A new 6-part message series with Pastor Martin Trench September/October/November 2013

ALL OF US REFLECT THE GLORY OF THE LORD, WHO CONTINUES TO CHANGE US BY HIS SPIRIT, INTO HIS GLORIOUS MIRROR IMAGE. 2 CORINTHIANS 3:18

J

esus repeatedly taught that, instead of judging other people, complaining about the mess of the world, or withdrawing from society, we should rather be looking to God for our example, and looking within to change ourselves, and then work as transformed people to make the world a better place.

2 / / g a t e way m a g a z i n e f a l l 2 0 1 3

The man who looks into the perfect mirror of God’s law of liberty, and makes a habit of so doing, and puts into practice what he sees there; he wins true happiness. James 1:25

Discover who you really are... a gifted, amazing child of God, created in “his image and likeness”, born to reflect the very image of God.

Discover who God is... a loving, forgiving, creative intelligence, perfectly revealed in Jesus “the visible image of the invisible God”.

Discover what the scriptures really are... “a perfect mirror” that lets us see ourselves – our problems and our possibilities – in the stories and characters, and seeing ourselves, we gain wisdom, and so grow and change.

What’s with the symbols? To make it easier for you to quickly know what section of the magazine you are in, we’ve implemented an icon and colour code to each. You’ll find them situated at the top of the page and each colour icon and line corresponds to three distinct categories:

Connect - on Sundays with God with people with church Grow - in a group community nights community groups house parties Serve - on a team Sunday service teams social justice teams mid-week ministry teams

I’m starting with the man in the mirror, I’m asking him to change his ways and no message could have been any clearer: If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and then make a change. Michael Jackson

FAI COMMI

Father God, I come to you today to seek your forgiveness, blessing, and power. I acknowledge that I have sinned and fallen short of the life you created me for. I ask for your forgiveness. I believe that your Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross in my place and for my sins, so that I may receive new life and a new relationship with you; and I believe that he rose from the dead and is alive for evermore. I open up my life fully to the presence of your Spirit, to change me, lead me, and empower me to take the next step in my journey of faith. By your grace, may I become the person you always intended me to be — a fully-forgiven, fully-alive child of the living God. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Theology, Leadership & Spiritual Growth

A Non-Violent Atonement with Michael Hardin Wednesday October 2nd at 7pm A special class - open to everyone - with guest teacher & theologian Michael Hardin. Michael emphasizes peace studies, non-violence, an holistic view of God, scripture, and life. In this Academy class, he will take us through the reasons that we misinterpret the Bible to reveal a god of wrath and a cross where Jesus took our punishment, and how we can see the scriptures with new eyes, to reveal a God of unconditional love, who does not require ‘payment’ for sins, but who freely and fully forgives. Cost - $20. Notes & refreshments included. Book online or at the Gateway Info Desk.

The Kingdom, The Power, and the Glory with Martin Trench Oct 30th, Nov 13th & 27th The Kingdom: a look at God’s new world that is emerging in our midst, and how we can re-capture some of the surprising ways the early church expressed community. The Power: we will learn about the person, character, power, gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit - not only in theory, but in practice as we experiment with various spiritual gifts. The Glory: what does the future hold in store for the individual, the church, and the whole of creation? We will look at God’s ultimate intention to make everything ‘glorious’. Cost - $30. Notes, refreshments, and all three sessions included. Book online or at the Gateway Info Desk. 1 2 / / g a t e way m a g a z i n e f a l l 2 0 1 3

Do you have a passion for children and/or youth and want to be a part of a team that empowers students to become lifelong followers of Christ? If this sounds like you, then maybe you need to explore and use your gifts, in one form or another, for God’s Kingdom and make an eternal impact in a student’s life by joining the student ministry team.

Here at Gateway we have an exciting, creative, growing design and tech team who strive to make the name of Jesus famous through graphic design & new media, video, sound, lighting and presentation. For our Sunday services, we’re looking for sound engineers, lighting engineers/designers as well as presentation team members. We also always need fresh talent for our church news shoots, if you’re comfortable in front of a camera (or behind), give us a shout! Do you have a passion to see people go deeper in their relationship with God and see people come to faith in Christ? Then come and be a part of the Community Life Team! Be it working in the background or in the trenches —God made you for something, so come explore what that might be! Coming to church for the first time can be a nerve wracking experience. That’s why we have a fantastic hospitality team here at Gateway. Our cafe, info desk, ushering and greeting teams make sure everyone feels at home in our house. If you are sociable and enjoy helping others feel welcome, we’d love to have you!

We have an amazing venue and property at Gateway and it takes a lot of “behind the scenes” people to keep it looking great and functioning well. Volunteers to do general upkeep around the building and property are vital. We also have teams of people who help with special events, rentals and auditorium seating. Many of these opportunities to serve don’t require a weekly commitment, but having a list of people we can call on is essential. Consider adding your name to the list today.

worship & creative arts

At Gateway we believe the arts are a powerful way to experience God’s presence and share the message of God’s love to people. We are always looking for more musicians, singers, performers, and artists of every kind to use their talents in the church.

This Masterclass, based on Harold’s two-volume book of the same title, will open your eyes to ideas and concepts, based on scripture and proven by life-experience, which you may never have thought about before. This is not about a shallow ‘prosperity gospel’, nor is it a financial plan to follow, rather, it’s about mind & life-transformation.

“Let God change you into a new person, by changing the way you think!” (Romans 12:2)

There are fundamental changes that you can make in the way you think which will help you release God's blessings into your own life. This is a balanced look at the promises of God with practical steps you can take to move into financial freedom. Christians are not supposed to be poor. It is time to gain victory in the financial arena. After learning how to overcome a poverty mind-set, don't just earn a living. Instead, advance. Create wealth. You can break poverty's hold and receive the abundance God wants for your life.

Cost - $50 per person, $200 for a table of 5. Lunch included Book online at our website, or at our Info Desk on a Sunday
