2019 “The Black House”

“the black house” Mathew Gavac Gabriella Cordova 2019/03/06 Term project 1

SECTION 1.0 - INTRODUCTION

“The black house was designed by architect: Benjamin Heller, and built in 2017 at Ohningen, Germany. The total area of the lot including the landscaping is 325 square meters” (Vial, 2019). It is near a small village on a lake, which is near the border of Switzerland. It will differ amongst the small village because of its unique style of architecture. The exterior of the building has a unique variety of angles, polygonal shapes, with a matte dark grey finish.” There is an outstanding color change being created on the outer surface due to the dark façade beaming in the sunlight” (Vial, 2019). The focus of the house is to please the viewer of the scenic view of the landscape and water.

SECTION 2.0 – ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES AND STYLE

The “Black House is majorly focused on the landscaping, and the scenery of the water. The rooms and the open living areas are expanded in southern direction. The main focus on the interior is to recognize and view the astonishing landscape. “The dark oak flooring has a contrasting and appealing interaction to the scenic views of the lake” (Vial, 2019). “This residential building has two levels, and includes: public, semipublic, and private spaces throughout the house” (Vial, 2019). The rooms have a large amount of dark and light wood, making parts of the house having the “German village” look. “Room heights change throughout the house, making the experience through the house pleasing and visually interesting” (S, 2019).

SECTION 3.0 – CIRCULATION

“First, when you enter the main door, you encounter public or common spaces intended for socializing, it consists of having a living/dining room, washrooms, Kitchen, and many sitting areas” (Vial,2019). The main attraction is on the southside if you continue downwards the building which is the landscaping and water view. “Then you are moving onto semi-public spaces that might be used more by family rather than visitors, which is located on the west side of building, and moving onto the second floor the building” (S, 2019). “And then finally onto private spaces like bedrooms and bathroom suites on the second floor. This gives the sense of privacy but also provides family members with calm, safe spaces to get to” (S, 2019).

SECTION 4.0 – CONSTRUCTIONS SYSTEMS AND MATERIALS

The house is made from solid wood, which reflects the love for nature, and fits well with the organic environment. “The dark wood façade is constant throughout the structure which makes it gleam and stand out in the sun, especially with the geometrical shapes it consists of” (Vial, 2019). “It has parquet flooring of dark oak result in a harmonic but also a high contrasting interaction for the lakeview” (S, 2019).

SECTION 5.0 – CONCLUSION/RECCOMENDATIONS

Although some of the geometric shapes might seem out of position, the orientation of the Black House was made very precise on how the sun will reflect on it. The rooms are made for comfort, viewing, and suitable for all people if they want guests, or privacy. “It faces directions from particular rooms with windows to ensure that a beautiful view of the landscape and the lake view is available at all times” (S, 2019).
