What was your first bike? Yamaha PW 50. What was your first race and how did you do? My first race was at a local track in Eastern North Carolina and I actually won my first ever race! What is your pre-race mood adjustment; music in the headphones or silence? A bit of both… I listen to music before and closer to the race just silence and focus.
some great guys I train with. We work hard and have a lot of fun so it works out really well. One thing in the United States that you’ve always wanted to go check out? I’ve been to a lot of awesome places in in the U.S., but I would love to go check out Aspen, Colorado in the winter time. Have you ever ridden the dunes with a paddle tire? I have not, but I would love to!
What is your pre-race food? What is your cheat meal? Chicken, rice, broccoli, and avocado. And for a cheat meal I like In-N-Out.
First broken bone, how and when did it happen? I broke my collarbone when I was eight years old in Las Vegas at the World Mini’s. There was a bike on the landing of a big double and I landed on the bike because no one had the yellow flag out!
Training program, love it or hate it? I have started to really enjoy training. I train with Gareth Swanepoel and have

Mainly I surf, wakeboard, jetski, golf, mountain bike, cycle, run, and swim. You’ve been given an elephant. You can’t sell or give it away. What do you do with the elephant? Put it on my property in North Carolina and let him do his thing! If you could roost one person on the track who would it be? My training partner Colt Nichols because he hates getting his kit dirty! bike during opening ceromonies and it took a while to get it started.
Who’s your motocross role model? Growing up I really liked RC on and off the track, but now I am amazed how good James Stewart was.
When was the last time you were really angry? I get mad at myself quite a bit. The last time I can remember was either crashing at Seattle SX this year - throwing away a 2nd place - or at Southwick I hit a lapper and stalled the bike and threw away a 3rd place in the moto and a 3rd overall.
Favorite Track? My favorite race track is Red Bud. My favorite practice track is Club MX. What’s your ideal non-race Saturday? A nice day on Lake Norman, NC on my boat with my girlfriend and friends just hanging out, wake surfing, and blasting good music. What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done? Man I’m sure I’ve done a lot, but nothing stands out in my head. One thing I can think of this year was when I stalled the

What was your first bike? Honda QR 50. What was your first race and how did you do? It was a local race in Buzy, France. My bike was the slowest of everyone, and I barely made it up the hills… I got last and cried! What is your pre-race mood adjustment; music in the headphones or silence? Pre-race I like to be in a quiet space, get ready and relax. What is your favorite TV show? I watch a lot of french TV programs, documentaries. I love to learn about different places. What is your pre-race food? What is your cheat meal? Pre-race food is always some rice and chicken, plain and boring. Haha! We

are not allowed to have any cheat meal with Aldon…but I think I would get a Raclette cheese. Training program, love it or hate it? Even when it’s tough, it feels good to be training and in shape. I love riding my mountain bike and I keep hearing about Moab, Utah. I will go check it out one day! Have you ever ridden the dunes with a paddle tire? I went to Glamis once for a 100% photoshoot. It was my first and only time I went and I had a blast! I hope to go again soon.
First broken bone, how and when did it happen? I broke my collarbone in 2000, I was 10. I was practicing on my private SX track after school. What’s more stressful, the gate drop, or the first turn? Gate drop because if you get it right, first turn will be easier. If you mess up the gate drop, then you know you have to make magic happen in the first turn! Besides Moto, do you have any hobbies or collections? I love to collect trophies! (Laughter) When I have time I love to ride my stand up jetski! You’ve been given an elephant. You can’t sell or give it away. What do you do with the elephant? We love animals, we would be pumped! We might need to buy a house with more

A TALK WITH TORSTEN
A TA L K W I T H TOR ST E N
TO SAY THAT TORSTEN HALLMAN IS A LEGEND IS A BIT OF AN UNDERSTATEMENT. AFTERALL, WHAT THE MAN HAS DONE FOR OUR BELOVED SPORT IS IMMEASUREABLE. WE OWE A DEBT OF GRATITUDE TO MEN LIKE HIM THAT PUSHED OUR SPORT AND HELPED SHAPE WHAT IT IS TODAY. BEYOND THAT, THE CLASS, SHOWMANSHIP AND HUMILTY OF TORSTEN IS SECOND TO NONE. WE ARE TRULY HONORED TO HAVE HIM AS THE NAMESAKE OF OUR BRAND.
When you first began selling Hallman racing products nearly 50 years ago, did you ever think Motocross would be the sport that it is today? I had a feeling that the motocross sport was fitting the American people when I came the first year. Americans like speed, action, and you know from way back, the first settlers, they need to take some risks. This is why Edison Dye and I started this company to get more riders to come to the United States.
WE CAUGHT UP WITH TORSTEN TO GET SOME INSIGHT ON WHAT MOVED HIM TO START HALLMAN AND HIS THOUGHTS ON WHERE THE SPORT AND BRAND IS TODAY.
What is one of your favorite racing memories from the early days? When I started to race, everything was gray and dark so to speak. I remember the first time I put yellow stripes on black pants and this was sensational at that time. The next thing was colors and things. It
was adding something new to the sport. When I won the first world championship, Husqvarna was in the process to stop making motorcycles so they said we are going to make one more try with a new engine, a new gearbox, so do you want to be the rider for us, for the 1962 season. I said yes, of course I will do this. In the beginning of the season, we had several problems with the new engine. Jeff Smith and the BSA teams were winning just about every race in the beginning. They needed only one more win to clinch the title. But at the time my Husky was good, all of the problems were gone and I won the rest of them. The final race was in Sweden and it was my best memory of my racing career. If you think about it, if the gearbox had been a problem and continued for the rest of the season and I would have finished third or fourth Husqvarna would have stopped S P_18

making motorcycles and would have never sent me to the United States to introduce the motocross sport. It was a knife edge so to speak, to come over. It was a good memory, definitely the best memory for me at least - the1962 Championship. THOR continues to develop new performance products that carry on your legacy - Did you ever think the company you started would give birth to an entire industry of motocross clothing brands? I could have never imagined Supercross would be like how it is today.
It’s tremendous when 50-60,000 people are in the stands. I could have never expected that. When I was racing I took care of my bike and was my own manager. Today, the riders have training and people looking after them. That is the biggest change I think. I could have never expected to sell product with one name after 50 years, that’s a fantastic thing. I could never expect anything like this. I am grateful to be around and still be alive to see all of the nice, new product THOR is making. It makes me proud, it makes me real proud. 45
