WELCOME TO THE 2018-2019 SEASON! I am so excited for this upcoming season at Gateway Theatre. We’re welcoming back some incredibly talented artists whose work you’ve loved in the past. Diane Brown, the director of the sold-out hit I Lost My Husband, is back to direct the celebrated Canadian play Les Belles-soeurs. Featuring a cast of 15 dynamic women, this Metro Vancouver premiere is sure to be a delight. And Meghan Gardiner, the star of I Lost My Husband and The Music Man, shows she’s equally talented as a writer with the world premiere of her play Gross Misconduct. Finally, Peter Jorgensen, who directed last year’s gem A Little Night Music, returns to direct his own musical adaptation of the iconic It’s a Wonderful Life. Along with these favourites, you’ll be introduced to some other extraordinary artists. Tetsuro Shigematsu, familiar to many as a CBC broadcaster, is bringing his acclaimed one-man show Empire of the Son to Gateway. This funny and touching piece has toured from Vancouver to St. John’s —you won’t want to miss it! Tracey Power, the gifted writer/ choreographer of the hit Chelsea Hotel, has a new play called GLORY, a celebration of pioneering women hockey players told through swing dance. Finally, I’m thrilled to be directing the Canadian premiere of Yoga Play, a hilarious satire by the brilliant playwright Dipika Guha. Born in India and raised in the UK, Dipika currently resides in the U.S. where she is acknowledged as a leading emerging writer. With Yoga Play, she’s created a hilarious piece that feels 100% Lower Mainland. This is a fantastic line-up that takes you from the West Coast of Canada to Quebec, through Ontario, and right to the village of Bedford Falls. Join us for the ride! JOVANNI SY Artistic Director

CANADIAN COMEDY

LES BELLES-SOEURS By Michel Tremblay Translated by John Van Burek & Bill Glassco

SEPTEMBER 27 ‒ OCTOBER 6, 2018 MAINSTAGE THE HILARIOUS MISFORTUNES OF ONE WOMAN’S FORTUNE It’s 1960’s Montreal, and working-class housewife Germaine Lauzon has won one million customer loyalty stamps. She needs to place the stamps in booklets in order to redeem them, but who can she trust when her jealous family and neighbours come over for a stamp-sticking party? The women complain aggressively, overshare shamelessly, and fantasize freely while secretly coveting Germaine’s precious stamps. Raucous, reckless, and hysterically funny, this windfall of humour, dreams, and heart is sure to pay off!

Directed by Diane Brown Produced by Ruby Slippers Theatre

“…Tremblay’s most popular and widely translated play.

Almost 50 years later, the text still feels incendiary and its subject matter ground-breaking”

—The Georgia Straight

ACCLAIMED DRAMA

EMPIRE OF THE SON By Tetsuro Shigematsu NOVEMBER 8 ‒ 17, 2018 STUDIO B SEPARATED BY A GENERATION, CONNECTED BY BLOOD In this funny and poignant autobiographical one-man show, Tetsuro Shigematsu (former host of CBC Radio’s The Roundup) tells the inspiring tale of his emotionally distant father, Akira, whose legacy is felt beyond his lifetime. From the ashes of Hiroshima to swinging 1960’s London, Empire of the Son shows how Akira’s incredible personal history has influenced two generations. Though separated by language, culture and history, what truly keeps this father and son apart is their similarities.

Directed by Richard Wolfe Produced by Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre

“A powerful display of emotion… a riveting theatrical experience.”
