Keep Recycling

CLEAN Contamination is anything put in your blue recycling cart that does not belong there.

Contamination can have serious negative consequences for your recycling program: • Your cart may not be emptied – If the driver who collects your cart notices a large amount of contamination, s/he may not be able to empty your cart. If this happens, a notice will be left on your cart letting you know why the cart was not collected. • Degrading material values Contamination decreases the quality of recyclables, which decreases their value and may even result in making bailed materials unmarketable. • Reducing recycling rates – Contamination can cause materials that would otherwise be recycled to be landfilled. For instance, bottles and cans can get lodged in film wrap or plastic bags and will end up landfilled instead of sorted.

In addition to becoming new cans, recycled aluminum is also used to make airplane parts, building facades and bicycles. Aluminum can be melted down and made into new products over and over again. Nearly 75 percent of all the aluminum produced since 1888 is still in use today and the process uses 95 percent less energy than using virgin ore. It takes just 60 days to melt a can down, turn it into a new one, fill it with a beverage and place it back on store shelves. 10

MAKE every day EARTH DAY Reuse is even better than recycling.

While recycling paper, plastic and metal is a great way to reduce waste and help the environment, reusing materials is even better. With recycling you have to break the item down into raw materials to make something new, but reusing eliminates the labor and energy needed for manufacturing.

During the City’s Earth Day celebration, K-6 students will participate in a recycled art competition. Middle and high school students in an eco-apparel competition and adults in an upcycling competition

Proper Disposal OF

PROPANE TANKS

Propane tanks are flammable. Please help protect the safety of the people collecting trash and recycling by properly disposing of tanks. When further use isn't possible, there are safe means to dispose of empty tanks: • Call the retailer where you purchased your propane tank and ask about "take back" or other recycling options. • The Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center accepts propane tanks and pressurized cylinders from Garland residents for free.

Have you ever wondered what happens to your trash and recycling after it leaves the curb?

Tours Available Tours are available of Garland’s Recycling Center, Transfer Station and the Hinton Landfill for community groups. Why? Seeing is believing. Viewing items that should be placed in the blue recycling cart changes habits. No one sorts the trash from the recycling at a landfill site—all the material gets buried. To schedule a tour, email EWS@GarlandTX.gov or call 972-205-3500.

AMERICA RECYCLES DAY

Celebrate America Recycles Day on Nov. 2 and every day by donating and recycling items not collected by Garland Environmental Waste Services, such as clothing and TVs.

Here's why! 50-80 percent of unwanted textiles in the U.S. are sent to the landfill, roughly 5 percent of landfill space. Almost 100 percent of household textiles and clothing can be recycled! Televisions and computer screens that used glass cathode ray tubes, also called CRTs, contain several pounds of toxic lead.
