused animal’s care: $50
Abused animals are held by GBHS for law enforcement until a judge renders a verdict. These animals may stay with us up to 9 months and require enormous care and socialization. GBHS tries to get these animals released to us quickly so that we can find them new homes.
Gift a share of Pets for Life: $25
Birmingham is the 31st city to get a Pets for Life grant. Our staff go door-to-door in Birmingham’s poorest communities providing non-judgmental responses to animal’s needs. We provide free flea/tick treatment, rabies vaccinations, spay/neuters, disease treatment, shelters, and food to seniors and the poor.
Gift a share of the “No More Bullying” Program: $25
Volunteers go into local schools and along with our shelter pets teach compassion, responsible pet ownership, kindness, and an anti-bullying message.
Gift a share of GBHS’ Pet Pantry program: $25
The Pet Pantry provides food, toys, treats, medicine, and other pet supplies to HIV homebound patients, low-income seniors, and low-income families.
Gift a share of Hauling Paws Program – GBHS’ Out-Of-State Transport: $25
Hauling Paws transports adoptable animals from Birmingham to northern states that have stronger spay/neuter laws. These states often do not have enough adoptable animals to meet the demand of the public. This year we saved thousands of dogs by transporting about 20-30 dogs per week.
