Proud Camden is preparing itself for a Mancunian invasion on Thursday 31st May when it hosts a unique tribute night to The Smiths to coincide with the opening of photography exhibition, Manchester: So Much To Answer For. A retrospective of The Smiths by renowned photographer Kevin Cummins, this exhibition opens to the public at Proud Camden from 1st June – 15th July 2012. All Night Long, voted Independent Promoters of the Year 2011, have lined up The Smiths’ drummer Mike Joyce to headline the launch event – Panic: A Homage to The Smiths – making it one of the hottest gigs of the year for all fans of Morrissey and the iconic band. Adding a twist to proceedings will be rising stars Hoodlums and Hatcham Social, who are both busily rehearsing cover versions of The Smiths’ hits to pay respect to a band, which has consistently been cited as one of the most influential acts to emerge from Britain in the 1980s. Marking the 30th anniversary of The Smith’s formation, Cummins’ exhibition will be at Proud Camden until July 15th and includes his catalogue of the band’s publicity stills, countless magazine shoots and candid behind the scenes shots of Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce as they took their distinctive post punk music around the world. Cummins’ work also depicts the Manchester of the 80s, and the exhibition boasts a collection of stark, melancholy cityscapes which capture the cultural, social and political climate that gave birth to Indie music. Manchester: So Much To Answer For, documents The Smiths, the city and the aftermath. Tickets for the launch gig, Panic: A Homage to The Smiths, are available now from Proud Camden https://proudcamden.viewtickets.co.uk/payment/order?id=36579 The photography exhibition, Manchester: So Much To Answer For is free to the public.
