CALL US ON 023 8045 4822 It’s a lovely sunny day, and we’re all going to the sea, Mum and Dad, our three small kids, my husband Jack, and me, Our little car is groaning, as it sets off down the road, Buckets, spades and swimsuits all weigh down our heavy load, My husband slams the brakes on, our car stops with shuddering jolt, The traffic is horrendous, and it’s all coming to a halt, I fiddle with the radio while Jack just sits and glowers, The traffic update tells us we’ll be stuck for several hours, Hi face gets really sulky; now it’s turned a crimson hue, As a cry comes from our eldest child “Mum, Hannah wants a poo,” I turn around to Hannah, I say “Darling wait right there,” Too late, a nasty niff takes hold, begins to fill the air, Hannah screams so loudly that we both begin to groan We’re stuck here on the motorway; just two miles from our home, Mum says “Turn the blower off, it’s messing up my hair,” And from the back there comes a chorus, “Daddy, are we nearly there?”

Forthcoming Tribute Shows At The Regent Centre, Christchurch Christchurch’s Regent Theatre has two “tribute” shows coming up in July, both of which will be well worth seeing. On July 22nd the theatre will present Desperado - The Heart Of The Eagles, featuring one of the best of the several Eagles’ tribute bands currently touring the country. How can those immortal words spoken by Glen Frey in 1994, “For the record we never broke up, we just took fourteen-year vacation” ever be forgotten? And when the band re-formed and embarked on their spellbinding ‘Hell Freezes Over’ tour that included both old favourites and brand new songs, it was as if they had never been away. Desperado make a welcome return this year performing their take on that very same show faithfully recreating the tour that was so successful it out-grossed any other rock tour in any year previously. They are a six-piece ensemble of accomplished musicians from around the UK. The sum of these parts creates a truly superb homage to the originals, such that you could just believe you are really standing on that street corner in Winslow Arizona, or on that dark desert highway. July 30th sees the presentation of

Dolly The Show 2011 – a tribute to the one and only Dolly Parton, award winning singer, composer, musician, actress and author. This glitzy two-hour show features a full cast of singers, the Dolly Mixture Dancers and superb musicians, all playing live to celebrate the career of the legendary lady. The show will be led by acclaimed country singer Jeanne Jordan, who was introduced to country music by the famous Gibb brothers, alias The Bee Gees. Whilst living in Los Angeles, she was present at many recording sessions, including the recording of Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers’ worldwide hit Islands in the Stream which was written and produced by the Gibbs. The show is packed with some of Dolly’s greatest hits, including 9 To 5, Coat of Many Colours, Here You Come Again, Islands in the Stream, I Will Always Love You, Jolene, and many more, all performed on a great stage set, injected with fun and more sparkles than Dolly’s Rhinestones! Ticket details and other information for both shows can be obtained by telephoning The Regent’s box office on 01202-499199 or by viewing

Diary of a Fitness Centre Monday – very exciting news for our members! We have bought a brand new cable machine for one of our gym rooms! As a team we would, I guess, be excited about new equipment, but this is a really effective piece of kit and will offer another option to help people become more flexible, mobile and stronger, contributing to their quality of life. It is a resistance machine which uses cables to move the weights up and down two pillars, making it really smooth to use – weights are in small increments so suit all abilities. Tuesday – Craig is dropping a line to our members offering them a free training session on the machine and Carol is advertising the imminent new arrival on the notice boards. Wednesday – The cable machine has arrived – it’s arrived packaged in lots of different size boxes and Ian and Craig are putting it together – this is a great investment for the centre and the members are going to really enjoy seeing the benefits it brings. Thursday – Sarah is putting out a poster advertising our summer classes for yoga and pilates – our classes usually run during term time, but they are so popular that people don’t want to break for the summer, so we are laying on some extra classes until the courses start properly again in the autumn. Friday – We’re starting to get some holiday postcards coming in! A number of our members have been getting some one to one training for various activity holidays – one member has trekked to Everest base camp, another is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and another member has just finished the British Coast to Coast walk – some two hundred miles! “Job done,” he wrote meaning the happy outcome of three months training here at the gym! Saturday and Sunday – It’s getting really busy now as members realise they still have time to get extra fit for their holidays! It’s great to see so many coming in for extra sessions keen to make the most of the next few months.

See you next month!

Look Cool by the Pool says Nicola Davis

The weather is warming up and the holiday season is upon us. If you didn’t quite get round toning up in the gym or manage to lose that extra half stone and the thought of stripping down to your swimming costume by the pool or on the beach fills you with dread, take heart; the right swimwear can make a real difference and give you the confidence you need. • Remember the basics. Straight bodylines look better in geometric designs whilst florals work best on curvy figures. It’s also important to remember the scale of the pattern. Many swimwear designers go over the top and use large scale patterns; whilst these might look fantastic on the peg, no matter what your body shape they’ll add pounds. • Show off your neck. A swimsuit with a square cut neckline will look best if you have a rectangular bodyline. If you’re lucky enough to have a curvy or hourglass figure then choose a costume with a rounded neckline. If you want to enhance your bust or are not sure of your body shape then choose a costume with a v-neck which will suit most. Discreet padding will flatter those with small busts. • Lovely Legs. If you want to give the impression of longer legs, choose a bikini or costume with a high cut leg. Just be careful though if you’re pear shaped as a high cut leg will draw attention to the fullest part of your thigh. Many designs this season have a straight cut leg which really only suits those lucky enough to have very long legs. • It’s all in the detail. Rectangles with little waist definition will look great in a one-piece suit with some hip or bust detail. If you want to go for a bikini then choose the skimpiest one you feel confident wearing. If you’re pear-shaped go for styles with detail above the waistline and a darker colour below; don’t be tempted to wear something with a skirt or frill as it will draw attention to your hips. It may be counter-intuitive, but a skimpier design is more flattering on a larger bottom so long as your flesh is relatively toned. Apple-shaped ladies can streamline their stomachs in a one-piece with “tummy control”. Halter neck styles are particularly good for ladies with broad shoulders and underwired versions suit those with heavier breasts. • It is worth spending a little extra on your swimwear if you’re large busted. There are some fantastic designs around that will provide you with the support you need. It’s worth remembering that on a two week beach holiday your swimwear becomes your underwear and needs to give you the same support. • And finally, if you feel uncomfortable walking around in just your swimwear then treat yourself to a brightly coloured beach kaftan or sarong; they’ll hide your wobbly bits and help you make the move from your room to sun lounger confidently. One golden rule before you bare all, make sure your skin is in tip top condition and that you always use high factor sun protection as nothing ages the skin quicker than exposure to the sun and red skin is not a good look on anyone.

Free Help for the Over 70s! Do you know anyone who would like help to make their home safe, warm and secure? We can provide support to help you improve, adapt and maintain your property. Due to its ongoing success, the Safe Warm and Secure pilot project, a partnership of Hampshire County Council, the Shaw Trust and Age Concern Hampshire, is being extended until Christmas 2011. We offer free guidance and support to home owners over 70 years of age if you want to improve, adapt or maintain your property to keep you safe, warm and secure. We work in Eastleigh, the New Forest and Test Valley areas. Since the project started in October 2010, we’ve helped 50 homeowners. Whilst you’re enjoying the sunshine, you may not want to think about getting your home ready for the winter. However, now’s a good time to make sure that everything is working so that any problems can be resolved in good time. We recommend to homeowners that they should get their boiler serviced now to ensure that these are able to heat your home when you need it the most. We can arrange for your boiler to be serviced and support you to apply for grants for central heating installation. Mrs J, aged 78, had her boiler serviced in June. On her behalf, we contacted traders listed in Hampshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service Directory and arranged for this work to take place. Mrs J commented that “you don’t know what problems you can come across. I feel happy and reassured that my boiler is now ready for the winter”. With regard to the support that she received from the safe, warm and secure team, Mrs J explained that “If I hadn’t met the Advisor, I would never have known about all the help that is available to myself and other home-owners. The Advisors have this knowledge and are bringing this to us”. We recognise that it is often daunting to have to make all

the arrangements on one’s own, especially if there are several organisations involved. We can therefore provide practical and emotional support to older home-owners until completion of the work. We aim to enable the older person to continue to live independently at home with a positive quality of life. We are unable to provide funding for any of the improvements but can help with identifying available grants and benefits. We can also help to source reputable contractors, arrange for quotations, and be there when the contractors visit. To get in touch with us and receive this free service, please phone 023 9273 3982 or e-mail

The Maskers Theatre Company present

Treasure Island

A new adaptation of the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson in the open air in the stunning gardens of Hamptworth Lodge, Landford SP5 2EA – Between Romsey and Salisbury Wednesday 20th – Saturday 30th July 2011, 7.30pm (no performance on Monday 25th July) Matinee performance – Sunday 24th July, 4.00pm

Directed by Rob Praine Adapted with savvy showmanship by Ken Ludwig, Treasure Island is a stunning yarn of piracy on the tropical seas. The Maskers will be putting a steam punk twist on the costumes and action. It all begins at an Inn on the Devonshire coast in 1775 and rapidly becomes an unforgettable and eccentric tale of treachery and mayhem. The decks are awash with legendary swashbucklers and brassy female pirates. The mainstay of it all is Jim Hawkins with his youthful thirst for adventure, and the infamous heroic villain Long John Silver. The unscrupulous buccaneering rogues with their greedy quest for gold, and Long John Silver’s fatherly affection for Jim, cannot help but win the hearts and souls of all ages who have longed for treasure and romantic adventure. Romsey’s New Village affinity with Romsey and I’ve wanted to have a show site in the town for some time,” he said. “This opportunity has come at exactly the right time in our development. I’ve known Vadnor’s owner, Ron McLean, for many years and in fact it was his outdoor display of fullybuilt conservatories that inspired the Conservatory Village concept. Giving customers the opportunity of examining our products under realistic conditions is one of the principal differences between us and most of our competitors.”

The Conservatory Village has arrived in Romsey. The company has taken over the long-established site formerly owned and operated by Vadnor Ltd at the Hillier Garden Centre in Botley Road. With flourishing sites at Cadnam and Three Legged Cross, this makes the third “village” to be run by the successful company. They also have a more conventional showroom in Dibden Purlieu. Managing Director Chris Lodge is delighted to have clinched the deal. “Having been based on the Abbey Park Industrial Estate for 15 years, we have a strong

Ron McLean is finally retiring, having run Vadnor for almost thirty years. “There are a number of other things I want to devote my time to,” he says. “I promised Chris first refusal on the business many years ago and called him as soon as I’d made my decision. I’m happy that he and his company will take the business forward.” The new Romsey Conservatory Village will be upgraded and remodelled over the next few months. Chris Lodge and his colleagues look forward to continuing their successful relationship with homeowners in the town.

Romsey Show

Saturday, 10th September, 2011 • 8am to 6pm • Broadlands Park, Romsey

A generous slice of country life served with lashings of fun things to do is the recipe for success at this year’s Romsey Show. The main ingredients for a great day out for all the family are action-packed show rings, lots of interesting rural pursuits and hundreds of horses, cattle and sheep that are looking their best for the judges. Some of the finishing touches include a new alpaca show, a revamped food area and a singing nun performing on a mobile piano! Things have certainly changed from the early 1800s when the Romsey Show started life as a Fatstock Show, held in the town’s Market Place and adjoining streets just before Christmas. The Romsey Agricultural Society was founded in 1842 for “the encouragement of the breeding of horses and livestock, good husbandry and skilled labour.” The society merged with the Romsey Horse Show Society in 1919, when the newly-formed Romsey Agricultural and Horse Show Society held its first event at Broadlands. The show has been held on the estate ever since and has grown to become one of the top one-day agricultural shows in the country, regularly attracting over 25,000 visitors, yet holding fast to its founding principle as a showcase for the best of British farming. On display are a huge variety of horses, donkeys, cattle and sheep. All are competing for the championship title and a place in the Grand Parade of prizewinners. Joining the line-up this year are alpacas, which are appearing at Romsey for the first time as part of the British Alpaca Society Short Fleece Show. There’s also a new champion of champions cattle event featuring the best of the best from agricultural shows throughout the summer and more non-affiliated horse classes designed to attract local competitors. Attractions in the Main Ring include the Blazing Saddles allgirl barrel racing team, the Solent Eagles junior motorcycle display team and the Derbyshire Midshipmen Carnival Band.

There will also be a new food show, called the Food Zone, featuring lots of fresh ideas and activities for children. Some of Hampshire’s top chefs will be appearing in the Aga Rangemaster Cookery Demonstration Theatre while the Traditional Bakers Show will explain how to make the perfect loaf. In the children’s tent, Min Raisman and her Fit2Cook team will be encouraging youngsters to create healthy snacks. Min is passionate about food education and, having produced BBC Radio 4’s award-winning Food Programme and organised the Food and Farming Awards, is keen to show young people the benefits of a good diet based on seasonal fruit and vegetables. And with over 80 traders displaying their wares in the Food Zone, there will be a huge array of produce to sample and purchase. The selection includes game, jams and chutneys, award-winning cheeses, pies, pastries and cakes, cider, beer and wine, fruit and vegetables. Romsey Art Group is among the many local societies exhibiting their work around the showground. They are aiming to be more family-friendly this year with members demonstrating their work alongside an all-day colouring activity in which children can create pictures for display outside the marquee. In addition, group members Alan Langford and Alan Olden will be painting a colour panorama on a family theme to a musical accompaniment. They plan to start at opposite ends and meet in the middle. Also aiming to hit the right note with families is Musical Ruth with her magical mobile piano. Having performed at countless venues to high acclaim, the singing nun will be making her debut at Romsey with her unique mix and mingle act. Just think Nuns on the Run and you’ll understand the humour! This year’s Romsey Show promises to be another great day out for all the family. It all happens on Saturday September 10th and there’s information on how to buy tickets at, with savings of up to thirty per cent on some advance sales.

Traditional countryside activities are highlighted with displays of falconry, gun dog training and the ever popular parade of hounds, while some of the more unusual animals on the showground include otters and water buffalo.

For a chance to win a Family Ticket to the Show simply answer the question Which year was the Romsey Agricultural Society founded?

Entries should be sent by post to – Romsey & Wellow Gazette, Unit 9, Greatbridge Business Park, Budds Lane, Romsey, Hampshire, SO51 0HA or e-mail to, to be received no later than 30th July. Winners will be notified by 14th August.

Hampshire Woman Embarks On Ambulance Ride Of A Lifetime For Charity Nikki Swulinska is taking on the greatest challenge of her life as she attempts to drive an ambulance from the green fields of England to the harsh deserts of Outer Mongolia with four of her closest friends. The amateur drivers will be taking on eleven hundred miles of roads and dirt tracks in aid of charities Cancer UK and the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation. They will be leaving on 23rd July with the aim of reaching Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, six weeks later. It’s Top Gear eat your heart out as the team departs with minimal driving experience and no mechanical knowledge. They will battle through all manner of weather, road type, navigational issues and mental challenges to reach their goal.

After passing through seventeen countries during their journey, on reaching their destination the team will donate their ambulance, along with emergency kit including a stretcher and wheelchair, to Mongolia’s national health service.

Leading up to the big departure the five are currently carrying out all manner of fund-raising efforts for the two charities, such as DJ nights, raffles, car boot sales and a rather less conventional live waxing sessions.

NikkI, 26, of Chilbolton, says, “We’re so excited to be taking on this massive challenge for Cancer UK and the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation. We’re all a little nervous about driving such a long way without much prior knowledge, but I’m sure together we shall pull through! Thank you so much to anyone who donates. We can’t wait to reach Ulaanbaatar, donate our ambulance and finally meet the community around whom we’ve been planning our trip all this time.” As well as traditional cash donations, the team needs equipment to help them through their journey such as mechanical tools, first aid supplies, camping utensils and gifts for the people they meet along the way. Produce Recipe Baked Stuffed Courgettes Courgettes are the sort of vegetable, in my opinion, that need a litte va va voom added to them to make them interesting. This recipe makes eight delicious courgettes, serve 1 or 2 per person. Ingredients 75gms of long grain rice 8 large courgettes, approx. 275gms each Olive oil 250gms of minced lamb 1 medium onion, finely diced 2 cloves of garlic, very finely diced or minced 4 sun-dried tomatoes (soaked in hot water for ½ hour if dried) ½ tsp of dried oregano ¼ tsp of dried rosemary Large pinch of cinnamon 1 140gms tin of tomato purée concentrate Juice of 1 lemon Salt & pepper 50gms of sultanas 20gms of pine nuts Handful of finely chopped parsley 125gms of goats cheese, crumbled How to make it Firstly, cook the rice in slightly salted water, drain and set aside. Now, chop the ‘flower’ end off the courgettes and reserve. Then using an apple corer, remove the pulpy centre being careful not to break the sides nor pierce the far end of the courgette. You may have to force the handle of the apple corer inside the courgette to reach right in. Take as much of the pulp out as possible and discard. Heat the oven to 190C (170C fan) / Gas Mark 5. In a large frying pan or skillet, heat a little olive oil and fry the minced lamb until lightly browned. Add the onion and garlic and continue fry until the onion has softened. Finely chop the sun-dried tomatoes and add to the pan with the oregano, rosemary and cinnamon. Stir in the tomato purée and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from the heat. Mix in thoroughly the sultanas, pine nuts, parsley and goats cheese. Fill each courgette with the mixture with a teaspoon and using a wooden spoon handle to push it in. Replace the end of the courgette and hold in place with a cocktail stick. Bake in the oven from 30 minutes covered with foil and then a further 15 minutes uncovered.

Phoning Home

Why is it that we pay lots of money to go on holiday to far off destinations to have a break from our daily routine and then spend lots of money to keep in touch with home? As soon as you get off the plane you see people on their mobile phones ringing home or sending e-mails. It’s now so easy to phone or e-mail from anywhere in the world that for many people it’s the first thing they do when they arrive at their holiday destination. For many people though, when they receive their bill it can be quite a shock unless they plan carefully before they leave home and check the “roaming” costs for using their phone in the country they are visiting. It can be very expensive especially if you use the internet on your phone. The EU have stepped in and asked networks to cut their charges and to cap data charges when roaming and you should get a warning from you network when you are getting near to the limit, but your bill can still mount up. Before you go, check with your network to find out what the charges will be for the countries you are visiting and ask them what special deals they have. Your network may have an arrangement with a particular company in the country you are visiting so make sure that you use that network. Remember that some phones automatically access the internet to check for such things as e-mails or the time clock. If you need to access the internet then try to use an internet café rather than use your phone, but if you must use your phone then find out if the hotel has free Wi-Fi. You can also use this to call home via Skype. If you have had any particularly bad, or even good, experiences with regard to phoning home when on holiday, please let me know by e-mailing

Surinder Bellamy talks about

Controlling Back Pain Back pain is one of the most common reasons for people visiting the doctor and for taking days off work, and, like toothache, it simply can’t be ignored. At the very worst it can stop a person in their tracks and even have them laid up in bed for days. At best it can be a constant ache and interruption to daily life and activities. The philosophy ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,’ couldn’t be more true for low back pain, but unfortunately strong, supple spines in young, active bodies, don’t realise that as lifestyles change with age, actively preventing back pain and implementing a programme of back care is critically important for a lifetime of good health. Unlike dental health care where there is a general awareness of looking after teeth and gums, prevention of back care and how to do this is not something that people are generally aware of as a community. Some of the causes of back pain can be attributed to specific spinal conditions, injuries or traumas, but it is estimated that in ninetyseven per cent of low back pain the cause is unknown. However, there are several conditions which are known to contribute to back pain – obesity being one. The skeleton is designed to carry a certain weight, but many people with back pain as well as other conditions are placing permanent loads of several stone upon their bones and joints. Eventually, the body will feel this strain more and more. The other factors in back pain developing are the loss of strength in the muscles (at the front and back of the trunk) supporting this core region of the body and the loss of suppleness that accompanies it. As the muscles weaken through lack of use, so the joints and segments stiffen. The real key to a healthy spine is regular exercise. Research has demonstrated that people who exercise regularly are less likely to suffer from back injuries and pain and also shows that they will recover more quickly than those who are less physically fit. Unfortunately, inactive people equate exercise with some form of torture and opt to do nothing. However, maintaining a healthy spine takes very little time and can involve a few simple floor exercises in addition to working on correct posture and good

In addition to making the mid-section strong, the muscles and joints must be flexible because tightness and stiffness prevent normal movement. Being supple prevents abnormal forces on the joints, but it’s important to have a balance and be flexible in all directions including the hamstring area as the ability to touch one’s toes is relevant to spinal flexibility and back pain. Aerobic activity is also important because it uses large muscle groups and helps promote heart and lung function and overall conditioning. Being aerobically active requires the core muscles to be engaged and there are lots of choices, from walking, swimming and cycling, to aerobic classes, ‘legs, bums and tums’ and yoga. Being controlled by back pain can be reversed, when no specific cause has been found. It does take some time and dedication, and results are not achieved overnight, but steadily. Controlling back pain is a lifelong exercise, but unlike back pain itself, the process is not painful! Surinder Bellamy is a personal trainer and life and performance coach based near Wellow and also covering Salisbury, Romsey and Totton areas. Exercises that can be done for back pain involve the elements of strengthening, stretching and aerobic activities. Strength exercises involve working the group of muscles that are a corset around the trunk, which run the length of the spine from the neck to the gluteal/thigh area and the length of the abdominal region including the hip area. This doesn’t necessarily mean doing big exercises like full sit-ups, but instead would involve a series of exercises with smaller movements, such as pelvic lifts or static exercises like ‘the plank.’

body mechanics while going about daily life. Awareness of the spinal and abdominal muscles while standing and sitting and the importance of keeping the spine in a neutral position also while sleeping as well as breathing correctly can make a huge difference to controlling back strength and thus back pain.
