NO ONE ELSE IS EXACTLY LIKE YOU.

Why not a college degree program that’s unique, too? That’s what you can get at the School for New Learning (SNL), DePaul University’s nationally recognized college for adult learners. At SNL, everything that’s special about you—your experiences, work, skills, interests, knowledge and ambitions—shapes your education. You can get credit for what you know and what you’ve done; you decide where you’re going and how you’ll get there. DePaul lets you design a curriculum that’s uniquely yours, one that links your past to your future. Working at your own pace and with your faculty mentor and professional advisor, you determine your learning goals and then complete your degree by taking SNL courses, earning credit for your work and life experiences, or taking proficiency exams. You even decide when and how to take classes: on campus, online or both. What could be better?

YOU’RE ONE OF A KIND. Let your extraordinary qualities shine at DePaul.

School for New Learning:

EMPOWERING ADULTS FOR PRACTICAL SUCCESS AND LIFELONG LEARNING. An education that’s self-directed—the School for New Learning lets you combine the practical and the imaginative to satisfy your goals and dreams. Maybe you want a degree that advances your career, one that finishes what you started in the past, or one that puts you on a new path. We believe that learning and life are inseparable. You’ll learn art from artists, banking from bankers, science from scientists, management from managers, and leadership from leaders. SNL’s 700 undergraduate classes are taught by 211 full- and part-time faculty.

SNL offers four undergraduate degree options. To graduate, you must demonstrate 50 “competences”—the knowledge and skills of an adult educated in the liberal arts. SNL’s highly interactive classes meet once a week for 11 weeks at your choice of four locations in Chicago or the suburbs. Our undergraduate program also is online. Among 2005 SNL graduates, 95 percent were employed or in graduate school within six months of graduation. Of those who were employed, 26 percent were in better jobs with their same employer and 30 percent had new jobs with new employers. The average age of an SNL student is 39.

BECOME THE ONE WHO STANDS OUT IN A CROWD. The power to become your best – our graduates know the difference that makes.

“I came for a degree and found my life. Developing my learning plan for my SNL program was a process of self-discovery. Tailoring new learning into my unique set of experiences gave me clarity and direction. I have never looked for work. It has always found me. Having a degree from DePaul, and having broad experiences in church ministry, my curriculum vitae has been attractive to potential employers and clients.” Andrew Lyke, B.A. Coordinator of Marriage Ministry, Archdiocese of Chicago, Co-founder and Director, Lyke to Lyke Consultants

"Although I was 1,200 miles from Chicago I always felt a part of the DePaul community. My academic committee advised me throughout the program and we still remain close today." Kevin Adams, B.A., MBA Founder of Metrics Partners

The School for New Learning has the degree program you’ve been looking for. And, DePaul has the qualities you want in a university—the qualities that make DePaul the choice of more than 1,900 adult undergraduate students each year.

A DEGREE PROGRAM LIKE NO OTHER. From a university that’s well-known and respected.

FLEXIBILITY AND CONVENIENCE SNL shares DePaul’s commitment to accessible education. Classes are offered on weekday evenings, Saturdays and some Sundays at DePaul’s Loop, Naperville, O’Hare (Des Plaines) and Oak Forest campuses, as well as online, at a time convenient for you. Most of our students attend part time and earn a degree in three to four years.

PERSONAL ENRICHMENT AND PRACTICAL VALUE The reason people choose SNL is to get more out of life—more success in the workplace; a deeper understanding of purpose; a greater competence in a skill or a field of knowledge; and a firmer grasp of the things that matter. SNL reflects a fundamental DePaul principle: education is a force for growth—personal, social, professional and cultural.

INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION AND SUPPORT Our programs take into account your interests, while our teachers reject the old “we talk, you listen” style in favor of interactive, engaging dialogue with SNL students. We provide you with a resident faculty mentor and help you select a professional advisor (someone practicing in your field of interest). Working with your “SNL academic committee,” you’ll design a customized curriculum that will deliver the degree you want, as efficiently as possible.

CONNECTIONS AND NETWORKS More than 125,000 DePaul alumni, in dozens of professions, work and live in Chicago and around the world. The people you’ll meet through SNL—colleagues, peers, friends, teachers and mentors—can move your career forward and enrich your life.

PROGRAMS The following pages give an overview of DePaul’s School for New Learning undergraduate programs.

SNL UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS

CUSTOMIZED BACHELOR OF ARTS (OFFERED ON CAMPUS AND ONLINE) This degree program allows you to customize your own curriculum to fit your interests and goals. Your program can be a combination of credit for coursework, as well as work and life experience. The program is offered on campus and online—giving you the flexibility to fit your education into your life. SNL’s customized bachelor of arts program is organized around the lifelong learning, liberal learning and the individualized focus areas. LIFELONG LEARNING AREA

LIBERAL LEARNING AREA

Essential skills that make learning (no matter where it takes place) more satisfying and productive. In this area you will learn to:

You’ll acquire traditional knowledge and skills in the liberal arts, including:

Write clearly and fluently

Think critically in analyzing issues and solving problems

Improve your quantitative reasoning

Work collaboratively

Develop an experiential project

Arts and Ideas Here, you might choose “Interpreting the Arts” to relate your own experience to the work of artists, writers and other thinkers. Or “Creative Expression” to develop your own original activities and reflections within the creative process. Or “Reflective Expression” to explore fundamental questions about the meaning, purpose and values of your life.

Hone your research skills The Human Community Within topics about people and their cultures, you might elect “Communities and Societies” to learn about helping individuals thrive in an increasingly interdependent world. Or “Institutions and Organizations” to gain an understanding of effective interaction with institutions and organizations. Or “Individual Development” to focus on personal growth and effective interpersonal interaction. The Scientific World In this subject area, you’ll learn about technological and natural phenomena. Interest areas include “Experiencing Science,” where students engage directly in scientific investigation; “Patterns and Processes,” which encourages students to observe the natural world in order to identify observable patterns within it and their underlying causes; and “Science, Technology and Society,” where students explain the relationship between society, values and science or technology.

INDIVIDUALIZED FOCUS AREA You can design your undergraduate degree around your educational, professional and personal goals. Working with your academic committee, you create a course of study that reflects your exact interests and objectives. Below are some examples of SNL focus areas, described by the students who developed them: Project Management and Teamwork To enhance my career, I designed a program centered on the project management process; the courses improved my skills in team leadership, time and budget management, and client satisfaction. Effective Communication Because of my interest in how humans interact, I designed my focus area around developing skills in writing and public speaking, as well as in understanding how styles of communication impact, and are impacted by, culture. Competitive Advantage in Banking Today’s financial services organization has to differentiate its value to potential customers. I wanted to develop the skills, abilities and knowledge that would help my employer aggressively and successfully gain a greater market share. International Relations and the Military My professional goal is to be a career officer in the United States Armed Forces and eventually serve our government in international relations. My focus area was designed to be a well-rounded foundation for the achievement of these goals.

Business Economics of Information Technology I wanted to acquire the knowledge and skills of a 21st century, technology-savvy business leader. In SNL, I gained an understanding of the role of IT in the corporate world and I improved my IT-specific management skills. Enhancing Social Justice in Central and South America I wanted to work with non-governmental organizations to improve living conditions in this area of the world after traveling to El Salvador as part of an SNL course. Human Resources and the Law My purpose was to gain a better understanding of the key functional areas within human resources, including their legal ramifications, as a foundation for law school. At the same time, my classes at SNL helped me do a better job as a human resources professional. Overseas Manufacturing and Business Organization The globalization of industry has made it necessary for me to understand international cultures and work attitudes; now, I manage my company’s overseas operations. Consumer Behavior and Business Ethics Since my field—marketing—influences consumer behavior, I wanted to develop psychosocial research exploring the relationships between business ethics and selling, especially in the retail industry.

BACHELOR OF ARTS WITH A FOCUS IN LEADERSHIP The B.A. degree with a focus area in leadership requires the same 50 competences but is more structured. SNL provides a variety of courses to choose from, which fulfill the required competences. In addition, courses are offered both on campus and online so you can choose where and when to learn. The program is designed to provide you with cutting-edge leadership skills, expose you to international and crosscultural contexts of leadership, and teach you about best practices and ethical guidelines. In addition to mastering leadership, you will strengthen your liberal learning skills and improve your critical, creative and systemic thinking.

BACHELOR OF ARTS IN COMPUTING The B.A. in computing is offered jointly by DePaul’s School for New Learning (SNL) and School of Computer Science, Telecommunications and Information Systems (CTI). Instituted in 1996, this degree prepares you for computerrelated professions or graduate school in computer science. This program focuses on the relationship between hardware, software and information systems, and the organizational dynamics and human relations that occur in actual computing contexts. For those who have in-depth knowledge and background in computing, the B.A. in computing offers the opportunity to earn credit through documentation of that experience and projects completed in the workplace. For those who have little experience with computing, all requirements can be completed as coursework. In either case, the B.A. in computing offers you the flexibility and individualized learning approach of SNL while focusing on the latest technology, theory and content provided by CTI.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE COMPLETION IN NURSING The B.S. in nursing is a degree-completion program for registered nurses. This program emphasizes integrated learning in the liberal arts and sciences while serving as a foundation for upper division professional competences and knowledge in nursing science. The program offers greater flexibility for the adult learner to achieve learning outcomes, including online course options. The joint degree is similar to the SNL bachelor of arts in its philosophy, policy and procedures with the following exceptions:

The focus area consists of courses designed and offered by DePaul’s department of nursing. Courses prepare registered nurses for professional practice and leadership roles in health promotion and illness care; collaboration with others to meet present and future health needs of society; community service to vulnerable populations; and continuing academic and clinical education in nursing at the graduate level. The professional advisor in the student’s academic committee is a nursing faculty member assigned by the department. Laboratory components in biology and chemistry are required in The Scientific World subject area and will necessarily consist of transfer credit.

Students choosing the B.S. in nursing follow the same guidelines/procedures as other SNL students including:

Completing the Lifelong Learning Area and Liberal Learning Area competences. Being able to register and transfer coursework from other colleges including DePaul’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Documenting prior learning and developing independent learning pursuits that may include nursing and health science topics. Development of an advanced project in the focus area.
