The project presented here as part of the master of landscape architecture at the Oslo school of Architecture and Design, is the witness of a personal approach based on the specific characteristics, physical or sensitives of a defined site.

The proposed study area is located in Oslo between Bjerke and Ă˜kern. The project is set in a variety issues at different scales that surround the context of the application of the city council for the Oslo Olympics games 2022. The task here is not to define a program and specific design for the games but think about the future of this territory whilst taking advantage of the Olympics.

An initial phase of mapping allowed us to better understand the multiple interfaces between the different elements of the territory, including the importance of the relationship between the topography of the site, in the shape of a valley which spands from the mountains of Oslo Marka towards Okern and guides views towards the fjord.

“The scope is the first horizon to be seen: it is the main component generating the project, and an understanding of its characteristics : the first act of the project.“ Henri Bava, Territories, reveal the city landscape, Birkhauser 2008

After meeting the physical scope, an analytical work is undertaken : The aim of this work is to reveal the different layers that make up the scope and understand their structure. The mapping aims to reveal specific characteristics of the study area.

The analysis was a means to grasp the potential of the site. Of particular interest is the structure of scattered empty spaces, voids, and poorly used spaces today and are not part of future development. Although efforts are being made locally (example Bjerkedalen park).

The crossing of vacant areas, centralities & interest point with the network of public transportation helps refine our initial analysis of such spaces and apprehend the first issues.

The identity of a territory in people minds

p17

- p19

The urban fabric is mainly a result from the post-war period and has not changed a lot over the last thirty years. It corresponds mainly to private houses with some areas of more diversity around the centralities. Thus, 70% of homes are three bedroom or more and residents are mostly families of 4. If Bjerke has not changed a lot over the last thirty years it is because people want to keep the identity of the site:

To have the feeling of living in their own private space in a favorised context near the forest. One of the issues of the project is to be inspired by the identity of Bjerke whilst bringing new mixed uses within the neighbourhood maintaining the idea of surrounding nature. Obviously the idea of planting a forest on the site to keep this feeling is absurd, but to try to translate that feeling of living on the edge of the forest would coincide with the wishes of the future inhabitants and would work well with the structure of empty-green spaces already here.

Concept and process

ÂŤEmpty space is unique in that it offers extraordinary experiences in the context of ordinary. It mobilizes all our sens-

es and provides room for sound, weather, seasons, nature to take place within.Âť

p21

- p27

Reconnect

Identify existing open spaces and their uses. Then identify potential dis-connections to repair or create new connections to create a structure which is able to link and connect different neighbourhoods, but also various points of interest: biathlon / skating / soccer stadiums / schools / gardens / bus stop … Relying in particular on the creation of new ‘soft’ways, and valuing these spaces by highlighting it.

Densify

Share Gauthier Durey Concept - fall 2013 and process

23

The project starts with the creation of the missing connections between Bjerke and Oslo Marka Thus, these connections allow to articulate the different neighbourhoods and allow the project itself to develop.

Examples of missing connexions

Gauthier Durey Concept - fall 2013 and process

25

Empty spaces in the city, whether abandoned or voluntarily not filled are spaces of all possibilities, to fill it entirely, despite some advantages such as densification, will make these spaces frozen and immobile to future projects. In addition the project site finds itself deployed to a larger scale which gives it a better consistency.

Feel the landscape through sequences

p29

- p33

The project’s approach focuses on findig design rules in the landscape for the development of the project. The aim is to identify the characteristics already present in the territory and develop the project to use these components such as topography, hydrography, industrial past... And give more depth to these specific characteristics.

The project is developed from the forest to Okern with the idea to give the feeling of living on the edge of the forest. However, the characteristics of the site evolving and changing from the north to the south led the project to develop this concept in different ways, and in different sequences.

More detailed project areas correspond to different sequences discussed above, and highlight several specific cases with each time a strong idea and an iconic intervention.

Focused areas & iconic interventions

«Infrastructures are flexible and anticipatory. They work with time and are open to change. By specifying what must be fixed and what is subject to change, they can be precise and indeterminate at the same time.» Stan Allen : Infrastructural urbanism book : Points + Lines : Diagrams and Projects for the City1999

p34

- p82

Ice skating

The issue of the site is to reconnect the different pathways giving more importance to soft ways of transportation compared to the car. It is also to improve the green structure and integrate collectives but private lands. The project also aims to renovate the area around the outdoor ice-skating rink : one of the iconic installations.

Cross the barrier

Bjerke is a secondary but sufficiently complex urban node to ignore the human scale. Thus Bjerke is both a point of interest and a barrier. The project aims to benefit from the potential organization of 2022 Olympics Games in Oslo to propose a pedestrian structure for connecting each side of Bjerke, but also the services already on the site: Shopping mall, library ‌ In the same vein an area of possible densification has been defined to allow the construction of new housing and service that will accentuate local uses.

The project continues with an abrupt change in the topography, and uses this change to create a transition through a darker, more intimate place where water re-emerges occasionally focusing on auditory feelings rather than visual. The transition enables a path from a very open link with the sky, to a wet area in connection with the ground.

This industrial area is now used to supply fruit and vegetables to the city. Historically the products were sold here directly to people. The project proposes to rehabilitate an existing building and convert it. And this public facility would accommodate many uses: market place, restaurants, events, concerts,or any celebrations that might occur during the Olympic games.

This last area is established in contact with Okern and creates an urban facade on the spine of the project. The green structure is raised above the parking and reduces the impact of the buildings on it. While a walkway emerges from Okerne to the centre of the project by linking each of the different areas.
