PENINSULA HOUSE : EXTENSION

* layers * circulation * merging *

The house located in Vitoria, Australia is designed by Sean Godsill. This house was built keeping in mind the weather, hence the use of multi layer system. It blends with the surrounding due to the material used, from a very coarse unfinished material to subtle use of glass. Hence selection of materials is not only for visual aesthetics but also for its functionality forming a protective mesh around the house. He used the human body as a metaphor for designing this house. The structural system of the house and the skin over it acts as exoskeleton whereas the circulation and space with different functions characterizes the endoskeleton. The three primary spaces living room, bedroom and the library are very different in its nature due to the volumes and the quality of light filtering in each of these rooms.

PENINSULA HOUSE : EXTENSION

* terrain * texture & material * nature *

The existing structure uses a porous membrane of wooden slats to help define the relationship of site/context to user/client. It allows several different readings: 1) connection to nature via materials/views/light 2) adaptability & flexibility using the open able system of wooden panels which can alter the relationship between interior/exterior. The Insertion: Guesthouse: The terrain & nature play an extremely important role in my extension to the Peninsula House. The intention was to make it look as if no extension has been added as you approach the house, using the terrain & levels to conceal the addition. Texture & materials play a large role in this (i.e: grass on roofs/concrete textures/etc) This happens on both sides of the extension although glimpses of architecture become more obvious as you move around the site. You can access the outside spaces using existing circulation paths while the rooms create a clear connection to the outside. Form is of secondary impact but developed using fluid elements and simple natural strokes.
